I listened to all kinds of training books, but you knock the sugar right off that stuff, also what you say makes so much sense it kinda makes me mad I didn't find your stuff sooner. But thank you sir
Great job describing "default". I wrote down how you described it in an earlier vid. What the dog learns first What he likes the most What he will do the best What he will revert to when under stress
The greatest part of this vid is at 2:45!! The longer you train and the more K9 teams you are responsible for especially in police service dogs you stay humble and will always learn problem solving techniques for handlers and K9s to improve performance on the street.
I was recently hit by a car, crossing the street in the crosswalk had the light with my dog. Busy intersection next to a highway here in NYC. I managed some how to throw the dog out of the way before being hit. Car hit me I broke his windshield was then thrown breaking wrist and road rash up and down my leg numerous injuries to my body. I managed to get up. Had to being I was now in on coming traffic. My dog is now off leash across the intersection. I recalled him in this chaos no problem. The driver is now freaking out. The dog sees the threat. I after recalling him I had to call him off a potential bite. Call 911 get control of my dog and control the situation. Thats why you train. Its "Default'. Doesn't matter if you have a pet or working dog. It's about control and composer under pressure and that also applies to people. Always prepare for the unexpected. Always stay focused. I'm assuming the person who hit me was distracted. My training saved me and my dogs training saved him. 🙏🙏
@hans-alpinek9real You're welcome, Hans. Sorry for the delayed response. I'm still recovering. Fractured my wrist, and it's my dominant hand. Therapy, etc. The dog is good, though, lol. 😎
Good morning Hans. Could you post a video on personal protection? Thank you for your old school way of training have been very helpful. Love your sense of humor. Take care David
I like what you said about training your dog to have a desirable default. Interesting story regarding what to do when a SAR dog shuts down. I never thought about this before, but I can see how it happens. Clever fix to get him hyped again. If I am doing training 5mins twice a day, should I feed dog before or after training? Or does it even matter? Thanks. Sherri
my dog, when I adopted him at 6 yrs, I had to coax him to play. I got him to bite a stick and wrestle a little. Then I tried it at night (and he is always much more alert and ready to hunt at night), and he was much more active with wrestling the stick and then he wanted to come UNDER the stick. I quickly decided to take him back inside and think about that.
So my question is, why can’t we make a separate command for sport and another for protection. Say watch for sport meaning get the equipment, and say pazole for real protection? Theses dogs are versatile so why wouldn’t that work?
I believe you’d shut down your dog trying to train them that way. For example if you were training to say target equipment using prey drive you’d have to correct the dog for targeting the person which the dog would understand as them making a mistake then in the same hand you want them to target the the person with a different command and correct them if they target the equipment because you want civil aggression which the dog would understand as them making a mistake. I hope you can see where the challenge would arise.. even if that was possible now you’d have a dog who has the possibility of confusing those commands under stress which for sport could make you lose the competition or worse in a protection situation have obvious consequences… hence why the podcast talks a lot about serious protection work verses sport.
You can do it. I have done it. But there is a succession and first you need to do civil and then sport. it is complex way and it has many variables depending on the dog's prey defense ratio and level of natural protectiveness. It is called parallel dog training ( Or i call it that )

What the dog learns first
What he likes the most
What he will do the best
What he will revert to when under stress
Thank you.
beginning 3-4 minutes, good philosophy lesson for life.
I'm glad you picked up on that.
Good subject to absorb
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for watching

Maybe when transitioning from sport to protection, do it at night. :)
Think about what? :)
@@Armorakc That he was coming for ME: "Oh, you wanna PLAY?"
Good point. At night the dog is always more intense.

Tough time hearing the actual words. Those mics or somehow the sound is slightly muffled. Anyone else?
I have relisted the video on 2 different systems and it seemed to be fine. I am sorry for your trouble.
I have no issues with sound
I know you don't like e collar. Any suggestions for people with no voice?
The collar is an excellent tool. Learn how to use it before using it on your dog. There are excellent videos online.
Have you dogs attention on you and use hand signals or body gestures
E collar is a crutch. If you need crutch then use it.
A whistle?
"Canary Islands & Portugal" Do you mean Azores, Madeira and Portugal? ...Would one happen to be an older German guy, and a guy with initials TF?
My grandma is from the azores. What a place man
Yes it is him
