A lure design that is unique here in the states pretty much needs a provisional, a design, and a utility patent to keep these big, or smaller companies from copying. Like how zman protects the chatterbait direct connection. There is a right way, and we as lure makers need to figure it out.

Yep I agree with that. My only opinion on that is it’s easier for a company to take what wrong with the original design and improve upon it. Like I said in the video I do t have my hands on the Berkley version yet but it wouldn’t surprise me if they improved upon the Orginal design then charge 80% less per bait seems wrong to me
I like where you are going with this . Berkley does this and so so almost all the large and mid size companies. Just look at the brushog. Every company has one. I could go all day on this about copy catting each other. My one question is are they giving the other company royalty like they did with the trashfish?
U wasn't kidding grow design definitely makes better baits an didn't know berkley getting like other companies but hey its America what we do best. Definitely going to be getting a grow design lures thanks for spreading the awareness about hard work an tight lines

Well swimbait companies should stop selling outrageously expensive swim baits Im going with a cheaper knock off I got groceries to buy and bills to pay they’ll be alright.
It won’t hurt them man this is not a big issue…. Look at all the rod and reel companies. They have a cult following always sold out and overpriced on eBay. Berkeley made a model to get in the hand of the average joe or young angler who can’t afford that kind of money. It’s things like this that kill the industry why tell people to boycott something because it look the same. Everybody eating I’m glad someone actually making things affordable for your everyday people who can’t afford it. The goal is to get everyone fishing so why does something like this matter!!! Use your platform to to inform properly. We don’t know if they licensed the tech or design or what? If what saying is the right way then there should be only one rod and reel company??? Tackle shops would be extinct, etc.
I agree with you to an extent. Unfortunately are view point is on two different sides. I for one will be purchasing the grow designs version. I use my platform to inform my following what I’ll be doing. That is all. It’s still a free country for now. So do you. 😂🤙
Great video once again, bro. I met Benno from Little Creeper years ago long before the Berkley copy came out and the OG Trash Fish are still the bomb. I guarantee that I won't be carrrying these new baits in my shop and if I can get on with Grow Designs I will!
This is not the first time this happened in the tackle world. Especially the growing Big Swimbait world. Small (usually part tie) companies hand build baits on a limited scale. They put up a "drop" and are sold out in minutes. Usually by greedy folks who buy them just to resell at ridiculous prices. But if you want that bait, you pretty much have no choice and have to pay the premium. From what I understand, these Grow "Flags" have not been available retail for years. And $100 on Ebay is just silly. If you ask me, it's Grows' fault for mis-managing their business.
I couldn't imagine how few options we would have to fish with if no company ever imitated another company's design... How many companies sell a.. ..squarebill? ..football jig? ..curly tail grub? ..double willow spinner bait? ..paddle tail swimbait? ..soft jerkbait? ..hard jerkbait? ..etc
That Havoc line Berkley put out the sick fish in and other lures jump started all the copy catting! The pit boss came out of that line and it’s not extremely innovative but it’s original and it’s the most versatile beaver styled bait by far in my opinion.
How many times has the vision 110 been copied and yet it still sells like WILD? It sells because of the performance and build quality. Hopefully Grow Designs can keep the quality way up there. If they do they wont have to worry about anything.
Awesome. Id love to get my hands on some of those was castiac’s joint made with the same mesh material? Because that to me is really the best part about the bait. It makes it very durable. Berkley copied that part 😅
@@livefastmovementoutdoors8310 not sure how they made it. It was a double joint and the harness would eventually rip out. I think you can still run into them occasionally.
I am pretty confident in saying Berkely doesn't and probably has never had an original/innovative idea in their product line history. They are the biggest copy cat in the industry... and every one knows it as well. Which also strikes me as odd that people would even have any feelings about it. That all being said, if berkely managed to get the same action as the other lure, then yes, people will buy the Berkely lure over the more expensive hard to get lure. There will always be the swimbait fanatics that buy and wait in line for the hard to get expensive bait... probably not going to hurt the original maker.
Yep I agree. I make a few points on price in this video just to raise the question. Just doing my part in supporting a company that I think will make more innovative baits in the future🤙
Everyone makes a crank bait, bladed jig, creature bait or any other bait on the market. They all copy each other and if another company can make it affordable for us average joes.
This isn’t anywhere near new news. I’ve told this story before… my first ICAST I witnessed 3 fist fight over stolen designs, grown men in business suits on the ground, throwing kicks and punches at each other. That was over 15 Years ago. SPRO with help from a lure designer strait up stole from Jerry Rago copying the Tool. Berkeley is the biggest thief, they will steal or FORCE you in to cooperation by threatening to copy it anyway. My question? What incentive do they have to stop? The answer is zero…from the trash fish to Basstrix to the whopper plopper to now this bait. This is the nature of this beast. It has and always will be this way. Waits a bit, see what they steal next. This should be a stern warning to all original bait designers and makers. If you create it, it will be stolen. This industry punishes originality, creativity, hours and hours of one persons hard work only to crapped on my a bigger company with deep pockets and good lawyers. Again, what incentive do those companies have to stop stealing from the little guy.
Berkley has a product out that looks just like the trash fish too! Not sure about material and feel, but the overall profile and design looks pretty similar.
that is how business works. They should have patented and protected their designs. Its no secret the bait industry is full of copy cats, not a new thing at all. Fishing is expensive as it is. If Berkley can save me some cash and make a good bait, I am all for it.
@@hytekrednekbama4400 tell me you know nothing of business or business ethics. 😂 it can be patented in japan but the US patent system doesn’t apply to other country’s 😂
