How to remove ps3 ihs plates

  • FOR REMOVAL:
    For the gpu/rsx I use a flat head screwdriver size 2.
    For the cpu/cell I use a nail file sanded down to about 1mm,
    For scraping the glue off the cpu i use another sanded down nail file.
    FOR RE-ATTACHMENT:
    I use arctic silver 5 on the shiny part of the chip and I use silicon thermal conductive glue for the top of the ram chips and the edge of the cpu/cell.

    @bobbydowngrades HI i attempted to delid my phat ps3 and was successful with the SB and RSX but couldn't get the CELL off and I believe i damaged a trace or 2 however I'm unable to discern if this is true or not since i can't get the IHS off also in order to soften the glue i tried using a hair dryer which did make the chip feel warm to touch however i couldn't cut in. Once reassembled i got the flashing red light. The following day I called a reputable game repair shop and they basically said don't even bother bringing it in and to just forget about it. Is their any reason I shouldn't listen to them?

    • @bobbydowngrades
      @bobbydowngrades  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you did damage a trace or more than one they can be re laid, however the cost of that repair would most likely be quite high compared to the price of the ps3 unit.
      It depends which model it is. If it's a common model then get a new one and you could always take the CID from the broken one.
      If it's a special model then it may be worth having the traces re laid.
      That being said, I know from experience that the traces on top of the cell chip are very difficult to replace and they take an experienced repairer.
      I would first double check the sb and the rsx to make sure both are in place and undamaged.
      Not replacing the thermal paste and glue correctly underneath the rsx plate can cause the issue you describe and of course if a leg on the south bridge is out of place then the same can happen.

    • @bobbydowngrades
      @bobbydowngrades  ปีที่แล้ว

      Also a hairdryer will most likely heat the glue of the cell plate to soften it but it would take a very long time to do so.

    • @bobbydowngrades
      @bobbydowngrades  ปีที่แล้ว

      Super slim models were made very badly with many poor quality parts.
      From what you said about the storage replacement reducing the frequency of the issue it could be possible that there is some issue with the ps3s internal storage. Some super slims have a 12gb built in and some have a much smaller memory.
      It could be possible that the internal storage could need resetting or formatting.

      Firstly using a hairdryer is causing more damage and amateur techniques should never be used,,
      The problem with the PS3 is that the gpu (rsx chip) has a problem with the solder balls underneath it that connect it to the motherboard,
      The correct way to repair it is to reball the gpu chip,
      This must be done by a professional and reflowing it is a temporary fix,
      There's a video on this channel called how to reball an Xbox gpu,
      That will show you the process as it's exactly the same process as a PS3 gpu

      With the phat models there are only 3 types of disc drive.
      The ones with the daughterboard outside the drive (as with your A01) or the ones with the daughterboard on the inside and the ones with the daughterboard inside but with a smaller ribbon cable that plugs into the motherboard.
      As a rule CECH A to G use the outside version and CECH H onwards use the inside version.
      BUT all drives should work in all models providing the ribbon size matches.

      Yes i have done all slim models like this,
      Your correct the glue is thinner on 2001 model,
      I recommend looking for an artists palet knife, some can be very thin, you can then slide it under the corner of the cpu and cut the glue without using any heat,
      Remember you cannot go straight accross though because of the shiny part of the cpu under the ihs plate,
      So slide the artiats palet knife under one corner and slide it along the edges,
      Hope that helps, good luck

  • @joesaiditstrue
    @joesaiditstrue 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    your GPU procedure was perfect, however your CPU was not a method I would recommend. I would try to find a metal spudger similar to yours, and bend it in a similar way but also sharpen the edges as much as possible and then heat up the IHS like you did but then just cut the glue as slowly as possible. I wouldn't be putting any excess force on the blade. Not only can you accidentally damage the CPU, you can easily scratch the board or knock components off/rip pads off. slower is better

    • @bobbydowngrades
      @bobbydowngrades  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There definitely is a risk, that's why I mentioned practicing on dead boards first, since making the video I haven't changed the technique only because I'm used to it, there is a small artists knife that allows you to not need to heat the cup, it's thin enough to cut the glue like butter.
      Thanks for your input.

