Hi to all three of you! ~waves~ Girls, when I was your age (the 1960s), this song was written and sung by two guys whose last names were Simon and Garfunkel. They were worried that people might not be talking, listening, caring, or paying attention to each other as much as they should, so they decided to make this song about it. They sang the whole song in a sad, quiet way. Then a few years ago this guy and his band, called Disturbed, sang and played it in a sad, quiet way at the start of the song but made themselves look and sound kind of angry at the end. They didn't do it to look scary; but to show you how upsetting it can be when people don't seem to care about each other. The video starts out with the guys finding abandoned musical instruments and playing them, hoping to get the attention of the people on the other side of that river -- people who aren't being very friendly with anyone. And hooray; at the end of the video you can see the guys and their musical instruments get on a boat and float across the river to meet the people on the other side!
Another singing group called Pentatonix sang this song a few years ago, too. They did it without using any musical instruments at all; just their voices and beat-boxing! They sang it in a strong and happier way, to let us know that it's never too late to make friends with people. In their official video they sing it in an old warehouse, which looks really cool, and I like it just as much as the Disturbed and Simon & Garfunkel versions. If you ever watch Simon & Garfunkel sing it, and then Pentatonix, I hope you'll like them, too!
