Hello Sid, all Fine? Very cool friend. Could you comment a little on the care you took with the bike? What lubricating oil did you use, what was the change period? Thank you.
Eliseu Corrona castrol full synthetic 10-40 every 4500 miles, air filter cleaned every 10k, and new plugs every 15k. Also check valves every 25k. Had to adjust 3 of them.
@@TWPeeps thanks for your return friend. For now, I'm using 20w50 mineral oil on my motorcycle. Recommendation of the Brazil manual. It is 53,000 km long. However, a synthetic oil will bring better results. That's why I asked you about the product you use. My intention is to perform a lubricant upgrade and ensure longevity to the engine.
Since its introduction in 2002, the big DL has been one of the biggest open secrets in large capacity ADV/touring biking. That trusty engine was designed with sport in mind in the mid '90s (it first appeared in the TL1000S in '97) and the same basic mill is still doing excellent service in the latest big V Strom. Remember folks, you don't absolutely HAVE to buy the latest shiny machinery to enjoy two wheels. There are fantastic older bikes out there for small money. Do your own wrenching and you can create a tremendously individualised machine of your choice for just a few grand.
I live this video, I have watched it many times, so nice to listen to a worst experienced man of wisdom as he rides some lovely roads. Thanks for the video... Wouldn't mind seeing some more videos on your Vstrom. 😊
Have ridden a 2007 for 40.000km, pure joy. Had to sell it, bought a Honda, a BMW, an Yamaha and now… got another V-Strom, a 2019 model. It’s like coming back home. Great bike, a true all-arounder!
Yes during the 15 years I own my 2005 V Strom I had several bikes from Aprilia to a Yamaha but always love riding the V Strom the most best all arounder now I have a 2018 V Strom I really love it
This is a fantastic video!!! No blasting or catchy music, to be heard instead a competent narrator that tells the story of his longtime machine. The smooth toned sound of the engine with a little growl is great as well. The scenery and weather is great and ideal for a 'get out and go' ride. This 73 year old guy handles the bike, road, and hazards perfectly, and I swear if I didn't already have a vstrom, I would be shopping for one above all other bikes. I bought a 2012 650 for $5,200 at a dealer, and sometimes I wish I'd have gotten the 1000 for the extra power. However, the 650 is quite adequate for my 6' 225 lbs, and I like the economy of 51-59 MPG for commuting. I've been concerned by a few other long-term reviews of the stator going bad, and it's good to know his lasted until 86,000 miles under some extensive abuse. I tend to keep the RPMs low so I may never have that problem. I actually like the style of the older vstroms (2010 and earlier), but I kinda like the newer ones (2017 and up) IMO. Overall I get the feeling I will have this bike a long time, and I won't regret it either.
V Orlando One of my riding buddies has a 650 and he has no problem keeping up with me and he gets a lot more mileage out of his tires then I do the 650 is a real good choice
Hello, I had a Wee for a couple of years, and now I ride the V-1000. I wish I could ride both alternatively! I couldn't get enough of the 650, which I personally think handles curves better than the 1000. It gets better MPG too and has plenty of power to spare. Great lighting too. I was itching for the extra displacement which is fabulous on the freeway, but there is always a trade-off. Happy rides! 🙂
Awesome video! I love how the bike has been part of your life for over 14 years. Thanks for sharing your experience and a small glimpse of your life as a rider.
Best review on the dl1000 on youtube! Just picked up a 02 with 23000 miles last week and it's already my bike I've owned. Threw some shinko 805 off rd tires on it and it loves gravel rds now too!! As good as a klr650 in the dirt and almost as fun as my fireblade on the streets with way more comfort and half the speeding tickets
I`ve just got my 2006... 50k miles and recently serviced, new stator included... now all I want to do is ride it until I`m also 72 and beyond that! Thanks for the video... it helped me indeed! God bless you, Mr. Davis!
