Onward 1.7 was definitely better in some respects and Im a hardcore lover of the game, but we're lying if we pretend that Quest Crossplay didn't save the game. It was DEAD pre 1.8...
Played with you before Viper. KillerPigeon in game. The audio in is what kills the immersion after 1.7. It all was a downgrade but that audio. damn!! lol
Well I'm sure they appreciate that :) But it is what it is and this was to sell more Onward so the company can keep going, it sucks but the company going broke and there being no more Onward every would be worse 🤷🏻♂️
@@EyesonVR I mean id rather have onward for everyone then no onward at all so. Also good work on the video man, I liked the way you laid things out. I like when videos feel satisfying and complete.
Thats pretty respectable, see alot of PC players blame the Quest but don't get that people on Quest didn't mean for or even know this was going to happen.
Honestly they should've taken the Facebook money and worked on a sequel, instead of screwing over the entirety of their existing playerbase just to sell out to Oculus It's indicative of the VR industry as a whole. Facebook gets more people into the VR platform, but they do it by downgrading and shitting on everything they can get their hands on. Like without them VR would move forward more slowly, but would move in a much better direction.
theres nothing like playing suburbia in onward v1.7 at night with nvg and seeing enemy flashlights reflecting through the hedge leaves and creating beams, then being able to see through the hedge and shoot the enemies. its a great feeling.
The shit thing is, for those that supported and bought the game on PC, again SUPPORTED the developers, they got a slap on the face. At MINIMUM should've been given an Oculus key for a free download since it was rebuilt for quest. This was my absolute favourite and go to game, then everything turned upside down and I feel like it's literally a phone game but in VR. Graphics were better, the animations sounds etc all week better. On top of it, you could play it realistically, drop an enemy, and loot their gun, ammo and grenades. Now it all disappears, much like the appeal for this game. Just frustrated.
@@MauricioPlaza your support does help Zuckerberg pay his bills, tho. Keep shilling for shitty companies making profits from shitty products and shitty business strategies, so we'll have Facebook monopoly in vr industry in no time. Bruh, capitalists don't need your compassion, but they would certainly be amused by your shills.
@@EyesonVR Yeah but I already got like 900h worth of exercise with proper onward. For 25€ that's a great deal. It would be superb without the 1.8 hassle.
Seems to me like we need a happy medium. The maps are probably permanently going to be stripped a bit but I don't see why client-side things like the graphics, effects, and sounds have to be gimped to the quest version. Just like in 2d PC games there should be no reason why we can't have graphics and sound settings we can crank up. This obviously includes textures and grass. With graphics options we can have our cake (the huge player base) and eat it too (graphics options for the pc version). As long as gunplay and hitboxes are the same on players in objects I don't see the issue.
Great suggestion Krasniye! That would be great to have, i also heard a suggestion of a toggle switch, is cross plays the problem give people on PC the ability to choose to play with Quest players (downgrading graphics, sounds etc) or to just play PC VS PC and you can play 1.7 style visually.
@@EyesonVR we'd have the reflection mapping on the AK5C at least... And they might have been able to fix the bugs, instead of adding more that they haven't been able to fix in the entire year since 1.8 released...

Yea for those of us who were there since 2016/2017 it was like going from a PC game with a mature player base to a cell phone game flooded with children.
11:30 the hedges you see there are actually completely transparent in the sense you can look through the gaps, not so easily done on a pancake game, but with vr you have two eyes with depth perception. a good example of that is in your car with raindrops all over the windscreen. or a mesh door etc. should be very hard to look through, but you can use depth perception to focus behind the windscreen, mesh door and look past them. which is awesome in onward, its not super easy, but you can look through the hedges and spot enemies, then either shoot them through the hedges or time it perfectly to get them the second the step out. cant do that in v1.8, that sort of thing effect the tactics/ gameplay. its not just graphics and audio, the game is different. its very subtle. but it is there.
See Socks where were you when i posted in the 1.7 discord for info on this version 2 weeks ago? 😂 I'm clearly so used to the 1.8 version on PC and Quest that i never even considered being able to see through the bushes as they are just a write of in 1.8 I should have known better from Onward 1.7
Haha I don't know about that but saturation on level is higher, like suburbia has quite a green tinge to it, not sure why I assume it's the lighting system 🤷🏻♂️
Glad they brought back the abandoned map day and night. Shows they are listening to the community but sometimes they just have to make compromises to make everyone happy
i didnt realize how bad it actually was. i hope there is a possibility that they can get a differrent team to update the 1.7 PC version, whether it be by them giving a modding team the source code or whatever
Played Onward from about 2016 and this is pretty spot on. Only thing is everyone hated Jungle (cause you would just hide in a bush and die) and Abandoned was also despised cause it was way toooooo huge. Thanks for posting this video. I have joined the Discord which I had no idea about!
true, although i still liked both those maps in pve, just not too often. abandoned you wanted all 4 player slots filled and a good team that communicates. you often end up hunting down the last ai though forever which is annoying.
Some people those were their least favorite maps and some it was their favorite. It depends what kind of player you were. On Jungle and Abandoned it forced you to slow down and think about every move you made. Enemies could literally be anywhere and you had to be prepared. It didn't matter if you were attacking or defending, there was a lot of strategy going on and the maps gave you a lot to work with.
I wasnt aware Onward ever downgraded in the first place, I recently got into vr and picked up the quest 2 as it was one of the cheaper and wireless options... this made me really sad that one of my favorite games is apparently a shadow of its former self. Im particularly jealous of the audio differences.
