I never knew transgender voice training was thing but it makes so much sense that it does. I really feel bad for trans women, because with trans men, they’re voice changes naturally, but for trans women, that just doesn’t happen.
It has exactly one benefit - with practice you can actually switch between masculine and feminine voice at will. I know of a trans opera singer who can do literally every type of voice, from baritone and bass to soprano.
I literally finally discovered my perfect voice during this video. I could not be more happy or thankful. I wish to announce that I have finally come a step closer to being myself and hope that everyone else will experience the exact same euphoria I experienced.
You’re the only trans person I’ve ever come across who addresses a lot of questions a jazz/electronic music composer would ask while feminizing the voice. Thanks so much! Also, this comment made me come out as trans. :)
Cis straight male here -- I think. I'm pretty sure, anyway. Very new to this stuff, don't have a clue what I'm doing. Here, or otherwise. I've been watching a number of your videos for a few days now; something about them resonates with me. Even tried following along, tried understanding and mimicking. It's incredibly difficult. I just wanted to say that I could feel the hurt when you brought-up those difficult nine months. And for that, my heart goes out to you, and everyone else learning to find their voice. You all deserve love, happiness, and comfort -- not only from others, but also for yourselves. Trans Women, *AND* Men. All of you. You deserve to love yourselves. One day at a time, you lovely souls.
Criticizing yourself is one of the greatest invisible pitfalls you can lead yourself into. Recently, I was talking to my friend's roommate for the first time, and I was just chatting along and then I bring up dysphoria and talk about that. The roommate looks very confused as I keep talking, and then I am asked "Wait... are you trans?" That was when it hit me that my voice does not sound weird or "male" to others, and that I was simply being harsh on myself. I was then told that they had no clue I was trans in any way. tldr; Please do not be so hard on yourself
That's it, precisely! I've worked with hundreds of voices and the strongest commonality between them is the expectation the voice doesn't pass even when it does. It can be crippling and destroy peoples progress. Glad you got to have that moment. Remember that experience whenever you start to get paranoid.
I honestly didn't know trans people having to work on their voice to change it. I thought the hormones did it for them. I'm so sorry for what you all go through 🙏
Many people don't, the million times people at work asked me "So, when's your voice going to change?" :P and I had to explain that it does not happen in transwomen, with women asking this I usually had to ask them to think back to their puberty and if their voice suddenly increased in frequency a lot like in the way it drops in boys. Many times women had absolutely no clue, which to me made it clear just how much more obvious I was aware of boy puberty and all of the effects that were going to happen (I didn't know I was transgender at the time, I just felt weird and didn't know it had a name). (I personally have been very open about my transition at work or basically anywhere, so before someone wants to say "wow people are rude", next to getting that idea that they are, Dutch people tend to be direct and it will depend on the question and the place in a conversation in which they ask it if I answer, which most of the times is yes, but sometimes isn't). The only time I really had my mind go "Holy shit you off all people should definitely know this!!" when asked the exact same question was when general practictioners at the ER asked me that, 3 doctors (1 male one on one occasion and 2 female ones on a different occasion). In general though, I'm ok with explaining this to people, so don't worry I'm Someone, most people have no clue, you are definitely not the only one. For me, the fact it doesn't happen is usually what makes me really jealous of transfemales who were able to have boy puberty halted....
Part 8 really had me tearing up. I've always been hesitant to do voice training because it seems like so much work, even though I did a lot of music/singing training. And then I had a few experiences with transphobic people who clocked me on my voice and I've really wanted to start working on how I sound. I just really needed to hear what you said about your voice not determining your validity.

