    19 or 20. Give your self a break after high school and make sure it's what you want. I came in at 19, no regrets.

      I have a B.A. and getting my M.A. in August, but I'm thinking of going in as enlisted and working my way up to officer. Either Air Force of Navy.

      you can become an officer through enlistment. there is something called a chief warrant officer that can only be obtained by ascending through the enlisted ranks

    I went in at at 25 and was one of the older guys in boot camp and that was the case until I got out into the fleet. I had gone to college first. I didn't like the jobs I got out of college and had a hard time dealing with 9 to 5. So I joined the Navy with the intent of eventually applying to OCS.I got tons of technical training in the Navy. I liked it but the civilian world again became appealing to me. So I did 6 years mostly at sea. Turned down shore duty and a $40k bonus to take a civilian job at a Fortune 500 tech company. It was easy to do with my Navy tech skills and excellent Navy job evaluations and with a degree in hand I was set.In summary, in many situations being a little older is good in the military. Just make sure that your time spent is spent wisely. Get all of the training and education that you can. Work for top job evals and reviews. I nailed a perfect 4.0 everytime in the Navy and now I do the same in the civilian world.

    Just turned 23, thinking about joining. I thought about joining when I was around 18-19 but backed out. I felt like it was a burden. My mind was worried about my friends and all kinds of nonsense. I was still a kid. As you get older reality settles in and you start to feel the struggle. I see alot of kids joining and their still in that mind set and it seems like their just worried about getting out. Something to think about. When your a little older I think you would take more advantage. By doing that you would learn more which you can take back to your civilian life if you choose.

    Yeah man, I'm 22 now and joining. I personally love going in a little older because I feel like I have more experience, and the whole process feels much less intimidating as a young adult than if I were still in my late teens. He's right about that free education. It's legit. Great video, Yoon

      +Rachel Nilsen 22 here, i heard joining www.njrotc.navy.mil/host_schools.html NJROTC will get you automatically in E3
      its for highschool students primarily but im in college & hope to take it before joining & bootcamp & all that jazz
      hope it helps u both who are 22

    • @donavonwilbanks130
      @donavonwilbanks130 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ms&mrreckoning I believe that you have to go through the ROTC program in college, the JORTC is for juniors only (i.e., highschool students). ROTC is tricky to apply for. I looked into it. But if you find a way to do either JROTC or ROTC definitely do it if you have time. They are both multi-year programs I believe, so it is something that takes time, but if you can do it you should (:

    The one advantage, of waiting at least a year after finishing high school to enlist is life experience even if just a year. Many who join the military just out of high school, think they made a mistake, because life is better on the outside, or the "grass is greener on the other side of the fence". Those who wait for at least a year, have no such illusions.

    I think the age you should join is if you seem mature for whatever age you are. I joined at 22 and I had no problem dealing with it.
    I couldn't handle it right out of high school and was glad I waited.

    Good advice!! I am joining the Army Reserves at age 30 I wish i have had the chance to join in my early 20s but i did not have the chance to do so at the time due to my legal status, just obtained my green card last year at age 29 and for me its a dream coming to reality i cant wait for all the opportunities and experiences that this will bring, i remember applying when i was 19 and receiving a letter of rejection due to my legal status at the time.. but i never lost hope, and i do believe that at my age i have experience many life situations and have gone thru some hard times that have help me mature and appreciate opportunities to the fullest. I think age is just that, and what really matters is your drive and determination, good luck.

    I really enjoyed your insight on knowing when to join the Navy. I joined right out of high school at 18. I'm getting close to retirement (08) and will be retiring when I'm 38. While in, I was able to get my Navy COOL certifications, USMAP certs, Associates and Bachelors Degrees all paid for starting when I first came in. It took me almost 15 years to get my BA degree because of the constant deployments, getting married, having kids, unpredictability and nature of my job. I picked up real quick from E-1 to E-6 in 8 years, scoring perfect 80s on my advancement exams, however I got stuck at E-6, probably will retire as an E-6 too which isn't a bad thing and the pay is better than livable. With my technical expertise, I'm pretty much locked in for a good job when I get out. If money is what drives you, go officer. At your rating, you'll be able to make Chief with your eyes closed as long as you take on the hard jobs outside of your job.