It's a huge shame isn't it? I felt the same way when I found out as I was the same as you, got the Quest 2 because its cheaper and more accessible but learned what I was playing wasn't what it should be, Onward will get better over time hopefully and go back to its former glory
@@EyesonVR I still don't like that lol but the game got so many players overnight basically it's crazy I remember the servers being like 5 page or less to 14-20 instantly almost
@@Sh4dovv Ok .. I just don't understand how making something worse would make you gain players .. but maybe it's just the world we live in today where most things go against the norm anyways ..
great video, still enjoy seeing the 1.7 version, i started on the quest and ive tried the 1.8pc version but never had the pc specs to fully go to pcvr, now that i have ive gone to onward vr 1.8 on pc since its still way better then the quest, sadly for anyone wondering the 1.7 servers have been closed on 27/10/2022
I have only played 1.8 and had no idea of the existence of the completely different version 1.7. It looks so much better! I am definitely going to try it out.
As a Quest 2 user, I feel so bad for the PCVR users. It’s a good thing for me and other PCVR users that we all have PC’s, and we can still play 1.7, in a way.
Why is Onward on the Oculus Quest still based off of the Quest 1 version and not Quest 2? Q2 can handle way more and would help the PCVR users not be downgraded so so much!
It is bases off the Q2 version now to be fair as they did a Q2 upgrade but that upgrade is still not a good as the Q2 can handle that I can agree with for sure
I’ve been playing Onward for 5 years and 1.7 was outstanding BUT the performance was not that strong. We would have many crashes, frame drops, bugs, and the loading time in lobby’s and the game itself were forever. To start my game it took average 10 minutes. Also as a competitive player we only had around 50 teams competing and at most 1 competitive lobby open a week. Now with 1.8 we have way better performance, more players playing, over 200 competitive teams, at least 5 competitive lobby’s a day if not more. And a larger community of people to enjoy this game with. I’m glad we made the transition to 1.8 at the cost of graphics. But with technology improving for headsets like the quest, we will be back at 1.7 graphics in no time.
@@luckyshot5135 im comfortable because i know its temporary. The devs dont downgrade graphics to make the game look better or the players happier. They only downgrade it to make the game work for everyone.
As a quest user, if I knew this was the case, man I'd want it to have a standalone instead of whatever this is. It'll give people a reason to spend money they save on a PC that can run the "good stuff" But then again I dig the wireless stuff. Even if it runs like a gaming phone pretty much
Well that's the trade off isn't it, its get the 'good stuff' wired of be free and play mobile visual games, but things like virtual desktop and air link can cure this but i get its more about having or affording a VR ready PC in the first place.
@@EyesonVR yep, we basically spent all this money on our VR rigs to be capped at $500 worth of hardware and a game that spontaneously aged 10 years after you purchased it. Very disappointing but as a former game dev myself I know it's sometimes more complicated than we can observe from our chairs. I was about to buy this game and try it out but that was a massive downgrade. Thanks for reviewing
Hey getstuk! Your absolutely right about it often being more complicated than what we see, iv also worked in the game dev sector and there's often plenty that happens behind the scenes that people don't ever get told as I'm sure you know. We can only speculate speculate take what evidence is out there but I think we are all united in saying the level of downgrade was quite extensive maybe more than it needed to be. Thanks for Watching 😀
Facebook probably stipulated that they not have a separate version in the deal, if I had to guess. Like they've seen how much better Pavlov is with a separate version, unless they just really hated the remaining community, I doubt they would've chosen to downgrade all of the players for no reason.
Oh of course not, the devs were in a tight spot from what I know in terms of money and playerbase, So if someone like Facebook or Google or whoever comes knocking saying here's basically unlimited money and a whole.bunch for us to buy the studio your gonna take it, pride be dammed its not worth loosing your game and job over.
Love when I read posts that say "Don't worry guys it's fixed now!" LMAO @11:24 The glass on the cars have actual reflections.. Now when I see comments saying "Look what they did to my baby😢" I understand now 😟
17:43 its supposed to be pitch black out in the middle of nowhere in a milsim. thats why there are nvg or a torch available. i admit i have been in countless games where you spawn and you hear someone swear and then apologize for forgetting nvg, lol. you cant see anything. i guess if someone else has a torch you can sort of go with them. sort of. people often just decide to forgo that round and suicide out to equip goggles. tbf though, that night lighting does actually look surprisingly good in 1.8
Oh, that and keeping lights on in buildings in a firefight? That's asking to be shot. Oh what's that? Someone in a window, silhouetted against the light interior? Nice easy kill, don't mind if I do...
@@TheBaldrickk yeah, i hate the nvg in 1.8 not only does it not look right etc but the fov restriction is just extreme. we already see the fov through vr headsets which are already restricted fovs. and modern nvg have evolved to have pretty good fov. i think the v1.7 implementation was perfect. same with the suppression mechanics. narrowing the fov is awful in 1.8, i preferred the screen darkening technique in 1.7
Well said Socks, that's why I think lighting the interiors so much was purely a gameplay choice for people like me and as you rightly point out end up forgetting their NVG, It DOES look good though right?
Played 1.7 and its so much more fun/intense but 1.8 has more players (of course more Kids without tac-skills aswell😒) . There is almost no time without runnin games...
I think VR is just at a point where everyone jumps into everything including kids, games will come out that separate themselves to older audiences eventually:)
The graphical and prop differences are rooted from quest users access to the servers now. They had to tone the maps and game graphics down a bit to accommodate. But like Alter said there is a lot more players now because of it.
And thats the price of business, while I hate it as a business decision downpour did good, at the end of the day having no player base means the game wouldn't have even got past 1.7 anyway because it wouldn't be monetarily viable. Business and money makes the world go round, it sucks but that's it we just have to hope games like Onward 2 get it right
The problem is that the quest can't even handle downgraded versions of things, they had to actively remove a lot of each map to make them quest compatible. High-fidelity PC and quest gameplay are not compatible with each other, which is why other studios didn't attempt to smoosh the two together.
