Hello Jarrod, you are in this video Edit: I’m the questioner from this video:th-cam.com/video/YtD3f7yPdcQ/w-d-xo.html Third comment down. Second Edit: Well Jarrod replied to it.
I found out about your channel a few days ago when someone mentioned on the linux subreddit that you would include compatibility on your future reviews, I love your content and I am really excited for that
Also compare running linux in a vm vs bare metal please. I want to know if craig federighi's claims about hypervisors are true on macos. Macs are basically the default dev laptop in the US from what I can tell.
I'd love to see, for example Dell with Ubuntu (like XPS 9310 or Precision 5550) vs System76 (Lemur Pro 14" with POPos or Ubuntu). Or even the same models like XPS 9310 on Windows vs Ubuntu (How is it with heat management, memory, etc.) - I know that Dell now offers smaller RAM for Ubuntu preinstalled Laptops (in XPS models). But no info why. Also, I have no idea why would I need 4K screen in a 13-14" laptops. For me, it's just smells like a bad battery management and miserable added value. Because in the end - even with 4K in 14" screen, I need to have bigger zoom or 1920 x 1080. But battery consumption is affected.
Yes please. Include Linux compatibility with a mention of kernel that are being used. Fedora is much advanced in kernel than UB... You are the only channel which include programming in your test suite.. really appreciated....
I greatly appreciate the coverage Josh! Had recently seen the other two videos and knew the third would be out soon. Keep up the high quality, and I am no doubt looking forward to Linux compatibility as a metric. I've resorted to VMWare only so I don't need to worry about driver compatibility.
Yesssss!!! Linux support information! Josh you were already my best and favorite channel find of the entire year, Linux info would be amazing! Thank you!!
Would love to see Linux included 😍. And that too fedora . 😍😍.You're the best for laptop suggestion . I just wish my country had more options at decent prices.
@@AlexiaAllen84 no thermal issues. My dad got a Macbook Pro 13 and that gets hotter than this laptop. Obviously, if I perform some intensive task, then it does get hot, but it still hasn't reached 'too hot to touch' temperatures yet.
Nice work Josh. I just last week started using my brand new 3910 (16gb ram, i7, 512,1080). I have your excellent reviews to thank for convincing me that the xps was the right machine for me. I'm absolutely and completely satisfied with my 3910!
You know these videos are good when you feel sad that's the end of the laptop buying guide. You've become my favorite laptop reviewer, Josh. You're very thorough in your reviews, while also keeping them entertaining to watch. You try to include aspects that many reviewers fail or don't bother to mention. And I love that you mention to whom these laptops are best suited for. The fact that no razer product was included in your recommendations, even though many act like it's the best thing since sliced bread, says enough about your approach towards practicality. I'm looking forward to your future videos. Keep up the great work and please do discuss Linux compatability, as it's commonly overlooked in laptop reviews.
Your content just keeps getting better. Not all the theatre and benchmarks that bloats TH-cam. You really seem to care about your viewers as most other reviewers seem to focus more on making it about them and clicks. Great work as always.
I watch your content for fun. I own a laptop and desktop and don't plan on buying a laptop anytime soon. I share your laptop reviews when my friends ask me for laptop suggestions. Keep it up!
Have you considered looking at/reviewing the LG Gram's? I just picked up a 14 inch one on sale for $799 to use for college and I am loving it. It may not be the ultimate performer (I believe it's rather average), but the weight, display, battery life, SSD speed, and build quality make up for it in my opinion, especially from a college user who isn't running heavy programs.
Couldn't recommend it highly enough, especially with that signature thinkpad keyboard. Make sure dual channel RAM (8+8 or 16+16) is used and RAM/NVME SSD storage is user replaced. 400 nit display is great for color accuracy (panel model N140HCG-GQ2 is desired) and response time is good enough for normal usage. That AMD 4750U is amazing and is worth the price alone. Be sure to hunt around for great deals/discounts during the weekday along with promo codes. P.S. linux compatibility is great as the audio interface is the only gotcha as you'll need open source audio firmware and audio source is configured according to www.ctrl.blog/entry/lenovo-thinkpad-t14-fedora.html
Dell released a statement shortly after the release of the XPS17 stating that they fixed the issue of the battery excessively discharging while plugged in. Just wanted to clarify, did your unit still do this even after the supposed fix?
