    I’ve been a Christian in my mind for only a year. I was an atheist for years and was then agnostic. I’ve been researching a lot and orthodox is obviously the way to go. I had a feeling that’s what I would settle on. Its largely thanks to you and your way of looking at the world. There are a few Roman Catholic people I really really respect so I’ve been trying to find out which church I want to start attending. Now I need to find an Orthodox Church in my area because I just love listening to the way you think and see the world.

    While listening about ark replicas (1:05:51), wooden blocks at the end (that was for a moment called "a box") remembered feeling from childhood when while playing there was some special in boxes, in placing something inside the box.
    And this remind me basic types of religiosity (heard it somewhere) - one is about being inside, in warm seclusion and another about being outside, about spaciousness, open space.

    • @SweetImmaculateHeart
      @SweetImmaculateHeart 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As a mother of 5 children I can tell you there is unequivocally no more loved plaything than an empty box. Preferably with a lid. They adore putting things in, taking them out again, carrying around or even hiding their collection of random treasures if the box is small, or even putting themselves in the box ( such as a cardboard box "fort" or even a large wooden toy box with a hinged lid that all of my young children would hide and play in when they were small enough to fit.)
      There is even a sprawling "big box" store in the US called the Container Store which sells all manner of size and shape of organization containers which women (whom are ourselves vessels) in our country are obsessed with. It is a deeply resonant and meaningful pattern.

    Okay. Here's a story my mom told me. There were actually two Arcs that King Solomon had. One of that of Saint Mary's and the other was Saint Michael's. So Solomon wanted to give King Menelik I the Saint Michael Arc but the clergymen, I think, who were going back from Israel to Menelik.'s Country upon Solomon's orders actually switch the clothes covering the Arcs and take Saint Mary's Arc. In the story Solomon actually follows them but by then they were long gone. I may have to ask her for the ending though cuz I forgot whether he reaches them and God tells him to let them go or he doesn't reach them at all.

    Too fascinating! And edifying. I’m Orthodox but have been paying some attention to Catholic “trads” which means I’ve been running into Fatima material. The idea of the period of Christianization before the End is similar “the triumph of the Immaculate Heart.” It’d be interesting hear some universal history “analysis” of Fatima. That said, for obvious reasons, I wouldn’t expect it!

    • @gillianc6514
      @gillianc6514 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To me Fatima is the distraction that has brought about the demise of the church of the West. There is a lot demonic in its darkness and complete absence of the Praise of God. It has done nothing but divide the Catholic world: those who like the Fatima trimmings on the rosary prayers and those who don't, those who think the third secret is known and those who don't, those who question whether the consecration of Russia has happened or not.... I could go on .... it helped unbalance Catholic devotion into purely intercessory prayer to a distant God who needs placating......... oh come on........ what is Christian about that!!!?

    Regarding America's Founding Dathers, there's also a statue of George Washington (George Washington Enthroned) based on the Zeus Olympios of late antiquity, as well as the Apotheosis of Washington on the Capitol Building rotunda which depicts him as King of the Gods. Additionally, the apocryphal Vision of George Washington where he's visited by an angel and shown the future of the USA in an apocalyptic vision.

    It would be interesting hearing an integration of Universal History with the events of the western European reformation. I was hoping that he would be touched on, but there's the Ethiopian Deacon Michael who spent time with Luther and affirmed the teachings of the Augsburg Confession then as far as I can tell disappears back into wherever he came from. That's all I've been able to find about this 'extreme Ethiopian' who aided those in the north trying to correct Roman abuses, leading within the Lutheran tradition to arguably a tradition of over correcting.
    But lives of saints are good too. Thanks for your work and this spotlight on a people who've been Christian longer than most peoples have been peoples.

      An African scholar in Germany would have been a big deal just for the oddity of it, no doubt being the first black man they had seen, yet I’ve never heard of that happening. Furthermore, monastic vows are VERY important to Ethiopians, so I have trouble imagining one having any respect for Luther after flagrantly violating his own, which he made in the name of Saint Ann, whose Combined feast with her Husband, Jochaim, is today.

    @Richard: in the Western Church, the martyrology is read liturgically at Prime (which is traditionally sung/said after Matins and Lauds) - at least that's what I've gleaned from visiting old rite (pre 70s "reform") Benedictines and also Marian Franciscans. But for the rest of the Church, I don't know. Guess what? Prime was taken *out* of the Office/Hours in the 70s-ish...! Enough said.
    Nowadays often the lives of saints are read at communal meals of religious orders, too, which is not really liturgical per se, but significant.

    I just wanted to say that RELIGION comes from "re-ligare" which means "to bind strongly" saying that something is Religious simply means that it makes us come together, it binds in a powerful way. The reason why the word religare was used to described sacred meeting activities, sacred assambly, it's because nothing binds people more strongly than whats beyond their individuality, thus get united by some deity, or some activity related to God or to some gods. Anything that binds people can be called religious if it binds people strongly, now that religion brings forth some natural rituals that flow from it. If you get binded by business and money then you will develop some ritualistic behaviors around that, some become like a liturgy. Anything that is placed above you s bigger than you and worthy of worship brings about a religion.

