UPDATE: Ben have edited and deleted certain parts of the video so the original comments below might be a bit out of the picture. Universiti Malaya isn't perfect, but calling it a 'scam' is just irresponsible. Coming from Eritrea, one of the least developed countries even by African standards, where their best university isn’t even close to 9,000th place in world rankings, and then calling UM a 'scam'? Really? There are hundreds of students from more developed countries studying in UM including China and they really love the place. He is really ungrateful of UM and the opportunity he got to study outside his country Eritrea (which I don't expect he will want to return and live there).
Claiming Malay language has no grammar is utterly ignorant. I'm Malaysian with Tamil as mother tongue but has been teaching Malay for about 20 years. I don't blame the African student, blame it on our own people. We make our national language a joke all the time.
Yup he made a few offensive comments, that are also untrue. Malay might be a very phonetic language, hence makes it consistent and easy to learn, but calling it a language without grammar is a comment that makes him look like an idiot after the offensive comment about UM is a scam. Yes, you can give constructive criticisms like saying "there are rooms for improvement" but flat out calling it a scam is just rude and shows shallow opinion.
What grammar do we have? Kindly explain? Also. Stop getting triggered over nothing. I am ashamed that Malaysians give such a violent reaction to this video. You can politely correct his misconception and explain that BM has tenses (If that is true). However you choose to be triggered over nothing and leave rude comments.
@@secrets.295 Every language would have grammatical rules. Like we put nouns before adjectives (Rumah besar). There imbuhan and we classify objects with penjodoh bilangan.

Thank you for the insightful content. As a Malaysian, I truly appreciate hearing diverse perspectives and experiences from foreigners about Malaysia, whether positive or negative. Such viewpoints are invaluable as they help us identify and address issues that we, as locals, might overlook due to our familiarity with the environment. Thus, foreign opinions are incredibly beneficial. Thank you, sir! Please continue creating content like this!

I was living there for 3 months. The weather is very very humid so get a good place with great air conditioning! Western money goes a long way with 5 to 1 ringett to dollar. Kuala Lumpur is very modern with great attractions. But of you are looking for a busy nightlife. There is not much alcohol or clubs! Putra Jaya is very clean and IOI Resort city is great place to stay next to largest mall. I also visited Penang.
I think we all need to learn to take other opinions in and see from their perspectives. Personally, I'm grateful that the guy from Eritrea was being honest in the interview. However, as many has said in the comments, the rank is not based on the structures and layouts of the university. It is mostly based on the courses which are being offered there, and the post-graduates' success in finding jobs after they finished their studies. The data doesn't lie, and it's being recognized internationally so calling it as a scam just because you have to walk further than expected sounds unfair. I do agree on his point about giving more attentions to the current students' situations there. If UM is one of the best universities because of the academic aspect, it doesn't hurt to improve on the other aspects as well, yes? I feel like the guy was an honest guy, but lack maturity in making his comments; but at the same time i think it was not his intention to humiliate UM. Hope my fellow Malaysians can show an example by remaining respectful and matured; we aren't perfect and other people's opinions matter too. Thanks for the video Ben, cheers :)
F him… he is lucky because he international student. Every university in the world have quota to give foreigner… many Malaysia crack their head to go UM and he said is a scam… fuck him
@@RUHappyATM At that point, you're better off directly addressing those in charge instead of here. Like it or not, it's currently Malaysia's top university and if you have *any sense of respect for Malaysians* especially as a foreigner, you have to humble yourself and not be rude and instigating riots with bad intentions. Malaysia doesn't welcome that attitude here, and they've already done their best upholding a nice reputation of being somewhat tolerant and friendly of foreigners and immigrants compared to other countries like Japan and Korea. Keep up your side of the lot and be respectful too.
Great content, Ben! You're like a mix between Chai Travel and Cheap Charlie Chronicles/Billy Blue, but with more varied questions than CT and without the social anxiety/autism of CCC. I love seeing your channel grow the way it has.
Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) is currently ranked as the top university in Malaysia according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for 2025, holding a spot within the 201-250 global band. This ranks UTP above other universities in the country, including Universiti Malaya (UM), which previously held the top position in other ranking systems. UTP’s strengths lie in research quality, industry collaboration, and a strong focus on engineering and technology.
Oops Malaysians here won’t be happy about your comment abang. They seem to be so pressed up by the opinion of a student some are even protesting for his deportation. How sad
Im in Kota Kinabalu Borneo now and the last few days have been very hot. Before that we had weeks of rain and bad weather. Now is a good time to visit Mount Kinabalu.
UM is the oldest university in Malaysia, but not the oldest campus. As some might already know, the original UM was situated in Singapore before they split from Malaysia. So the current campus was setup in 1962 (if I recall correctly). The oldest university campus is UTM KL campus (Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra, formerly known as Jalan Semarak and Jalan Gurney before that). It was built in 1950s as a Technical College, but later was upgraded until it became a university. So if one is complaining about old facilities, one should visit UTM KL campus. If you want advanced facilities, try Taylor's or UTP. But get ready to pay the big bucks.
I lived in Malaysia 4 years, as an Irish Expat working in Engineering. I loved it there and hope to return later to retire there. Amazing place. I lived in KL and Puteri Harbour in Johor.
why are people so pressed about the um comments? as a um student i do agree that the infrastructures need updating and um can do better.. lol relax resorting to racist remarks is just so vile
University of Malaya UM ; the oldest set up by the British colonial based in Singapore n kuala Lumpur campus...when Malaya separated become Malaysia n Singapore., Singapore main campus change the name to the current national University of Singapore✅️ 🇲🇾🇸🇬✌️
And over 60 years later, NUS is ranked much higher. THE World, 19. QS World, 8. ARWU World, 68. UM, 2024. THE World, 251-500. QS World (2025), 60. ARWU World, 401-500. Why?
@@RUHappyATM The issue is with management. It is the only education system in the world that uses racial quotas instead of focusing primarily on talent, making it challenging to achieve progress.
@@benfishermin What, you met him randomly?! When I saw that interview, I thought it was planned. To meet him randomly like that is purely an amazing coincident. Wow, what a small world. From what I have observed, many older educational institutions in Malaysia sadly lack proper maintenance and upkeep. This contrasts sharply with many much older universities in the Western world. Then again, it is much more challenging to maintain these facilities due to the heat and humid weather. Mold issues are one of the biggest challenges they face, stemming from the constant heat and wetness (constant rain and high dew point temperature).
Try Sungai Lembing (Lembing River) near to Kuantan. My suggestion is to stay 3D2N. Go for a hike up the mountain for sunrise and the sea cloud… amazing experience with nature. 2nd thing to do is to go for the Rainbow waterfall. 4wd drive up mountainous road and crossing rivers and we need to hike for about 45mins to reach the waterfall.
Relax guys it’s just the Eritrean’s opinion. Why not take it into consideration? If you can make something better than isn’t it only a good thing? We don’t have to be stuck in time because of upholding hurt egos but rather progress and improvement should be a society’s priority.
you should apply in Singapore University such as NUS & NTU so beautiful and great facilities. march recognisable in the world. Even in Bangkok Chulalongkorn is awesome university too
Please visit Cameron Highlands & Fraser's Hill for a colonial experience. Both these places were developed for the British to escape the heat. The colonial bungalows are quaint and picturesque. The biggest draw is the cool mountain weather, tea estates, temperate fruit (strawberries), vegetables (asparagus) farms and flower gardens. The English tea and scones experience caps the full experience.