Karl Heinrich Thank you and hope you have as many years riding your Vstrom as I have really enjoyed the bike over the last 14 years take care and ride safe
I love my vstrom. Bought a leftover ‘07 for $7500 otd. I did a few mods, raised the handlebars up and back a bit, new seat, added a few teeth to the rear sprocket, and added 2 usb charging ports. Have taken long distance, camping, adventure riding, it’s never failed me. I’ll keep ‘til the engine dies! And yeah, I like the old school feel. Good review.
I love it! This is what a bike review should be; original owner with tons of miles and experience on it and ridden hard (the way a bike should be). This is a realistic evaluation, not some nit picky whiny review by someone that has 2 weeks of seat time.
damn ~don't worry about think and stutter@!! 72 yo and riding strong I'm coming up right behind you class of '71 this may be my bike. Thanks Dell Davis for the great review
As a new rider and new owner of a used 2014 VStrom 650, im loving your videos. Is it just me, or does everyone watch these FPV videos looking at the road ahead searching for the next bend, apex and exit ?
My 2007 was a daily commuter until I retired in July. I have only had to change the stator, the wheel bearings (lots of rain riding), and the seat seams gave out last year. I'm keeping it forever.
"Hello" from another 72 year old! Turned 72 in Oct. 2020 and I'me loving my Vstrom 650XT. I don't need the power of the 1000, but certainly admire the power stats. In SW Colorado I ride 5 miles to before I hit pavement! What a great machine for an all-rounder! Thanks for great vid! - Ray, near Durango, CO
Glad you enjoyed the video both the 650 and the 1000 are Great bikes you can’t go wrong with either one. And I just turned 74 four days ago hope you’re still enjoying your V Strom at 74 like I am mine
Just goes to show that the vstrom is a pretty hardy unit, just like yourself. At 70+ years of age its great to see you still riding and enjoying it! I love my 2014 vstrom, all kitted out, and It will definitely be with me for a few more years yet. Great review mate.
Enjoyed your video and unpretentious informative insights. I thing another great aspect of V Stroms is over 20 years of Suzuki refinement and ownership support on social media. I'm always ary about brand new models that have not been put through years of use and feedback. BTW, what local is this road near? At first I thought... Southern California, or hill country of Texas, dry looking, but when you mentioned Twin Oaks and I395/Randburg?, I was at a loss. Glad to see that being in one's seventies doesn't mean giving up riding motorcycles. Safe riding, John.
Great bikes ! 07 1000, modified to my taste. Handles great , can see over traffic . Handles great🤔 did I mention how good it handles? Love the bike ! Great review I have to agree 100%
Appreciate the review! Really one of the best reviews I’ve seen on this bike. I’ve been looking at a lot of different bikes and this review convinced me this is the way to go. Looking at a 2006 with 27,000 miles. Now I’m really excited to get it! If it goes 80,000 plus miles I will be thrilled!
Corey Lyons A 2006 with 27,000 miles is just getting broken in it will do 80,000 miles as long as you change the oil and filter on a regular basis I’ve been running amsoil 10/30 and changing the oil around 4000 miles with filter and a Suzuki oil filter I have talked with people that had 160,000 on their bike so good luck and enjoy
Have a 1st gen and have done all the recommended mods to it. Changing gear ratio and getting it professionally tuned with a power commander, made a world of difference. Other than being so heavy, by comparison to other bikes I've owned, it's been the best bike all-rounder I've owned. Two up with the wife and full kit, I know I could take it anywhere. Keep thinking about something smaller for solo adv and better off-road, but doubt I'll ever sell the beast, 20 years old and still going strong!
The more reviews I watch of this bike the more I like it. I’m looking to trade my Tracer 900 in on something physically bigger and more comfy. The DL1000 could very well be an ideal 50th birthday present to myself next year. Thanks for a great real world review.