@@hytekrednekbama4400 for example all the cheap shit you buy off Amazon. 😂 doesn’t matter anyways cause the flag has a 10x better hook up ratio then the Nessie so be my guest😂
The question is, is it legal? Did they make a version of their own? I hadn’t heard of the grow designs glidebait. So, when I heard about the Berkeley one, I thought about how someone finally put one out. The use of mesh in a soft bait is not unique. You call it a copy. Do you know that they did not do their own R&D to make the lure type their own? Frankly, I’m okay with it. We all don’t drive Fords though they made the first car. In fishing, the chatterbait is an example. It had it’s time (including legally challenging copiers) where they cornered the market and they used it wisely to create products that created a loyal user base, myself included. Now, you have slobber knockers and thunder crickets. So what? Now, z-man has to compete to maintain its edge; it drives down the price while at the same time delivering better and better products, a win for the consumer.
Innovation within our industry will continue to decline for as long as Berkley is allowed to copy baits. I personally don’t think It will stop unless a large number of anglers stop purchasing from them. My money goes to the companies in which it will be used for R&D it’s like an investment. Yeah technically it’s legal because grow designs is a Japanese company but doesn’t make it right.
Thank you, you hit it right on the head. I enjoy the passion people have for their activities but along with passion comes opinions, which everyone has one. I don't much agree with his take on this. Copying Ideas is a daily thing in the retail market but that's just it, a copy. If you look at both of these baits they are similar, not exact! The grow designs product is far superior quality than the Berkley swimbait. I applaud Berkley for doing what they can to help more fisherman catch fish that can't afford to pay $100 for a swimbait. That's not the market Berkley is trying to reach. These guys that can afford to throw $100+ swimbaits probably do so on $600+ combos! This is exactly why companies like Berkley are not going to affect the higher priced manufactures. Take Audi for example, The lead design engineer left Audi years ago and went to Kia. Kia now designs their vehicles with a lot of Audi's looks and sudo comforts. It happens. Now people can have a nice car at the fraction of the price and the group of those that can afford an Audi still buy Audi. No difference in the fishing industries. And I don't know about you but I would rather buy American made when I can afford it. Just saying
It all started when it became an industry. Just like life when you have an unbelievable number of people obsessed with fishing, like myself, you're gonna have drama
Thx I was in the dark about the nessie. Didn’t know it was a knockoff but the way it moved in the water peaked my interest but won’t buy one now. Thx again.
So I guess strike king is the only company that can make square bills and it’s wrong if 6th since decides to make a crank bait 😂cmon man who cares what brand if it works for you
The Twitcher. Yeah that to me is wrong as well . But one it didn’t win any awards nor is it getting publicity. Two it’s not priced way below like the Berkley bait is.
The award was voted on by the industry so it means nothing and as far as price goes thats purely on the manufacturer. Catch some toads at clear lake. Hope the frog bite is picking up.
Well understood! It is sad to see this big companies (pure fishing, do outdoors, house of outdoors, etc) carpetbag the design innovation of these design smaller companies. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
I guess many of you forgot that these baitcasters we all use today was invented by George Snyder of Paris, Ky. in 1810. He didn't apply for a patent of trademark so everyone copied it... It's been going for 200 years.
if it is not the same then it's all fair in love and war . the higher price does not set right with all of us . This B/S of over pricing in this industry is all over and is out of control . Your seeing the exact same thing as wal mart has been doing for ever . If it covers the rules of patent it is ok and will not be stopped
I understand the frustration, but if the design was patented like the chatterbait or something there wouldnt be a copy. So many people have tried to copy the chatterbait but they have to make design changes before it can be released. Those other companies' chatterbaits that look the same are licensed. Huddleston boot tail is another example. I know applying for protections is expensive, but not applying and then whining when your intellectual property is stolen is a bit childish/naïve. I for one still like the Japanese original and would support them, but I think this isn't really a bad thing for the average Joe.
If we looked closely, how many variations are there of the spook? Not saying I agree, but copying baits has been going on for several decades. Especially major corporations. Major corporations are under corporate pressure to hit their numbers. They are going to continue to do it because the fisherman looks to save money when making purchases. The bad thing is the little guys cannot match the margins of the copies made by major tackle companies. Just like buying at Sam's, mass production simply lowers the price tag and the target demographic for fishermen certainly includes the lower-income anglers.
I really don’t understand the fuss between these two companies, and I don’t understand what makes the Berkly brand have such a negative reputation when they are just experimenting with different designs! The only two things I can understand about the madness, first is that berkly could have violated the patent from the grow design works company, second is these similar lure designs that have been stolen from other fishing companies aren’t as high tech or realistic as the original designs
Zach-I totally support your position on this issue- you will find zero to no Berkly baits in my tacklebox!! Thanks for speaking up for the smaller, trying harder businesses !!
This is nothing new. It's happened for over 50 years. Take the Creme worm. I don't see the outrage at Zoom, Robo worm or any of the other 10,000 other worm makers who outright just ripped that design off to make their own versions. You want to support the small designer? Buy his baits but if you can't get them and someone fills that need don't get mad. Supply and demand.
I see lots of copying going on among everyone. I have a real basic understanding of patent law. Tell me, are patent laws international? It appears that Grow Design is from Japan. Is a patent in Japan valid and enforceable in the USA? Is a USA patent enforceable in Japan, Taiwan or China? We live in a real small world now. I can order lures from Japan and Fed Ex will have them at my front door in 2-3 days. I agree, We all should recognize the copies and spend our money with the true innovators.
Berkley paid alot of money to make their version of the trash fish, I wonder if they did the same with this new swimbait or did they have to because that company is not in the USA.
