Thanks for your video! I fixed my PS3 and the YLOD is gone. Few things for others: 1. Make a screw map. So you will easily put it back. 2. Take your time at every step. 3. When pulling metal shields apart take extra care, just do it slowly but surely. Forcing can damage the copper pipes. 4. When putting metal shields back, remember about the hooks first (the ones shielding Ethm, HDMI etc sockets) 5. When screwing the security screw, make sure the lid from HDD is closed. The screw may fall inside the case and you will have to open PS3 again.
thx man. Your video worked a treat. My problem was the temp sensor thinking it was overheating, same issue as the YLOD. Use your method albeit without your flux and it worked like magic. GT6 no problem. Had it on for 3 hours without issue and fan is variable once again. 5 stars!

You need to take the heat spreaders off then heat the chips... The heat spreaders absorb so much of the heat that you can’t completely reflow the chips correctly. You can use less heat also and once done apply thermal paste under heat spreaders also.
I just used this approach and it worked fine. Thanks. My only comment would be to be careful with the blu-ray ribbon cable as it is made of cheese and easy to damage :)

This is a temporary fix and the more times you do it the less time the reflow works. I'd just pay a pro for a reball on my fatty but a slim probably wouldn't bother there's no cool factor.
if its a backwards compatible unit it is totally worth a reflow, you can actually buy the 40nm chips that come with a reflow solder screen and flux. Easy to do even with just a heat gun. if it is not a backwards unit its best to just trash it and replace or buy a new board altogether. If the label has moved your motor is fine and it's most likely the lens. if you don't feel like opening the drive up to replace the lens, which is a bit of a pain due to all the small springs. You could always buy a YLOD PS3 off eBay and steal the drive off it just make sure the drive is compatible with your model.
This is sort of bad info, it isn't a case of just getting the right model, the ps3 is "married" to the board of the drive it was shipped with, if you simply replace the drive with another one the PS3 will not use the new drive
As has been said before, this isn't exactly a permanent fix. With any luck, this procedure may help to revive a PS3 that's YLODed or RLODed. But, should you manage to get it working again after using a heat gun on it, be advised that you are on borrowed time; the console may continue working anywhere from months down to just hours. Use that time to back up your data for migration to a replacement PS3. After backing up, discontinue use of your broken console as it can no longer be considered reliable for normal use.
Well it's because your ps3 is sensing temperatures above the tier 3 fan power threshold perhaps try cleaning the dust from your ps3 and make sure fan exhausts have 6" of clearance also make sure it's on a hard surface. If you reflowed your ps3 it could also be you didn't apply the thermal paste properly. Just to name a few possibilities.

My PS3 had the same problem actually it's generally the laser reader inside the PS3 it's been a while but as I recall mine could still read DVD's and occasionally worked for Blu-Ray's. Sound right? If that's the issue you can buy a new laser at Amazon just make sure your PS3 is compatible with that laser. You also need to make sure the motor didn't go out to spin the disks. you can check this by inserting a game and letting the PS3 attempt to load (so wait like 20-30 seconds) and then eject it
You dont need a spreader. The clamp pressure takes care of that. Thermal paste doesn't drip at all, either. That's what working at Best Buy does to your brain apparently. Your credibility is suspect to me after hearing that nonsense.
Anyone watching this video today please heed my advice. Firstly this is not the best video when it comes to doing it by a heat gun, and secondly for the love of God remove the heat spreaders on both the GPU and CPU. With the right tools it is very easy and not as hard as people make it sound, if you don't do this they're going to overheat in the yellow light of death will come back. This information is brought to you by someone who personally owns a 2006 launch model that is never gotten yellow light of death before because I've done these steps to prevent it.

I did just that on a CECHA01 model with some arctic silver, didn't change a thing. Still getting the three beeps. Originally thought it was the power supply, but I'm pretty sure that it's actually the motherboard. I'm hesitant to try the above method, but I might give it a shot. Only downside is that I just reapplyed the thermal paste today and I don't want to clean and reapply something freshly applied. 9 bones for a tiny ass tube on newegg. It's good stuff though.
That ps3 is not YLod even RLod.. if it them, some of ball inside the gpu and cpu still contacted and you need to separate them by using reballing methods.
700 is too hot. I use heat at less than 400 degrees farenheit on both sides at the same time for about 15-20 minutes then let the board cool down completely before reassembly.
why do people insist on spreading... just put the bead on the middle and let the pressure spread the stuff out... works far better than trying to spread it out by hand...
the fan goes wild because you have to take off the heat shield thats protecting the CPU and put thermal paste on the chip the thermal paste on there is dried out that's why the fan goes wild
For all of you trying to fix the ylod permanently, you can't. Your ps3 will get ylod again after fixing it. Once fixed, copy all your saves to a USB and just buy a ps3 slim or super slim, which can't get ylod. It will cost you some money, but it's worth it.