    • @bigolboomerbelly4348

      it comes from the latin religio. the romans had a qualitative dichotomy of superstitio vs religio.

    • @irodjetson
      @irodjetson 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bigolboomerbelly4348 Just as you can find etymology of english words you can also find the roots of Latin words. Religio or religare has roots "re" gives strength or repetitiveness to something, every word with Re in front of it has that quality in many languages still and it comes from the latin. ligio has the root "ligare" which means to link or bind. Superstitionis also has roots and etymology to it "super" above, the second part is made of the word "stare" to be somewhere, and "tion" which means action. They were used in specific context due to the nature of those words and the nature of the activities. Superstitio simply means that people something is added on top of what already is, that's why until today we call superstitious people to those who give power to certain things or actions above the natural capabilities of those things, people that add on top of things more to what thing actually are.

    So in the conquest of Mexico, the flag which the conquistadores brought was the so called Spanish "St.Andrew's cross" which makes a lot of sense when one sees how they converted first the Tlaxcallan people (which were cannibals) and made them fight against the Aztec in Mexico-Tenochtitlan (which also were cannibals). All of this is insane, I swear. Great symbolic insight into all these patterns. Also, I remember hearing from some peasant old man in rural southern Mexico an explanation about a truck driver which didn't wanted to stay for the celebration of the local patron saint, and because of that the saint punished him and made one of his truck's wheels fall off on the road and caused a huge crash. We couldn't cross for hours because of that crash btw.

    The Saint who got walled off after being accused of not keeping thr fast, after he said something like "his solution was to make himself a secret", could the wall be acting like a veil separating the Saint from his accusers in a sort of micro pattern of the way the ark was separated from Israel by a veil?

      I suspect it's related to falling off the ladder. Jonathan often says Christ fills the hierarchy. Assuming a saint is on a certain rung, the accuser is trying to pull him down. If the saint responds he gets pulled down. By not responding, by locking himself up, the saint stays on the ladder, but, he can no longer climb higher.

    When historians find out that their methods have only ended up peripheralizing this country in global history, they will eat crow. Ethiopia existed before any other country, even before ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, among others. It won't be long before a thicket of evidence is shown to demonstrate that ancient Egypt was founded by Abyssinians (Ethiopian Highlanders), and the spiritual tradition among other fields passed to the nations from Egypt. This includes the scriptures, regardless of canon and apocrypha.

    Ethiopians faught and defeated Italian colonialists at the battle of Adwa on the very day they commemorate martrydom of Saint George. King Minilik the 4th who is a distant descendant of Minilik the first who who was the son of King Solomon and Queen Sheba/Saba was their leading the war from the head. Surprisingly, king Minilik the 4th took repelica of the original Ark of covenant with him to the war, and this replica was named after St.George in his memmory. Ethiopians march forward holding this repelica of ark of covenant and fighted Italians and won the battle. There were Italians soldiers who claimed to have seen a man on horse with frieghtening devine appearance holding a glowing sword and fighting the battle of Ethiopians. Who was he? According to Ethiopians he was St.George because the day of the battle was on the same day when they celebrate mrtrydom St.Gearge by holding the the replica of the ark of covenant which was named after St.George. Note. the replica itself is the Sit of God but only named St George Tabot in memmory of his martrydom. Anyway Ethiopians have just reasons which are biblical to venerate and comemmorate saints. Check how King Minilik the 4th called Ethiopians to the war how he organized them, what he and his wife and other chiefs did at the battle. In each and every steps taken by the king, God has a great place.

    The Ethiopian saint, King Caleb is a saint in the chalcedonian and the Ethiopian church, but he died after chalcedon. Can you find out how that happened, that his a saint in both churches? Even after the schism. I read his story both in the Prologue of Ohrid and the Ethiopian Synaxarium.

    Our fathers say, the word of God written by his hand (the ten commandments) in the Arc of the Covenant is the symbolism of Christ being in Saint Mary's womb and so the Arc is the symbolism of Saint Mart.

    Could you do a video on Sicily, I've always seen it as the eithiopia of Europe. The symbol of sicily is Medusas head. Sicilians are not quite north African, not European. Giants in ancient Greece were said to live there. Sicilians have always been conquered and always revolted. Their architecture is a very Hybrid like the people, Norman, arabic and byzantine

    I think the saint accused of not fasting is about something like he knows that man cannot judge man, only God can. And he also knows that his physical being is just a vessel, and that man will fulfill his will. The accuser must have pulled this out of nowhere, and lied, the saint must have known that such outstanding behavior is most likely part of an agenda. So rather than have man judge him, and rather have this ‘enemy’ of sorts follow through with his agenda and act out more sins, and rather than act like his physicality is more important, he chose to show his accuser mercy and never let this reach him and spends the rest of his days in his mind in the company of God. I think maybe the walls big enough just for his body symbolizes the body. And maybe he did eat when he was to fast, and he chose this repentance. The symbolism fits there too that while his spirit is attuned to God, he is still merely man and a prisoner to the body and earthly demands and desires. And also that he used to be royalty in a great spacious palace, excessive to his being, with indulgence at the hand of servants. It could have been his way of showing God he has truly committed himself in spite of how he has lived.