Just came from Soviet's video. As a quest 2 user it is sad to see the PC side get so hard, as the quest can be used as a PCVR headset as well. I personally don't mind the downgrade, as on aware my computer hardware is limited, however the experience shouldn't be hindered for the people who originally bought it. There seems to be so many better solutions in the comment section here that makes me wonder why they decide to sacrifice the PC experience. This game seems good as a quest 2 game, however I would not want to force PC users just because I don't have the hardware to lose quality. It's a real shame to hear.
Soviets video? And I know what you mean if people can suggest better just in the comments of a video then why did this happen? It's all crossplay and seems like it would only run on everything at the visuals and spec of the lowest system the Quest 1 🙁
@@EyesonVR SovietWomble, he is a funny video game channel that just recently did a video on the game. And from what I've seen, it has less features than Pavlov Shack and AimXR. I do hope that even though much time has passed, PC players are able to get the game they paid for back.
This is kind of close to Pavlov, if you want to find Pavlov it is free on Quest just search for it in the store, scroll down to the bottom of the results to 'app lab and you'll find it there 👍😀
I wish they didn't change the graphics, but when the action starts and s*it hits the fan, there is not much time to admire the details (lol). Thanks for the video :)
Can anybody tell me what happened to the supersonic bullet cracks as they pass near you? I remember distinctly being terrified of them but liked it. Did they remove it? Is it in 1.7?
I wish they'd update the game to 1.9 and make some sort of toggleable setting that pops up when you press "play" (kinda like the one that pops up to let you choose between a 32 bit version of a game or a 64 bit version of a game) that lets you choose whether you use PC VR or Oculus Quest. That way, the PC VR players get the Onward they loved back (most likely with frequent updates) and Quest players have their downgrade so they can play the game with the Quest/Quest 2. Personally, I have a Quest 1, but I only do Oculus Link because the games look like absolute shit when you use the standalone feature...
One thing that sucks is the infinitely vast difference between pc VR and stand alone. I am a console player, so the idea of spending thousands of dollars on a pc AND a headset was insane to me. So when the quest came out, I was over joyed. Next thing I know is half of the games I’ve seen online such as H3vr, boneworks, Pavlov, and MANY other games weren’t on the quest. I kinda just accepted that. Then we have games such as onward with cross play. Yeah the graphics aren’t amazing, but for me it’s one of the few things I got. Now I go and see how vastly different it was for pc players and I just feel bad. With the quest being so big, it’d be much better to just make separate versions of the game so people who spend t so much money on pc get what they paid for.
Really well said Blayne! I was exactly the same when I only had my Quest when I realised there were games missing but I didn't care because I was just happy to be in VR and playing, but after seeing what happened on PC so we on Quest could play....I felt bad, like I say in the review Pavlov and Zero Caliber have it right, two different versions of their game one for Quest and one for PC thats the best way to do things right now
The devs have so shamelessly ripped us off. We bought into an early access game based on the direction the devs were taking and the promise of a better game. At the very least, they could have worked on two builds for the game, one for PC and the other for Quest (like Pavlov).
The lack of content updates was killing the game. I guess all that effort went into the Quest port. They should have made a separate version for Quest instead of forcing downgrades on PCVR.
It’s kind of a fair sacrifice. I saw those reviews on 1.7 to 1.8 For a new VR guy like me, we have to be open to allowing as many possible users as we can get. I have a strong PC and will be doing PCVR mainly. Now, Meta will certainly be running better hardware, and for the cheapest as we know… in the future. Quest 3 (Pro version, cuz I’m almost certain they’ll do some shit like that) will likely be able to run just about anything. Onward should continue to do great work, and allow more players to play. As an eSports bull, this is KEY to seeing the “want” for VR to increase, and therefore more investment, more competition, better everything. Sacrifices guys, for a much better gaming future. Now, this raises another question. Will AAA titles do some interesting hardware/subscription eco-system shit? Will indie devs have to capitulate? Hopefully not, because we’re getting great games for those who have the time and money to do so passionately.
I bought my OG Vive a month before this game was released. Super excited and played on launch. The game and community was the best in VR but lost that spark when it was stripped for a cash grab. I still play 1.7 when I do jump in as the audio is unbearable in 1.8. Can only imagine how amazing it would be if the updates improved on 1.7. Oh well.
Wow you've been in it from the word go! Respect to you but it guess this downgrade hit you hardest man :/ Glad you still play 1.7 the guys from the discord and in the community right now are just as you say they used to be, awsome 👍😀 I totally agree improvements on 1.7 would be so good!
@@EyesonVR I remember waiting for launch watching youtube videos on it. i was so amazed!! lol Back then VR was a lot smaller community so you would run into the same people. Its all good I guess. The world runs off of money and putting this on the Quest market was a huge financial gain. I was very hopeful when Dante went to Valve for a bit to work on the game at their facility but that was long ago and now we have Quest. btw I am still using the OG Vive HMD but with Index knuckles. Try out the knuckles if you havent already. peace
I'm off to download 1.7 right now for a hunt . 1.7 and 1.8 both have good and bad points and lightning affects .what I will say is 1.8 sure has the bullet hit little smoke puffs done well .
See thats the thing, 1.7 is superior in alot of ways but it's not perfect and 1.8 does have progression from 1.7 in some aspects. Let me know how you find 1.7! 😀
@@EyesonVR I will should only take a min or two to download to my Pluto machine. Will let you know if I like the ai more in this version and I want to play those maps you showed. I'm off in my own story hunting the predator against another team looking for it lol my imagination.
Awsome definitely let me know! And remember you can take the enemies weapons if you want! I found it helpful to have to primary guns (one I stole from an ememy) and the one I brought into the round, makes you feel safer lol Enjoy hunting the predator!
