      My babysitter use to come over to MY home and I was the one who owned the Sega Master System. LOL. She use to play Double Dragon with me A LOT (Double Dragon on Sega Master System can be played by two players at the same time. It was a great two player team-up game). Rocky was another game we played together (Rocky has a two player mode where player 1 plays as Rocky and player 2 can play as any of the three opponents: Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang (who I always called Mr.T) and Ivan Drago, A.K.A: "Mister I will break you" as my babysitter called him. LOL). Rocky on Sega Master System is actually pretty fun as a two player game.
      We also played Pro-Wrestling on Sega Master System together and fought each other since that game has a two player versus mode. Most of the time I would play as the Great Maskmen (who were homages to real hall of fame wrestlers known as Mil Mascaras and Dos Caras) and she would mostly play as the Mad Soldiers (who were homages to real hall of fame wrestlers known as The Legion of Doom / Hawk & Animal: The Road Warriors). That game was really good as a two player versus game.
      Time Soldiers was another Sega Master System game (similar to Ikari Warriors, but better) which had a two player mode where we teamed up together. We would beat the prehistoric and ancient Rome and World War 2 levels together. We both made it together as far as the beginning of the Future World before the enemies would annihilate us. LOL. We also played Great Baseball together (which was another game which played great as a two player game. We would always try out different teams against each other). She liked baseball at the time and so did I.
      She also helped me level up on YS: The Vanished Omens (YS: Book 1 on Sega Master System. It's a one player only action RPG, but she helped me level up my character in between the main parts of the game. She would have Aron / Adol run around and kill enemies to increase my levels and then hand the controller back to me when I had to go through the main parts of the game. However, she helped me out greatly when it came to navigation (like in the cave), especially when I had to go through the tower since I would easily get lost and she would help me find my way through. Finally, the one game we both HATED was "My Hero" on Sega Master System. We would both take turns playing "My Hero" only for both of us to get extremely frustrated by this crappy game. LOL. It was one of those games with a "FAKE two player mode" (one of those games where each player takes their turn after the other player dies but you can't play together). I think the farthest we made it was the beginning of the third level before we were both killed. We both HATED "My Hero". LOL.

    The fun in Spy vs. Spy is the traps you can plant. Despite both players seeing the same screen, this really works well and is what makes the game fun. Even better on the harder level. On the easy ones the traps don't matter as much, but *can* when used right.

    This video must have taken a long time to make, but in return this has to be in my opinion the best TH-cam video about the games on the Sega Master System because of that. I did know that the US had way less games for the Master System than the EU, and that became very clear watching this video. Only the first 8 bit Sonic entry available, Castle of Illusion but not the impressive sequel Land of Illusion, no Bubble Bobble (the Master System version is by many regarded the best home console release of that game), no Tom & Jerry or Submarine Attack, no Wonder Boy in Monster World (8 bit conversion of the Genesis game) and so on. I live in Europe, and the Sega Master System was my very first gaming console.

      I think the speed, lighting, and quantity of visuals are very important to consider. I got fairly overwhelmed playing Sonic 2 the other day (but I still enjoyed it). My point is that I am sure there are slow-paced, non-flashy modern games if overstimulation is a concern. If not, I can invite myself to piss off.

      Not to mention, the Sega made Asterisk and Obelisk games...they're so much better than their 16-bit counterparts....and the 8-bit Core one.
      But Tonka sold the Master System here, as bad as Mattel sold the NES over on your side of the pond. I saw more people with Atari 7800 consoles, despite the 2600 quality sound. Just the box art alone made the Master System look like a rip-off.
      Assuming you could find it at all.
      Sega took over at the last minute, hyped up Sonic and Golden Axe so they could hold their heads high in defeat...and then they were gone.

    As a big SMS enthusiast, this video absolutely rocks, cool to hear your take on these games. Like any system, the SMS has some really bad games, but there are many super stellar games on here for the time, and a bunch that are still fun to play today.
    Yes Penguin Land is a puzzle game. It's definitely one of my favorite games on here (top 20). But you have to like puzzle games.
    Psycho Fox has momentum issues in the controls but once you get used to it it's a pretty cool game.
    Aztec Adventure is a quirky, overlooked action/adventure game. The bribing mechanic doesn't really work and I think this is where some people stop playing, but you don't have to use this mechanic at all and then it's just a challenging overhead action game that takes some perseverance.

