IMHO the Empire failed to last any meaningful length of time because: 1. Palpatine ran it like an a**hole instead of sensisbly 2. He was more focused on using Empire resources to study and restore lost Sith knowledge than doing his actual job as Emperor
Eg tbf to palps here, he didn't do a bad job, his problem was those under him like Tarkin. Palpatine actually did do things to help the common man like getting rid of space pirates in ways the republic never cared to and more.
@@isimperialist ya that was him copying ancient sith organizations, which also pitted everyone against each other, causing real talent to die on the vine. He shld have stuck with being the kindly old grandpa palpy that everyone knew and loved.
Well that's kind of the whole point, right? He didn't take over out of some desire to HELP all living beings, but to subjugate and terrify them in order to increase his own Dark Side powers.
How to design the Galactic Empire to be effective: 1 - Establish regional multi-planet districts. 2 - Assign an admiral to each district. 3 - Each planet within the district will provide a prorated share of the operational budget of any forces assigned there. 4 - Limit the duties of each admiral to the following: a - Maintain internal peace among the planets of the district. b - Maintain internal security within each planet. c - Suppress piracy and raiding. d - Defend the district against external threats. e - As necessary, join with other district fleets to combat wider threats. 5 - Rigorously police corruption among the admirals and their officers and staff. 6 - Allow each local government autonomy to rule as its people prefer, so long as they act in accord with the aforementioned steps. Addendum: Don't be ruled by a psychopathic space wizard whose ultimate goal is to destroy civilization from within.
Regarding space wizardry, it may actually be helpful. Imagine a secret service made of force users, trained mostly in precognition and mind reading, and mind manipulations + some other force techniques (mainly for self defence). Then add space into wizardry: every operative has an implanted brain-computer interface, that allows to quickly get information as well to offload anything, they gathered to a giant AI supercomputer to process. Additionally, said chips could suppress emotions, by, say, controlling hormone production, as well as cultivate loyalty - release happiness hormones every time the emperor is mentioned, additionally their own thoughts could be analyzed for the signs of infidelity. Basically a hybrid of the "Machine" from "Person of interest", "Tetragrammaton clerics" from "Equilibrium", Jedi and FBI or even Gestapo. Organisation like this would be able to uncover corruption, enemy agents as well as criminal organisations, manipulate local leaders and respected people into truthfully serving the Empire.
@ARCHAEVS if you read it you would see that the admiral doesn't govern, they police. They just run the security forces in the region, fight corruption within the security forces, and collect taxes that go to the security forces, they would only step into a planetary governments business if ordered to or a situation occurs such as taxes being withheld, rebels not being dealt with properly, pirates on the planet, or another situation in which a military force is needed. This is much better as planets will feel more free, this reduces rebels drastically and because there is a fleet in each region rebels that do appear will struggle to mass together, have a military better adapted to asymmetrical warfare, anti-piracy strategies, and quick mobilization and it would be far better at combatting enemies that the empire would need to expect to fight.
If the Empire had spent money taken from the CIS to rebuild ruined worlds and encourage colonization and securing hyperspace routes then they could’ve explained they were increasing military expenses to protect their new investments.
