  • As a 12-year-old, Krisztina Egerszegi had débuted at the 1987 European Championships, placing fourth in the 200 back. A few days prior to this race she had placed second in the 100 back to East German wonder woman Kristin Otto, and that gave her encouragement for the 200. But the favorite in this event was another East German, Cornelia Sirch. Sirch went to the 100 in the final with a slight lead over Egerszegi but the Hungarian teenager blitzed the third lap, and came home for the gold medal in the second fastest time ever, 2:09.29. Sirch was worn out from her early effort and was passed for silver by her teammate, Kathrin Zimmerman, although Sirch held on for bronze.
    Of Egerszegi, Sirch said, “I'm sure she has a great future before her. I'm certain she will break new ground in backstroke swimming.” You could say that. This was the first of three consecutive gold medals in the event for Krisztina Egerszegi, something accomplished in a single Olympic event only by Australian sprint freestyler Dawn Fraser in the women’s 100 free. She would eventually end her Olympic career with five individual gold medals, four in backstroke events, and seven medals in all, an unequalled Olymic best for swimming through 2008. She would win both backstrokes at the 1991 World Championships, and nine titles at the Europeans from 1991-95. In 1992 she won the Europeans in a world record 2:06.62, which would stand as the world record until 2008.

    Around 4:40 you can hear the Hungarians chant "Hajrá Egér" and at 5:46-48 "Szép volt Egér". Basically "go for it Egér" and "you made it"\"it was nice Egér". :)

    thank you so much for the upload. I remember this event as if it was yesterday watching as an 8 years old. She became my idol for a good few years. No she she has 3 teenage children and all swim on competitions. Go egér!

    Well, the announcers were wrong. Egerszegi means in Hungarian: a person from Egerszeg, which is a town's name in Hungary. It has as much to do with mouse (egér) as Hungary with hungry. Nothing. Her nickname was Egér, though, that is Mouse. Just a pun on Egerszeg.

    Egerszegi lost about a second total on flip turns to Sirch and still beat her.

      Con toda seguridad es entre las tres mejores nadadoras olímpicas. En 1988 solo tenía 14 años cuando ganó su primera de oro de las 5 totales que consiguió en tres juegos olímpicos. Es la única nadadora hasta hoy que ha conseguido 5 oros olímpicos en pruebas individuales. Sencillamente fuera de serie sin hacer mucho ruido

    Eastern European countries dominated the 1988 Olympics - Soviet Union and German Democratic Republic as the first and second in medal tables, and the USA is distant third, if not fourth or fifth even.

    Listening to these 2 guys call the race, I thought the winner's first name was Little....not Kristina. More than a 'little' creepy, the way Criqui and Naber fawned over her, but it was 1988, I guess.... Having said that, Egerszegi is one of the greatest swimmers of all time.

      Oh please....give it up you damn feminist- the announcers did fine and are famous announcers for that matter...especially Bob...and Jon Nabor is no slouch...former Olympian give him respect!

      @jaygoldman9686 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I would think Jon Nabor ( former Olympic Gold Medal swimmer) knows the swimming world a lot better than you....and that a 14 year old is still a kid really....be honest! That is sensational for a 14 year old to be competing with other adults and challenging for the gold. That is his point.....he is not fawning over her there is nothing sexual there. You are a feminist moron!

      @@jaygoldman9686 I swam next to Egerszegi Krisztina in the same pool Spartacus in Budapest in 1988, and it was amazing to see her, she was flying on the water on backstroke, her movement was so dainty and impressive.
      I really loved her, yes, i was in love with her, she was very kind and I really liked her face. We were born in the same year, and I remember my swimming mates asked her signatures, all of them, accept me.
      Me, I just stood there and watched her...
