  • Andy heads off t0 the river Usk in Wales, on a three day fly fishing trip. Armed with spider, dry fly and euro nymph techniques, he's hoping for some of the large brown trout which the river is famous for. Early season fly fishing can be tough, and Andy finds things aren't going to plan! By utilising north country spider fishing, dry fly fishing for brown trout, and euro nymphing though, he's able to find fish, but can he land them?! The first of a three part river fishing videos series fishing adventure, this river usk fly fishing trip for brown trout can only get better......

    Morning Andy.
    With all the places you fish, it is good to see the Usk gets your juices flowing!
    I live an hour away in Gloucestershire and have just joined a local angling association. The place is amazing - fantastic scenery and wildlife, sometimes getting within feet of mink and otters.
    I have fished the Usk 5 times so far and my returns have gone: 2, 1, 7, 17 and last week none.
    I have found a raised water level with a bit of colour best for fishing March brown and LDO weighted nymphs and spiders. The way those 2 pounders take on the swing when they are on it!
    Last weekend was lower and very clear and without a cloud in the sky. Struggled. I do find clear conditions more challenging.
    Keep up the good work.
    (I am heading off to the Usk this morning, so wish me luck!)

      @@IBandAndyFishing Managed 5 in a (for me) short session. Biggest 1.5lb.
      Took me about 10 takes before I hooked one! There was an awkward upstream wind, and it was cold.
      Four took a weighted march brown nymph, and the last one I actually managed to tempt on a dry.

    Hi Andy, a very good video and always good to see someone else who strikes too early occasionally. One of your best videos for content and visuals. Thank you for your time and hard work for the benefit of others. With a lot of still water comps and a golden wedding coming up I doubt I shall get much river fishing in until September when I have our EPFFA Open Rivers comp on the River Ure so until then its just local still water lakes and a few trips on the Midland Reservoirs. Best wishes, Iain Fraser.

    Despite being on different continents our fishing experiences seem to have synced up! Everything you said about fishing the Usk, could have been applied to my session last night on Pine Creek. Conditions looked perfect for fishing a dry fly, and I even bought a dozen flies on my way to the river to fill some gaps in my fly box I have not had time to tie. Of course the fish had other ideas! I think I got there too late as it was an after work session, and when I first arrived there were plenty of bugs in the air, but notably none on the water. I never rigged the dry fly rod. I don't think I have ever worked so hard, fishing 3 hours to produce one Rainbow, long after the sun was down behind the canyon rim. That came on a micro streamer I had put on the point of my euro rig in a last desperate attempt at a deep narrow section! I had fished every possible kind of water from pocket water in the rapids to flat slow pools and everything in between. The more I learn, the less I seem to know!
    Great job with that Brown Trout, very unlucky with that other fish that got off at net time. The thing is, the hard days just make the good days so much better! Thanks for the video, and I look forward to seeing day 2 very soon.😀

    The way you roll cast those spiders with such ease is mad. Everytime i try and do that the flies just get caught up in friction with the water and the line ends up going nowhere. Usually takes me multiple attempts to get any distance at all. I seriously need to get a days guiding with you because I'd love to be able to do that so easily.

      Hi Marco, for this method of spider fishing I use a 7' tapered leader (an old 9' with a foot or so off each end), then two tippet rings about 30" apart each with a 5" dropped. The point fly is another 30" length of tippet

    Can you fish this on a day ticket?
    Do you do lessons?
    I was also wondering if there is a video on a spider rig - is that 3 wet flies?
    And on the dry fly rig, you just using one weight of leader from the main line to the fly? Cheers

  • @DavidCESmith
    @DavidCESmith ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very nice Andy and many thanks in sharing your knowledge and perceptions. Will be trying the wet fly method when I'm there in a month's time - depending on conditions and fish behaviour. If there was less flow, would you advise using a less heavy point fly? Also, would you ever consider using spiders without a weighted point if the fish were taking on the top? Kind regards, David.

    • @IBandAndyFishing
      @IBandAndyFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David, it isn't just speed of water but depth too. Where I started fishing the spiders was deeper than I usually like to spider fish (between 3 and 4 feet) hence the heavier point fly. Where I caught the fish was shallower but much faster so I felt like I still needed the extra weight. Also, I wasn't seeing rises so had to assume the fish were sat deeper. Ordinarily I'd try to fish less weight/weightless on the point because I prefer the presentation. Had I have been seeing rises I'd have definitely fished lighter