Tried it . Didnt work. Well it did for 1-5seconds then it just got stuck like static tvs almost. Ive tried everything,thermopastr change,the coin ,even pcs venting cooler... Nothing! Pls help , i miss my baby

skip directly from 8:11 to 9:30 and you'll see exactly why uneven heating from the heatgun method sucks: it causes the mobo to warp and bow out in the middle where you're applying all the heat, further stressing the joints and ensuring that this fix won't last long. we do the almost the same thing on high power lasers but we use a industrial oven about 800 d good amount of flux so i would use a oven heat the whole board this video will work if done correctly good stuff
The reballing process consis on separate the chip from the PCB (In this case, the GPU and/or the CPU) and remove all the solder below them. Then put leaded solder balls where the solder points are and put again the chips. The solder used in this devices is a solder made of tin, silver and copper (Lead free solder) this solder has a higer melt point that the solder made of tin and Lead (Lead solder) and is more resistant to higher temperatures. But this "sturdy" status makes it weakness. With the use, and constant high temperatures, the solder stresses (that's how it is written?) and fractures doing a bad conection that derives in the YLOD error. The Leaded balls (little solder balls of lead solder) melts with a lower temerature, but this make them more flexible and versatile, so when they are heated and cooled they will return to its normal state avoiding the fractures. If you ask's "But then, Why they use Lead free solder?" the answer is simple, the had to. The RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) compilant (applied in all the electronical manufacturers since july 2006) forces the manufacturers to avoid the use of substances as much as possible (like Mercury, Lead, chrome, cadmium and other two materials that I can't remember now). If you are going to reball, ask about wath type of solder balls they use, if they use Lead free solder balls, the solution will last near a year, but the YLOD will return. Greetings. LShizer the only downside is that the thermal paste does you no good if the board is shot, whether it be by horrible engineering, exposure to excessive heat, bout force trauma... You get the idea. It'd be nice if just slapping on paste and cobbling it back together fixed the problem, but that doesn't work. Once it gets to soldering shit, I'm out. Fuk that.

this is just a temporary fix a promise fixes rebuilding the CPU and GPU + he did it remove the heat shield to put thermal paste on the chip that the heat shield is protecting
9 years later we know that this is NOT A FIX, just temporary. The only real fix is to replace the RSX... or other components that are defective. You can blame NVIDIA for that, they knowingly shipped defective RSX chips to SONY...
yeah mine doesn't play either dvd's cd's or blurays. it was my best idea to ask someone who has fixed them before before I go messing around with it. currently I use it for Netflix I got to go and fix it so I can play some games on it. because I don't want to buy another ps2 after buying 2 ps3's. I hate the slim because no ps2 capability. lol.
Hey helpful video, I never refluxed my system all I done was put on new thermal paste but I used a cheap brand and I still have the YLOD could using a cheap thermal paste cause this please let me know soon?
7 years later you get a reply! No. Using cheap thermal paste will not change your results. All this does is reheat the substright and solder joints. if they are too far gone this fix wont work, plus if you use the wrong flux its going to cost you more in the long run so it was good that you skipped that step. One flux will help and the other will hurt the PCB in just a few short hours of heat so im not sure why he did not bother to mention this. Also, this fix just puts the console into what I like to call "zombie mode" its up and moving around but eventually will end up being put down for good. I used to use this method to fix customers Video cards to get them a few more hours of use while they wait on their replacement - this is not and was never a permanent fix.

Don’t listen to anyone that tells you to use a heat gun or an oven on a motherboard. Go the extra mile and learn about reballing. Reflow is only a temporary fix and could damage your motherboard beyond repair.

Incorrect - You need to spread it very thinly and evenly over the entire surface. A dot in the centre will not guarantee an even spread and therefore, very likely to give a bad thermal contact

After 3 failed attempts, I finally got my working by putting a weight on the chip as soon as I took the heat off it. Letting it cool that way. :)

Reballing a laptop costs about $30 so if you bring your motherboard to someone with the equipment i dont see why it wouldn’t cost the same

I would say that's a permanent way to remove paint out of the wood or walls
i just did this, with out flux, 500 degree heatgun, i stayed over for 15 minutes constantly moving it and fast.