I understand the port to the quest and it is in theory a good thing because it will give new vr players a good game and impression on VR, but at the other hand I don't understand why they didn't do something like pavlov with it's shack version
What was the most annoying for me is that my PC ran 1.7 completely fine, no issues, lag, frame drops, etc. Then when they updated the game for Quest support, it made my game run like crap... And I've seen other PC players say it happened to them as well...
Even downgrading for Quest gameplay is a net gain IMO. Usually optimization can save a lot (not all) of these features over future updates, but the gameplay and matchmaking size is forever improved.
There is but it's more of a workaround, if you head to the 1.7 discord, link in the description, there's an FAQ section that will guide you through being able to switch between 1.7 and 1.8 easily without re downloading 👍
One thing that you missed with the bots. In 1.8 the bots have a limit to how many can be out at once. If you put 30 bots it spawns in about 8 bots and more spawn in when they are killed. In 1.7 if you put 30 bots they will all spawn in at the beginning of the match. You could theoretically have all 30 bots shooting you at once. Also it's funny you mention how dark Downfall is on 1.7. It has always been the darkest map at night. However update 1.6 of the game they redid the lighting on all maps. On Bazaar for example featured a high contrast between light and shadows. Rather bright but shadows were very dark and defined. This looked visually very good but going into buildings it was a bit to hard to see due to the very dark shadows. The night maps were very dark. Many maps like Suburbia and Tanker were so dark you needed night vision to play them. They both were darker than Downfall is in 1.7. Downfall in 1.6 was very dark and borderline unplayable without night vision. To give you an idea how dark, I remember 1 time I thought I was walking into the darkness until I turned around and noticed a slightly brighter shade of black. I had walked right into the side of a building and didn't even know it. Many people were complaining about the night maps saying they were too dark but I loved it. After about 2 or 3 weeks they updated the game and the only thing the update said was "we upped the lighting on every map". After that many of the night maps were bright enough you could go without night vision and the high contrast between the light and shadows were not as noticable anymore. I'm sure you can go back through the Steam updates for the game and see pictures of what 1.6 used to look like.
Wow that's some great insight thanks Jman! The darkness I did find kind of cool I'd love to have seen all the muzzle flashes in a firefight back in 1.7. Flashlights only would have been really interesting on suburbia
@@EyesonVR If you haven't figured out yet, on 1.7 go into the settings and find the gun shots and change it to realistic. Then turn the volume up loud and go into a game. This will make the gun shots much louder than any other sound in the game. It makes the gun fights really intense.
As a developer myself I think most of these changes are incredibly odd. They could easily have kept most of the features and details for PC users whilst downgrading the visual fidelity for the Quest version. The changes made almost feels like they've swapped engine or lost the rights to the original material/sounds due to a developer leaving etc. It's pretty sad, to be honest. :/
Yeah, the audio downgrade was SO weird to me, considering that's such a key element to a fun FPS and shouldn't really affect anything but maybe the file size.
It definitely will have been the file size but if they are using less detailed textures then they will be a smaller file size so why not keep the audio the same when your saving space else where?
I have Onward on Quest. I also have a PCVR ready PC and play the majority of VR using this. As Onward isn't cross buy, In your opinion is it worth buying the PCVR version? Is there a large enough UK / European player base for 1.7 ? I understand there are Discord groups you can join.
When it comes to 1.7 the community is small and you'll only get a multiplayer PVP game when people are avaliable. In regards to Quest VS PC apart from accessing 1.7 it only comes down to visuals, the PC version looks better thats a fact, both version play the same, have the same maps, weapons etc and it may not be cross buy but it is cross play so witchever version you buy will have the same number of other people playing online at the same time so really it just depends what your preference is.
I watched the entire video waiting for your breakdown of 1.7 vs. 1.8 AI - but it never came! That for me is the crux of the issue... That and no longer being able to go prone. A video specifically on the AI differences would be most welcome!
Yeah I'm sorry about that Spinx this was such a hard one to put together with limited time. But your totally right, 1.7 A.I would be far more tactical, use smoke to cover their advances, flank you, scissor or pincer move you, there were a challenge compared to 1.8 A.I that just stands still and empties mag after mag after mag at you
Wow ive only played 1.8 and from what I heard about the game I was disappointed, but now seeing what 1.7 looked like I can understand why people liked it so much, I think I'm going to try 1.7 now even if its just with bots it looks way better than 1.8
Just wondering I'm new to this VR stuff but if I have my link cable and link my computer and get onward on steam it will be able to go on my oculus quest 2 right? Like install it to my headset from my computer?
Hey bud! I'm afraid if you use a link cable to play PCVR it needs to be plugged into your PC every second your running the game, so if you get Onward on PC and want to play it you have to have your headset plugged in the whole time. If you buy Onward through the Oculus app on your phone or through the Quest store inside your Quest then it will be installed to your headset and there's no cables required. 👍 But fear not! There are ways to play your PCVR games wireless with your Quest 2, look into 'Oculus Air link' or 'Virtual Desktop' these will help you do that, Air link is free and Virtual desktop isn't but in do think Virtual desktop is better, hope this helps 👍😀
That all depends on your budget and what you want more. The way I did it was get a Quest then I got a PC and use the Quest with it, if you want to get to VR the fastest just get a Quest first
Yes and no, IMO what's holding them back is having to have Onward work on the Quest 1, it's limited by its weakest system, if they started with the power of the Quest 2 I think we would be in a better place graphically already, maybe once FB stops supporting the Quest1 we will see real improvements
@@EyesonVR true I think that will happen eventually but I have to admit the lighting on some of the maps look better on 1.8 for example at suburban 1.7 it's just too green so maybe in the future with the more powerful quests we can get the best of both worlds
Oh yeah very true 1.7 had a real saturation thing going on with the colour for some reason, I'm hoping your right about getting the best of both worlds and I think they are trying, I just did a video for Onward beginners with a professional Onward player and when I was capturing footage from the latest 1.8 version there were moments in the map Quarantine where the lighting was looking really really nice! So I like to think progress is being made :)
Without linking or finding people first your basically out of luck, the problem is the player base for 1.7 is much smaller, there's plenty of people and if you post in the discord looking for a game you'll 90% find one right away. But finding a server just by opening the game and looking its a real lucky dip to find a game already going.