From my understanding they did not. But I tend to focus on things I can control and what I know is that I’ll be buying the grow designs version so the money pay. Potentially goes to R&D and more innovation within in the industry
I would say why the rage? When the item is outright copy and is cheap usually meant there are flaw. It will not provide 100% identical action nor performance of the original. Take airpods for example. There are many copies out there available, but is Apple taking action over them? No, because it serve as an free advertisement to the original. Hence most of the user of copy tend to get airpods by the end of the day. Sames goes to Duo Spearhead Ryuki lineup and DUO Jerkbait lineup, many do outright copy, but in the end people still going back the original because there are something original excel the copy.
Idk anything about this situation but isn't this why patent laws exist? They came out with the design made that money initially and then when a patent expires it's fair game?
Patent Lawyers are expensive, defending that patent is even more so. Small guys don’t have deep pockets but Berkeley does. It’s easier and cheaper to steal than it is to create
The thing is if it's not available and someone else has it readily available what are you going to do? It's called capitalism and every industry has 'copied' and/or improved on an already made design and that's what we call progression and competition, it drives industries. Reality >Feelings
Haha 😂 I feel like you interpreted this wrong. I lack empathy and actually have zero feelings on the subject. Reality for me is I’ll be spending my money on the designers bait. You feel free to spend yours where you see fit. 😂👍
@@livefastmovementoutdoors8310 LoL you made a video about not liking that people 'copy' designs so you definitely have feelings about it 🤣 The beauty is you can spend your money where you want just like everyone else, I'll spend mine where they have the product in stock it doesn't bother me at all
I actually own one. It’s sub par compared and it’s equally as hard to get. Like I said copying it is one thing but making it more readily available and pricing it down 80% is in exceptable
Hey, if I am not mistaken, didn't Paul Bailey help design the Flag? I believe he first introduced it to me last year during a guided trip. I remember him talking about how it was the first of its kind, being a soft jointed swimbait.
If you haven't touched the other one/Berkeley then how do you know its exactly same? Also JDM lures and reels are insane! So if its a Chinese,Japanese Thailand product we should have a version. Yes if its an Exact replica then thats a Lawsuit. And Wrong. And some baits cant help but almost duplicate them. Bet your friends with Ben Milliken and think Googan is trash?
Guys in groups selling swim and glide baits way over priced of course people are going to go for the cheaper versions and guys online only do drops not often enough
Haha 😂 I may look young. Thank you for that. I agree with you it has been happening for generations. For me this video was just to raise awareness and to advertise to the people who trust me and my opinion. That I’ll be sticking with the grow designs version. Enjoy your Berkley products. 👍
@@livefastmovementoutdoors8310 not saying I’m a buyer of the Nessie. I have no interest at this point. I did go to the website link you provided though and there is zero baits available.
Sadly it will continue to happen, just like it always has. Half of the stuff out there is a knockoff, wether it’s an almost identical copy, or just slightly revised. In no way do I agree with it, but I just don’t see it stopping. I agree with others, these giant companies should collab like Spro did, rather than just steal the design and rename it
So the "swimbait community is pissed off", ok well what about the senko community, what about the spinnerbait community, the list could go on and on, copying in the fishing bait industry has been going on for decades. Now that being said I don't think they should win awards for it, but the copying and knockoffs are never gonna stop.
Yep you’re right but with that being said. Many companies at least state it’s based on a similar design of another companies bait or so fourth. Berkley is known for outright copying and stealing baits which has made them a lot of there profit in the last 20 years
Bud look in your tackle box tray compartment or wherever you keep your tackle. There is no originals anymore and if so they are put up safe somewhere. Your going down a deep deep rabbit hole man. Ott's Garage didn't invent the crankbait right. I think Manns was one of first in plastic worm catergory and that's what it is now just catergories and regardless of which one there will always be one company taking off anotgher wether to improve or make less expensive right. I'm not against what your saying but what your saying pertains to almost all your baits/lures so in reality you'd have to go through all your tackle encouraging folks to either support or not support lol. I'm gonna go fishing cuz I'm to small to change the industries way of doing things plus I'd rather be fishing lol . Wish I could explain what I intended to a bit better but maybe it made some sense as to what I was trying to convey lol
Oh I know exactly where you’re coming from, you’re right but let me ask you this. Most of all those copies are priced similarly. How many copies have you seen in which they make a product that almost exactly the same as the Original and then charge a quarter of the price. Pretty much pricing the Original designer out of the market. That’s the only problem I have with the whole situation. I plan to purchase from grow designs because I want my money to go towards more innovation within our industry. Not just someone’s pocket
This is nothing new. Look at the sinkos, trick worms, brush hogs, rodents, spinner baits, I mean I can go on and on. I feel bad for the small guys who do it first but unfortunately it’s just business. The big guys with the most money are always going to copy something for cheaper and make a ton of money off of it but this is nothing new
I own baits from both companies. And I can say the nessie is the better choice even the grow design is the better bait. I had to wait 6 months for my baits to arrive in jersey by then it was ice on the water. If u watch shark tank they ask about production. And for the price u can buy 10 Nessies. E-bay prices r crazy. U snooze u lose. The fact that they can price gap it shows how much grow designs is ripping people off. Like Nikes made in the same factory as pro keds
People r tight bcuz Noobs and weekend warriors will b calling themselves swimbait fisherman and not have to break the bank on custom baits and catch giants
It is and the sport is only seeing new and innovative products coming out of Japan which only costs Americans more. If we devolved new and innovative products here we wouldn’t have to pay more. But we would rather just copy it 😂