Great Video-series, keep it up! the amount of information per minute is so big and also the specific advise for different use cases is awesome! really appreciate your videos!
Finally, Linux compatibility!=) But I already ordered ThinkPad T14s Ryzen 7 pro + 32 Gb RAM + 1Tb ssd, as it is fully compatible with Ubuntu and Fedora (as it's said on a numbers of forums) to replace my current Macbook pro 15" 2019
Great recommendations, Josh! I would love it if you include Linux compatibility. Preferably make sure to mention if you need anything extra than a vanilla distro. For example, some laptops come preinstalled with Ubuntu and almost everything works great(most often the fingerprint reader is the one that doesn't work) but if you install Arch linux or Fedora more things stop working properly. That is usually because the preinstalled distro has extra drivers not included in the mainline kernel.
As someone who bought the Spectre 14 when it was $1,299, I can tell you that it's the real deal, at least so far. Build quality is excellent, the OLED screen is gorgeous, it runs cool and quiet during normal tasks, and it feels more responsive than the 2020 Razer Blade I returned. The only downside I've seen to this point is that, even with the system in Performance mode, it waits until the absolute last possible moment to ramp up the fans under load, so CPU temperatures will get over 90C and clock speeds will throttle down to around 2.8 GHz. Once the fans get going, temperatures stabilize below 85C, with clocks hovering around 3.3-3.5 GHz. Even then, the machine is remarkably quiet.
Great review. I recently just bought an dell xsp 15, the specs are great and instantly fell in love with the display. But I've been hearing a few negative reviews such as the screen glitching, freezing and thermal issues. How has your experience been? Do you think I should be concerned about these issues and return the laptop?
Great review as always Josh. As the HP Spectre X360 14” doesn’t come out in Europe until January and my son needs a creator laptop for his studies now, I just bought him the Dell Inspiron 7000 15” 2in1 Black Edition with the 11th gen CPU and the Iris Xe Max dGPU, 16GB RAM, 1TB storage, 4K screen, full sized SD card reader and that neat onboard pen garage plus all the Intel Evo refinements and hardware integration. Punches above it’s weight in terms of performance and as a good an all rounder as the HP Envy 15 but cheaper (if less powerful) and a much, much better screen than the disappointing display in the Envy X360 15”. You should,do a review of the Dell especially as, thanks to you, we dodged a bullet on the 14” Inspiron with the tall aspect ratio screen. 🙏🏽👍🏽💪🏽👏🏽
im also thinking to buy that Inspirion 7000 13 2in1 black edition, as it is much cheaper than the xps 13 2 in 1 or spectre x360 but has literally the same specs, and looks also quite nice :)
@@AyoHues do you know if theres a non 4k version of the black edition? Because i think it´s useless to have a 4k Panel on a 13 inch laptop xD, didn´t find one

Hey, I love this video idk where its been this whole time!!! ive been doing so much research for the past 3 weeks and i still dont know what to get! I am looking for a powerful mobile work station with a great screen with touch option. I am looking at the Zbook Studio G7 15.6 inch. what do you think Josh? and if you like this selection what specs should i get with it?
Thank you Josh for the detailed buying guide and all the effort you put into making these videos! I'm not very smart when it comes to tech stuff but you really help people with different needs. I'm currently looking at a Legion 5 and hoping it won't sell out on Black Friday.
Even though I'd made up my mind to get the omen long before this video series came out, I still watched all three parts of it. Welp, I think I'm addicted 😭
Man I would love to see Fedora/Linux compatibility! I am running Fedora myself (on a Precision 5750) and absolutely love it. Btw. about the XPS 17 power problems: If you restrict CPU or GPU a bit you stay below the 130W it is def. possible. And then you still have a 30W more power budget than the Macbook Pro 16". When I game I just disable boost but I can also stress the CPU and train a neural net at the same time without the battery draining. I think what you observed is most likely that the first models (like mine) did not even get 130W from the notebook but onlu 100W, so they were constantly over power budget. They still can drain ("hybrid power") but if you adjust your settings a bit, that is not an issue. I love the build quality and screen for coding quite a lot. Although the QC issues is what will make me most likely abandon this if my incoming replacement has issues again. Great video!
