    Thank you for making this video. I'm a 2 yr violin student (26 yrs old) and trying to identify when my playing is sharp or flat.
    For those commenting, all musicians are sharp or flat sometimes. It's not an insult to point it out, it's objective and it doesn't mean you're bad. 😊 Just means that the tone isn't vibrating at a specific pitch. All notes have a measurable pitch.
    As a beginning musician, it's sometimes difficult to tell exactly when I am sharp. I'm better at knowing when I'm playing flat.
    Having no frets is cool lol❤

    The early singers (I didn’t listen much past them) were definitely not sharp. They chose to riff slightly, and would sing a half step, or sometimes more, above the original note. It’s very rare to accidentally sing too high, especially if you’re belting like they were (particularly Ariana Grande). The higher you sing, the more difficult it is to produce a note, at least in the upper registers. The flat notes were all in order, and are significantly more common than people might think. It’s very easy to underestimate how much -oomph- a will need.

    • @hiy9846
      @hiy9846 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      If you're talking about One Last Time, Ariana Grande indeed sang a semitone higher than the diatonic note (A insteas of A flat). But since the song is in A flat major, it is considered to be sharp because it isn't in that key. The fact that you do it on purpose or go beyond the limits of the original song doesn't mean that you can't be off key, as demonstrated above.

    • @remimoys1506
      @remimoys1506 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hiy she just raised the whole song by a semitone during her tour. That’s why it’s a A5 and not an Ab5.

      That's because there is this weird phenomenon where slightly sharp (around 30-35 cents) sustained high belts can sound very good to our ears. In fact. some singers do this often (possibly on purpose). Cher did it in her final note of the US national anthem and I've even seen her do it in the studio version of a song (I can't remember the title though, but it's the one where she hits an E5)

    Melodies are written on a particular tonality (meaning a succesion of sounds that makes sense/sounds pleasant), that's why it's important to sing natural, flat or sharp notes and not changing them, since it will sound disonant for any trained ear (admitedly, disonance sounds cool many times). Also sharp/flat are not interchangeable terms.

    # / sharp note - b / flat note = the original note the singer wanted to hit. 1:29 You’re safe, Taylor Swift. Hit whatever note you want in my order, and you get the original note. OR b / flat note + # / sharp note = 1 flat note and 1 sharp note - flat note = original note.

    There is a profound difference between singing transposed (by a halftone for instance) and flat/sharp. Bach could tell you more about that. ;)
    Most of these performers sing with a variation or transposition that sounds perfectly in place. Others though, like 3:12, are just plain out of tune.

    The first ariana and some of the clips isn't sharp or flat. Basically sharp is a condition when you want to sing E5 but you sang it a lil bit higher but doesn't high enough to be counted as F5. So you ended up hitting something between E5 amd F5 notes. Flat is similar with sharp. But flat is you hit a slightly lower notes from the notes you supposed to be hit. Sorry if my english is too hard to understand

    • @hiy9846
      @hiy9846 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A5 is not in the key of the song, so not diatonic. It's in the key of A flat major, so an A is sharp. You can't say it isn't off key because the singer does it on purpose.

      Actually taylor is a very decent vocalist she sure as hell showed some improvements in her latest tour and her range is noticeably wider and she does some vibrato from time to time so she's reaaallly good and she has a musical coming so she probs had to take some vocal coaching

    • @versecorner507

      fA 13 yeah actually that is true, she is now being more vocally consistent, and she clearly has worked hard on her voice, but rewind a bit to when she used to sing in multiple keys and would either go sharp or flat (most likely flat), she still does that but she's improving, so I think we are going to be seeing a more respected Taylor when comes to singing, because right now she is still kinda seen as that little princess who can write good songs but not sing so good

    Isn't singing sharp and flat notes supposed to be out of tune and not off key? I thought off key is singing different notes that are not harmonious to the key the instrument plays. I feel that many times the phrases off key and out of tune are used as if they are the same thing

    Can I put in a note here... Some bands tune their music down a semi tone live I see this allot with Rock and Metal Artists but could also apply to pop singers so basically they’re singing flat but it sounds okay because they’re tuned flat like for example check out Avril Lavigne’s song “I’m with you” on some live performances she sings it tuned 1 semi tone lower than the original because they tuned there instruments like that to accommodate her voice or save her voice but anyone can go off key while singing