Hi Ben, First of all, thank you for sharing your thoughts and for your efforts in interviewing others to gather honest feedback. To be frank, my ex-boyfriend, who is American from New York, told me that he doesn't like Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at all. He mentioned that the multiple languages spoken here make it difficult for him to communicate with me and my friends. I felt really sad to hear this, especially when he criticized my English skills. 😒He also noted that food and transportation, particularly Grab, are quite expensive compared to Nepal and Indonesia. Maybe cos I don't have a car after I lost it when encountered car accident and he feels inconvenient without the car. 🤷🏽♀ I hope he can understand that Malaysia is a multicultural environment, and he shouldn't expect our language to be the same as that of other countries, especially when it comes to English. I apologize for bringing up my personal life, but I was overwhelmed when I watched your TH-cam video and found myself thinking about him unexpectedly. 😬By the way, I have guided several foreigners from Couchsurfing in the past and even took them hiking. They often commented that the forest was challenging due to the humid weather and muddy ground when it rains, and they weren't fond of the leeches! Hahaha~ 🤣 Anyway, welcome to Malaysia! I'm glad to hear that you love it here.😉
I get where he's coming from. University Malaya indeed needs to be renovated. It's old, dark and dingy. Generally, 1960's/70's architecture and interior has an eerie and depressing vibe.
Interesting interviews😊. Oh boy, she didnt try durian? I go crazy over it. Its my favourite. Should teach her to try the good species ones first. Then she'll always love it😂😂😂
Ben, come to Terengganu. It's nice over here too, but more local culture, definite old culture vibe, and lots of nature. I've lived in Malaysia 15 years (now married to a Malay) and we have a house on the TG river. 😊
That guy is not wrong anyway. The best university in Malaysia, including the facilities and the environment, was. 1 - limkokwing 2 - sunway College 3 - penesula College( penang)

Its great effort by you Ben for exploring foreign tourists's experience & opnion...but , it seems you missed out some of the other visitors from the middle eastern countries, japan , china , koreans or even from the neighbors of malaysia such as indonesians, singaporeans , filipinos and the thais as well. As you can see in areas such as bukit bintang , KLCC , cameron highland s etc there are just a mixing pot of all nationalities from all over the world walking in the street , shoulder to shoulder...its amazing if you could cover some of those people as well...possibly a bit tough in communicating, especially language wise but it would be more fun I believe...
Many visitors to Singapore tend to compare it to other Southeast Asian countries, perhaps due to geographic proximity and similar cultural roots across the region. However, this can overlook the fact that Singapore is a highly developed nation with a robust economy and infrastructure, more comparable in cost of living to cities like Tokyo, Zurich, or even New York rather than Bangkok or Hanoi. 😐