Confused a bit after this well put together video comparison. 1.7 1.8 which is on just the Oculus Quest2 I’m on the fence with get it off Steam at the moment because it will depend on whether or not my son and brother can run it on Pc. As for what’s free about it did I miss. I already paid for it on the Oculus store. So is it free on Steam? Thank you for the great videos and thank you for any help you can give me
So 1.7 is only accessible for PC, 1.8 onwards is on PC and Quest. I'd take a look at the reccomended specs on steam to see if your son and brother can play it, I don't think they will have a problem, you can always have them both get it and refund it if needed (you get 2 hours of play time before you aren't allowed to refund a game) As for the free part if you buy Onward on PC you can revert it back to 1.7 for free, I do mention in this video I believe, or at least one of my Onward videos, Onward is cross play (you can own it on PC but be with people useing a Quest in an online match) but it's not cross buy, that means if you buy it on Quest you have to buy it again on Steam. What a rip off am I right? Happy to help and glad you enjoy the videos :)
Under current circumstances it might actually be that the developers are trying to make their game more accessible to gamers with lower end graphics cards. It'd be great if you could do some benchmarks in both versions.
Love your user name! But yeah I think your right i mean its was the best business decision to port the game to Quest, the fastest and highest selling VR headset thats the most easily accessible to the average consumer, they just didn't quite do it right lol, benchmark tests that's noted thanks for the suggestion :)
@@EyesonVR Thanks hehe... if I ever mention how I came up with that YT would probably ban my account (again) LOL. Regarding the versions, I thought there was a different one for the Quest anyway, and that the 1.7 to 1.8 update was meant for PCVR, no? ...I have to ask since I intended to purchase the game, but I'm not really liking the latest changes and would rather wait until they fix those graphics, at least on PCVR.
Oh see now I want to hear the story but I don't want you to get banned...again lol OK so it's a bit of a weird one, the 1.7 and 1.8 in this video are PC only, if you check my channel I have done a 1.8 Quest vs PC aswell so 👍 The 1.8 update was for when Onward launched on the Quest 1, but the PC got that update to witch turned it from what you see here in 1.7 to basically Quest compatible graphics, so the Quest has only ever known version 1.8 and above. If that makes sense?
I started at 1.8 and was oblivious to these changes. I spent hours wondering why I coundnt find the good maps from vids and now I know why. Thank you so much I now see that they ruined the game. I myself started on quest and am pissed that such a shitty headset has such a huge impact on a great game.
Same here! I started on Quest and had no idea what had gone on just what I was told by people, then yeah I found out and I'm glad I could show others. Yeah the Quest totally messed up a whole game right!? I get it from a buissness perspective as I bet the Onwards devs are rolling in money now but still, not the best way to handle this.
Great video. Really appreciate the effort it took to make this one. As a new Quest user myself. I'm too busy drooling over the fact that I'm actually in VR and trying to reload my damn gun, than to even have notice that the graphics may have been better. To be honest it looks great to me. I'm just happy I can actually play it now for longer than half hour without wanting to barf 🤮 😁 By the way I play on PC using Airlink.
Hey Jo! First off thanks so much for your kind words I really appreciate that and I'm glad you enjoyed the video 👍😀 Iv been where you are as I had my Quest 1st and for about a year before a PC that could handle VR and I was the same, I was just happy to be in VR and experiencing this amazing platform. I did a Quest vs PC video on Onward aswell if that's of interest to you aswell In terms of wanting to barf, try and turn on night mode on your Quest things may look a bit orange at first but you get used to it, I found it extended my ability to play 10 fold time wise and headache wise 👍
@@EyesonVR I mess around with TH-cam as well. So I know the effort it takes to make these videos. Especially ones that are quality like yours. I already watched pretty much all your videos 😁. I never knew about the night mode helping. I've had it on pretty much since I've had the Quest. So maybe that helps. And I'm also sucking on a ginger sweet once I'm playing. Thanks for letting me know. Once I can play for over an hour I'll try and take it to multiplayer.
Thanks so much for saying my videos are high quality Jo it means alot Well if that's the case I hope your in the discord! I'm always happy to have people like you around 👍😀 It sucks your having such trouble with VR do you wear glasses at all? Maybe turn down your screens brightness aswell don't have it up on full, apart from that you just need to do a bit more time in VR, maybe find a 360 meditation video on TH-cam in the Quest and sit and relax while in VR and see if that helps you acclimatise better?
For a few minutes, even though I know onward and know what it looked like, I thought I was seeing something from a concept art video, like "here's what this would look like" (cough ubisoft R6S) but no it's what we actually had. Then I see 1.8 and it makes me feel like the game turned into a chinese knockoff of itself. Very sad
So if you can only buy 1 version of onward quest or pc what one would you buy? Same for contractors, pavlo? I seen your other video my god the games look better on pc I’m conflicted I’ll probably buy it for both I’m just waiting for a sale. So after seeing this video did they strip the pc version down “ downgraded the game?”
I would say buy the PC version as it will see better upgrades in the future and looks better now. Contractors is cross buy so it dosnt really matter what platform you buy it on. Pavlov deffo get PC the modding community is massive and it's a bunch of fun! As for if they downgraded the game from 1.7 yes so that it could run on Quest and PC at the same time but PC looks better now, even more so than when I made this video
It depends what you like Sheepism, if your looking for fun, laughs, some fun game mods but not to hard on realisum then go Pavlov, if you want a game that's a bit buggy but realistic as hell go Onward 👍
yeah. and this video is presumably using the latest onward v1.8. imagine how bad it was over a year ago when we went from v1.7 to original v1.8 (which was a lOT worse than current v1.8 - which is still pretty bad). no warning, no apologies, no refunds. people were shocked and pissed. rightfully so.