      Incorrect,

Watch from 11:10 to 13:30 on double speed, you can see how the board bends upwards. And one more thing: you do not need to heat the CPU IHS because it's held on the silicone. The heat won't make silicone any easier to remove. You only need to heat the GPU IHS because it's held on thermal glue.

      Sorry I do not have time to watch videos back in double speed, If you have and could see the board bend it is a trick of the eye and bro why would you watch the video in double speed lol.

      95% of the time replacing the paste underneath the ihs plates will solve overheating issues but sometimes if a chip has taken a lot of damage it wont solve the issue

    • @bobbydowngrades
      @bobbydowngrades  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks.
      Yes mx4 is a good paste.
      If you carefully scrape off the old glue that is there and put mx4 on the silver part of the chip and on the top of the ram chips (in each corner of the rsx) then sit the IHS plates in place then put mx4 on top of the plates and put the ps3 back together the pressure of the clamps will hold the IHS plates in place.
      Just be careful when you put it back together and take your time.
      I have seen ps3s last years like that.

    • @bobbydowngrades
      @bobbydowngrades  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are some sections on the chips where there are traces,
      Gold lines underneath the green coating,
      These traces carry information as part of the circuits of the motherboard,
      So if you scratch through a trace and break it the signal cannot be carried from the chip to where it was going

    great video, Im thinking of taking my PS3 for this little improvement tour as sort of an interest/enthousiast thing.
    Question though, you take of the IHS of the CPU and remove the glue and you said you put some glue back, what I want to know is, if you remove all the glue around the cell cpu and off the ihs, is the height still enough? like if I would put it back on is the weight of the headsink still spread to the sides or is it then pressing on the cpu (meaning it makes the IHS useless).

    • @bobbydowngrades
      @bobbydowngrades  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would replace the existing glue with new glue in the exact same way that it was on there before,
      I recommend using silicone glue rather than hardening glue as it will give it a bit of flexibility after its dried,
      Also I recommend leaving it all to settle for a day or two after applying new paste and glue,
      It's possible to not glue them but in my experience of you do that you end up changing the paste every say 3 months,
      As long as you use the new glue in fashion with the old glue, position and thickness I mean, then you'll be fine

    • @bobbydowngrades
      @bobbydowngrades  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Felix Snow
      Ylod is just the PS3 saying it has something wrong with it,
      If it stopped turning on before you changed the thermal paste then yes it could need a reflow,
      I never recommend reflows tho only reballing as it's a much more thorough way of fixing,
      Many ps3s can live with the cpu at 79 and it not cause a problem for many years and some cannot handle short duration,
      Without looking at it myself I couldn't diagnose it 100% correctly but one thing I've noticed over the years is it's very very rare for the cpu to need reballing and it's normally the gpu that has solder problems

      It's very easy,
      For example when I use my bga machine the room must be a certain temperature before I start otherwise the process cannot be completed with 100% success,
      It sounds like the gpu either got to hot or was heated for too long, that's normally an issue that makes then fail,

      yes definitely, 73 is too hot,
      use a fan control like webman and make sure you can hear the fan,
      if the cpu is still getting to 73 then the paste needs changing,
      as a rule of thumb,
      fats should never reach 65 on either chip and slims should never reach 60,
      although some ps3s are just hot and no amount of work can stop them reaching over those temperatures

      The Chitty Chatty Commenter
      Unleaded solder melts at around 217 degrees celcius, leaded solder melts at around 187 dependant on the percentage of lead mix (187 at 40% lead which I believe you can't buy anymore)
      Sony only uses unleaded solder but I'm guessing it's lowest possible quality haha, solder ball problems normally occur from the cooling rather than the melting with the solder balls cracking rather than melting into each other
