    When the original Simon & Garfunkel song came out in the mid '60s, the public loved the song and it was a big hit but the critics hated it. They were saying, "How dare this 19 yr old singer (Paul Simon) indict our society like that!" Of course, it became an instant classic and helped kick off the Hippy movement with its socially conscious indictment of society.

      I was a teenager in 1963/1964 when the Simon & Garfunkel song came out. What I recall is that all of us young ones just thought it was beautiful, missing the message altogether. I got it this time with the cover highlighted with David Draiman's powerful singing. I'm 73 and you're right, it kicked off the hippy movement and I went into that too. Ha! Enjoyed your comment.

    One of the best remakes ever done. I saw them in concert when they did this song live. The crowd was still and silent.till the end. They did an amazing job with this song.

    I don’t know who said it, but someone commented that the original version was a prophecy and this version was anger that no one had listened to it. Something like that. Very moving. Both versions.

  • @Melly01
    @Melly01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    Agree ... David Draiman's voice is definitely special and his underlying training as a cantor is the foundation of all of his music. When you pay attention to how melodic their metal music is under the distortion and how you can easily understand most of the words, you see how that training kicks in. They are true musicians and they don't play and sing music that just anyone can do in their garage.
    The original lyrics were written in the early 1960s by Simon & Garfunkel. They were pretty prophetic, I'd say, when you apply them to today's society. For me the lyrics are about a social divide and the inability to communicate with each other. People have no listening skills these days and when you spend your time on social media posting meaningless memes ... you're not saying a lot, either. I love this version - the only one I actually paid atrention to. And I do love the hope at the end of the video, with one set of people willing to meet the other set, the sun rising in the background ... we can only hope that people will pull their heads out of their backsides and begin communicating instead of allowing their world to be their electronic devices.

      @Gort-Marvin0Martian - I think you’re right. I was around for the original S&G, I’ve listened to a lot of great music in my life, but I can’t recall ANY song that has moved me as much as this version does. I get chills, tears, all of it. It’s stunning. It’s powerful. It’s big. Words haven’t been invented yet to describe the depth of this version. It puts a totally different spin on the song.

  • @IllumeEltanin
    @IllumeEltanin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    The original of this song is from the 60s, written and performed by Simon and Garfunkel. S&G's version is a warning of where society was headed; Disturbed's is more a statement of "this is where we're at, now let's fix it."
    As was stated, David Draiman was on track and in training to be an Orthodox Jewish cantor; I believe his grandfather was an internationally recognized one at an important synagogue in Jerusalem. But, the lifestyle of the religiously observant didn't settle easily on him, so he left and never completed the training, nor got ordained.
    The Sound of Silence has been covered many times. Paul Simon, the song's composer, has recognized Disturbed's version as his favorite.

    David Draiman, an incredible voice!....powerful, controlled, haunting and can go from clear as a bell to vocal fry on a dime and back whenever he wants to. Most people wouldn't realize how incredible his voice is if they haven't heard this......since they are just used to his "metal" vocals. Amazing!

      I mean props to Simon and Garfunkel for writing the thing in the first place but David Draimon and Disturbed brought it to life in a way that they didn't. He's just an insanely talented vocalist and that's what really seals the deal on this version of the song.

    I grew up listening to this song by Simon & Garfunkel & have always loved it. I had a lot of their records. Many people have covered this song. Disturbed's version is a much darker take on this song. Peter Hollens & Tim Foust (from Home Free) do a great version of this song. Their voices complement each other perfectly & the layering of their voices is amazing. I hope you will check it out.

    Typically I lean towards the original version, BUT I honestly love this. I've watched this video many times and I'm still picking up on new bits of the symbolism it contains. Simon & Garfunkel's version sounds calm & hopeful. This version comes across as the hope has almost died and they are ranting against the lack of any progress by humanity.
    I bought the video and I still get chills every time I watch it.

    As many have said already, Simon and Garfunkel! I was 11 years old when this song came out in 1964. I loved it then and was stunned when I heard the Disturbed cover. Was on my way home from work when it came on the radio and I was just blown away by the Disturbed cover. Actually think his interpretation is more powerfully done than the original.

    I loved your smile when he strung out the last Sounnnnnnnnnd as most people don't react to that amazing way he sang that word. A couple have commented on it but very few visually smile to it. It adds so much oomph to the song in that third last word.
    God asked David do you want the voice of an angel or a Demon and he said yes lol. I've heard people say he's got an angelic voice and others have said it's almost demon like . He's got both. And omg it works.

    Wow, you are young! This is a classic Simon and Garfunkel song from 1966, written by Paul Simon. But Disturbed has taken this tune to a whole new level. Tbh, I wasn’t a S&G fan back in the day. They were too mellow for me. I liked the Doors, Stones, Zeppelin, etc. my taste hasn’t changed all these years later. I still gravitate towards really good rock. I was stunned speechless the first time I heard this version. S&G can’t even come close. You should listen to the original S&G - and then you’ll understand why everyone is so pumped about this version. I don’t think this song will or can be done better than Disturbed’s rendition.

    Well, once you read them, I think the meaning of the lyrics will be pretty clear. It’s about alienation, first of all, and how we don’t listen to one another. And how we have become enslaved to false gods (money, greed, fame, celebrity) and we are being warned “the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls” that there will be hell to pay if we don’t listen. And the scariest thing about those lyrics was that they were written in 1965, over 55 years ago. And they are even more true now than they were then

  • @shaunna6673

    Please listen to the original by Simon and Garfunkel. They wrote it back in the 60's when TVs were coming into every household and stopping conversations. Just like today with everyone's nose to their phone, disconnected from those around them. We need to wake up and be present with those that we are around so we stop missing those real connections and real conversations that need to be had. Disturbed sounds the alarm bells to this issue rather than just a quiet reminder that nobody heeds.

There are covers aplenty out there, Pentatonix especially have done a wonderful version and while I’m not usually a fan of covers generally, the first time I heard his it blew me away and changed my mind. David Draiman has the most exquisite baritone and in my opinion is wasting his voice singing heavy metal. I’d so love to hear him do some more classical songs. This is just sublime

    When I watched a technical analysis showing this was pitch-corrected (not auto-tuned to buggery like the live Conan O'Brien version) I was slightly let down, but only slightly because the passion and power is still there. It just means people trying to emulate this performance are attempting to reach false perfection.

    • @silversong4VR
      @silversong4VR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't believe there is any music not corrected in post, it's the way of the industry to have perfect sound and effects to bring out the most emotion from the public. As for auto-tune in the live Conan show, I only heard one spot where that "might" have happened, second verse I think. But it could also have been his own amazing techniques coming into play. But honestly, I don't care what they do so long as I get to FEEL the music and emotion being put forth by the artist...and David does that so well.
