    Here’s how to wire and test a winch in your garage floor. I use it to bring disabled vehicles into the garage so I don’t need other people to help push and I can save my energy. So far it works great! This Harbor Freight Badland winch is very affordable, but I have put some other potentially better options above, along with various accessories that can improve the install. Overall this is fairly quick and easy, especially if you know what to do beforehand. Let me know if you have any questions or ever do a similar install!

    Part 1 on how I installed this winch in the garage floor is here: th-cam.com/video/R_CLTfezvrI/w-d-xo.html
    Wiring this winch up was quite easy and the first test was only slightly nerve wracking. I installed it quite a while ago and it has been great so far!
    If you have any questions let me know. If you are interested in doing your own install I have put several links in the description to point you in the right direction. Thanks!

    exactly what I needed to know. have a classic bmw project car (4400 lbs of not running vehicle) that has been in my garage for a while and I need to remodel the garage, but she takes up a lot of room. Now I can move her out, do my remodel and get her back in (slightly larger winch). I purchased a set of GoJak lifts that help me move it while in the garage on a flat surface, but would not work to get it in and out. Thanks for sharing.

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome! Exactly why I wanted this as well, as you probably saw. I think the heaviest vehicle I have pulled so far is around 3,000 lbs and it didn't really struggle. As long as your driveway is pretty flat about any winch should handle it. I also smoothed the step up into my garage and it made it even easier of course. If you can, upgrade to a synthetic winch rope, pretty cheap I can send a link if you want. Or at least throw a winch blanket over the cable for safety if you wanna be extra cautious. :)

    I just did this project today, thanks for the video. I bought the same one from harbor freight, a little upgraded one but still 2500 . Although I have to say, the model you mentioned was no longer 50 bucks, lol, must be the inflation now at 84. I Should have done this years ago. My driveway is at a small incline so pushing cars in garage would be a pain just in case, so this would be so much better. It looks small but I guess it does the job. I suppose a 2500 should have no problem pulling small coupes like mine . I can't help but get chills seeing the car get pulled, but I shouldn't be worried; its doing what it's intended to do.

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      $84! Dang. I think usually you had to hunt for a good coupon to get the super low $50 price. Seems the cheapest it goes for now is around $70. Still cheap at least. The way winches are rated is strange. Technically the rating is actually how much weight the winch could pull straight up with no resistance with all other factors being ideal, I believe. So really pulling a rolling vehicle which weighs 2500lbs across an almost flat surface is no problem. Don't 100% quote me on that, but basically even up a small incline a small winch like this should be able to pull something rather large. Def glad it worked well for you! Has saved me some back aches for sure.

    I purchased one of these and it was broken, ever did work... Glad you had better luck. I think it's a great idea to use this instead of your back! Oh, save your battery, put a block of wood under that thing. I've killed a battery or two before by leaving them on the ground.

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ouch, bad luck! Harbor Freight is usually good about replacing things if they are broken when you buy them though. This is definitely a cheap winch, nothing heavy duty about it. That said, it seems to work for my purposes! As for the batteries on cement, every bit of research and personal experience I have says that's a false hood. I have like eight batteries sitting on the cement and none of them discharge, especially the one used in this video. I believe that's just a hangover from very old battery designs. I do appreciate it though! I believed the same thing until a few years ago.

    • @3Wheels1Block
      @3Wheels1Block 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@802Garage I may have had some elder batteries, could have been coincidence😂... Harbor Freight was going to replace it, I had already drilled holes in the floor and everything, it was more hassle at that point, so I just returned it, but I have had one of their 12,000 pound winches for about 14 years, and the lock mechanism just failed a month ago (motor still works fine), pretty impressive for a $300 winch that has been dragging all sorts of stuff up on the trailer that it is mounted to. I am definitely a fan of Harbor Freight for many reasons.