I’ve got a quest and would be fine with 1.8 but fuck I wish they hadn’t shafted you guys. I wanted the game to continue down 1.7s path, I’d love to be able to eventually experience 1.7 and if 1.9 goes back and they give quest it’s own version, I think I’d get a PC headset just for that
Onward 1.7 was definitely better in some respects and Im a hardcore lover of the game, but we're lying if we pretend that Quest Crossplay didn't save the game. It was DEAD pre 1.8...
Really!? I had no idea! Was it really that dead?
Played with you before Viper. KillerPigeon in game. The audio in is what kills the immersion after 1.7. It all was a downgrade but that audio. damn!! lol
Yeah, the full year of no updates was killing 1.7 and the player base was dropping simply cause the game wasn't getting updated. RIP 1.7
Compressed like hell!
I assume that's because they were working on the Quest version?
As much fun as I’ve been having playing onward on my quest. I can’t help but feel bad for the PC players.
Same here, I had no idea. I feel like if they dropped support for Q1 it would help a lot. And I say that as a Q1 user lmao.
Thats pretty respectable, see alot of PC players blame the Quest but don't get that people on Quest didn't mean for or even know this was going to happen.
Honestly they should've taken the Facebook money and worked on a sequel, instead of screwing over the entirety of their existing playerbase just to sell out to Oculus
It's indicative of the VR industry as a whole. Facebook gets more people into the VR platform, but they do it by downgrading and shitting on everything they can get their hands on. Like without them VR would move forward more slowly, but would move in a much better direction.
I hadn't played onward in a while and thought I was going crazy when I couldn't find AI guns on the floor lol.
Not crazy just kinda cheated out of it I'm afraid 🤷🏻♂️
theres nothing like playing suburbia in onward v1.7 at night with nvg and seeing enemy flashlights reflecting through the hedge leaves and creating beams, then being able to see through the hedge and shoot the enemies. its a great feeling.
Now THATS immersion!
Support dont pay the bills.
@@MauricioPlaza early supporters are the reason this game was continued in the first place

I never played the old version and when playing this Game it feels unfinished, now i see why... shame

Wow as someone who started playing after 1.8 I never knee how much they massacred this game…
I'm just the same as you as I only started to play it when I got a Quest 1 witch was 1.8, bleeding my mind to know!
Is 1.7 based off Mexico? Everything seems more "yellowish" as compared to 1.8
Haha I don't know about that but saturation on level is higher, like suburbia has quite a green tinge to it, not sure why I assume it's the lighting system 🤷🏻♂️
i would say its based of iraq or afghan
Glad they brought back the abandoned map day and night. Shows they are listening to the community but sometimes they just have to make compromises to make everyone happy
I think those compromises are why the new abandoned map isn't 100% like the one in 1.7

Thats great info to know Traiden! Glad you found the discord and get many good games out of it 👍😀
Haha I can see that as being fun but getting annoying real fast 😂
Some people those were their least favorite maps and some it was their favorite. It depends what kind of player you were. On Jungle and Abandoned it forced you to slow down and think about every move you made. Enemies could literally be anywhere and you had to be prepared. It didn't matter if you were attacking or defending, there was a lot of strategy going on and the maps gave you a lot to work with.
Abandoned single player sniper
I miss jungle so much…. Going prone with my 12x on sight lines. Hiding in the foliage and offing players
Oh man that sounds like some real Vietnam stuff right there!
For me it feels like they made them in the wrong order as 1.7 looks way better than 1.8
Yeah It certainly seems like a downgrade not a move forward to 1.8
Well ya that's because they had to make it worse to allow the quest to play it to grow their player base which it definitely did

Awsome! Definitely let me know what you think of it Nicolas 👍
As a Quest 2 user, I feel so bad for the PCVR users. It’s a good thing for me and other PCVR users that we all have PC’s, and we can still play 1.7, in a way.
I'm a Q2 user to and I agree I do feel a bit guilty for people who were with Onward from the beginning
Not anymore
Yep Me Too ! Been waiting for the next one . . Yhanks Rexxy !
Your welcome always happy to help you out mate! 👍😀
The sounds are almost like they decided to change them from the raw sounds to like someone is wearing massive earmuffs
Agreed! I think its just a large amount of compression that's ruined the quality
All very well said mate 👏👍
I fear the opposite, people seem comfortable with this level of graphics. I just hope they never downgrade a game so heavily again.

It'll give people a reason to spend money they save on a PC that can run the "good stuff"
But then again I dig the wireless stuff.
I feel like they disregarded the fact that alot of us quest 2 users, use it for PCVR Via link or Airlink. so downgraded is really unnecessary.

17:43 its supposed to be pitch black out in the middle of nowhere in a milsim. thats why there are nvg or a torch available. i admit i have been in countless games where you spawn and you hear someone swear and then apologize for forgetting nvg, lol. you cant see anything. i guess if someone else has a torch you can sort of go with them. sort of. people often just decide to forgo that round and suicide out to equip goggles.
tbf though, that night lighting does actually look surprisingly good in 1.8
The NVG actually looked good in 1.7 too.
When I've tried 1.8, I've often just gone without because the NV is so awful
Oh, that and keeping lights on in buildings in a firefight? That's asking to be shot.
Oh what's that? Someone in a window, silhouetted against the light interior? Nice easy kill, don't mind if I do...