    Right after high school is the best way to join (but that's just my opinion), if you are mature about it (which is a big IF for most 18-19 year olds). Life experience as a civilian is a good point, however, to make in appreciating the things that the Navy provides, which you mentioned. Most people that I knew on the ship that were around my age (18-19ish) did not maximize on the college opportunities like the SOCNAV (or NAVSOC agreement, I forgot which), but a few of us actually did including myself and it was worth getting the A.S. degree in my first term of service before I decided to get out and go a four year university while being inactive.

    Sister and Friends tell me I should join right after high school while in college because they pay for college. I'm still a bit confused. If I have scholarships and money to pay for college I may reconsider going into the military. When I first told my sister about joining the military she told me she doesn't think the military is for me.. But I'm still considering, obviously. Really want to do this. You'll never know for sure if it's for you unless you go in and try it. I'm not letting that bring me down because I know if I listen to the few people that were against it, I may dislike them (for that) because I didn't get to do what I wanted. Well now, my family supports whatever decision I make which is really helpful to me. I think I may join right after highschool with my parents permission because I will not be 18, thanks for your videos, wish me luck!

If you live in California you know that's not enough at my age to afford car insurance, health insurance, dental insurance, car payments, a house payment, and other monthly expenses. Sounds like a lot but not really for two people while she is going to school. Sadly, because "I make too much" which is complete bs... she doesn't qualify for help with school so I have to pay it and if we can't afford it then she can't go to school :(. Spend as much time with family as possible. Sell some of your belonging, save money, and start reading books.

      Me too man!!!!!,I'm 30 and signed my navy contract last week,shipping out June 7 and turning 31 at boot camp,not really worry since I work out and I'm in a good shape,wish you the best of luck and work hard to scrape those extra pounds out of you.

    • @yordan826

      +linkavitchC I just graduated 2 weeks ago and wasn't as bad as I though it was gonna be,if you are in good shape and work out regularly you should be fine,the mayor part of bootcamp is getting used to the correction and following instructions exactly as they give them to you,they want you to listen and follow orders if you think you can do that you'll be all right,bootcamp works in a way of molding your brain to the military customs and lifestyle and making you abide by them,for some people is a shock the first week or two they start,forget about phone,laptop,tv,videogames or privacy for 2 months you gonna be isolated from the world living,eating and showering with 80 more people during that time,it can get rough at times but think this way if many people can do it(I did it easily)so can you,good luck.

    If you get a bachelor's degree before joining the military, can't you be an officer? Isn't being an officer better than enlisting? Thanks for the video.

    • @mike9077
      @mike9077 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has to be a degree in something useful but yes you can. Officer is way better than enlisted. Officer life is nice.

    • @madelinewhite9501
      @madelinewhite9501 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I have found officer positions that work with my degree. If I do join, that's the way I'll go. Thanks for answering my question

      Would Biology be useless? I think only tech degrees would be really useful.

    • @madelinewhite9501
      @madelinewhite9501 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you can look on the branch's website to see what degrees do certain officers require. I was able to find business degree officers, as well as officers requiring any bachelor's for the air force.

    don't u think it's better if someone joins the navy straight out of high school so they can get free college instead of paying

    • @MrYoonKim
      @MrYoonKim  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Abin, in my opinion it would really depend. I would say if Navy is a career path then going to college first to join officer would be better. If not, then yes joining out of HS would possibly be a good choice.

    I'm 24 , about to join this year as an officer.and up to which post I can reach if I would do good in each and every training.?

    • @MrYoonKim
      @MrYoonKim  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello,
      The military offers diverse training and challenges. You will face tasks you are great at and some tasks you will face difficulties. If i understand your question right you are wondering if there is a video that explains the training. I can only speak of enlisted side of things and not commissioned. However, the concept I believe is relatively the same.