How long should you wait after putting th thermoglue before turning the ps3 on ?
I mean if you didn’t turn it on by now then I think you can rn.
we do the almost the same thing on high power lasers but we use a industrial oven about 800 d good amount of flux so i would use a oven heat the whole board this video will work if done correctly good stuff

The reballing process consis on separate the chip from the PCB (In this case, the GPU and/or the CPU) and remove all the solder below them. Then put leaded solder balls where the solder points are and put again the chips.
The solder used in this devices is a solder made of tin, silver and copper (Lead free solder) this solder has a higer melt point that the solder made of tin and Lead (Lead solder) and is more resistant to higher temperatures. But this "sturdy" status makes it weakness. With the use, and constant high temperatures, the solder stresses (that's how it is written?) and fractures doing a bad conection that derives in the YLOD error. The Leaded balls (little solder balls of lead solder) melts with a lower temerature, but this make them more flexible and versatile, so when they are heated and cooled they will return to its normal state avoiding the fractures.
If you ask's "But then, Why they use Lead free solder?" the answer is simple, the had to. The RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) compilant (applied in all the electronical manufacturers since july 2006) forces the manufacturers to avoid the use of substances as much as possible (like Mercury, Lead, chrome, cadmium and other two materials that I can't remember now).
If you are going to reball, ask about wath type of solder balls they use, if they use Lead free solder balls, the solution will last near a year, but the YLOD will return.

I would assume not because he didn't take off the heat spreaders and apply new thermal paste to them... The fact that he calls this a "permanent fix" is laughable.

It is actually as to the constructive comments about spreading thermal compound i think they are of value and definitely good to implement.
LShizer the only downside is that the thermal paste does you no good if the board is shot, whether it be by horrible engineering, exposure to excessive heat, bout force trauma... You get the idea. It'd be nice if just slapping on paste and cobbling it back together fixed the problem, but that doesn't work. Once it gets to soldering shit, I'm out. Fuk that.

If you people didn't know they are meant to even the heat flow and that they're not the actual chips you're idiots. Not trying to be a douche but it's true..

this is just a temporary fix a promise fixes rebuilding the CPU and GPU + he did it remove the heat shield to put thermal paste on the chip that the heat shield is protecting
9 years later we know that this is NOT A FIX, just temporary. The only real fix is to replace the RSX... or other components that are defective.
You can blame NVIDIA for that, they knowingly shipped defective RSX chips to SONY...
yeah mine doesn't play either dvd's cd's or blurays. it was my best idea to ask someone who has fixed them before before I go messing around with it. currently I use it for Netflix I got to go and fix it so I can play some games on it. because I don't want to buy another ps2 after buying 2 ps3's. I hate the slim because no ps2 capability. lol.

Hey helpful video, I never refluxed my system all I done was put on new thermal paste but I used a cheap brand and I still have the YLOD could using a cheap thermal paste cause this please let me know soon?
7 years later you get a reply! No. Using cheap thermal paste will not change your results. All this does is reheat the substright and solder joints. if they are too far gone this fix wont work, plus if you use the wrong flux its going to cost you more in the long run so it was good that you skipped that step. One flux will help and the other will hurt the PCB in just a few short hours of heat so im not sure why he did not bother to mention this. Also, this fix just puts the console into what I like to call "zombie mode" its up and moving around but eventually will end up being put down for good. I used to use this method to fix customers Video cards to get them a few more hours of use while they wait on their replacement - this is not and was never a permanent fix.
There is no such thing as a permanent fix when it's that problem it's pretty much dead

Don’t listen to anyone that tells you to use a heat gun or an oven on a motherboard. Go the extra mile and learn about reballing. Reflow is only a temporary fix and could damage your motherboard beyond repair.
So what are you supposed to do?
@@man2539 either pay someone the orice of a new ps3 to reball it, buy expensive equipment and learn how to do it yourself, or just buy a used ps3 replacement console on eBay like I did because it’s cheaper and less of a hassle...

That comment's old, but it doesn't work like that with PS3s, it won't go to the edges. Every good video recommend spreading it.
Incorrect - You need to spread it very thinly and evenly over the entire surface.
A dot in the centre will not guarantee an even spread and therefore, very likely to give a bad thermal contact