That title makes me wish a Tywin Lannister kind of character was in charge of the Empire. "The future of our Empire rests in this civil war. We could create an Empire that will last 1000 years... or we could fade into nothing, as the Sith did. _I need all of you to be the Officers this Empire needs!_ Not next year, not tomorrow... _NOW...!"_
Tywin for all his statemenship had faults that undid him. A Star wars Tywin would be goaded into disastrous military campaigns with Red Squadron and its related cells after his pride had been wounded. Much like Robb did in the riverlands/
I always liked how in legends Palpatine was heavily militarizing the galaxy because of the yuuzhan vong threat outside the galaxy. It gave us an original motive by Plagueis and Palpatine as to how they justify their evil actions, because in their minds they were saving the galaxy. New cannon Palpatine has other reasons and justifications but I still prefer the legends reasoning.
that isn't why he was militarizing the galaxy in legends. He was doing it because that is what the Sith do. There was never any evidence that he did it because of the Yuuzhan Vong, and plenty of evidence that he would have continued to do it even if the Yuuzhan did not exist.
He'd already planned a military regime before encountering Thrawn and being alerted to the threat. Thrawn supported the Empire because he believed it was the best defence against the extragalactic invaders.
No, Palpatine was going to form the Empire regardless and was most likely concerned with the threat Yuuzhan Vong posed to the Sith's, more specifically HIS, rule of the galaxy. If the Vong conquered the galaxy, then everything the Sith had planned and schemed for a thousand years would have been for nothing. It would've been purely for selfish reasons.
The Empire should have been successful if they aren’t so full of themselves or doing their own thing for their personal gain. No wonder why they lost against the rebels.
Also the massive buracreacy that was prevalent. Andor's ISB gave us a glimpse of the true workings of the Empire. Not about the Stormtroopers, Super Weapons etc. Just the constant conference meetings, paperwork, quarterly reports, different agencies etc.....its amazing the Empire lasted for as long as it did.
@isimperialist Changing the navy doctrine to be ISD centered was already a blow, but it would've _somewhat had better results,_ if all the resources on the Death Star were instead concentrated on making more ISDs. If it's a gigantic galaxy and we're doing the Tarkin Doctrine anyway, might as well get as many of those battleships out there, to cover more territory!
I think people fail to realize that other than killing all the Jedi and making everyone miserable, because he's an asshole like that, Palpatine really didn't have a plan for the Empire other than to use it to fuel his ambitions to live forever.
He didn't make everyone miserable lol. The Empire did great in many aspects, it's just that Palps allowed the old Republic culture of corruption and apathy to mix with the 'New Order' COMPNOR ideology he had introduced in the years prior to the Clone War. This fostered a semi-shitty culture that led to Imperial ruthlessness not being pragmatic.
Yeah always a funny thing. Also, people say the Republic eras are boring but honestly, that's the fault of the writers not knowing how to. I for one am tired of the empire era. It's like we're frozen in time.
I’d imagine the Empire tax collection bureau was hilariously over-militarized to fund the forever war-economy. Either that, or Palpatine was minting more credits each year than the entire population of Coruscant.
I always read these comments saying Palpatine was an idiot for how he ran the Empire, but he WANTED constant conflict, it was his Sith mantra. He knew the downside of Tarkins policies but he delighted in the fear and other dark side emotions it invoked in the galaxy.
It doesn't benefit in the short-term, over 90% of governments and businesses only care about immediate benefits, if they can't gain immediate pay-offs in doing something they just won't do it

