  • Poole Twin Sails Lift Bridge, Poole, Dorset.
    Location: Twin Sails Bridge, Poole
    Date Filmed: 06-04-2017
    The bridge itself is very unique. It doesn't look like a typical drawbridge at all. The road is cut at an angle so instead, two triangles of road lift instead of two rectangles of road, thus making it look like two sails.
    Thanks For Watching!

A wait at a moving bridge is longer than a level crossing so locals don't want to wait. This is also the only road going over the Poole Harbour as the other bridge is in repairs until this summer.

    • @YukiGersaniba
      @YukiGersaniba ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re on about level crossings: some of ours have half-barriers (blocking only one side of the road) because they’re automatic level crossings. As there is basically no one watching the crossing, the other side isn’t blocked to allow oncoming traffic to escape the crossing.
      If you’re on about swing bridges: yeah, all entry/exit roads will have barriers.

    That to me, as someone with smidgen of engineering knowledge seems like an unnecessarily complicated bridge. Whatever happened to good old swing and lift bridges, I mean yes they might not look as cool, but they tend to work a lot better and are easier to maintain.

      Yeah it is quite cool to watch. I don't think its under any maintenance closures at the moment. It has had quite a few maintenance jobs over the last few years but I don't think its had any recently.

    1:47 I've never seen a bridge raise like that before!
    4:32 so he alarms go back on when the barriers raise too!
    Are level crossing style barriers and lights common on British drawbridges?

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This bridge is very modern and a great piece of architecture. It's not like the usual drawbridge you come across.
      The alarms come back on as a safety precaution that the barriers are about to raise. This isn't really implemented on level crossings as level crossings aren't as busy.
      Drawbridges/Swing bridges and level crossings both use wigwags (the red/white bordered flashing lights) to stop traffic and pedestrians. Most barriers are the same on level crossings but moving bridges use barriers made by a different company (as different companies offer cheaper barrier systems).

    Why does the alarm turn on again when the barriers raise

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I guess to warn pedestrians and vehicles the barriers are about to raise. I've only seen this used with bridges. Because its a reasonable wait whilst the bridge raises and lowers, there's an extra warning provided.

  • @paulbowler2760
    @paulbowler2760 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is NOT a Lift Bridge! That is a double bascule bridge - very clever and striking design! In principle, it is no different from Tower Bridge, London. For a "lift Bridge" see the Kingsferry Bridge on the A249, south of Sheerness, Kent!

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really as it's caused quite a lot of maintenance problems since it was opened. It was design with architecture in mind to make it look like two sails, so more to do with aesthetics than actual function.

    It was once shut in the upright position for about a month or two to the point where the foundations had started sinking into the sand because of the weight of the bridge on itself. The Poole bridge also, (the green one) is sometimes shut but that one is mostly barrier issues

    Be interesting to know why it was decided to make two moving parts instead of just one. Now you need two full operating mechanisms and two shafts to hold the counterweight. Must have been expensive. But, fascinating to watch though.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was constructed with architecture in mind back in 2010. The bridge is designed, with the two triangular road spans, to depict two sails when fully raised, hence the name. It cost quite a bit but it does look very impressive 👍