@@livefastmovementoutdoors8310 surely you jest, especially based on this video you produced 🤣😂🤣 like I said, which you seem to disagree with, “You spend your money how you want and I’ll spend mine how I want” and frankly I’d say this is non negotiable. Wouldn’t you? 😁
All baits are copies of other baits. Bill Lewis invented the Rat-L-trap but I don't see everyone losing their minds over every single bait company making a lipless crank bait.
Yes and no. Most copies are similarly priced this copy will be largely discounted on the Berkley side. Which seems wrong. Imagine if you opened a business and then someone opened a business right across the street offering the same thing you do for a fraction of the price. It’s a better, cheaper, easier to get lure. I don’t understand the issue. It’s better for the fisherman. Which in turn is better for the sport. Which is better all the way around. They were over priced to start with. They had years of gouging. Now it’s time to come back to earth.

Love to hear it. Thanks for the support 🤙
They are 100 on Tackle Warehouse when in stock, that's retail for the 225
I couldn't imagine how few options we would have to fish with if no company ever imitated another company's design...
Put boss is the only Berkley bait I’ll fish
How many times has the vision 110 been copied and yet it still sells like WILD? It sells because of the performance and build quality. Hopefully Grow Designs can keep the quality way up there. If they do they wont have to worry about anything.
Yep my thoughts exactly. Thank you for watching
Castiac had the first soft glide with that joint. Grow design was not first. I have a box full of them.