The Galactic Empire has survived 47 years as a centrepiece of pop culture and as the genesis of the trope of authoritarian space dictatorships in modern cinema. I'd wager more has been written about the Galactic Empire than most despotic regimes in history. Stormtroopers guard the toy boxes and bookshelves of more houses than any Army ever has. The sound of a TIE Fighter is probably more recognisable than the roar of an F-16 or Mig in most western countries. Most people could name the star destroyer but not tell a modern Aircraft carrier from a WW2 battleship. Disney's license fees for Star Wars merchandise earns them more than many nations GDP. Credit where credit's due- the idea of the Empire has penetrated our collective psyche enough that gen tech can make a living publishing years of videos criticising the empire's military, economic and foreign policies.
As early as Heir to the Empire it was established that the Imperial forces largely consisted of law enforcement and military professionals who weren't entirely comfortable with Palpatine's megalomania or Vader's temper tantrums - they saw themselves as public servants maintaining order in society.
Yeah, in legends, the moment the empire managed to shake off and weed out Paplatine's influence and get a peace treaty with the new Republic, the (now) Fel empire got pretty strong to the point that they could rival the New Republic and were super stable until the Fel dynasty was overthrown by Darth Krayt!
One simple explanation for why the Empire was ruled that way is that the Empire was just another means to an end for Palpatine. Creating a prosperous and stable civilization that would survive for a thousand years was never the plan, he just needed the resources of the Empire for something else. Perhaps it was the search for immortality or perhaps he wanted to bring back the sith empire, or perhaps it was something else, take your pick.
The Empire also seriously jumped the gun on the oppression. Andor shows us, the Empire already passing unreasonable, arbitrary laws that strip any justice or fairness out of the judicial system. That kind of thing is going to piss everyone off and mean that people will start to rebel under the old adage of "we are already condemned to death so we might as well go down fighting". By arbitrarily arresting tourists on a tourist planet, the Empire probably ruined that planet's economy for decades. However, the Empire was not as firmly in charge as it would be by New Hope days. The Senate still had some power and IBS was still finding its legs as the secret police. If the Empire stayed more benevolent for another decade or two, it would have had a functioning Death Star and the Rebellion would just be starting and easily infiltrated and crushed. Palpatine and his minions were too arrogant and rushed things in their attempts to gain power in the Sith way.
There are already examples of don’t be too strict, because some people really will choose to go down fighting, and they may actually win from history. The first was a rebellion of some army recruits from the Zhou dynasty of China, where they were a day late to their muster, which carry the death penalty so they decided they were going to fight the system because they were already dead men otherwise anyway. The second are the Donbass rebels of Ukraine, who understood that the new Kiev junta was genocidal and put up resistance, knowing that the government meant their extermination should they lose.
@@brianmead7556 Hint; quite literally (almost) every internal rebellion or seditious group in the history of humanity has either not succeeded and never realistically could have, or won primarily if not entirely due to outside interference and context (like, say, a 1000-year old prophecy dictating the birth of a literal Christ-anaolgy to -die for our sins- destroy the Sith, one of whom just so happens to be the omnipotent ruler and linchpin of the ruling government, all of which culminated in a father's love for his son overcoming evil), no matter how EVVVUULL or tyrannical said government is.
@@brianmead7556 Your ukraine example is so bizzare. If anything the Maidan Uprising would suit your narative. A government economic decission leading to protests, which where supressed violently (like shooting civillians from the top of buildings and beatings) leading to the fall of the government. Donbass rebels then attacked regional government buildings and law enforcment with help of outside forces (or the opposite around) only after a month of the new government. Then they started their own reingn of violence, with killings, torture, rape and abduction of civillians.
@@GenerationTech But they are compacted on an Island so most of the population is densely compacted, thus making it way easier. It would be much harder for a country like the US to do so.
The main issue of the Empire is writers (including Lucas) worrying more about telling 1 small story in a giant IP, than fleshing that IP/universe out. Lets be real, none of the downsides of the empire were there for story reasons and more just to hamfist a shot into a short sighted story.
i mean investing in the military isn't a bad thing for the empire but don't invest in massive super weapons and super star destroyers but instead invest in smaller but still effective ships so they can spread out into the galaxy much better to help defend against pirates and such
Nothing bigger than a super star destroyer that would be trotted out for big fleet actions. ISD, Cruisers, destroyers and gunships for smaller conflicts. Garrison worlds in each sector... having a sector governor, a senator and individual planetary governments. Military organized along sector lines, with a small yet effective central military to serve purely imperial ambitions. An ISB to cover all of the bases...everywhere. Each sector can have their own forms of ISB that would be subordinate to Imperial ISB. Don't have a megalomaniac death dealing psychopath in charge. You do this then you have 500 years of an Empire.

