    Thanks for the feedback on using a 5# 8&1/2’ rod on the Usk Andy.
    Used the wrong channel logo on that one. Might save up for a Greys GR80:10ft streamflex - sounds the business. My other rod is a bit OTT at 6/7# 10’ - which I use for Draycote water & sea trout on the dart.

    With the greatest respect to all your videos(which are all great) . This one was probably the best one so far. The narrative was very a very interesting insight to your thoughts on the day and situation. IB should do one like this too. We'll done.

    Hi Andy. Great information as usual and good to see such a prolific hatch considering last years low water levels. Don't get me wrong; I'm a fan of The W&U but it's somewhat frustrating that some landowners can't be bothered to remove the man made snags. This can only discourage some anglers from returning. Might have to change our springtime trip from May to April, although one is always at the mercy of the weather. Very much appreciate your vlogs..... Next best thing from being there myself.

    Another great vlog as ever. It's great to see the flow of new material, knowing how much discipline it takes to make that happen. Thank you. I was astonished by the amount of man-made debris in the water. I have fished a few W&U Passport beats and none appeared to have had even basic maintenance - lots of debris and junk in the water. I'm not an advocate of manicured beats but clearing out the junk to make them reasonably fishable seems to me to be a basic requirement if anglers are to be encouraged to keep coming back and spending money. Just a view.

    • @DavidCESmith
      @DavidCESmith ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree with you Stephen. The beat in Andy's vlog is one of the most expensive on the W&U Passport and has just been left to decline by the owners. Andy is such a gentleman but I'd feel cheated if it had been me.

    Hi Andy,
    I felt your pain with the fish you lost, and I am amazed at how often the Usk brown trout like to get airborne.
    For once I know exactly where you were fishing. I walk along the eroded far bank at 10.40 to fish the beat above, and have always admired the pool you started in, but from our side.
    I should have mentioned it in my previous post when, I blanked a couple of weeks ago in bright conditions and clear water, that there was a huge grannom hatch, the likes of which I have never seen. The air was thick thim them, blowing upstream. Unfortunately I never saw a single rise, so can only assume they were taking nymphs down deep.
    Very frustrating, but a wonderful sight.
    Better luck next time!

    • @IBandAndyFishing
      @IBandAndyFishing  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a funny one with the grannom, sometimes they just don't want to eat them off the surface - a got lucky in a way, wouldn't have minded putting a few more fish in the net though!

    • @davidrobinson1607
      @davidrobinson1607 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do find the Usk quite difficult sometimes. The week before I blanked I had caught 17 (one of the best days fishing of my life) and thought I had cracked it! Amongst all that fun I did manage to lose a fish of a lifetime (for me). I hooked a fish right at the tail of a pool, on the swing, in a fast flow with flooded bushes below. Had nowhere to go and eventually the hook pulled under the pressure. The fish thrashed on the surface the whole time and I reckon it was between 4 and 5lb! I wasn't quite as polite with my expletives as you were!

  • @matthewrodwell3959
    @matthewrodwell3959 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Andy, good vid. I notice all the small trout are very silvery almost like peel. There is quite a variation of markings on the Usk by the look of it. My main reason for commenting is your knee pads. I fish a lot of small rugged streams in the west country and my waders leek all the time. I do a lot of fishing off my knees. Where do you get them?

  • @britain4europe65
    @britain4europe65 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Andy how long a leader do you use on the Usk. The rod & line I use is a bit heavy at 5# but use a 15ft tapered leader to keep the line away from any fish. Have I got to spend some money and get some lighter tackle.

    • @IBandAndyFishing
      @IBandAndyFishing  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! No, is the answer, in fact that 5# rod will turn over a longer leader nicely. I think you're about right at 15', sometimes I go longer on the real glassy flats when the wind is low

    Great Vid ... what are your thoughts on fish throwing hooks after a break off.. The irony of worrying about fish after I deliberately try and stick a hook in their mouths is not lost on me but I would like to think they will be ok

  • @DjayxJW
    @DjayxJW ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm curious when you make the choice to step up your tippet with Euro Nymphing. I think you said you were on 6x or 7x tippet, you had a couple of breaks, would it be worth it to step up to 5x or would that ruin the presentation? Stamp of fish, flow and snaggy/bouldery bottom might have warranted a step up, I'm not sure though.

    • @IBandAndyFishing
      @IBandAndyFishing  ปีที่แล้ว

      In hindsight, yes, I might have gone up to 5x, though I'm not sure how much difference it would have made in truth, that place was a graveyard. Lessons learned for sure!

    Hello Andy. I used to really enjoy fishing on the Usk about 30 years ago and I love your presentation which makes it feel like I am there once again.
    I had made a comment here (since removed) about using de-barbed hooks because of all the break offs caused by the rocks and snags on the Usk. However, I now realise that this was completely unnecessary as I can see that all your fly packs use barbless hooks already so well done to you and I hope that you make a lot of sales. I used to fish at Gliffaes but that has now been sold off. Does anyone know who now owns it and if fishing might one day be possible again? I loved that place.
    Best Wishes, Paul
