    I'm an old prog-rock fan but I fell for Lana's voice and music since I first heard Blue Jean from her. The song seemed without age. I thought I missed a great singer from the 60' or 70' and then discovered that the song just came out. I follow her since, but don't forget to listen to Gentle Giant or Yes 😀

    The very first time I heard Video Games on the radio, I went out and bought it, I instantly fell in love with her voice. I remember it was pushed around that she couldn't sing live, and it was almost as though she had to prove herself - I thought that was quite mean.

    • @lethybridtheorygolucastheo2191
      @lethybridtheorygolucastheo2191 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      And what's great about it is this came at a time when mainstream music was being flooded with trashy club boom e.g Pitbull, Flo Rida etc (In my eyes the equivalent of hair metal in the 1980s) and that album opened the door for artists such as Lorde, Halsey, Billie Eilish to get popular. This whole alt pop wave Del Rey spearheaded imo was the equivalent of Grunge in the 1990s.

    • @theopinson3851
      @theopinson3851 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I think she was having monitoring issues and couldn’t hear herself on one of her first appearances. People don’t get that this shit happens to everyone at some point, and she was admittedly somewhat new to performing live. Unfortunately that reputation sticks even though she had plenty of amazing performances even early on (there’s a live version of Video Games that was one of her first performances and absolutely incredible).

    A singer who was blessed with an enviably beautiful tone. Her low notes are quite good and she is further blessed in some ways for having lower and register timbres that are rather distinct tonally, yet each undeniably unique. This performance, like many of her early ones, is shaky in places mostly because she is singing too low for her range. It is very difficult for a female voice to project well that far down and even at this juncture in her career it is clear the voice blooms in its mid range and operative head voice. Nowadays it is rare to see her stay down low for such long periods (though she is capable of it), presumably because she's come to embrace her natural tessitura. Overall, though, a fantastic if not particularly dexterous voice paired with exceptional songwriting abilities. Very underrated indeed!

    Making Out, Push Me Down, and Summertime Sadness are some of the songs where she sings parts of the song with a pinched nose sound. Like she has a cold. She no longer adds this on her songs but it's a sound that's very unique and very Lana, that first caught my ears.

Lana Del Rey's "Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Bvd" is a hauntingly beautiful ballad that showcases her signature storytelling style and mesmerizing vocals. And if you're looking for something a bit more experimental, Melanie Martinez's "Portals" is an otherworldly track that will transport you to another dimension with its eerie soundscapes and captivating lyrics.

    So many of the melodies these days are what I would class as 'featureless'...this song is a case in point. It taxis along but never gets off the runway. Similarly more powerful songs are like jets that roar around the airport making a lot of noise but never taking off. I often find myself responding far more to your expressive and interesting reactions than I do to the songs you are reacting to.

    Hi there Beth I have a suggestion. Considering you just played Lana Del Rey well I have an even better singer; if not the best.
    She is the mistress of dreampop, Liz Fraser. A fantastic singer who makes up the words to the songs. Indeed the voice is beautiful but the lyrics are even more crucial as she has invented a style of wording that came about because she couldn't come up with any lyrics for one of their albums, Treasure, their masterpiece.
    So she invented her own vocabulary of jumbled and non sensical lyrics. The result is a very special one. Listen to the songs from Treasure their album released in 1984.
    It is from the airy, grungy guitar work period of the 80's.
    A stunning album of infinite dreams and stories. A woman seeking something that no-one knows what.
    The band is called the Cocteau Twins. She is the singer and she plays with her husband, Robin Guthrie who she is now divorced from.
    This is a long missive but I recommend this highly. Take a listen now please. Treasure. The 1984 album. Brilliant 😮

    Her singing technique lacks a lot of things.
    But that's not always what it's about. Her songs give a very distinct mood and vibe, which I like.
    And her voice has a nice general sound, very moody and emotional. And instantly recognizable.