Plum Rider my riding buddy has a FZ09 and a BMW GS800 after he rode my Suzuki V Strom he wished he would’ve rode it before he bought the BMW he just went out an got a new leftover 18 V strom 1000 he loves it I think that would be a nice 50th birthday present
My DL1000 is 17yrs old and i've owned it for 7 yrs. No better bike to own. Goes where you want, when you want with no complaints and the best ride you'll ever have. Cleaned, polished and pampered as necessary. What more does one want. Nice video and the best view in the world, from a Vstrom. Thank you.
I've been on the fence about buying a used V-Strom; think this video sold me. I have a handful of years to catch up, although I don't know that my riding will reach Dell's badassery. Respect to you, sir, and thanks for the review!
Way to go!!! Excellent review! The earlier VSTROMS do not really get the reviews they deserve and your is a good one at giving a glimpse of just how good they are. I bought my V1000 Adventure new in 2014 after their change and I absolutely love it! Its tall so I have leg room in that neutral sitting position. They are so easy to mod out to just what you want. I ride all year unless there is ice. Im heading on 60 and have taken mine in to pretty tough stuff and it just did well. It can definitely go more places than I can off road but on it has PLENTY of power once they replaced the ECU and it ran like a whole different bike. My best riding buddy has an older Wee 650 that he loves and we put as many miles as we can on them between coffee stops! These Vstroms just never let you down. Im near Wshington DC so we have the ocean one eastward and the mountains to the west. Good main roads (but a LOT of traffic) but absolutely beautiful back roads that take you anywhere in the tristate + area. Keep riding my friend, be safe, and maybe one day see you out there!!!
Love it. I'm picking up a 2003 Vstrom, late model so no clutch chadder. Got on one at a bike show and wanted one ever since. Already have some adventure touring plans. Kudos for still riding and being all technological and stuff at your age. Good job.
@Roy Poud Yeah, I made sure I got the skid plate for it. I just rode the 03 I bought home last weekend, 5 hours on the road and super comfortable. The best thing was the pics I saw online didn't do it justice. I chatted with the owner who was a motorcycle mechanic who did everything to it that needed to be done. It was in showroom condition. I totally lucked out.
Clutch chudder doesnt care about model. The clutch basket is a problem that comes with time (mileage) on all dl1000's regardless of year. Luckily there are several mechanic shops that offers clutch basket modification.
Vstroms are such underrated bikes. I’ve got an 18 vstrom 1000, and a 97 suzuki bandit 1200. I love the bandit for its speed and aggression when you hit the gas, but I always find myself riding my strom. Super comfortable riding position and here in Wyoming there are a lot of fun dirt roads and 2 tracks that the strom handles no problem.
It's good to finally hear a report from someone who obviously really knows and loves motorcycles. You sir are the real deal. Your 4th gear is the only gear that's not limited by the computer. You can get, or find a diagram on-line, to make a device to fool the computer into thinking it's always in 4th gear. So no matter what gear you're in, it's not limited by the computer. I never found it necessary to fool the computer, because my 2012 VSTROM 1000 always went fast enough for me and I rode the crap out of it. After owning it for 8 years I upgraded to a 2019 V-Strom 1000. I like the new one really well and it was worth the upgrade, although my older V-Strom 1000 was a great bike and had absolutely nothing wrong with it. A buddy of mine still enjoys it today. That's a great road you're riding.
LOL Dell, it seems we old riders are following a similar path. I normally have had 2 or 3 bikes in my garage at any given time. Now I'm older I leave the sport bikes alone because they are too uncomfortable to ride more than an hour at a time for me. One of my favorite bikes was a 2001 Triumph Sprint ST. Back in the day. I've ridden about everything at one time or another. Now Im happy with a 2014 Harley Road King and my 2019 VStrom 1000. What state is that road in, in the video? Looks a lot like the Ozark Mountains where I live.
The roads here in California are pretty bad any mountain roads are back roads are full of potholes. You really need a sport adventure bike with good suspension because they will catch you out.
