Excellent video. Spent an hour trying to remove couple rounded bolts from a 4runner skid plate to get to the oil filter. Watched your video, went to Harbor Freight and picked up a bolt extractor set..... job done in a couple minutes. Thank you!
Awesome, thanks a lot for the tips. I actually am in the middle of dealing with trying to remove a rusty bolt with a rounded off head so this was perfect timing.

Hi Jesse at GearHeads: Thanks so much for the very useful and informative instructional video on using a twist socket set. Last night I went to replace the mower blades on a pre-owned John Deere L100 lawn tractor. Two blades utilizing four bolts. With a little effort the first blade came off, but the two bolts holding the second blade will not budge, even when I sprayed in white-lithium grease. Then one of the bolts started rounding off. So tomorrow, Saturday, I'm headed to a local tool store to buy me a twist socket set. Again, thanks for sharing your know-how and experience with us amateur mechanics. Jeff in rural Aylett, Virginia.
Alright so I went got the deep sockets of the nut extractor tool twist socket set here and it worked instantly and there very good to have very awesome to have and get they help alot good luck and good day
I’ve got to do that same thing today. It eased my mind to read your post. The last person who changed the oil on this car rounded the bolt and left it. I’m just going to do it for this customer, because I know a shop would charge her an arm and a leg to remove it.
I use the Irwin "Bolt Out" sets. They also have deep sockets for removing nuts from long studs (I'm sure Snap On does too). The Irwin sets are priced under $50 each and have never failed me. They're also much easier to find than Snap On.
@@isaacc3307 Well, not often, but in a tight spot, too much degree movement with a ratchet, only a t handle or breaker bar will work to get some motion, and a 6 point doesn't even allow enough rotation to accomodate putting it at the right angle. Like I say , very rare, but after 45 yrs of wrenching, yea ran into this plenty of times.
Very helpful, thank you for sharing.Dealership I bought used car from used threadlocker on oil plug.I asked them why, they said it might come off.I have never had a oil plug come loose on any vehicle I ever had in my life.

Sounds like sabbotage to the next owner lol, or revenge to an ex or something. Just get the thing snug and torque it if you're super worried but threadlocker? nah
The old Sears/Craftsman had these, for around $50 for the set. I got a set a few years ago and they are made in USA and are awesome tools when your in a pinch. I have only had one time that they didn't work because the bolt was just too soft.
Great video, I've been doing some maintenance stuff on my mower and tractor and have a bolt rounded off. Very little space to get into but I think it will do the trick.
Merci, had a little problem with nuts on my RAV4 today while attempting to change tires for the first time. Seems two or three nuts were stripped...This explains what needs to be done. I'll be able to talk with garage folk.
I got some tonight for about $40 from autozone 5 pack oem tools is what's printed on them I'm going to try them out very shortly and they have shallow and deep socket I bought the deep socket set of them thanks have a good day will respond when use them
I have a propane tank that is leaking around the capacity gauge. The 4 screws holding it in are seized or rusted. They are made to use only a flat screwdriver to turn them. I have used PB blaster on them and Kroil oil. Still not budging as it may not be finding its way up under the screw well enough. Found where I might can heat them one at a time with a soldering iron---can't use any other type of heat with it leaking right there. Haven't tried that yet. So in desperation I will try this technique....see if they get even the tiniest bite and can slowly start turning them out of there. Never heard of these and just happen to run across your video. What a great thing. Jesus bless. Any other suggestions from you or anyone else is welcome. Thanks.
Rounded off 4 bolts in a row today, I got them all off, but damn, gm cg joint bolts are like plastic, I was using the right socket too ugh, frustrating, but I use the OEM rounded off bolt set, worked amazing with my impact and some heat
Yep. The problem for us is how often bolts like to break no matter how long we work on them. I can usually get them, but sometimes there is no avoiding it.
So I used a set like this to get some stripped lugs off of my Wrangler...worked great, only problem is with the last two lugs. I used the provided punch tool to remove the nut from the socket, and it got lodged in the nut. I was able to get it off the socket, and removed the last stripped lug. Tried the other end of the punch tool to remove the nut from the socket, and THAT end got lodged. So now I have what looks like a stripped lug, with a punched lodged into it, followed by the 3/4" socket, and the other lug nut on that end. It's one big mess and I have no idea how to dislodge the nuts from the punch tool lol.
I have to remove the dipstick holder bolt which was external torx but now it just about looks like hex because I took some advice I found in the wrong way and killed it. It's about a 6mm because a 6mm socket start to try to bite, so of I can find a set in smaller sizes that should work for my application.
The Blue Point is probably rebranded Irwin. Rocket Sockets are what I would recommend, based price and quality, even over the Snap On.. Made in US and works better than the Irwin’s.
I just ordered a set that has a hex on the outside for a spanner, and these ones are a lot shorter, so they look more like a nut going on to a nut, for me these looked good for a tight space, where I don't have a lot of wiggle room from above, but I have room in the left and right direction to use a spanner. If I had to buy the longer type that fit a socket wrench, I would have to remove a lot of the other stuff that is in the way, making the job a lot longer.. as like removing the water pump off the motorcycle I'm working on, and then having to drain the coolant, and then the reverse of that with as well sealing up the water pump.. that's just too messy... I think the water pump being in the way was why it got rounded off in the first place.. by the other owner, or of who owned before it was sold to me, of my now second hand motorcycle.
ROCKET SOCKET brand twist socket set worked the best for youtube channel "Project Farm" to remove rounded off nuts & bolts with no damage to the tool itself being used, and the set only costs $69.95. Made in USA.
Yes, and Irwin and GearWrench makes a set specifically for that. Irwin’s are shallow and GearWrench are deep and both can be used with impacts. You can even buy just the size you need on Amazon. .

Last lug nut stuck. Wd 40 for hours. Broke down and bought a set of these. Hammered on just fine but the nut still won't budge with a giant pipe as a break on the ratchet handle. ☹ note: not rusted even. Just over tightened by tire store.
You need an impact gun señorita! Plus if its that bad it sounds more likely it was crossthreaded or damaged from so much use vs just being overtightened. I have had ones like that happen when I know I was the last one to tighten them, a piece of hardware only has so much use! Just get it apart and replace the stud and lug and you should be good 👍
5:36..... Just close the vise to slightly above the size of the head of the bolt then if you hit it a few times it doesn't mark the anodised black coating
Luckily I dont need to pull them out very often. Probably only once every month or two, but everytime I need one and it works I feel like it was worth the purchase all over again. It has saved so many hours.
The extractors are labeled for the size of stripped heads they should be able to grab onto yes. Sometimes I'll go a size down if one is really bad or damaged.
I have a damaged nut holding on my front brake caliper it was rounded too much for the right sized socket to fit and too much material for the next smallest one. Dremeled the nut down to size, hammered socket on and it just fell off, stripped of and couldn't bite deep enough to hold on.