    @AztecWarrior69 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I added the previous comment I left in part 1 also.
    Whenever you are pulling with this winch, you should use a snatch block or pulley to make the winch work less. It doubles the pulling force. This also helps because the strongest pulling force is when the spool has only one full wrap of cable. With each wrap of the cable the winch has les pulling force. It is best to have as much of that cable out. To reach the vehicle use a chain to make it. This also help out with that duty cycle.
    Use a car floor mat , rug or jacket on top of the cable. This will keep the cables from whipping if it brakes.
    As I previously said use Anderson plugs. In your case, getting that remote receiver to the front (or at least as much as you can) of the garage, would help you out a lot. If you can get an old (12 to 10 gauge, Ten is better) extension cord and put in those Anderson plugs. Run the cord to the winch, connect with Anderson Plug. You won't have to sit there with the remote and arm out the window. Disconnect battery when not in use, helps keep the battery charged.
    Last thing. Tell that youtuber friend that you can now pull up cars onto ramps. A couple of 2 x 6s wedged against the back wall and at base of ramp will get that car up a set of ramps with ease. Just make sure to run the cable to the back of the car and with that Snatch Block go back to the winch. (Or to the front of the car if you are putting the back of the car in the air. ).Doing that will HELP TO NOT change the pulling force from level to pulling down on suspension, and in reverse, pulling up on the winch. And it is better on the winch to let out more cable. As I have already mentioned.
    One more thing about the Anderson Plugs. With that battery already having a plug (if you follow my advice) , you can cut a set of jumper cables in half and put on the Anderson Plugs. So when you need to jump a car with that battery, all you need to do is make the connections to the dead battery first, then plug in the jumping battery. No sparks. Sparks are the reason people connect the good battery first and to the posts and the cable to the bad battery positive and negative to the engine block. Just in case the battery is venting flammable fumes and explodes. Connecting the battery straight to the posts is best but when you make the connection if a spark flies it may be bad. So when making the actual connection further away will help prevent sparks but it will help transfer the current better.
    Previous
    What you should have done is set a receiver mounting plate. Called a Step Bumper Receiver. (Link 1) . Drill all your holes and add some oversized nuts and washers between plate and floor.
    Get some 2" square tubing (draw bar stalk) and weld (or have it welded) a winch mounting plate on to it. Like Link 2. Make it so you can put in a smaller tube in front , this is for making a place to hook the cable back onto. Comes in handy for adding a snatch block, doubling the capacity of the winch.
    And last upgrade the winch to the 3500lbs (it comes with the plate). Not only will you be able to pull more ( I know you are just pulling cars on flat concrete but keep reading) but the mounting holes are not in the way of the cable.
    Why? Well it is way easier to mount. Also when the winch gives out and needs replacing it is way easier to do. If you are pulling the winch off after years of operation those bolts may be out of wack.
    Also the bolts won't be in the way of the cable. BTW reversing the winch can be done but you shouldn't. Keeping the cable centered to the winch is best. Going over the top will pull up on the back bolt more. It is best to keep the pulling force level/in line with the bolts.
    Added benefit is that you can use the winch in other places making it way more useful in different locations. Get the most bang for you buck.
    Last thing. Add Anderson Plugs between battery & controls and between controls & winch. Link 3. These thing are fucking awesome! This will make it so you don't have to leave the controls and battery on the floor all the time. (Acceptable to falling things.) Adding Anderson Plugs to (in between charger cables and clamps) your charged will make it easier to charge and make a good connection to battery. It also will make moving winch from location to location MUCH easier. You can also add extensions. You can have the battery in the bed of a truck and the winch on a trailer. You need two for every connection. So you will need at least 4 for just this. Yes they are an added cost but the first time you need to do any maintenance to it or charge it you will be glad you put them in.
    I have my trailer set up like this very way. Can't see winch in video but the point is it's there LOL. Link 4. I move this winch from trailer to trailer. I had a receiver plate on my garage floor like you (no longer live there) and would pull in cars just like you.
    Ok now last thing LOL. If you winch ever breaks down or you forgot to charge the battery, you can always take the winch out, put a regular draw bar with a hook or shackle, run a rope from car being pulled in to Snatch block , back under car to another car, and pull that sucker in. Just make sure to put some stop blocks.

    Nice job tho.

      Should definitely be plenty! I was looking into what anchors can support and I know I did rate these appropriately, though I can't recall exact specs. Since most of the load is lateral, it would have to pretty much sheer the bolts to come out, and I definitely don't think that will happen. If I had space for 4 though, I would have used 4 as well. And in between the 2 bars i welded about 1 1/2 inche bars to hold the 2 together and the bottom of the 12 inch bars i made openings to install the bolts to hold the winch. And its bracke in place.. @Wingnut_Stickman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    if you are worried about the cable snapping toss a blanket or a coat over it and if it snaps, the blanket will absorb the shock. I am not making this up. About capacity -- some winches are rated based on the use of a snatch block, but that is probably not the case here. Something you might like to know about physics, 2500 lbs of pull is enough tug to reel in a car that weighs about 10x that number. Put another way, a 4000 lb car only requires about 400 pounds of pull to roll it over level ground, and as long as the tires are aired up and the brakes are not seized on, you are still in line with the 10% estimate. You have probably noticed you can push a car using your own strength, you never thought you were exerting a force comparable to the weight of the car, right?

I wanted to install a quick connect at the winch and then install the relay inside my expedition in the back. I would just open the door and connect the plug and use it that way. Just not sure what size wire I also needed to pick up to extend the quick connect with. In also not sure which one to buy either the 2500 or 3500. I need to dolly a 1999 yukon up onto the dolly and not sure if the 2500 will be enough. Thanks for any information.

    • @802Garage

      If I had to guess I would say they are 8 gauge and cheap. Nothing beefy. Could definitely be upgraded. Will be cheap to wire it either way. The 2500 would probably pull the Yukon, but if you can afford it I would definitely recommend stepping it up to the 3500.