Between the XPS with the new processor and the Lenovo X1 Carbon with the old... which would you go with? Using it as an all rounder but with heavy excel use also a bit of R and Python here and there.
I’m getting the HP ENVY 13-ba0512sa for €1259. It has the following features. 1TB Storage 16GB RAM Intel i7 Nvidia GeForce MX350 Graphics Card Touchscreen Backlit Keyboard Should I go for this one?
I love these reviews, and the level of detail. Really top level reviewing. I just wish presentation wise you'd slow down a bit, as at times, eg when you're rattling off the spec, it gets so quick it's garbled.
Looking forward to your comparision video of the spectre, dell and macbook! When is it coming out? I really need a new laptop soon but I will wait for this video before taking a decision :)
After I found out about your channel, this has been my goto place to get a feel of a new laptop I'm planning to purchase this black friday so I really appreciate your content. After watching many laptop reviews you've done, I've decided to go with Dell XPS 15 for my next laptop. One question for you thoughis , as a software developer, do you believe it's worth to purchase Dell XPS 15 i7-10875H version over i7-10700H?
Machine learning related coding, especially those who need CUDA, can rarely be satisfied by any laptop. I'm doing machine learning coding on Computer Vision. I run my code on a server with 4 or 8 GPUs. Those GPUs are at least 1080ti or Titan XP. Some missions, such as video related matching learning, often need Quadro RTX 8000 which has 48G memory. I don't recommend buying buffed-up laptops for machine learning. Laptops that can support common coding tools, like vscode, pycharm, is sufficient, since you will run your code on a server anyway.
Doing a word processing job, like coding or writing, actually needs a high-resolution display more than gaming even video editing. Reading on a higher resolution display puts less pressure on your eyes. It more feels like reading on printed paper.
The HP envy and spectre line are great, it’s rough having to decide as my old hp is really showing it’s age, and really lags when I want to do some causal Apex gaming on the weekends. Thx for the tips!
Please please please add Linux compatibility into your reviews! As a software dev and an open source enthusiast, it's always a gamble when I get a new laptop. Please and thank you!
Hi Josh, I want to suggest another notebook category. A thin client one. I'm working on the remote machine which is placed in the office and the temperatures and noise are none of the conserns. What would you recommend having big very bright display quiet notebook with best keyboard and trackpad. Very good speakers would be nice. So basically even 4 core would possibly be enough.
I have just ordered my macbook pro 16 inch with core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, AMD Radeon Pro 5300M. I want it to last me through my data science undergrad and masters degree. What do you think Josh? Will it be good enough?
Hey Josh, not sure if you'll see this, but if you haven't thought about it, can u take into account whether or not 16gb makes a difference on the mbp13? I saw a video where it really doesn't make a difference so I wanna know if it would, especially when it comes to programming as a CS student. Thanks!
I would LOVE to see the Linux compatibility. I'm torn between a Dell XPS 13, Lenovo X1 Carbon, and a System 76 Laptop. I'd prefer the Dell but I'm worried that there'll be some weird bugs that come with running Linux. System 76 laptops run Linux perfectly (apparently) but are rebranded Clevo laptops so I'm not quite sure about the build quality. I don't get the ability to return my laptop if I find a bug on it and it might even void my warranty so I'm paralysed by indecision. It would be greatly appreciated if you talk a little about Linux compatibility - I certainly know I would benefit from it on my laptop buying journey!

What would you recommend having big very bright display quiet notebook with best keyboard and trackpad. Very good speakers would be nice.
So basically even 4 core would possibly be enough.
Great vid Josh!
I have just ordered my macbook pro 16 inch with core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, AMD Radeon Pro 5300M. I want it to last me through my data science undergrad and masters degree. What do you think Josh? Will it be good enough?
1 thumbs up for adding Linux testing on those laptops 👍
Linux compatibility analysis would be great Josh, thank you.
Yes please, for the linux compatibility tests in the future
Is it good choice to buy MBP M1 chip
My purpose is for office use and installation of softwares like programming ?
I actually logged on tonight JUST to recommend (request) you run speed tests in Linux! :D
Hey Josh what about the new M1 MacBook Air and Pro? When will you make a review?