I had stopped practicing for about a year and lost hope of feeling comfortable with my voice until I found your channel. I've been practicing techniques from your videos for just four days and I can already see a massive difference in my recordings. Your commitment to providing professional level info to us is honestly inspirational. Thank you
Cis opera singer here, just discovering this whole area of vocal technique. This stuff is fascinating, and so much of this overlaps with my own training, but in an "opposite" way. We are always trying for more resonance, more space, but everyone learning opera makes the same mistakes of freezing their vocal space and choking themselves off, or of trying to do hyper function work, and it is just as much of a problem. Long story short, this is awesome, and "in my singer capacity" I really appreciate how all your advice is totally compatible with good technique.
I was just starting to try and learn how to change my voice (came out publicly two weeks ago) and you just saved me from starting to lay falsetto as a foundation
same boat! I also came out publicly just earlier this month and I've been struggling with my voice too. This channel also saved me from trying to lay a falsetto foundation.
i really struggle with number 8. ive spent years and years not allowing myself to practice for more than a day because every time i become self aware of my voice it hurts. i appreciate your channel and your free content as always.
You can actually practice even when you just go shopping. Just try to get your voice a tiny bit higher than usual. You feel the extra confidence right away!
I only just discovered your channel yesterday, but already I feel like I'm making more progress than I ever have before. I had just been trying to raise my pitch and really struggling with it, then later I tried swallowing and trying hold my trachea up from there, which seemed impossible to me, but the whole starting from a breath thing you talk about in your videos feels like the part I had been missing, and it feels like this is the point where my voice can really start to work for me. Thank you so much!
Everybody talkin' about how good these tips are (and don't get me wrong, as always, Z your knowledge is amazing), but goddamn Z you looked amazing in this video!!!
6:13 had me dying! I'm so tempted to start talking like this at work just to see the reactions! I definitely was really deep in #6 trying to flex and relax specific muscles, and I got more strain than ever! I needed that reminder that it's not such a strict process, and I need to focus on what I want instead of trying to manipulate my mouth areas fully.
I am literally just starting out in finding my feminine self and my voice has been a huge source of self criticism and has probably been one of the key hindrances in my pursuit of being me. I have watched your previous videos in this series and began to try the voice training techniques in the last video and immediately stopped after hearing my voice. So thank you for this video as #8 really hit home for me. It is probably going to be a long time before I am comfortable speaking but I just wanted to thank you for everything you've done here.
i know this is at least 4 years old now, but i just have to say, i really (like seriously) needed to hear someone tell me to take it easy on myself with voice progress. And it especially helps to know both where you started from (very similar to my starting point) and that you also struggled with harsh self criticism, although i'm sorry you did. because of my past and my mental illnesses, i have such a bad habit of just tearing myself down at the smallest thing, and when it's something as important and potentially triggering (of dysphoria and other things) as voice training, it can get pretty bad. but yeah, i just wanted to say thank you so much. the whole section on not tearing yourself down immediately really resonates (pun intended) with me
You are an angel, sis!! I'm going through a pretty intense year of self discovery and growth and what you do for our community is beyond words. I have a road ahead of me that seemed impossibly difficult, and every time I watch your videos and work on my voice, that road seems less and less scary. I wish I had the eloquence of speech required to completely express my gratitude and appreciation for you! You're literally helping to save people's lives. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! ♥♥♥♥♥♥
I did not expect you to come through the camera and start sitting in my room at 11:30 but that's pretty much what happened. That validity sucker-punch was mean enough to draw tears, and I thank you for it.
It is tragic you don't get more veiws. Your stuff is amazing and as a audio dork I love how you explain the different effects of voice. The point about super harsh criticism is so important. Its really hard to have a pleasant sounding voice when anxious. Much like every hobby I do when I first started vocal training I was too obessive and strained everything. In a way it felt appropriate, voice issues are a constant nag on trans people so damaging it feels like you are punishing it. But you can't run faster on a broken foot and you can't speak clearer on sore throat. It would be interesting to see you cover vocal strain and breathing habits.
Thank you! While I may not have as many views as some other TH-camr's, I'm being supported by an absolutely incredible community of trans, gnc, and vocal nerds. My private education practice is very successful so I get to do all of this completely full time. Pleasant voices while sounding anxious are always going to be a bit weirder. But that's true if your cisfemale or trans. I would like to make a video covering strain since I haven't talked much about it. As far as the breath goes, that's pretty low on my to-do list but I'm sure I'll get to it eventually.

