  • This was an event that had had no dominant swimmer since the Los Angeles Olympics, but Britain’s Adrian Moorhouse was considered a slight favorite, and also felt that he was owed something, after placing fourth in 1984. In the ensuing four years he had won the golds at the 1985 and 1987 Commonwealth Games (in the 200 in 1987), and at the 1987 Europeans. At the 1986 Worlds he had touched first but was later disqualified. His challengers were expected to be Canada’s Victor Davis, the eventual 1986 World Champion and Soviet Dmitry Volkov, runner-up at the 1987 Europeans to Moorhouse, and bronze medalist at the 1986 Worlds. But Volkov was recovering from a cut to his hand two months prior to Seoul and had missed a month of training.
This was the first men’s final of the 1988 Olympics, and Moorhouse did not start well, turning in sixth place, as Volkov had a big lead. Then Moorhouse came on and at the end he knew it was close between him and Volkov, and wasn’t certain he had won. He had, but Volkov was third, as Moorhouse had outtouched Hungary’s Károly Güttler by only 1/100th of a second. Nobody had heard of Güttler, who was ecstatic just to get a medal, but in 1993 he would set a world record in this event.

    7:30.
Didn't notice this back in '88. Volkov does a slingshot and pike start. The slingshot is common today though way ahead of its time back then!
    Thanks for posting.

How rude is that commentator asking if Moorhouse would try to cheat with a then- illegal dolphin kick on a turn? Moorhouse has been DQed previously BUT the underwater footage was widely viewed afterwards and NO infringement was spotted.....

Starts were so bad back then, but big difference in how they swim breast here compared to 1984. Here the head position is more modern where they go all the way in to streamline. In '84 they swam with their head up and top of their head out of the water.

Rule changed in '87 to requiring the head only to break the surface by the completion of the arm pull. Thought with more streamlined technique they'd take a better run at the WR, swum with head above surface entire race in '84.

I noticed, that these swimmers along with the women swimmers here and today comes out of the water higher, than say a Renate Vogel who the Breaststroke at the 73 Worlds much closer to the surface of the water. You look at Vogel's stroke and it is very odd looking.

Pelham Higgins right I only just noticed that. I’ve seen footage of Kornelia Ender doing the same and wondering if it’s an Eastern Bloc thing since Moorhouse trained in Russia as well?
