I will not stand for this slander of my boy, Finis Valorum. He was a decent politician who was trying to hold the Republic together in difficult times, made all the worse by the Sith running around setting fire to everything they could, but doing it's secretly so it could never be traced back to them. He was outnumbered and outplayed in the Senate. Let us not forget that he sent the Jedi to negotiate an end to the Naboo Crisis, a move which forced Palpatine to act more aggressively by having the Jedi killed (which failed) and invading Naboo. After he left office, Valorum was sure Palpatine had engineered the whole thing, but couldn't prove it.
The Courts too. He probably had the constitution changed to give him the ability to directly hand out political appointments to them, which could in turn shield him from legal challenges. And considering the type of system, and that he had already extended the normal term limits for the office, he probably took advantage over losses in his “majority” coalition in the Senate to call for new elections and then arrange for something to happen, during the election campaign period, and spin that into as “proof” for the need to his policies or why his policies work. Like say he was tough on crime or dissidents out in the Expanse Region, time some big event or flare up to happen during the election, which changes the narrative on why now is most critical time to show strength against such. All a sudden, the tide turns to his favor and his coalition wins more seats then they had before, and they overwhelmingly support his candidacy for chancellor and even the opposite is reluctant to put up much a united front against him or his policies. So, once he secures the Chancellorship, he takes advantage of that by pressing for constitutional changes and appointments to his political buddies.

@@paradoxworkshop4659 uh, you forgot about the fact that a constitutional republic has more flexibility than a democracy.
@merafirewing6591 if flexibility means a rapid descent into fascism, then yes, and I appreciate the intentional missing of the point that most people engage in by trying to point out the otherwise unimportant technicalities, which then, in turn, allow the bigger picture to be obscured.
@@paradoxworkshop4659 or are you a communist sympathizer? Since you forget the other side of the aisle?
If so, go to north Korea and preach democracy there and forgo you identity as a American, you just too brown shirt to see the bigger picture.
Democracy is a great idea and all, but if i were in charge, im manipulating the minds of the people as much as possible...
I can't take the chance to let 50%+1 remove me from my cushy, powerful seat.
What??
You would either do the same or never even be in the seat in the first place.
Respect The Game.

Well said

“President Trump is a Sith lord!”
Liberal bias
He isn' that smart, more like the fool that is the public face

Honestly, I don’t blame these people for acting as it’s a sky is falling, they’ve spent the last 9 years screaming Trump is H*tler so much they actually believe it now.
What does Trump have to do with this video?
If they--because Lucas doesn't deserve all the credit, I figure we ought not to crown him emperor of something he never could have built alone--weren't channeling Herodotus when they plotted out Palpatine's story, I'll eat my lightsaber.
The pattern is general, yes, but tell me Lucas didn't know his Greek histories. And I'm not just talking 'bout the hummus (hubris)--look up "CBC Ideas: How to become a tyrant in 5 steps", that'll get you a better and more succinct summation than I can provide.
Greatest villain in cinema. I’d kill for a show focused on his rise
Great timing. My allegiance is to the republic.
reminds me of the rare few individuals in ancient greece and rome that willingly put aside their powers as dictator. mind you, dictactor in the roman republic was quite different to what we consider it to be today.
The Prequels, still relevant.
Watched the full series, I enjoyed it
Palpatine chose a means to an end.
twisting the constitution; how topical.
I love fiction that definitely has nothing to do with real-world politics
How does the political representation of Coruscant work? It seems to be under the executive control of the Chancellor. Is there a Senator for the most populous planet in the Galaxy?
I thought it was the Corusca sector??!!? Because there’s several moons and the planet.
Well done and thank you sir. I needed this. For its contribution for my understanding of Star Wars lore only. Not because it relates to any other causes of real life existential crisis or hopelessness. Nope. Not one bit
hmmmm....
sounds...
familiar.

Critics will hold a mirror up to you. Yes men will simply say you look good and send you out in your new “clothes”
Palps, the architect of the starwars galaxy Chevron laws.
What curious timing
👍👍
Very astute Allen, you got alot of things right except for one thing. Darth Binks wasn't manipulated.
precisely... pretended to be the biggest fool, becomes general and senator... a simpleton would never achieve these ranks, he used force manipulation all the way through to seat Palpatine, he was part of the Sith conspiracy.
Darth Blinks, that made my evening. Thank you! 😅
If you’re reading my words u carry democracy inside of u and know that u r not alone. Stand firm and hold onto hope for democracy only dies when we give into despair.
I am here too.
Bo-katan: "politics."
Lions eh. Nothing a blaster can't handle.
Palpatine was the proverbial dog who caught the car. He undermined the Republic and seized power so masterfully then didn't really govern all that well, overreacting to insurgencies that never posed that much of a threat, not giving enough of the populace a stake in the continuation of the empire and too many a motive for overthrowing it, not creating a organizational structure or beauracracy that could continue on if he died.
Palpatine is the Trump of Star Wars.
Let's hope USA people will not let it become fully authoritarian.
BIDEN of Star Wars. Trump is the rebel alliance equivalent.
@@KristopherPrimeWhile I would place Biden as an ineffective chancellor of the old republic, Trump is most definitely Palpatine. He is exploiting justified dislike of a dysfunctional system to gain massive personal power, he doesn’t intend to share a scrap of it with you. You are not an X-Wing pilot facing down the evil empire, you are a senator cheering as Palpatine signs away your personal freedom, because he promises a better world under the new galactic empire.
Hey Alan could you do a video on what would happen if the republic didn’t become the empire and the cis was able to leave the republic and become their own government would that have been a sustainable future for the galaxy?
(Sure, good luck with that Sith-appointed corporate oligarchy. The whole thing was a frame-up, remember?)
8:08 well that was unexpected LMFAOOOOO
“Billiant Fool” on the thumbnail
Can’t believe palpating was a billiant fool
Ah yes, very “billiant”.
If there just had been some kind of time limit to the emergency power or or a retro-active green-lighting process by the people in power at the time of the emergency decree, after emergency measurements were taken...
Either way, we have our own Palpatine story in real-life now but we'll see if this was just a fleeting idea in hindsight 5 years from now.
