Quite a lot has changed since this video came out. Some changes that have happened as of December 2022: 1. Queen Elizabeth II is no longer the reigning monarch. Her heir, Prince Charles, succeeded her following her death and became King Charles III in September 2022. 2. Barbados became a republic in November 2021 and no longer has a monarch. 3. The United Kingdom is no longer a member of the European Union (cf. 1:57) following Brexit. 4. The status of the British Indian Ocean Territory as one of the British Overseas Territories is currently in limbo after the International Court of Justice ruled in February 2019 that the UK unlawfully separated the Chagos Archipelago from the rest of Mauritius. This ruling was affirmed by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in January 2021.
As a Welsh Brit, this is really encouraging to find someone from the other side of the pond who knows what they're talking about. Will be saving this to circulate.
for the people that are saying that they don’t care, that’s fine, but at least keep in mind that this does bug people who are from these places. if you know this, it’s refreshing to them because a lot of people don’t like being referred to as being from ireland when they are from england or another territory. it’s like being korean but being called chinese, or being hispanic but being called spanish.
Valid point except for the examples at the end as they’re not exactly comparable. Korean people and Chinese people speak different languages, have different accents, and can look different. And Spanish people are Hispanics but I get your point
I’m Scottish and have lived and worked in the US for three years. Everyone here thinks my accent is Irish. I don’t mind a bit, but it gets embarrassing when people start going on about their Irish roots and where their Irish ancestors came from. Americans tend to talk fast and loud, so it can take a little time to get it into the conversation I’m not Irish. On one occasion I didn’t want to embarrass a lovely elderly lady among her friends, so I became Irish for one evening.
As an American viewer watching this again, I found it quite a useful explanation of the difference between "England", "Great Britain", and the sovereign state known as the United Kingdom! These differences are the reason why I have sometimes heard it said that Elizabeth II was _not_ a "Queen of England" (to use the common, informal phrase), but a "Queen of the United Kingdom": because the United Kingdom isn't England! Thanks for the video!

That doesn't stop him from being King of the UK and other dominions at the same time. (When he leaves our soil, he reverts to being our constitutional head of state). Mad, eh. That's why we love it.
When I meet people online, they ask me where I'm from and I reply with "Wales" then they ask "where's that?" and I reply with "A little country next to England" and then they say "Ireland?". It kills me on the inside everytime.

But you get the opportunities to vote for your independence where as England doesnt get the choice to vote for its independence unfair i think. The English independence party does exist but its not took seriously so no opportunity to vote for it. If Scotland becomes independent they not only get to govern themselves but they also get a say in English government yet we wont be able to have any say in their country if this happens. You also have your own national anthems where we dont get the opportunity of having our own one like{Land of Hope And Glory}we instead have to have God Save the Queen which is also Great Britains national anthem,so England gets no separate identity here and its probably why people from around the rest of the world refer to her as the queen of England and not Britain, which can be really annoying for the English people who may not like the Royals that much

The best comment so far, I totally agree
and only American people can understand him
Well it's really 5 minutes. Maybe in class he looked at the clock and saw that 5 mins left. So he started talking "slowly" like this and a student recorded his lecture and posted on youtube to make fun of him. Instead it became popular and Grey started using TH-cam. Hence we got him.
But it's just a theory. A LAME THEORY.
Hahaha
I appreciate your dedication and admire your intelligence 🙌🏾 👏🏾 thanks
I usually watch videos at 1.5x speed, but for this one I actually had to slow it down to 1.25 to follow it.. so congratulations, you actually got me to slow down a video for a change SuperVinlin
This is so much complicated than Westeros and its 7 kingdoms
more# .#
I wonder if Westeros is based on Heptarchy - 7 Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in England which existed in early Middle Ages
+edgartj17 Actually Westeros is just called the seven kingdoms, but it doesn't actually have seven kingdoms. It was when Aegon conquered Westeros that there were seven kingdoms ruled by their own kings. There ain't no room for mistakes!

The U.K. clears up a lot of potential confusion.
I have read though that Cumbria, was celtic until the 10th Century, with its own language Cumbric. If it had remained isolated, it might have developed into a separate country being neither Scotland or England.
Eminem: *exists*
CGP Grey: let me introduce myself
So underrated comment.
People: Eminem is the fastest rapper
CGP Grey: allow me to introduce myself
Bobby Firmino!!!!
CGP Grey: Now this looks like a job for me.
Fascinating! I just can't figure out how often new videos appear?
I'm English and it's so nice for someone to explain it. Thank you! Xx
Let’s appreciate that this man’s ability to talk incredibly quickly but coherently has blessed us with this five minute video
Skillage in the village
Wdym he talks too slow, I have to put 1.3x speed on
You should turn the speed back to normal

That was bloody informative
Imagine by the time he's finished talking he realizes his microphone wasn't recording.
That's probably what happened the first time when he spoke normally and realized his mic wasn't on. He then got frustrated, turned on the mic and recorded this voice over.
I remember reading that during an Olympics medal ceremony, Canada, Australia, and the USA won gold, silver, and bronze (don't remember which country for which medal).. but a British commenter said something along the lines of "all Britain's colonies". so England really wins.

This video epitomizes the speed and succinctness i appreciate the most when im deliberately learning

as an English person I find it really funny when everyone gets it wrong

Binging Grey videos, you realize how long he's been doing this and how far he's come
Incorrect, when people say they are Irish they refer to race, not geography. Irish people are from both Northern and Southern Ireland.
British’ refers to the population of three sub countries of Scotland, Wales, England. Where ‘English, Scottish, Welsh’ refers to the race of the indigenous people of these regions.

its too slow.i just want you to speak 4x faster

even then I'm gonna need to up the speed 1.25x

The arguing nowdays between England,Scotland and Wales is mainly over sports,Rugby and Football being the main ones
Yet we all share the same sense of humour
yes, this laddies got imself in sum troubles eh?
+Andrew Taylor hi oka Ruto
+Venslide G Uh.......hi.......
The main arguments these days are the Celtic countries are sick of being told what to do by England!
You also have your own national anthems where we dont get the opportunity of having our own one like{Land of Hope And Glory}we instead have to have God Save the Queen which is also Great Britains national anthem,so England gets no separate identity here and its probably why people from around the rest of the world refer to her as the queen of England and not Britain, which can be really annoying for the English people who may not like the Royals that much
Very informative. Now can you do the entire video again but in song?
Finally question answered, thank you 😊