    Hey my friend I am planning to buy a little winch like that for beekeeping purposes to lift boxes. I was worried a lot about how long my battery would last by keeping using this thing in the field. Do you know how long this battery would keep this thing running?

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I tried to look up some figures and do some basic math. If you have a pretty typical car battery like 650 CCA it will likely have a minimum reserve capacity of 125 to 150 minutes at 25A. I believe this winch probably draws 125 to 150 Amps when heavily loaded. If we assume a 125A draw and that's 5X the reserve capacity draw rating, 1/5 of a 125 minute reserve capacity would be 25 minutes of continuous use at max load. That said, the duty cycle of this particular winch is only 5% so you are supposed to use it for 45 seconds and then let it rest for 14 minutes and 15 seconds. Obviously, you can exceed this, especially when not pulling a heavy load. It's just recommended for maximum longevity. So if you are not maxing out the winch and you are letting it rest regularly, I see no reason you shouldn't get at least 30 minutes of actual pull time and possibly up to a few hours. This is all just some napkin math if you will and I could be totally off. In my experience, pulling a car for a few minutes barely drains the battery.

      @@802Garage Wow I wasn't expecting such great explanation. I suck at all electricity stuff so your comment really helps me figure it out a bit! I'm only going to use it for like 1 or 2 minutes at a time and the weight load is very low compared to a car. Weight would be around 200 to 400 pounds big max from each pull... so it would be a very easy job for the winch. Thank you so much for sharing this piece of information with me so quickly! Might want to do some winch research to see what the minimum rating for a given angle and weight is. Generally if it's a slight incline I think you would be fine. My driveway is very slightly sloped too. If it's a steep grade, you might want to at least step up the winch rating to 2500lbs, but I'm just guessing. Winch ratings are strange.

    That 2500lb is just in/on the first full wrap of that spool. Each time the wire wraps over itself the pulling forces decreases. And no, that rating is at a flat or level pull. The weight of the object being pulled is not the only consideration. You can pull that 1500 lb car OK but if the breaks are on, the pulling force it take to move that car just doubled. Again it is always best to have as much of the cable out and to use a snatch block to double back the cable to the winch. It makes that winch work a hole lot less. If you can get a second snatch block and go back to the object being pulled. You will have a 3 to 1 advantage. Will extend the life of that winch. Yes it will pull three times slower but that can be a good thing.

    The "putting ground in last" rule is only relevant in cars, where you don't want to short your hot wire on the body/frame of the car, where it's grounded.

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage  29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hahaha ya know fair! Habit. It's my experience, though I could be wrong, that you also get less sparking connecting ground last if something is active. Could be a false observation, but I make it a habit with electronics in general, since if you are working in anything with a grounded frame or board, the chance of shorting is still there. But point taken!

    So does that mean you have to disconnect it every time each use to the battery doesn’t die or how do you keep it from dying?

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage  ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as the winch isn't being used it shouldn't really drain the battery, at least not at any significant rate. The remote turns off automatically. I disconnect mine just to be safe though. You could just buy some quick disconnects for the battery or cables and then it takes literally 10 seconds to hook it up anyways.

      Can either buy the terminals that quick disconnect from the battery or buy a harness connector like that which is polarized and disconnect the wires in the middle. I'd probably go with the battery terminals since the ring connectors on the winch will bolt to them easy and you can always use them on a car later too.

      I would have liked to, but any 120V winches are way more expensive or would be much more difficult to set up. You could get a 120V to 12V converter to power this. Using a battery just seemed like the easy solution.

      TBH I've just used whichever old car battery I have laying around. Any battery that was for a car will be more than enough to power this winch. I'm not sure what the technical minimum specs are, but even an ATV battery will work.

      @@breukelenmanufactured1416 Checked the owners manual and it says minimum 12Ah for a battery and that max Amp draw is 132. So anything over those ratings you should be fine. I'd double them at least just to be safe. :D

    Good plan bud. I will give you one tip from experience, never store your car batteries directly on a concrete floor. They will lose their charge very quickly. I store mine on top of some 2 X 4's just so they're off the ground.

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I appreciate it, but I have to say that's not true. It's old info from when batteries were designed much differently. I have 8 batteries sitting directly on cement, 2-6 years old, and all of them will hold a charge for months. Even in the cold and even when it's damp.
      Granted some of them don't hold a charge very well as it is, but even those don't discharge fast. The one I used in this video for example has never discharged since I bought it.
      Hope you know I'm not trying to argue and I believed the same thing until just a few years ago. Thanks again!

    and no 5, because it's safer. If you're trying to push the car that means one hand on the steering wheel and halfway inside the vehicle and if it rolls well thats like russian roulette , you might be fine and you might get killed or injured. Plus if the car starts rolling towards the public road it might not only be yourself to concider,
