    Hi Melissa, your video is pure gold! Thanks for all the information. I use eucerin face soap and it really works for me and now I want to add retinol to my night routine but my skin is oily and pro acne so I'm not sure what could I use after the retinol. Hey! :)
      What Retinol product do you use?
      You do not have to follow with a moisturizer afterwards, unless you're experiencing dryness. Still, if you have oily skin, I suggest using a hydrating toner or serum instead so that it does not feel too heavy on the skin yet hydrates :)

    Wow this is great thanks so much! its so hard to find good advice online! would it be too much to use: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser, then, The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner, then La Roche-Posay Retinol, then La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 ? Thank you so much for your help!! I'm clueless

    I started using retinol serum for more than a month now and my skin barrier got damaged. I will use the La Roche-Posay cicaplast baume.

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, if the retinol was the cause of the damage, then discontinuing its use should already help solve the problem. It's also crucial to avoid anything that can irritate your skin. For now, it's best to just cleanse your face wit a mild cleanser and minimize sun exposure. If you must be in the sun, make sure to use sun protection. Ideally, choose sunscreens with mineral filters, as they are less likely to irritate the skin.

      My routine
      [1st day]
      morning:
      step 1 = moisturizer
      step 2 = sunscreen
      evening:
      step 1 = I wash my face with a gentle cleanser
      step 2 = first I apply Vaseline around my mouth
      step 3 = moisturizer
      step 4 = retinol
      step 5 = moisturizer
      [2nd day]
      morning:
      same as the 1st day
      evening:
      step 1 = I wash my face with a gentle cleanser
      step 2 = I apply around my mouth vaseline
      step 3 = moisturizer
      step 4 = azelaic acid
      step 5 = moisturizer

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The reason for this is that retinol (or retinoid) not only affects the area where it is directly applied, but also the surrounding skin. Consequently, Vaseline is not effective and can often worsen the situation by trapping heat underneath, which intensifies irritation. The skin around the mouth and eyes is particularly sensitive, so avoiding these areas can help mitigate the irritation, or at least make it less noticeable.
      You could try the following routine:
      PM Routine:
      Wash your face with a gentle cleanser.
      Pat your face dry with a clean towel, then wait 5-10 minutes for the skin to fully dry.
      Apply retinoid, avoiding the eyelids, corners of the eyes, nose, and lips.
      Wait another 10-15 minutes before applying moisturizer.
      Make sure to choose one suitable for your concerns; often, a light gel-cream formulation works best alongside retinoids.
      You can follow the same guidelines for using Azelaic acid.

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no scientific evidence to suggest that skincare ingredients cause facial hair growth.
      Facial hair growth is primarily determined by genetics and hormone levels, particularly the male hormone testosterone. Skincare ingredients, when used as directed, should not have any impact on hormone levels or hair growth.
      However, some skincare products may contain ingredients that can cause skin irritation or inflammation, which could potentially affect the hair follicles in the skin. For example, overuse of certain exfoliants or abrasive scrubs could lead to irritation and inflammation, which may affect hair growth.

      Hey! 😊
      Yes, that's fine! However, I wouldn't use Cicaplast (or any moisturizer, in general) after your Retinol application. I've found that it's best to use your Retinol on its own, or when combined with HA and Niacinamide, use it as a last step without layering anything else on top. This way, your Retinol can do the proper cell turnover, and you're not sealing the dead skin cells in with your moisturizer. However, see what works best for you! 😊

      If you have sensitive skin or are prone to dryness, using a salicylic acid cleanser twice a day may be too much and could cause irritation or flakiness. In this case, you may want to use it once a day or every other day, and incorporate a gentle cleanser (hydrating or foaming) into your skincare routine.

    Hello Ms. Melissa! I just wanna ask something since i just started my first application of retinol tonight specifically the 0.1% retinol by Frankly a korean brand product. I didn't feel any irritation after application such as redness and itchiness which is surprising but i am hoping not to get purging. So here is the situation i did the sandwich method Moisturiser+Retinol+Moisturiser and I made sure that the first layer of moisturizer is dry before applying retinol like i waited 20mins above just to make sure my face is really dry. But after putting the first layer of moisturiser and drying it then when i apply the retinol cream it's kinda difficult to blend or scatter it to my whole face and I don't wanna apply too much since it's my first time using retinol. Should i still do the sandwich method or not?
    If not is this routine okay?
    Cleanser+Niacinamide w/HA Serum or Toner+Retinol+Moisturizer
    Anyway, thank you Ms. Melissa for your previous advice to me it really helps me a lot through my acne journey. Now my face is okay less oily and acne if i have acne it is really tiny unlike before that popping big. I am slowly gaining my confidence again. Now i am using retinol and I don't want to fail this one. I am using retinol not just to fully improve my acne problems but also to improve my skin texture since my acne leaves many marks and scars like moon crates to my face. I know i should consult a dermatologist but I don't have enough money to do that and for now i will do the best that i can to improve my face problems on my own.

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Ronald,
      The sandwich method is a technique that can be used to gradually introduce retinol, retinal or retinoids to the skin to minimize the risk of irritation. The idea is that the moisturizer acts as a buffer, helping to reduce the potential irritation caused by retinol/retinal/retinoids while still allowing it to be effective.
      Now for the retinol low-strength products with 0.2% or less are generally milder and are not a reason for concern.
      Generally, from my experience, that method is only necessary if you have extremely sensitive skin, but even then, you are better off using a less irritating retinoid. Apply it as I showed in this video, and depending on the retinol and your overall skin type, you do not need to use a moisturizer afterward. (test it)
      Retinol/Retinal/Retinoids can help fade acne marks, but the skin's natural healing process will gradually fade them over time as new skin cells replace the old ones. But also, acne marks are influenced by genetics to some extent.
      Purging:
      Retinol/Retinal/Retinoid can increase cell turnover, which means they can speed up the process of shedding dead skin cells and replacing them with new ones. When this happens, it can cause the skin to become congested and may result in an initial breakout, also known as purging.
      The initial breakout can occur because the increased cell turnover can bring pre-existing clogged pores to the surface, resulting in the appearance of more pimples or blackheads. However, this is a normal part of the process, and the purging typically goes away after a few weeks to a month.
      It's important to note that not everyone experiences purging, and the severity and duration of the purging can vary from person to person.
      And thank you 🙂

      @@Ugcwith_shivani The Ordinary Retinols have to be stored in the fridge; otherwise, they will lose their efficacy quickly, and this happens faster if it's hot in your area. What other Retinol products can you get?
      In general, Retinol/Retinoids and Vitamin C (especially Ascorbic Acid - pure Vitamin C) don't like heat and light.

    Is it okay if i use Cetaphil Gentle cleanser and Lotus sunscreen SPF 30 ?
    Or should I have to use Cetaphil moisturizing lotion??

    • @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
      @MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Generally, it should be enough; however, if your skin is very dry you may need to use the lotion. Still, a more moisturizing sunscreen without the lotion would layer much better if that is the case. Means overall, it depends on your skin type and personal preference 😉

      @@Assassin7112 You can apply your moisturizing lotion first (let it absorb into the skin) and then use your sunscreen on top :)

    soo dont we apply sunscreen in the evenings??

      No, since there's no sun, you only need it when there's sunlight to protect your skin :) So, essentially, just during the daytime.
