As someone that’s been playing these games since they were released, it’s interesting to get a newbie’s perspective. It’s blowing my mind that your favorite S1 zone is Labyrinth and you prefer the US Sonic CD soundtrack. Not sure if you’re aware those are some extremely hot takes for sonic fans lol
Yeah, I've come to realize that lol. Who knows, maybe I would despise Labyrinth Zone on a revisit, and I played through CD with the USA soundtrack so that probably gave me a bias. But I don't mind being the odd one out! Thanks so much for the comment
I've stumbled here by the way of Starfox and I must say, your channel is great! And you have only been doing this for a year? Amazing. Consider me a subscriber.
Damn, never seen a retrospective fall off so hard near the end. I'm not gonna say something stupid like 'you didn't play them right' or anything but Sonic games are designed to replayed over and over again. I totally understand your first playthrough of these games not being a very quick one but that's part of the process of understanding what these games are. Arcade games, reskinned into home console games. Instead of replaying for a high score, you replay for a better time, getting better and better with each playthrough.
No disrespect intended when I ask this, but what exactly do you want from these games? You critique them for being too slow yet I'm not sure what the alternative could be to learning the level design and understanding the hazards that come with it. Allowing sonic to "just go fast" would essentially be a straight line. Going fast in these games has hardly anything to do with holding right or revving up your spindash, but has much more to do with speedily clearing/skipping the hazards and platforming sections that each act throws. I do feel as if all four of these games deliver on this exact premise, even if not all of them are perfect attempts at it (specifically Sonic 1 being the weakest, yet speed is very much possible). Apart from this critique of your evaluation, I did enjoy your video, specifically your editing style. As another commenter mentioned, it takes me back to an older era of youtube in a manner that doesn't reek of an amateurish style.
Thanks for the comment! I hear what you're saying, and I addressed it briefly during the Sonic 1 section of the video. More time with the games would have let me become more familiar with the mechanics and levels, and old games like this were designed for replays to increase mileage. I still stand by what I said though. I try to approach older games in the context of their era, but I think it's true that game design has come a long way, and from a casual, modern perspective, early Sonic levels feel a little clunky sometimes. They're fantastic in a lot of ways, just less so in others. But anything I ever say in a video or comment is just my opinion, and I respect yours! Thanks for the engagement and kind words, I really appreciate it!
I do think your playthrough of Sonic 3&K in the origins package may have soured your experience somewhat, though. ignoring that aspect, alot of your crits are 100% valid and with 8/10 of them I agree completely, nonetheless, great video, it was lovely to listen to while drawing, thank you!
Thank you so much, that's very kind of you to say! Going back through that video I actually completely agree with you, I may not have been 100% fair to that game in particular, but I stand by most of what I said. Thanks again!
Sonic 3 actually does have music remaining from Michael Jackson, but you need to play Sonic 3 alone (not locked-on with Sonic & Knuckles): The ending theme song is Michael's early version of his later hit song "Stranger in Moscow." Knuckles theme, needs S3 alone to hear Michael's version. But even with lock-on, Michael's work still remains in Carnival Night (it samples "Jam!" from one of MJ's songs), Ice Cap Zone (but it's also argued that it was only MJ's friend, but really, it was probably both of them), Launch Base (Go! Go! Go!), all from MJ apparently.
@@ivanavi123 Understandable, SEGA used to say that none of MJ's music remains in the final game, but it does, lol. Now it's considered a fact, after Sonic's creator mentioned visiting MJ's Neverland Ranch, IIRC. (Also: NiGHTS features a clock made of flowers... which seems based on MJ's clock at Neverland Ranch.)
If you're interested in Sonic's subsequent games, don't miss Saturn Nights into Dreams, which is really the best evolution of Sonic's classic gameplay, in my opinion. It didn't sell well and so afterward, the games became more streamlined and less abstract. NiGHTS is a flying dream-sim, based on Sonic's classic gameplay, it's wonderful and an evolution that didn't continue. Christmas NiGHTS is wonderful too of course. (If you want to play Sonic R, the PC version is better than Saturn, and it plays better, I liked having rain effects on, all the time, and music off, I'd just fly around as Knuckles lol.)
@@ivanavi123 cool, I hope you also check out Ecco the Dolphin, I always suspected that Ecco is related to Sonic! Ecco seems to swim at Sonic’s top speed… and Ecco restores his life with fish (like Sonic collecting rings). Plus it’s just awesome to simulate the ocean 🌊
Sonic CD: originally has a different spin-dash, which requires a moment of charging, or else it won't work. You played with the Sonic 2 spindash, which is considered almost universally better (although I don't mind the alternate style in Sonic CD originally).
As someone who has recently played a lot of mario and sonic games but has no real nostalgic bias to either character and thinks sonic is way over mario in games it's always interesting seeing someone's first impression with sonic. I also wanna say that I was pretty shocked looking at the subscriber count for your channel, this video feels like it would be made by someone with way more subs. I'm already subbed now and am excited to see what you think about sonic adventure. However I will say that if possible you should try to emulate the game since the modern release of sonic adventure is pretty infamous for being unfaithful to the original and having many glitches the game didn't have on the dreamcast
Thank you so much for your kind words, and for the advice! I'll make sure to emulate adventure, I'm pretty sure the dreamcast has fairly reliable emulation
About Sonic CD and 3K, yeah you experienced them pretty accurately. Mainly CD. The Sonic 3 version from Origins has a few innacuracies and downgrades but nothing too much, mainly the music in Carnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Base. I reccomend listening to the original soundtracks of those zones, they're really good. Edit: k, i watched more of the video now, ya know about the Sonic 3 stuff but still, check out that original soundtrack
Thanks! I definitely wish I had looked into 3K's music a bit more in hindsight, I think it was a bit unfair to gloss over it the way I did. I have listened to those zones and I agree, the old versions were better. Thank you so much for the comment!
Right. The video isn't "90s - the golden age of gaming" lol some could argue the 90s still being part of the Golden age. Arcades were still big early 90s, NES and SNES/SEGA phenomenon. Pokemon. Enough said.
The early 2000’s was definitely not a golden era for Sonic it was one of the worst for him, he had great games during that time for sure but also duds.
The editing this video gives me semi early TH-cam vibes in the best way possible and I love it
Thanks, I'll take that as a compliment!

palmtree panic theme is so much better in the japanese release
I agree, I love the US soundtrack but palmtree panic was super annoying
Great video. Always interesting to get a new perspective on the Sonic games

Agree with you completely, Sonic 1 had a couple great songs but the Sonic 2 soundtrack is all killer no filler. One of my favourite OSTs of all time.

It is a little weird to see someone speak positively about labyrinth zone

A few nitpicks aside (Sonic not being able to speak, the riddance of lives, the ending ruined(?)) Origins CD is the BEST version imo
just pointing out tails was introduced in the other version of sonic 2 on the game gear, but nevermind that awsome video!

The battle music in the first game was depressing. The battle music in the second game was epic.