I remember when first watching the original trilogy thinking, based on what Obi-Wan told Luke, that the Empire had been around for over a hundred years. When I found out it had only been founded about 20 years before the start of A New Hope, I wondered what kind of industrial engines capable of building so much, so quickly this galaxy had at their disposal. It takes a long time to build an aircraft carrier and yet the Empire was able to put out over 25,000 ISDs in less than 18 years (not to mention building one and a half Death Stars as countless-seeming gigantic bases) Maybe that's what I'm curious about from the lore. Just to use the ISD as an example, I'm assuming it wasn't in pre-planning stages prior to the Emperor's ascension so how did this ship go from conception to architectural drawings to prototype (and every other step in between) in about two years? Is it all just outsourced to droid minds?
Because the timeline doesn't make sense. Yeah, everyone acted like the Empire had been around for a long time, and wasn't going anywhere. Yet it had only been around for like 20 years? Likely something that occurred due to a mistake in the writing room.

The empire was doomed from the start. Built by a man who saw government management as a means to further a occult agenda than on making a strong and lasting state. Filled to the brim with corrupt stratocrats who balk at science and logic and opt instead for cruelty vibes based policy((ie the tarkin doctrine)). It sped ran the alienation of the galactic citizens, doing in 10 years what took the republic 1000 years to accomplish. All while feeding all of their resources into extravagant and impractical military projects in a time where the biggest threat to the empire was small cells of gurellia fighters and pirates. All while, of course, doing everything to make the average imperial citizens life harder and worse, with fewer and fewer spent on utilities or civic projects and the reintroduction of slavery, despite having literal armies of deactivated droids who could do that same work just fine. This empire, like many authoritarian regimes, was a wasteful and bloated nest of corruption and cliques. It was doomed the moment fear was prioritized over having the populace genuinely like your regime.
The rebel heroes probably wouldn't have survived, but the Empire just doesn't seem especially geared towards long term survival. Plus, hundreds of millions of star destroyers could fit in the death star. Even if there was some special material that was more efficiently used in the death star than in a star destroyer, I'd rather have hundreds or thousands of star destroyers than a single death star
i know you probably won’t see this but can you please make a video on the canon hierarchy of the empire (essentially who outranked who in terms of the upper officials like thrawn, tarkin, and vader)
What destroyed the Empire was a lack of a senate. The Empire was run buy a few dozen governors and admirals who got their orders directly from Palpatine. Since there was no senate to elect a new emperor after Palpatine's death, every single one of those governor and admirals had a chance of becoming the new emperor and infighting broke out almost immediately.
He’s right, the empire caused its own destruction. If they worked together with the planners rather than oppress them the empire would have lasted longer. But also each planet would have had more power to get rid of palpatine.
Hitler actually wanted a 1,000 year reich. I can't imagine the hell if he succeeded. man in the high castle gave us a glimpse of what that may have been like.

