    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Awesome!! It's so great to have you here. There are lots of music nerds lurking around our lil community.
      Here is a musical/tuning description of voice feminization:
      Male or female we all start with the same harmonic series sound mass. Depending on the mass, symmetry, or turbulence of the vocal folds they will lay out the volume profile of the source. Heavier mass vocal folds produce a flatter spectral profile so the highest harmonics are more equal in volume to the lower harmonics (essentially compression of the amplitude for each harmonic). Less vocal fold mass produces a gentler rolled off harmonic series where the 1:2:3:4:5:6:7:8 have the most energy and then it quick rolls off quieter. Female vocal tracts are then smaller so they concentrate the energy on the upper mid harmonics. In a way a male voice is a low fundamental with lots of lows and lots of highs. While the female voice is a higher fundamental with mostly mids.
      So feminize a masculine voice we have to learn to reduce the glottal mass in order to soften the harmonic series so it buzzes less, then we shrink the space to raise our resonances to higher harmonics relative to the masculine one. That's basically it. :)
      Also different vowels are just different just intonation structures. The structure 1:5:7 is useful in feminization. Fascinatingly, in darker operatic vowels their pitch vs resonance is often tuned to 1:3:4, 1:2:4, etc. Very simple root, octave, fifth, octave kind of structures which is why they are so warm and smooth to blend! Lovely!

    • @raskolnikov3799
      @raskolnikov3799 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TransVoiceLessons Wow, thanks for that thought out response! I'll have to do some more research on intonation structures as it applies to this, that sounds super fascinating.
      I also didn't realize that female voices were more mid-ranged, I always just assumed it was female = high, male = low.
      I'm gonna make sure to watch all these videos and start practicing. Thanks for making all this information freely available.

    I happened to start learning more about throat singing a few months before finding this video, and it's making me geek out really hard because it uses very similar concepts. Different styles focus more on either overtones or undertones, but either way, it's largely about altering the shape of your mouth/face-often moving through and between different vowel sounds-to isolate and bring forward different frequencies of overtones while holding a steady source tone. If you listen for them enough, your ears start picking them up all the time, just like you mentioned for the AC unit :)
    edit: it's super present towards the end of the video when you start working through the different vowel sounds ^-^

      Hi there! Think of gender in voice as space. Voice feminization is space reduction. Voice masculinization is space addition. All the sound principles I talk about on my channel apply to you as well, just in the opposite direction.
      Hopefully I'll upload some voice masculinization videos soon! I work with both cis men and trans men on voice masculinization!

      As an audio engineer, think of it this way: The voice is essentially a saw wave, with an EQ on it. Our EQ has 4 primary filter peaks. The movement between the bottom 2 peaks create what we call "vowels". How cool!

    Absolutely awesome! So it's all about the reduction of space and moving that resonance up and forward and into to nasal cavity. Love this💕

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! You got it mostly right, but I wouldn't say in the nasal cavity! In my research and observation, I have noted that extraneous airflow into the nasal cavity actually sounds more masculine for most transfeminine speakers. This is because the nose is like a secondary "mini" vocal tract that can't be manipulated as freely as the oral/pharyngeal cavity. The velum controls the "on" or "off"-ness of the nose. Velum should be closed for all sounds except /m/, /n/, and /ng/

      What are you doing with your research? A degree, I hope. For me, being a musician and composer, it's absolutely fascinating. Especially since I play trombone and am always working with the harmonic series. Plus I've always been interested in phonetics. Your demonstration of how vowels use different combinations of the harmonic series is awesome! The mouth is like a synthesizer. So cool. Your work is so good, I'd love to see it made into a full length documentary.

    • @TransVoiceLessons
      @TransVoiceLessons  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@amyashlyn9293 That's awesome, I always love bumping into other musicians in the space! Precisely! The voice is basically a source sound and variable output filter. It's the ultimate biomechanical acoustic instrument!
      As for the education, I actually have a degree in Music Theory and Music Composition. I don't have any plans to go back to university in the near future but ultimately I'd like to get my phd in music composition.
      The results of my research will be documented in my upcoming book: The Art of Voice Feminization. I plan to explore all types of voice alteration. Feminization is just the first and most necessary for me.
      I would like to and do plan to publish my results and try to adapt the information for research journals.
      Your support really means a lot. Thanks for your thoughtful message.

    R1=V/4L
    R1= Tube Length
    L= Tube Length
    V= Speed of Sound (--343,000mm/sec)
    Essentially, the shorter the vocal tract, the higher the pitch, and therefore a more female voice

    So I watched some of your later videos where you start off with pitch and weight and say resonance is real complicated for later, and I thought - damn, I bet resonance is the worst because these make no sense.
    Having seen this one, uhh... so I'm a data scientist. Explaining it as a "reduction of geometric space" is probably the simplest and most easily comprehensible thing. Suddenly the entire affair seems way, way feasible because now I actually understand the what and why.
    You're a hero for making these.

      I think the main take away from this lesson is that the size of the vocal tract influences the sound. Reducing that size changes to a higher pitch. A lot of less technically minded vocal coaches will tell you go speak from the upper part of your tract to reduce the depth of the sound, and that’s a simpler way of saying that one should reduce the size of the vocal tract to get a higher pitch. At least that’s what I got from it. Practice finding those higher pitches so it sounds natural.
      I should also mention that she has another more recent video aimed at people who want to work on their voices whereas this video is aimed at professionals who train people; not the lay person working on their own voices as much. Hope that helps.