    Well for sure you did miss many good games of the SMS in the USA back then.

    Another amazing video Joe! Game Sack should easily have at the very least 1 million subscribers but for some reason people would rather watch crap over high quality informative videos. A video I would really enjoy seeing is a review of every PS1 game released in the US. Of course I realize that is basically impossible seeing how there are someone around 1,278 US PS1 games. Even at 20 seconds per review that would end up being over 7 hours of video! Not to mention the work of capturing footage from each of the games. I had an idea to make a youtube series where I'd randomly pick games from the NTSC PS1 release list and review a new one every day until I got through them all. I still would kind of like to do it but I'd most likely get 1,000 views per video at best. Probably more like 150! It would be fun but idk.

      In general the SMS looks good but the palette is awfully saturated and the best looking games are on the NES when the graphics made the most out of the system, for example Kirby's Adventure

    • @ostiariusalpha
      @ostiariusalpha 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Top tier games on the NES, such as Ninja Gaiden II, Kirby, or Bucky O'Hare, had graphical effects that put the Master System to shame. Not that the SMS couldn't do similar effects, but sadly, no one ever made as much effort to actually put them to use there.

    • @ostiariusalpha
      @ostiariusalpha 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@monolyth421 There is a reciprocal complaint against the NES for is desaturated color palette. It's kind of silly either way, since both systems use CRT monitors, and any decent set should be able to adjust its saturation to your personal preference.

  • @ShanetheFreestyler

    For the advantages the Master System had over the NES, it amazes me how Sega's own ports of Alien Syndrome and Fantasy Zone are actually inferior to the NES(!?) ports from Sunsoft.
    The NES version of Alien Syndrome was truer to the arcade original with 8-way scrolling and 2-player co-op instead of being single player only and having flip screen scrolling like on Master System. At least the Master System version had FM sound... if you lived in Japan and had the FM module...
    As for Fantasy Zone, there were actually TWO versions for Nintendo's 8-bit: The Sunsoft one released on Famicom, and the one Tengen gave us developed by Pixel rather than the Sunsoft one like they did with Alien Syndrome and After Burner... huh... At least both had the radar the Master System version lacked. They weren't as colorful as the SMS version, (we are talking NES after all,) but I'd play those versions for being more arcade accurate.
    Since this would become an even longer comment if I talked about all the SMS games I've played than it already is, I'll only talk about one more: GHOSTBUSTERS! Hands down, better than NES. Well, pretty much ALL versions are better, even the Atari VCS version my cousin had that I grew up with! But definitely, the SMS version _beats them all!_ Better gameplay, better shop, better ghostbusting, a stair climb stage that _isn't_ hair-pullingly hard with thumb-blistering button mashing, and a more satisfying battle against ~Gozer~ Gorza!
    The only thing it shares in common with the NES version is a slightly Engrishy ending: "CONGRATULATIONS!" (Spelled correctly, at least) "We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You have saved the city and will go down in history as the hero..." (Hero? Aren't there more than one ghostbuster in this game?) "...who annihilated *Gorza,* the God of Destruction." (Wait, "GORZA"!? Not "GOZER"?) "For your gallant effort, you have earned $5000." (Gee, what a handsome reward for *SAVING THE CITY AND POSSIBLY THE WORLD!* Thanks!) "Upon awaking from a deep slumber, Gorza attempted to destroy our great metropolis, however...." (I take it we're not in New York, this doesn't sound anything like what a New Yorker would say...) "You crushed his vicious plan and stopped him once and for all." (Him? Wasn't Gozer a woman in the movie? I mean, sure, Gozer can take whatever form they want, but okay.) "You have thus restored peace and order to our beloved city. THE END"
    Okay, considerably less Engrishy and memorable than "CONGRATURATION !!! YOU HAVE COMPLETED A GREAT GAME . AND PROOVED THE JUSTICE OF OUR CULTURE . NOW GO AND REST OUR HEROES !", but it's still rather corny and misspells the name of the main villain.
    Okay, this has become more "wall of text-y" than I intended, and that's all I have to say about that.
