Im 74 and I had these in Antiqua when I was 15. Never forgot them. We lived on the British island for a year due to my dads job there. I just made these but it was so fussy getting the corners to meet and after cooking, the apricot ran out soooo I rolled into balls halfway thru and made indention with the back of a 1/2” measuring teaspoon then filled. Faster and no running filling. Worked perfect.
Two suggestions regarding rolling out the dough: 1, put a baking stone in the refrigerator or freezer so that you can roll on a cold surface and the dough doesn’t get warm and sticky. 2, use plastic wrap on top of the dough and roll on the plastic to avoid those sticking to the rolling pin.
When I make these I use a diamond shaped cookie cutter, use egg white with a splash of water, mixed, brush one end of the pastry, fold over, and bake. My family favorite is apricot (solo) and nut filling.

Hello everyone. When I was in my teens in the 1960s a Czech lady who lived across the street from us, showed my mom and me how to make the Czech version of these cookies. around 4 years ago I couldn't find the recipe nor the copies I had made so I went on a wild internet search to find it eventually did. The dough was a yeasted affair but ultimately very similar in shape and process to these delicious looking Kolaczki. In my hometown we also had a large Polish community with a butcher shop downtown where my mom would take me. All the best from Jim Mexico retired
I was taught this about 52 years ago by our next door neighbor who is Polish. It has been a family favorite from the beginning. I never knew how to pronounce it properly. Thank you so much for sharing.
My grandma was Czechoslovakian and would make hers exactly this way! She did the nut filling and a povidla filling (prune spread). I’ve never attempted to do these, but your video is so helpful. I think I’ll try!
My favorite cookie in the whole world. My Ukrainian mother made hundreds of these for the holidays and I am going to try this recipe for this Christmas. Thank you!
I love these cookies. My dad was a 1st generation American and he was 100% Hungarian. My mom was 1st generation American and she was 100% Polish. The common language in their neighborhood here in the U,S was Croatian as there were other languages too. Since we couldn’t pronounced the name of these cookies, we used to call them “babies in a blanket” My grandma, mom and myself made the filling with Lekvar (prune filling) Thank you for the video.
@@146agi122It was sort of confusing growing up because I never knew if I was eating something Polish, Hungarian, German, Serbian, because everyone in our Church called the same food item a different name in their language. I just remember driving to Hamtramck, Michigan back in the 1960’s to buy a huge gallon size can of Lekvar. Back then, Hamtramck had almost all Polish people living there (although our family lived west in the suburbs). Now I make my own prune filling as I can’t find in here in Kansas. Thanks for the info regrading Lekvar = jam.
My favorite family cookies! My Polish GG’s (great grandma) recipe has withstood the test of time! All generations love this treat at Christmastime-even those that weren’t old enough to know her. ❤
My mother and a neighbor got together and made these for Christmas when I was young. They made enough to fill a roaster! She called them Hungarian Christmas cookies. We lived in the Pittsburgh area then. When we moved to NWPA she brought them to a party and the host, who came from the Pittsburgh are originally exclaimed, “Horsey-binkies! I haven’t seen these since I was a kid.”
I make mine almost exactly the same way with the exception of using powdered sugar instead of granulated to roll. They are always a huge hit. We also like round ones because they hold more of the filling (my homemade jams). Love this channel!
I started to make these around 5 years ago. My family loves them. We always make them for Christmas Eve to have after our soup supper for after candlelight service. We finish any prepping for our grande celebration on Christmas Day. Life is better with Kolaches🎄❤️🌟
These look absolutely delicious! I haven't had these in about 38 years! My precious friend was married to a greek man and a lot of their baked goods were very similar to polish foods. Anyway, I thank you so much for sharing your recipe with us! God bless you!❤💞🙏🍽😘
Oh wow I saw that thumbnail pop up in my feed and had to click on it. Mama used to make these and her mama before her and probably goes way back in the generations. Glad I found your channel. I'll check out your other platforms! Happy Holidays!
I find putting some egg yolk on the dough & then pinching closed works really well. I love these cookies and make mine with extra butter. They turn out to melt in your mouth, so delicious.

One of the few memories l have of my grandmother is baking these cookies with her when l was four years old. These cookies are the best! They are so rich with the cream cheese and butter. We made them with raspberry and apricot filling. So good!

We pinch off a bit and roll into a ball quickly. Then flatten the balls with a floured glass. We don't fold. Just push a little indent in the middle and fill and bake. They come out perfectly every time.
I love these so much. My aunt taught me how to make them was I a little girl. We didn't have the fancy equipment and had to do everything by hand, and we used the canned (can't remember the name) filling; not pie filling. But it was so wonderfully fun. Thank you for sharing this!