@@delldavis9803 Man, that is awesome. I am 46 now and got my first motorcycle at 44. I am restoring one right now and I am looking forward to tie up the loose ends on another that I have. I look forward to be riding when I get your age. May God continue to bless you and keep you safe🙏🤜
After putting 20k miles on my DL650 in the last year. I bought a DL1000 yesterday. Holy smokes! That 1000 is better in every way! I've owned and ridden a lot of motorcycles in the last 18 years. Shy of maybe a goldwing. This is my favorite so far.
I watched your review two years ago when I was considering my options. I got a newer model, the 1050 XT, last year as my first bike and so far put 12,500 miles on it. Absolutely love it. No fuss on highway and plenty enough fun in twisties, a bit too heavy for someone clueless like me to play in the sand or dirt, though. Mine already has some fancy electronics that help keep a greenhorn like me out of serious trouble and cruise control, too. Oh, and the added bonus is the fact that I easily get 50+ MPG (under 4,7 l/100 km) when I am riding sensibly. The engine is just amazing. Ride safely, sir! Greetings from Poland!
I learned to ride on a V Strom 650 my cousins bike I was 17 at the time and I loved it never dropped it today im 27 and I am planning to get a V Strom 1000 it just the perfect bike I can’t wait
ty sir, for the good information. About 9000 miles of 15 k on a 12 dl1000 so far, and your video makes me want to keep it even though I do NOT want to tackle the valve adjustment now due. Air filter change means one might as well check those rear valves though. Have you ever noticed a hiccup/burp at 2500 to 2800 rpm using lower gears at a steady cruising speed on back roads? I can make the bike do it at will! I have ridden for 45 years and this is the first time I have had a bike do such. Your purchase of a new strom is a real testament to your approval of these machines. Ride safe.
I would not worry about the valves I checked mine three times and every time they were within specs never were out finally I quit inspecting them. And that hesitation is common on all first GEN v strom I tried a fuel injection tuner that helped a little but didn’t Cure the problem after a while I just learned not to ride in that zone of RPMs. I really only had the hesitation problem when I was in traffic but I ride mostly on the open roads and I like to rev my machine so it was never really a problem. I hope this helps good luck and ride safe
Thank you for your amazing review I am deciding on buying a used one this week with very low miles and your video has made my decision easy on me. I am going to love it. Hope you are doing well sir, thank you.
respect! I had a 2007 VStrom 1000 now on a 2015 DL1000.....great engines, the Gen2 has great low down punch, just got back from Vosges Mountains, France, had a great time
I too upgraded to a 2018 it’s a great bike but it does make me lazy. With a slipper clutch ABS and traction control And a bunch other goodies that I haven’t even figured out yet.
Man....I am loving that road. It reminds me of the Blue Ridge Parkway from Cherokee NC to Front Royal VA. If you're ever in Georgia, let me know. I've been riding the roads in North Georgia since I was 16... I'm 50 now...could show you some good places.
Much love from South Africa :) Excellent review, I'm looking at purchasing a V-strom 1000 in the next couple of months, I'm needing it for a bug out bike, and general on/off-road commuter. I've been on a small 250 for a good amount of years but have had plenty of experience with dirt bikes and I've owned a zzr400 and cbr600. I've been struggling to choose between a honda transalp 700, a suzuki dl 1000 and the gs, looks like I'm leaning even more heavily into the Suzuki dl now. Thank you so much. - Citizen Guardian.
Great review! I have the exact same bike, had it for 12 years and I can confirm everything! I did not reach the 100K yet, I'm envious! Kudos, great video, loved everything about it!
Those roads are beautiful! Love my K15 V even though I don’t like the headlight… much prefer the square one on the new 1050. That’s the one I’m eyeing up for next year! Keep safe old timer.
