Seeing Lenny at the end with the ball in his mouth and just wagging his tail like mad - that is one happy guy! He is loving his job!

Many forget once trained isn't forever trained, consistency and constantly reinforcing & reminding the dogs of what they've already learned is crucial. 🙈🙉🙊

I use an e-collar. I know people do not like it, but it yields the best results. I don't use the zap function, just the vibrating function and it corrects at a much better timing than a pop on the leash (you control the timing).
I used to use collar, but my dog cough up blood once for pulling so hard towards another dog I never use another collar for leash again.

Room service - I'll have to remember that one.
I really dislike harnesses, they don't give much control over the dog. The only exception I would make is for toy dogs, very delicate necks.
The one problem I have with prong collars is that people use them as a magic collar rather than as a tool to give them control in order to train the dogs. Of course that's a people problem not a tool problem. The only caveat is that the prong collars can pop open sometimes. So as a safety measure, I've advised people to put on one of those thin nylon slip collars and attach the leash to that as a safety.

Question does this training work with a working dog ie. PSA dog or police dog?

I might be taking in a pom mix in my neighborhood that has been neglected most of its life. She’s very reactive and I’m trying to prepare the most I can. I walked her today and she did pretty well but my leash pops didn’t help towards close proximity people and dogs. This could definitely help and I’d definitely rather just work on commands first then try again. Maybe I can train her in my backyard a little bit this next time instead of just throwing her in the deep end.

Remember a pop is a pop and not a pull, which is a constant pressure. To do a pop, you have to have a bit of slack in the leash. So, you can't do it when the dog is already pulling unless you quickly move the leash towards the dog, to create slack, and then pop it towards you. Ideally, you walk this new dog FOR THE DOG, not for you, at least until for first 3 months (search dog 3, 3, 3 rule). So, you can be always looking for what will trigger the dog and be ready to pop the leash just before they pull it taught.
Pro tip, and this is more difficult the smaller the dog, pop the leash PARALLEL to the ground, not up diagonally towards your shoulder. It might seem trivial, but it's a significant part of the technique. If it's a pain for you to bend and drop low enough to get the leash parallel, realize that you won't need to correct as often once the dog learns.
Search for "loose leash walking" and "leash reactivity" and look for results on beckman's dog training channel. He has GREAT practical help and demonstrates on untrained customer dogs.
Search "first 48 hours with new dog" and look for the 40 minute vid from Hamilton dog training channel. Really good material on what to do with a new to you rescued dog. Hamilton does "deep dives". If you don't have time to sit and watch, try to listen to it in the background while doing something else.
Hopefully this channel doesn't delete this comment, if they're actually interested in helping people and dogs. Try different techniques to find what works for you and your dog.
Thanks for helping a dog in need and good luck!

Hi, we have two Estrela mountain dog puppies. They are almost three months old and we want to start training them. They can be stubborn at times. Is using a prong collar on a puppy a good idea? Thanks!

I’ve been using a prong on my dog since she was 4 months old she a German shepherd/ Belgian Malinois and she loves it and see it as time to go to work and not a negative thing. She actually gets excited when she see her prong. So no it’s not a bad thing just make sure your using it correctly

Wait until 6 months. Stay patient and persistent - remember they'll mature slowly, and do individual training sessions when you can.
My gaurdian didn't get easier until 1 1/2 - 2 years, and I believe they mature about the same rate as your breed. That first year is rough, but so worth the effort.

Hi Jacob, thank you for the very helpful video! As I have a very teenage sausage dog myself and am currently struggling with him pulling on the lead when he's too excited to meet and get to other dogs ( to the point where he seems to try and off himself out of excitment). So your last point probably rings true for me... I´ve been struggling to find the right equipment, especially collar that works (the slipcollars I´ve tried don't stay in the right place and tend to slip down the neck as soon as he sticks his nose to the floor). So I was wondering if you have any good equipment recommendations for working with sausage dogs ◡̈ ? (Btw love your content and sending greetings from Germany ! - Johanna ◡̈ )