@@TheBaldrickk yeah, i hate the nvg in 1.8 not only does it not look right etc but the fov restriction is just extreme. we already see the fov through vr headsets which are already restricted fovs. and modern nvg have evolved to have pretty good fov. i think the v1.7 implementation was perfect. same with the suppression mechanics. narrowing the fov is awful in 1.8, i preferred the screen darkening technique in 1.7
@@TheBaldrickk haha
Business and money makes the world go round, it sucks but that's it we just have to hope games like Onward 2 get it right
excellent video dude. absolutely fantastic work.
Thank so much Socks! I appreciate that a lot hope ill see you in the discord 😃 also I'm a big fan ;P
They should just make separate settings for the quest so that they dont have to down grade the game overall.
I completely agree with this!
The problem is that the quest can't even handle downgraded versions of things, they had to actively remove a lot of each map to make them quest compatible. High-fidelity PC and quest gameplay are not compatible with each other, which is why other studios didn't attempt to smoosh the two together.
@@CaeruleanWren or like if you disable crossplay you get better pc maps + AI

The jungle map was awesome for one in the chamber
Man I bet those games were intense!

The sniper in 1.7 is just to good
Wow... it is out of my wishlist as of now !
It's still a good game gamplay wise it's just not what it was visually...or in sound witch is a shame
I was exactly the same when I only had my Quest when I realised there were games missing but I didn't care because I was just happy to be in VR and playing, but after seeing what happened on PC so we on Quest could play....I felt bad, like I say in the review Pavlov and Zero Caliber have it right, two different versions of their game one for Quest and one for PC thats the best way to do things right now
im still upset at the Dev team and not someone like you trying to play lol Glad your in game
Now that the game is owned by facebook onward is doomed :D
The devs have so shamelessly ripped us off. We bought into an early access game based on the direction the devs were taking and the promise of a better game. At the very least, they could have worked on two builds for the game, one for PC and the other for Quest (like Pavlov).
The lack of content updates was killing the game. I guess all that effort went into the Quest port. They should have made a separate version for Quest instead of forcing downgrades on PCVR.
It’s kind of a fair sacrifice. I saw those reviews on 1.7 to 1.8
For a new VR guy like me, we have to be open to allowing as many possible users as we can get.

I found it helpful to have to primary guns (one I stole from an ememy) and the one I brought into the round, makes you feel safer lol
Enjoy hunting the predator!
@@EyesonVR great idea. I will enjoy hunting him run to the ccchhooopppeeerrrrrrrrrr.
Get dooooooooown!
I understand the port to the quest and it is in theory a good thing because it will give new vr players a good game and impression on VR, but at the other hand I don't understand why they didn't do something like pavlov with it's shack version
I couldn't agree more, other games have done this by having two versions separate from each other so why handle it like they did?
Actually seems like it was a terrible thing, just dramatically lowered the quality of the playerbase.
What was the most annoying for me is that my PC ran 1.7 completely fine, no issues, lag, frame drops, etc. Then when they updated the game for Quest support, it made my game run like crap... And I've seen other PC players say it happened to them as well...
That's so weird as iv only seen people say the opposite that they get better frames etc on 1.8
Even downgrading for Quest gameplay is a net gain IMO. Usually optimization can save a lot (not all) of these features over future updates, but the gameplay and matchmaking size is forever improved.
This is sad, I loved those old sounds and those old maps
Your not alone my friends
Wait I’m lost so is 1.7 a new update but we’re counting backwards
No no bud 1.7 was a PAST version of Onward they changed it from that TO 1.8....
do these updates only work on pc and oculus quest 2 because i have the first oculus quest and I dont have different menus or anything
No no version 1.7 is only avaliable on PC
I loaded 1.7 but that took away 1.8... Is there a way to have both versions in the Steam library???
There is but it's more of a workaround, if you head to the 1.7 discord, link in the description, there's an FAQ section that will guide you through being able to switch between 1.7 and 1.8 easily without re downloading 👍
funny thing is when he was talking about maps oculus just got the turbine and abandon map i still want that jungle map tho
Its getting closer by the day :)
I think i was the only loving the quest update on pc.
Playing with a gtx1080 i didnt have great performance before
Iv a GTX 1060 so count yourself lucky :P
@@EyesonVR o shit haha well i feel better now
you hit the 90 fps before the update?
No idea 🤷🏻♂️ FPS dosnt bother me as long as it seems smooth to me lol
Always had realistic on since I first started with 1.8, there so much more stratification from it
I would always get screen tear…. Is there a way to fix it?
It's tough to say as it's not like it's just a monitor there's loads of other factors at play 🙁
It's evolving! Just backwards....
As long as it evolves! Lol
Good thing I didn't waste my money on this one. Thanks.
It's still worth a go regardless but sure I'm happy to help 🤷🏻♂️😂
1.8 actually had the cone style realistic smoke for a few months
Must have been a nice few months haha
@@EyesonVR yeah I hate the change to the circular "video game" style smoke
@@EyesonVR they did it because it was too easy to smoke through walls I think
Agreed, it's gone from actual smoke effect to animated sprite which is such a shame
Great to get a devs opinion on this, it seems strange to me as well, if they didn't switch to a new engine then it just doesn't make sense.
@@EyesonVR Is it possible to have both versions installed on PCVR or do you have to choose one? Ie is it easy to switch between the two versions?
You can have 1.8 and 1.7 installed at one time and switch between then :)
100% still love it but NOT into buying decreases
I hear that!
I think the onward devs will work it out I have faith
Same here :) I'm sure they've learned from this situation
I watched the entire video waiting for your breakdown of 1.7 vs. 1.8 AI - but it never came! That for me is the crux of the issue... That and no longer being able to go prone. A video specifically on the AI differences would be most welcome!