Thank you for this great video! 12:30 This is the best thing I've ever heard about my "problem": I've had no problem "failing" with my appearance, but I'm so afraid of "failing" with my voice...
So many insights! This blew my mind. I feel so much better about where I'm at now....and where I'm headed! :) Your content is incredibly helpful; you are such a great teacher!!
Thank you! I've seen a speech therapist and watched other videos to help train my voice. This was probably some of the best advice I've gotten so far. I am totally in that paralyzed phase and have probably been pretty hard on myself and discouraged. I still get misgendered a lot and the few people who explain why they have a hard time getting it right often refer to my voice! Thank you for reminding me that my identity is still valid regardless of how I sound. But you can see why the desire to change my voice is strong, but I think I need to just go easier on myself and just grind away at practicing...
So I’m a cis male, and I clicked on this video for a couple different reasons, 1 it’s always good to learn new things and learn about the experiences of others, but the main reason I clicked is because my voice changed on its own to being higher than it used to be, this doesn’t bother me, although I’ve received rude comments about my voice being higher and softer, on the other hand I’ve had many compliments on my singing, where as used to my voice was so deep people said I sounded like a monster when I sung along to anything other than choral music. The first time my voice got higher was after I had a tumor removed on my parathyroid at 15, then it got higher again after I had an allergic reaction to GABApenten at 19. But I smoked for 7 years and that’s kind of reversed it a little bit but not much. I’ve been trying to quit this year, and when I do quit my voice raises back in pitch after a couple months, of course when I fail it goes back to my new normal after about a month of smoking. Anyway I was looking for answers as to why that happened and I think I’ve got it figured out, it’s because of al the scar tissue and irritation in my larynx changing the resonance.
Woah you didn't happen to have a Gabapenten type that had a particular coloring agent added to it? I had the Neurontin version of the drug that did not contain the coloring agent, and my pharmacy switched them up because Gabapenten was considered cheaper, and I had a rash all over from the coloring agent (which, surprisingly, is listed as one estimated to cause problems in about 65% of the population....go figure...) In Europe the substance is known as "sunset yellow" under E110.
@@Dutch3DMaster wait you got a rash too? I have no clue if it did or didn’t(have the coloring agent) but I had terrible hives and a rash all over and visual hallucinations, anxiety, and derealization. I also had difficulty breathing and a rapid heart rate. It happened after taking it 3 days.
We all owe you a great debt. I watched one of your videos last night and I have watched almost all of them now, and you are the catalyst for me having the wherewithal to start training my voice. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. 🥰

Holy crap you have incredible range! So many of our sisters think they need super high voices when even cis women have deep voice ranges. Good vid sis!
The bit about changing how low you go, not how high (as well as R1 and R2 from a different video) are total breakthroughs for me. What you're doing is invaluable to the community and im so happy you're making content
There is sooo much explained in this video. Clears up many misconceptions. I really like what you're saying in #6 & 7. For me that's where trying out new voice in real life comes in, but not just talking, but also listening to how I sound and how that approximates the sound of people I'm talking with. Irl is where I get a variety of voice examples to interact with and try to copy, what you're referring to as mimic. It's also shows me my limitations and what I'm not getting. So then I gotta go back and experiment w that to see if I can do it. Sometimes I can, sometimes not. Ok I'm rambling. Great video! Thanks💕
I'm glad for your video I've started giving myself a chance to learn again and progress with my voice, instead of being frustrated that I couldn't sound more feminine in a ridiculously short period of time, just practising the haw - ha made a noticeable difference whilst watching thank you xx :-)
THANK YOU, especially for the rigorous audio technique approach. As someone who's been obsessed with sound from an early age this approach is so useful. Also, thank you for not making me feel dumb for wanting a better explanation of resonance than "you should just get it, head voice, chest voice, blah blah". There's a structure. It moves, changing the shape and size of a resonant chamber. Your previous videos are helping me so much and I feel like I'm making so much progress. I never ever dared dream liking my voice enough to try voice acting and now I dare dream of it thanks to you (and the wonderful folks at r/transvoice). It feels within reach. Thank you so much

What a wonderful video, I am so happy to see a trans woman take her experience and map it to the technical aspects of voice. I am taking vocal therapy with an expert who has little experience with trans women, but we touched on the different areas you laid out so well. I hope you are able to help women in our community because voice is a very important trait that we are evaluated on.
I don’t know why the algorithm decided to plop this specific video of yours into my recommended but I am *so* glad that it did. I never even thought about trying to transform my voice: I always thought it would be too hard, that my natural voice is low af, etc. But your point about mimicry really spoke to me, so I just tried it by mimicking you. And holy cats, I proved myself wrong. So excuse me while I subscribe and binge your entire channel :p Oh, and I’m a musician too! Do you think all this could be applied to singing for MTF? I’ve been trying to work on my speaking voice and it seems to be working okay but when I sing, my voice kind of reverts back to male and it’s frustrating.
Because I have a musical background, singing in higher frequencies and with a female sound was actually easier than speaking. I think singing can actually be a good way to practice getting your tone right at higher frequencies

