    I love that Starship in Star Wars refers to almost every mean of transport. In our world, they would be cars, trucks, jet fighters, cruise/leisure/cargo/Ferry/liner ships, gunships. Pretty much everything else than small means of transport (speeders, bikes) and land armor. It's a bit like in the age of sail where a ship was everything you needed to travel that didn't involve a horse (except when it did for some river ships).

      a starship refers to any spacefaring vessel that has a hyperdrive... an x-wing would be a starship, a tie fighter would not be.

    One thing I find really fun about Starwars ship is just how not fragile they are. I mean these things are a masterpiece of engineering if they can fly across the stars with half their systems missing and a few weld seams holding the frame intact. only be repaired with parts that have been out of use for decades that some one dug out of the mud. Forget real world rockets, you mistaking you engine and the bolts are to weak and every time you use the gear shift it feels like the engine is about to rip its self out.

      This is what I love and admire as well. Of course, even without plot armor, the millenium falcon despite being a literal hunk of junk at this point still kicking is a testament to this fact (especially how damn good corellian engineering is ofc).
      Not to mention the insane deals too!!! Just getting any ship used can save you a lot of credits as well. And of course, the modularity that a decent number of ships have, and should, which is the important component for making any ship great. It goes to speak for itself at length how amazingly engineered these beautiful ships are, and how creative and robust and fascinating they can be.

      considering a tiny little battery the size of a 9v can power a lightsaber for what seems like months, it's expected that the SW universe has rugged equipment. plus the IP was created before the invent of 'planned obsolescence', back when cars and appliances should last long enough to be inherited.

    I for one love that the Star ship market is basically the same as the car market in real life. Instead of ships costing trillions of dollars like they would in real life, they actually just cost what everyday over priced new cars cost, and the used prices are around there too. However used prices in the Star Wars galaxy seem to be lower.

    • @celebrim1
      @celebrim1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      I'm a long time Star Wars RPG game master, and in my universe the explanation for used starships having such low prices is that if you buy a used ship you are typically buying a number of serious problems:
      a) The ship has an empty fuel tank and almost no life support consumables, and the price of fueling a ship fully is a large fraction of the cost of the ship (as many can fly for months back and forth across the whole galaxy on a single tank).
      b) The ship is probably overdue for an overhaul and has developed a number of quirks in its performance that will cause it to perform badly if you push it beyond the routine.
      c) The ship is likely over 30 years old and while it can keep flying it is a maintenance nightmare.
      In short, most used star ships are lemons.

      @@celebrim1 I imagine the regions of the galaxy are much like first-second-and third world countries in the real world in regards to cars. The Outer-rim is a developing third world country where even a lemon is a prized possession. With the exception of more resource rich planets (like cities irl) with nicer starships that may even be new. The Mid-rim is a mix of second and third world. etc... etc... leading up to coruscant being like any other major city with a mix of really new, fairly new, used, and a sprinkle of lemons. Y
      places like Naboo have local manufacturers and most other places rely on distant manufacturers and common parts between ships.

      @simonnachreiner8380 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Considering the galactic economy is literally tens if not hundreds of thousands of planets big it makes sense.
      Remember economies of scale make things cheaper as each part get's a specialized maker who's entire reason for existence is to make part A as cheaply as possible. Considering that literally every backwater world depends on trade for something and is at risk of being raided by hyper militarized space pirates the demand for spacecraft of both civilian and military grade is incomprehensible and the potential suppliers are literally any developed system that can support some kind of domestic craft.

      How much would an F-35 cost to manufacture during WW2? How about in ancient egypt?
      Even if they had the technology necessary for it, the jet would be priceless. Or Dollars sense you say it's a 1/1 ratio. For comparison the Gerald R. Ford Class Aircraft Carrier cost about 13 billion Dolars. Plus, an extra 3 billion a full complement of aircraft of 90. They are similar in length and width, but the VCX is twice as tall. It has much more internal volume.

    i'm at work now and just found this vid so can't watch, but i just finished the rogue squadron series for the umpteenth time and there is one particular quote that mentioned 400k NR credits could purchase 2 xwings with spare parts.
    I feel like with thousands of years of parts and hulls flooding the market, ships are so common and cheap that people just choose not to go to space. the price isn't the limiting factor there like it seems to be in other scifi IPs. which is understandable, today you can find cheap Live on Board boats for as low as $15k, and yet not everyone is out there buying them and living on them because they just prefer solid ground.

  • @derekdrake8706
    @derekdrake8706 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Oh, I just realized that with all this ship lore, you could make a game about a broke pilot managing to buy a headhunter to start doing freelance work and gradually earn enough to buy bigger and better ships. That's.. kind of an obvious game idea for SW, where's that game?

    Another thing you have to remember about the speed of these ships is that they are doing it all with ion engines rather than ignition engines, which means much less carbon emission which is probably why even coroscaunt didnt suffer from global warming. Even the empire cares more about their planets than we do

    This seems to me like a direct reaction to all the frustration among STAR WARS-fans today, who are disappointed by the general course this franchise is taking, while there still is no clear vision of the stories that should be told or said stories' core values. One thing that STAR WARS has always been good at is exactly this, starship design with a distinct look and feel to it, the exact minutiae of these fictional technologies, right down to the imagined cost of them

    Having repulsolifts beijng such a universal technology means that aerofoils are no longer needed to provide lift. Therefore aerodynamics becomes less important. Especially if shields reduced the worst effects of drag by smoothing out the hull shapes of atmospheric flight. Every aircraft we build has every other function fitted in around aerodynamic considerations. The Star Wars universe no longer has that limitation.

    Though, I will say I do really like the affordable Y-Wing bombers. The darn things were almost indestructible in Battlefield 2 (PS2) and dominated space battles, able to engage everything from interceptors to capital ships. It's just a shame it couldn't double as a mobile home.
    The YT-1300 really is the best all-rounder at an affordable price, plus you can live in it.
