- At Atlanta 1996, Krisztina Egerszegi won her third consecutive gold medal in the 200m backstroke, making her only the second swimmer, after Dawn Fraser in the 100 free, to win the same event at three straight Olympics. She is the only female Olympic swimmer to have won five individual gold medals.

Egerszegi, what a legend. She was always so humble. When I was a little kid, we went to the swimming pool where she trained and she used the same public changing room as everybody else. It was in 1994 when there were lots of news about her quitting the sport or not. Some photographers even followed her in the arena and she since she really disliked the media harassing her, she asked us if she could hide behind us, little girls. I was too young to realise what a legend she was but I clearly remember her winning her 5th gold medal in Atlanta a few years later. She is so respected and loved in Hungary.:)
So serene but dynamic at the same time - Krisztina Egerszegi's swimming is a thing of beauty! Her legacy and impact on the sport will never be forgotten!!

Her leadoff backstroke time in the medley relay, 1:01.15, was faster than the winning time in the 100 m backstroke final at this event.

She is not at all forgotten, not in Hungary anyway, but she doesn't want to live in the limelight anymore. She has 3 children, and they didn't know either for a while who she really was.

Wow, the rest of the field are light years away from her. She could still make the finals in any of the current & past 3 games??
What a talent! She could have easily continued on to Sydney 2000 (if she wanted to) for more gold! Why didn’t she enter the 100m Bk in Atlanta? Her time in the heats of the Medley relay was faster than the winner of the individual 100m BK.

I got to go back and change to revised the timeline to help Whitney Hedgepeth win the Gold medal for the Women's 200m Backstroke in 1996.

She was the first to ever win 5.
Obviously, once she stopped and the new generation came.