Transgender archer just starting voice training here. I had a bit of a eureka moment when you explained the resonance dropping. I realized why it wasn't work for me... it's that drop! In archery, we have something similar where someone "collapses" before release. They pull to a certain point, then move forward a bit before releasing, which causes a dirty shot and ultimately a miss! This is fascinating! So many parallels!
thank you so much for your videos. i am just beginning the process of transitioning, and my voice is one my main forms of dysphoria. this video really means a lot to me, you said many things i really needed to hear. i am actually a musician & i honestly never really thought about how learning to train my voice is kind of just learning a new instrument, except this time the instrument is me lol. i beat myself up a lot but i am ready to challenge the negativity. it takes lots of practice & observing & growing, & i am so ready to start practicing whenever i get the chance. anyways thank you again, i feel not only reassured but also very informed!!
Thank you so much for the final point you made about trans-women who are critical of their own voices. You are amazing. Your vocal ability, your teaching ability, and your caring are so incredible. I really admire you. I might add one thing I learned recently and that is having fun with the voice. Having fun with it even with mistakes, kind of brings emotion to it, relaxes everything, and helps dissipate some of the self criticism. I am less monotone when I do this, and, hey, practice is nicer. Good voice is as much psychological as it is physical in my experience. Thank you sooooo much!

Congratulations!
I honestly didn't know trans people having to work on their voice to change it. I thought the hormones did it for them. I'm so sorry for what you all go through 🙏
It's happening in only one way. When they take testosterone, trans men usually see their voice becoming deeper.
lmao apology accepted
paperclip
@@Dutch3DMaster wow! Thanks for sharing your experience! :)

Trans girl here.
I found your channel and I have been practicing your exercises and tips all day.
It’s just day one and it’s going to be a slow snail climb but maybe one day I’ll have a more comfortable femenine voice wich I feel happy with after much practice. ^^
My current regular voice sometime gives me dysphoria at the moment.
Thank you so much!

I had stopped practicing for about a year and lost hope of feeling comfortable with my voice until I found your channel. I've been practicing techniques from your videos for just four days and I can already see a massive difference in my recordings. Your commitment to providing professional level info to us is honestly inspirational. Thank you
That really means SO much! I'm so thankful I can help you in this way. Thanks for being part of the community!
I needed to hear number 8 today. ty

Same. This can be a very disheartening process, stuff like that does wonders
I'm so thankful I can help all of you! @ashley @marley @lain
This is so beautiful to hear! Keep it up!
Who else cried at point 8? Thank you so much for this! You are an angel
@@TransVoiceLessons I'm really glad your business is working out

12:30 This is the best thing I've ever heard about my "problem": I've had no problem "failing" with my appearance, but I'm so afraid of "failing" with my voice...
So many insights! This blew my mind. I feel so much better about where I'm at now....and where I'm headed! :) Your content is incredibly helpful; you are such a great teacher!!
So glad to be able to help you
Even as a cis person, this is endlessly fascinating.
I had the Neurontin version of the drug that did not contain the coloring agent, and my pharmacy switched them up because Gabapenten was considered cheaper, and I had a rash all over from the coloring agent (which, surprisingly, is listed as one estimated to cause problems in about 65% of the population....go figure...)
In Europe the substance is known as "sunset yellow" under E110.
Okay, that ending was ADORABLE! But for real, these are some great tips! I think I've been focusing too much on just one thing and should try other techniques. Thank you so much Z!

Holy crap you have incredible range! So many of our sisters think they need super high voices when even cis women have deep voice ranges. Good vid sis!
Yup! It's a pretty common issue to hear transwomen actually going TOO feminine when they first get started (at least in terms of pitch).
Thanks💕
You seem so happy in this video and it warms my heart.
I'm glad for your video I've started giving myself a chance to learn again and progress with my voice, instead of being frustrated that I couldn't sound more feminine in a ridiculously short period of time, just practising the haw - ha made a noticeable difference whilst watching thank you xx :-)
Yay, this is so wonderful to hear. I truly believe that -anyone- can alter their voice to a place they can be happy with with. Keep it up!

Thank you so much! I've been out for ten years, but I've always felt apprehensive until your video. Between your talk of vocal folds and the overview of how resonance affects your voice, you won me over. Thank you for everything you do.

Do you think all this could be applied to singing for MTF? I’ve been trying to work on my speaking voice and it seems to be working okay but when I sing, my voice kind of reverts back to male and it’s frustrating.
Yes absolutely. I teach transwomen to sing female as part of my practice. These thoughts and ideas can be applied to any component of voice practice.
Because I have a musical background, singing in higher frequencies and with a female sound was actually easier than speaking. I think singing can actually be a good way to practice getting your tone right at higher frequencies
will this help an MTF who is also a light baritone?

Having fun with it even with mistakes, kind of brings emotion to it, relaxes everything, and helps dissipate some of the self criticism.