The problem with military spending is, if you haven't been allocating money to it, you wont have the training programs or the equipment in place when you need it. There's also the costly research programs required to keep technology current - which can take decades before they see tangible results. Not to mention that having the big stick present can prevent costly war from occurring in the first place. It's a balancing act between over spending, and not protecting your territory enough. As far as the post war empire is concerned, there are still gangsters and criminal elements, not to mention the potential threat from secessionists that decide they want to go aggressive and attack their peaceful neighbors. Galaxies are massive, with millions of planets. Even if you say the majority of them are uninhabitable, a galaxy like the Star Wars universe should still have thousands of habitable planets. There's likely some form of conflict going on at all times. The Empire would need the military might to settle that conflict, even if they didn't actually use it. The vast majority of The Empire's military might, is required just to keep it from collapsing in on itself. That's actually what the Death Star was designed to do, keep planetary factions from stepping out of line, which would free up Tarken Doctrine navy assets for other purposes: either to downsize, or to direct to conflict zones where the Death Star wouldn't be useful. There's many more reasons why nation states need military assets, but I'll end my essay here.
i have heard an interesting theory that Palps wanted to do what Valkorian/Vitiate did to one planet on a galactic stage, a dark side ritual make himself a true god. no idea of if true, but interesting.
Excellent argument. However, you overlook one key point. Sidious grew stronger in the Force through other people’s pain, fear and suffering. Therefore, he needed to make people suffer. So the large military and the Tarkin Doctrine were necessities for Sidious.
Actually, the Empire could've won if one of two things happened. -Palpatine treated Vader like a son and had no plans to replace him with Luke, thereby securing Vader's loyalty and not getting killed on Endor. -The Rebels fail to get a Force-sensitive pilot to attack the First Death Star, thereby failing to destroy it since its weak point could only be hit by a Force-user. The Death Star destroying the Rebel Base on Yavin IV would secure Tarkin's final triumph and discourage any further Rebel activity. Literally, the Rebels won because of miracles and acts of mercy. That, and Wedge/Luke carrying the Rebel war effort.
A province in Canada got approval from the federal government to decriminalize the use of numerous hard drugs in the attempt to focus on rehabilitation of individuals that use them rather than criminal punishment. However the initial legislation allowed anyone to publicly carry and use up to a certain amount. They had to amend it to not allow for open public use. It’s a prime example of government stepping in to create legislation that actually eases requirements or burdens on its citizens in an attempt to improve their lives. But only time will tell how effective it actually is.
Great analysis of discipline and orderly societies. This is why Imperial Remnant survived. Gilad Pellaeon used most levelheaded strategies and laws of former Galactic Empire to reform and protect the New Order.
Yep. Alan has some kin of long-standing grudge against dolphins. I think his line is that they are aliens. I'm not sure how/when/why it started, so if someone else knows, I would love to hear it.
Very much a cultural thing too. In Japan, Korea, Singapore, Switz, etc, it's more "what can I do for society". In Japan, guns, drugs, crime, etc are all very taboo and looked down upon with disgust, so the strict rules on them are seen as fair, and rule breakers should be punished. In the West, it's more "what can society do for me". Implement the same strict rules and it'd be an infringement on personal freedom, and people seem to favor leniency even if the rules are broken.
Yeah I’ve always said in the west we can learn from the more communal thinking of the east. And the east needs to value individualism and the value of the individual more.
You make really good points there are a lot of laws and systems that are poorly designed in America. I always enjoy the breakdowns in Star Wars using real world examples really puts everything into perspective.

This is why I think the plan George Lucas originally had (that Palpatine was trying to militarize the Galaxy to prep for an extragalactic invasion) made more sense than the Disney canon, which just had them cementing their power for no reason whatsoever. It makes no sense to have a planet killer to deal with terrorists nor use what are akin to battleships to fight an insurgency
T-that's just wrong. It's factually wrong, actually. Lucas never had the idea to have Palpatine militarize the galaxy for an extraterrestrial invasion.
@@sambridgers9543 Sure he did, Palpatine knew about them and even justified continued militarization due to "extragalactic threats" it wasn't a primary concern but one nonetheless
The Rule of Two was the issue. Two Sith can make a strong super Sith capable of defeating the Jedi, but it doesn't leave room for any weaker more pragmatic Sith to govern or run the Empire. When Palpatine took over and functionally eliminated the Jedi Order, all his Sith philosophies turned inward and created the same kind of environment of internal struggle that Tenebrae's Sith Empire had, but without the actual Force sensitive Sith underlings who benefited from this kind of environment. In Tenebrae's empire, strong pragmatic Sith rose to the top and formed islands of competition around themselves so that while there may be unhealthy competition in their lower ranks, the departments themselves tended to not compete as much because there were always stronger Sith above them, with the Emperor being stronger still. While the non-Force sensitives could sometimes be caught in this, they were more or less left alone and could even prosper so long as they followed the rules. The strong competed against the strong and left the weak alone. In Palpatine's empire, the departments and divisions were turned against each other instead and tore holes in the fabric of the government with the average citizen feeling the consequences.
I my head cannon I always felt the sith needed upheaval and suffering in the galaxy to draw their power from. A peaceful galaxy would weaken the Emporer.
Switzerland is not culturally homogenous, it is very much not centralized, in fact it is one of the last confederations to exist, it is one very few countrys that still practice direct democracy at a federal level, there is no one person with executive power, the executive branch consisting of 7 people with a yearly rotating presidency that is just a formal title, there are large French, Italian, and Romansch minorities in the country not just German speakers and the cantons (states) have massive power over the federal government, people are even worried that in time of war the military is to decentralized to properly fight because the cantons still technically control their own militias.
The Empire's overt over-militarization would make sense in a more realistic and less utopian galaxy. Pretty much every CANON piece of media makes it seem like there's only 2 or 3 factions present in the Galaxy at any one time. Republic vs Sith Empire, Republic vs Confederacy, Empire vs Rebels, etc. As fantastic a setting as Star Wars is, it is woefully undeveloped in the Canon sources. Just consider the state of the galaxy before the Clone Wars. A de-militarized central government presiding over a thousand years of peace?! Bullshit. In a more realistic setting, there'd be constant war between the millions of species, religions, cultures, and ideologies. Not to mention resource and territory wars, religious wars, and petty wars of revenge. If the Galaxy was presented in a more realistic fashion instead of as an impossible utopia, the Empire would make a LOT more sense. Still written to be stupid evil oppressors, but at least they'd have some form of justification.

