Especially compared to the rest of former soviet union, yes our farming industry was bigger, but that's because we were exporting a lot more food which at the time could feed so many people outside of Latvia. and even today with smaller industries we're still exporters of food, our shipping does very good at prodiving good produce for the nation, fishing and manufactoring is also doing well. Please go read about Latvia instead of listening to propaganda made by the kremlin, those outlets are bad for you, your people and your nation. Also, when it comes to employment, keep in mind there's plenty of jobs to go around, not much we can do about the fact that people are lazy and don't want to work. Таким образом - богатство одних стран - следствие исторически сложившегося империализма, когда страны Европы в прямом смысле выкачивали ресурсы "неразвитых варваров", как их тогда называли, а сейчас, владея капиталом международные корпорации переносят производство туда, где труд дешевле, и где налогов меньше и захватывают специалистов и учёных, на обучение которых уходит огромное количество труда. Пост-советские страны - одни из стран переферии, и стать страной центра не получиться, как бы мы не старались, для этого нужно эксплуатировать другие страны.
Выход для рабочего класса всех стран - один, и он слева.

Absolutely true. Even back in the USSR, The Baltics were seen as "somewhat exotic", and people travelling in the Baltic SSR's described as "feeling like being in Europe". For Lithuania, this was greatly to do with the fact that the general secretary of the Lithuanian Communist Party, Antanas Sniečkus, while having been a devoted communist and having comitted atrocities against the people, was a great nationalist and did all he could to stop the Russian migration to the Lithuanian SSR and tried to make Lithuania as less reliant from the Russian SFSR as possible. This is now also why Lithuania is the only Baltic country that doesn't have the "Russian minority" problem. The percentage of Russians in Lithuania is just too small so most of them simply integrate.

@@anonymanonym6236 That's unlikely to happen because if you look at all the eastern European countries, the standard of living for the ones that joined the EU has gone up a lot compared to the ones that didn't yet and the only other area that I can think of that has comparable gdp per capita to the eastern EU members is Moscow, so hate on the EU all you want but at the end of the day, it's bringing a lot of wealth to those countries and that for the most part is what most care about.

Not to mention during soviet occupation, we had best access to western info. Meaning we were lot better prepared for independence

Narva (Estonia's most eastern city) was bombed to shit during WW2 and turned into mostly russian, so that Narva could hardly ever serve as the strong defense against Russia again, as it did during Estonia's War of Independence. But we are slowly turning that crapshack franchise around. If NATO stays true and respects its Article 5 on even the smallest of its members, then Estonia moves onward and will finally get rid of the shitty taste the russians left behind for good. It's a mistake to consider ALL of the former soviet republics as NEW formed independant states after collapse of the soviet empire. Three Baltic republics WERE independent states between the two world wars and REGAINED independence. So Ukraine also had a very short period of independence 1918. - 1920.

After 1940, when France and Britain lost to Nazi Germany on the continent,USSR realized that it would fight Germany alone. Oil products, natural gas, coal, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, wood, lumber, cotton, wool, as well as some types of machinery (tractors, combines, automobiles) and equipment were imported from the USSR to the Baltic economic region. Food and feed grains were also imported.

That's because Baltic nations always were in their hearts and minds European. Even despite long years of different occupations by various forms of russia, we still considered ourselves Europeans. That's why during soviet times all other soviet countries citizens considered Baltic states as WEST. Because we actually were, even under occupation. And gaining our freedom back was seen as tiny window of opportunity to rush back to Europe's family. And now we're witnessing complete success of this decision. Bitter comments from kremlin trolls say it all. But the fact is obvious: average citizen of Baltic nations lives way better than average russian, or any other ex-soviet citizen.

As a Georgian i can tell you that our current writing and language has existed for more than 1000 years but we just adapted Russian since we were in USSR for almost a century , for now people that were born in soviet times can speak Russian well and also Georgian as well like my dad and mom but, for me and other young people we just speak Georgian

While arbitrary stats like gdp, quality of life don't obviously show the full picture it was damn well a good decision.
Estonia during the early days of re-independence had turbulent times. As one example we literally had "mafia wars" with assassinations, bombings. Basically what it was was our oligarhs, rich businessmen of the old state vs the new government trying to grab power back from those guys. We can consider that a success. We have videos of our president riding to big factories and literally telling the bosses who liked the old days to "lower that soviet flag" as they were still trying to resist the change.
Me personally, having more or less born as we got re-independent have seen the change happen. Less people are going to work to Finland as our economy is slowly building up and with the travel the difference isn't that good for every job pay wise. We have our own foreign workforce mostly from Ukraine now. Last month I made neto around 1800€. So I am seeing a change, and a change in mentality. My own work sector, a couple of years ago buying good equipment became cheaper vs the cost of workers. Meaning, as it should be, its now cheaper to buy top equipment vs keeping 2 people on the same job as workforce costs are bigger in the long run. So there is actual practical differences I am seeing year to year.
We have problems, due to being a small nation certain good costs a lot and perhaps we have a somewhat housing/rent bubble in the captial due to everyone urbanizing but overall strides are being made. Whats more important I feel like I have a goal to work torward and the overall systems of our state are in place to move forward. Stability and small steady growth is good, well we have to now live through another probable rescession but that is more or less a global thing. Then again I like what my country is doing, and I like most of my neighboring countries, Latvia, Finland, Lithuania, Sweden and the rest of EU.