Yeah I'm sorry about that Spinx this was such a hard one to put together with limited time. But your totally right, 1.7 A.I would be far more tactical, use smoke to cover their advances, flank you, scissor or pincer move you, there were a challenge compared to 1.8 A.I that just stands still and empties mag after mag after mag at you
Wow ive only played 1.8 and from what I heard about the game I was disappointed, but now seeing what 1.7 looked like I can understand why people liked it so much, I think I'm going to try 1.7 now even if its just with bots it looks way better than 1.8
Right!? Don't forget to check the 1.7 discord (Link in video description) they play and set up 1.7 PVP games 👍
But fear not! There are ways to play your PCVR games wireless with your Quest 2, look into 'Oculus Air link' or 'Virtual Desktop' these will help you do that, Air link is free and Virtual desktop isn't but in do think Virtual desktop is better, hope this helps 👍😀
I've been debating either build a pc or buy a quest
That all depends on your budget and what you want more. The way I did it was get a Quest then I got a PC and use the Quest with it, if you want to get to VR the fastest just get a Quest first
@@EyesonVR yea true I'm willing to put the money into a decent PC but Idk if I will use it enough to make it worth it
I'd you send money of a gaming PC but aren't sure you'll use it enough? Sounds like you don't end one and should get a Quest 👍
@@EyesonVR you right Imma get a quest
You won't regret it! 😀 It'll definitely make you want a PC for PCVR more though lol
Do you think as the quest 3 and 4 come out that onward will go back to the old graphics the more the quests can handle
Im confused. i just went back to 7.1 but am i unable to play with any real players now?
You my friend need to check out 18:46 in the video all is explained 👍😀
@@EyesonVR exactly so you’re saying there’s no way to play online without linking with people on discord correct? I won’t be able to find games?
Without linking or finding people first your basically out of luck, the problem is the player base for 1.7 is much smaller, there's plenty of people and if you post in the discord looking for a game you'll 90% find one right away. But finding a server just by opening the game and looking its a real lucky dip to find a game already going.
@@EyesonVR oooh okay I’ll try that then.
The 1.7 discord will jump at the chance for a game and have regularly scheduled one's :)
I'd take a look at the reccomended specs on steam to see if your son and brother can play it, I don't think they will have a problem, you can always have them both get it and refund it if needed (you get 2 hours of play time before you aren't allowed to refund a game)
As for the free part if you buy Onward on PC you can revert it back to 1.7 for free, I do mention in this video I believe, or at least one of my Onward videos, Onward is cross play (you can own it on PC but be with people useing a Quest in an online match) but it's not cross buy, that means if you buy it on Quest you have to buy it again on Steam. What a rip off am I right?
Happy to help and glad you enjoy the videos :)
Thank you
Under current circumstances it might actually be that the developers are trying to make their game more accessible to gamers with lower end graphics cards.
Oh see now I want to hear the story but I don't want you to get banned...again lol
OK so it's a bit of a weird one, the 1.7 and 1.8 in this video are PC only, if you check my channel I have done a 1.8 Quest vs PC aswell so 👍
The 1.8 update was for when Onward launched on the Quest 1, but the PC got that update to witch turned it from what you see here in 1.7 to basically Quest compatible graphics, so the Quest has only ever known version 1.8 and above.
If that makes sense?
I’ve never played Onward before, but why has it been stripped down so much by devs?
I'm just happy I can actually play it now for longer than half hour without wanting to barf 🤮 😁
By the way I play on PC using Airlink.
Hey Jo!
First off thanks so much for your kind words I really appreciate that and I'm glad you enjoyed the video 👍😀
Iv been where you are as I had my Quest 1st and for about a year before a PC that could handle VR and I was the same, I was just happy to be in VR and experiencing this amazing platform.
I did a Quest vs PC video on Onward aswell if that's of interest to you aswell
In terms of wanting to barf, try and turn on night mode on your Quest things may look a bit orange at first but you get used to it, I found it extended my ability to play 10 fold time wise and headache wise 👍
Thanks so much for saying my videos are high quality Jo it means alot
Well if that's the case I hope your in the discord! I'm always happy to have people like you around 👍😀
It sucks your having such trouble with VR do you wear glasses at all? Maybe turn down your screens brightness aswell don't have it up on full, apart from that you just need to do a bit more time in VR, maybe find a 360 meditation video on TH-cam in the Quest and sit and relax while in VR and see if that helps you acclimatise better?
They'll be able to use the new asw using true vector points and be able to scale the pc version up bc they'll have way more performance
Very sad
*Cough Sony Watchdogs* Your spot on with this though it's became the mobile version of its self but for everyone 🙁
Deciding on pavlov or onward, I know you prefer onward. Maybe this update will convince me
Oh a whole new game, as in worse. Reverse nms lmao
It depends what you like Sheepism, if your looking for fun, laughs, some fun game mods but not to hard on realisum then go Pavlov, if you want a game that's a bit buggy but realistic as hell go Onward 👍
Im still salty about this... its a shame what happened to this game :(
I'm not surprised Badillin, after seeing what people lost so Quest kids could invade I'd be more than salty:/
I feel the same
yeah. and this video is presumably using the latest onward v1.8. imagine how bad it was over a year ago when we went from v1.7 to original v1.8 (which was a lOT worse than current v1.8 - which is still pretty bad). no warning, no apologies, no refunds. people were shocked and pissed. rightfully so.
I am useing the latest version only because I couldn't roll back other wize I'd of gone with the original 1.8 *shudder*
I’ve got a quest and would be fine with 1.8 but fuck I wish they hadn’t shafted you guys. I wanted the game to continue down 1.7s path, I’d love to be able to eventually experience 1.7 and if 1.9 goes back and they give quest it’s own version, I think I’d get a PC headset just for that
Does the Quest 2 get this update or is it just PC VR?
Well 1.7 isn't an update it was the version before the current one.
1.7 was only ever and is still only avaliable on PC 👍
@@EyesonVR oh okay thanks
How tf do you make an update that makes every feature worse?
You make a version for the Quest then give that to the PC players aswell 🤷🏻♂️
Yo what are your specs man?