I think a better story is the empire after termination of their esoteric leaders became a secular entity that ruled the galaxy for 1000 years. Rebel leaders were offered place in the noble ranks thus dissolved this opposition. Luke distant himself from the Jedi practice of abduct children, while sealed all knowledge of force, someday to be rediscovered.
Honestly, Japan might be a bad example because the low birth rates, high suicide rates, and inadequate amount of public trash cans coupled with a draconian home garbage pickup schedule do kinda make it seem like they might just have gone a bit too far down the authoritarian regime route.

IMHO the Empire failed to last any meaningful length of time because:
1. Palpatine ran it like an a**hole instead of sensisbly
2. He was more focused on using Empire resources to study and restore lost Sith knowledge than doing his actual job as Emperor
He also pitted government organizations and officials against each other which led to corruption.

Also, since he destroyed the Jedi Order, he assumed his main enemies were defeated
How to design the Galactic Empire to be effective:
1 - Establish regional multi-planet districts.
2 - Assign an admiral to each district.
3 - Each planet within the district will provide a prorated share of the operational budget of any forces assigned there.
4 - Limit the duties of each admiral to the following:
a - Maintain internal peace among the planets of the district.
b - Maintain internal security within each planet.
c - Suppress piracy and raiding.
d - Defend the district against external threats.
e - As necessary, join with other district fleets to combat wider threats.
The Roman way that worked on a local level, especially when there was a mad emperor in charge...
@ARCHAEVS the galactic empire's admirals tended to be closer to political leaders rather than military ones.
@ARCHAEVS the government was the military, pretty much every very high rank was a political leader.
Me lasting nearly 5-6 years longer than the Empire, that's quite the achievement for me.

I would say Palpatine is just meant to be comically evil, evil for the sake of evil. other villains have various reasons
@@SuperExtremeTNT I agree, but I think both work.
that isn't why he was militarizing the galaxy in legends.
It would've also helped if they didn't spend trillions of credits on the Death Star. The Death Star was the ultimate cause for the Empire's collapse.
Seriously. This applies to so many governments today and throughout history

@@tk-6967 Maybe, but another interpretation is that this is exactly what he wanted. He is a Sith after all, and this misery feeds the Dark Side.

I for one am tired of the empire era. It's like we're frozen in time.
I’d imagine the Empire tax collection bureau was hilariously over-militarized to fund the forever war-economy. Either that, or Palpatine was minting more credits each year than the entire population of Coruscant.
Maybe both happened.
If you read the "new" Thrawn book, you'll kind of get a glimpse of the way things ran. Lots of corruption and confiscation of assets.
They had several tax collecting agencies, bureaus and ministries for taxation.
The Empire was not on a war economy, though.
I always read these comments saying Palpatine was an idiot for how he ran the Empire, but he WANTED constant conflict, it was his Sith mantra. He knew the downside of Tarkins policies but he delighted in the fear and other dark side emotions it invoked in the galaxy.

Banks actually ASK you to pay them for safekeeping your money instead of giving you an interest. It has not been long since banks got rid of floppy disks, and the National Diet (Parliament) is citing South Korea and Germany for digitized governance which Japan is sorely lacking (a land of faxes and stamps, which they tried to improve with establishing a new wing in the administration called the Digital Agency... run by meetings).