Honestly, I think the concept of universities in Malaysia is either really modern buildings or in the woods. My university is huge and we walk a lot to go to places, it's surrounded by untouched forest and wildlife. I see monkeys on my way to class and it's honestly a unique experience & an escape from my city home. I'm sure what the student meant by "the university looks old" is just the lack of maintenance. An older building design is nostalgic but it must be maintained to ensure its glory from decades ago still shine in the modern era. I've friends from UM who are locals and they complained about how disappointing the dorm rooms are in terms of maintenance.
Hi Ben, I'm back in K.L. and have some cultural interest in Malaysia but regrettably never came to this country until this year, shame on me! I have watched quite a few of your videos and mostly I like them; keep up the good work.
UM look olds but Gold, it teach their students to be humble and have good physically 🤣. Even UITM got some small mountain and big mountain also we walking with far from faculty and hiking free workout😊. We didn't want wait for Bus. But it's feel adventure and fun if you make a good friends.
UM amenities, facilities, and infrastructures are old and not well maintained, sure. but academically, UM is one of the best universities in the whole of Asia. we have amazing universities if you’re looking for comfortability like Taylors.
Hi Ben, great job thus far. Could you please ask the tourists their initial reaction to flying into Malaysia and hearing the mandated message somewhere along the lines of 'death penalty for drugs etc' - basically how they felt landing into Malaysia and listening to the capital punishment announcement? I had never heard of this country until just a few minutes ago.🤔
As an UM alumni, I think the Eritrean student is really irresponsible and so ungrateful..
This guy could be a scammer? Like the many I meet under the Eiffel Tower?
UM a scam, anyone top ppl over there in UM please find this particular student and cancel his student visa snd depott him
Claiming Malay language has no grammar is utterly ignorant.
@@secrets.295 I don't see rudeness here, i see people trying to educate. You, on the other hand sound like you are getting worked up over people defending their Uni and Language. I think it was a healthy discussion, until you use the word "violent reaction". Perhaps you could use help in defining the word "violent"!

It was nice go get interviewed by you Ben! We got to discuss interesting topics on and off the camera! Good luck with your projects men 💪
Thanks a lot for the interview and your nice comment!
Calling a university where u study a scam is just so irresponsible.
Exactly!
Eritrea...I've never heard where the hell he came from...ask him to study in his unknown country...
As a Malaysian, I can tell what level a university is. Judging and believing a uni based on the level is one's misjudgment and lack of knowledge. Hence, he has to succumb to his own decision.
@@Pian_Malaya Yeah he is annoying
@@Dmax76-w9s he’s a slow decision maker, at least he should come visit the uni before applying. From the interview everything is last minute, but at least he should be able to pack his stuff and leave if he really hates the uni

I appreciate that thank you. Today I actually talked with the ministry of tourism and was happy to hear they really enjoy the videos I'm doing here 😀

What a wonderful video. It's really good to see Solo in your interviews. Both of you guys are Americans and have channels that Malaysian adores. Awesome.
Wow Ben, been counting your viewers. As at today 800k. Just cross your finger, hopefully surpass 1 million this month. Congratulation😊
Thanks, now passed 1mil views for the past month, so happy about that as it's way more than before 😀 - i.postimg.cc/nzcmJ0c7/Screenshot-2024-10-30-002356.png
Fair assessment. Kudos for being civilized about this all.
You can be honest in expressing yourself, but don't need to be offensive, calling an institution a scam is not smart!
Different ranking systems ranked UM differently. Care to explain the discrepancies?
Nice, I enjoy these interviews, because they're getting into some depth. Very interesting.
Awesome, thanks I'm happy to hear this 😀😀

Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) is currently ranked as the top university in Malaysia according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for 2025, holding a spot within the 201-250 global band. This ranks UTP above other universities in the country, including Universiti Malaya (UM), which previously held the top position in other ranking systems. UTP’s strengths lie in research quality, industry collaboration, and a strong focus on engineering and technology.

I like that UM student. He's been very honest. Even I myself as a local has been questioning for years why UM is in top 100... Haha

They should go to Terengganu. There are some super beautiful islands in Terengganu.
I appreciate your work interviewing tourist about Malaysia. You make me appreciate my country even more,

Hi Ben,
First of all, thank you for sharing your thoughts and for your efforts in interviewing others to gather honest feedback. 🤷🏽♀
I hope he can understand that Malaysia is a multicultural environment, and he shouldn't expect our language to be the same as that of other countries, especially when it comes to English. Hahaha~ 🤣
Anyway, welcome to Malaysia! I'm glad to hear that you love it here.😉

I didn't know we get so many visitors from Germany. Herzlich wilkommen!