Support the small guy always!!!
The great chef creates, the genius copies, it’s a fact of life..
Everyone makes a crank bait, bladed jig, creature bait or any other bait on the market. They all copy each other and if another company can make it affordable for us average joes.
Technically Zman holds the patent maybe in the US market for the chatterbait blade. Or at least the did for a long time.
Well said! Couldn’t agree more. It only stops when people stop buying there garbage. But even then it’s a company with deep pockets
Berkley has a product out that looks just like the trash fish too! Not sure about material and feel, but the overall profile and design looks pretty similar.
Yep they’ve been doing it for awhile
Googan rips off everything in the fishing isle. Nobody says a thing! Lol. Glad you brought this up
Yeah it’s industry wide now and very frustrating
that is how business works.

What's the brand or where did you get that pop-up cover you are sitting under with your boat??
Not sure but I purchased it from Costco. Works really good

I saw your message on my website I’ll shoot you an email. 👍
What about the megabass soft glide bait? Not sure single mention of it in the discussion.
Hmm, kind of like the Berkley Chopo and the whopper Plopper.
Haha 😂 yep
@livefastmovementoutdoors8310 don't forget the agent e they ripped off of megabass
Well understood! It is sad to see this big companies (pure fishing, do outdoors, house of outdoors, etc) carpetbag the design innovation of these design smaller companies. 👏🏿👏🏿🎣
I agree. The only thing we can do is purchase the orginal design.
Amen brother !!
I guess many of you forgot that these baitcasters we all use today was invented by George Snyder of Paris, Ky. in 1810. He didn't apply for a patent of trademark so everyone copied it... It's been going for 200 years.
Do you mind sharing what brand boat cover you have
This one is from Costco. I believe they just call them Gardesol carport
if it is not the same then it's all fair in love and war . the higher price does not set right with all of us .
I pick up what you’re putting down. Thanks for your input. I’ll be buying the Japanese version as well
If we looked closely, how many variations are there of the spook? Not saying I agree, but copying baits has been going on for several decades. Especially major corporations. Major corporations are under corporate pressure to hit their numbers. They are going to continue to do it because the fisherman looks to save money when making purchases. The bad thing is the little guys cannot match the margins of the copies made by major tackle companies. Just like buying at Sam's, mass production simply lowers the price tag and the target demographic for fishermen certainly includes the lower-income anglers.
Yep. I agree. I will be doing my part in purchasing from Grow Designs and not Berkley 🤙
I always get originals they are usually the same price like the plopped and chopo or whatever
Dig further back and you will see the problem with Berkely and the fishing industry as a whole when it comes to design and Orginal ideas
Yep my money will be going to a company that will use it for more innovation within the industry. 🤷♂️

Well said. I wish I could answer those questions. I’ll be doing the same
Berkley paid alot of money to make their version of the trash fish, I wonder if they did the same with this new swimbait or did they have to because that company is not in the USA.

I own baits from both companies. And I can say the nessie is the better choice even the grow design is the better bait.