He really should not talk about having a "high GDP per capita" when he comes from the perspective of America, which has double Japan's GDP per capita. Proves he did not do any research. Singapore's has it slightly higher than America, but that's typical for very small countries where big corporation's GDP takes a bigger portion of the national production than larger countries.

It takes a long time to build an aircraft carrier and yet the Empire was able to put out over 25,000 ISDs in less than 18 years (not to mention building one and a half Death Stars as countless-seeming gigantic bases)
Maybe that's what I'm curious about from the lore.

The empire could have lasted 1000 years if you got rid of plot armor in the original trilogy
And the Death Star. It was just a waste of money and resources. It destroys more resources and money than it makes or conquers.
@@isimperialist furthermore, it failed that its primary objective making it, so no planet wants to rebel because they decided to destroy Alderan which which is the most culturally influential planet, and might be the second most important planet in the galaxy
Nah, even whithout the Rebels Plot Armor, it would have ended on the account on How Unecessary Evil, Opressive It was mixed with so Much Incompentence at all levels. If Just might have taken a few more decades to At Almost Impossibly 1 or 2 centuries.
The Star Wars imperial Sourcebook released in the 80's did a great job of this for legends. Canon has been pretty thin on that kind of thing
The Galactic Empire lacked freedom, peace & justice, three of the "Skywalker Core Four" to fourth being security.
The Empire could have been great if it was fundamentally different and not built by and for psychopaths and sociopaths.
So you're telling me that Sith Empires can't work? Shock and scandal!
Yes, this is what this video boils down to.
He’s right, the empire caused its own destruction. If they worked together with the planners rather than oppress them the empire would have lasted longer. But also each planet would have had more power to get rid of palpatine.
1,000 year empire would be a scary thought for sure.
In real life people barely survived for 12 years of Nazi rule, imagine if it was for 1,000 years.

According to Machiavelli being neutral is a bad idea, staying neutral when two others are fighting would lead to defeat for the neutral party, as they have left themselves in a position to be hated by both sides.
that advice does not take into account being efectively a bank country. neutrality makes banks more reliable, thus its good for a bank country.

The Empire should have been more like Rome as basically every successful Empire strives to be. If an area is free from resistance, it can basically do anything as long as it pays taxes. Resistance is met on a sliding scale. A graffiti artist would get a slap on the wrist from locals. A violent crime would mean prison or worse. An open rebellion would mean a response from the Roman army. The more damage done during the rebellion, the worse the punishment and longer the occupation to rebuild would last. One of the few times Rome pulled a Death Star was on Carthage and that was due to a war that NEARLY wiped out Rome.

The Empire should’ve just looked to the Roman and later Eastern Roman Empire for inspiration.

Ultimately was an extension of Palpatine's drive. He wanted everyone at each other's throats while perusing his quest for immortality and power.
Excellent argument. However, you overlook one key point. Sidious grew stronger in the Force through other people’s pain, fear and suffering. Therefore, he needed to make people suffer. So the large military and the Tarkin Doctrine were necessities for Sidious.
I’ve grown to like your perspective more and more
Actually, the Empire could've won if one of two things happened.
I mean yes and no. But also lol the Empire or better said Vader and Sidious themself had Plot Armour for days.

Good points. I think in Legends, Palpatine planned to replace all government officials with Dark Side Adepts eventually.

I my head cannon I always felt the sith needed upheaval and suffering in the galaxy to draw their power from. A peaceful galaxy would weaken the Emporer.
Or perhaps Sith get replaced. Over time Empire develops into constitutional monarchy 😊 Or confederacy.
And there is limited freedom of speech in Singapore with the reason to prevent disharmony especially among the different races living there.
The people who fail to realize this are the same people who rant and rave about diversity being needed lmfao

I think a better story is the empire after termination of their esoteric leaders became a secular entity that ruled the galaxy for 1000 years. Rebel leaders were offered place in the noble ranks thus dissolved this opposition.