I'm picking up a nice used 2011 V-Strom 1000 with 28600 miles on it. Comes with saddlebags and tour pack for $4000.00 Canadian which is a darn good price. I've been riding for over 50 years now. Been mostly cruisers so this will be something new for me. At 77 years old, I do believe it's time for a change. Enjoyed your video very much. Thumbs up!
What a fantastic review and what a road. Had a DL650 that was a brilliant bike, I should have bought the 1000 but I had an itch for a cruiser but that itch has been scratched... Time to get me a DL1000 👍🏻
What a pleasure coming along for the ride ..Thanks for the beautiful countryside and 45 or 50 years of riding chops ..There is a 2007 for sale with 15K that I will go have a look at ...I had a black bear jump out in front of me this spring ,She was close enough I could smell her ...I think she was a little imbarassed ...All the best from New England ,,,
guy wolff You’re welcome glad you enjoyed it and if you get the 07 I think you’ll be very happy I really enjoy the first GEN V strom and at 15,000 miles it’s got a lot of life left in it
@@delldavis9803 I rode as a kid during my pottery aprentiship years in Wales on a 67 BSA Starfire and then a 69 Bonnivile ..When I got home to Connectitut after a few bikes I got an R 80 and later a 61 R 69 S with the Earle Forks (Still my favorite bike (I wish I still had it )).I am on a 2017 Triumph 900 Street Scrambler and love the thing....Lots of very back road riding .Maybe 30 % dirt road 60 % bummpy back roads and 10% highway .I would love more supention for the looser goosey stuff ..
guy wolff my first big bike was a 67 Triumph Bonneville didn’t have a Lotta good luck with that bike so when Yamaha came out with their 650 I’ve got one it had electric start and I loved it. And pretty much every since then I’ve had Japanese bikes I did buy one Aprilia but didn’t really care for that either. And for Offroad I’ve been riding dirt bikes just lighter and a lot more fun then the V Strom In the dirt but the V Strom does like high speed fire roads
@@delldavis9803 I loved that 650 Yamaha ..It basically took Triumph out of the market in its time ...It was kind of a tractor in the best kind of way ..I had the 750 triple in 76 that first Grey and blue one before they went to the 850... .I lways remember it cost me $1976.00 in 1976 ..Loved the shaft drive on that one
guy wolff yes the Yamaha was a refined triumph 650 Better electronics better carburetion and a lot smoother I sold that and I bought a 79 XS 1100 really love that bike I think to this day it was a smooth running bike I ever owned
Hello Dell, I appreciate your review. Very inspiring that you are 72 and still riding. Gives me hope that I will have many years of riding ahead of me. About six years ago when I started riding, a friend turned me into Vstrom 1000 2004. I sold it in a month. Was not ready for it. I was on the balls of my feet and as a new 5-7" 165lbs with 30in inseam rider, it was top heavy and intimidating. I dropped it at the parking lot while practicing slow maneuvers. Since I struggled picking up the motorcycle alone, I gave up on it. Gosh do I miss it. That Vstrom has been on my mind since. Since then I have been riding HD 1200c Sportster 2004 and now more comfortable riding at 54 years old. Hoping you can help me. I cannot seem to decide between a 2018 Vstrom 650cc with 3K miles ($5K) or get 2008 V1000cc with 30K miles loaded with features ($3,800). My goal is long interstate rides and not so much city commuting to work. I would like to travel the western states and into Canada. I prefer the lighter 650cc, but worried it will be under powered for long rides as it will be weighted down with gear. Am also worried I will drop the bike and cannot pickup alone. Advise? After watching your video, 1000cc with 30K miles is doable. Thank you and very happy to run into your vlog. Kind regards
arielban1 I have a friend that has the 650 v strom he is 6’2” 190 and he has no problem hanging with me on the canyon roads are the highways. For your size I think the 650 would be more suited to you and you can do long distance touring with no problems. As far as weight goes I don’t think you’re gonna pick either one up by yourself both heavy 30 years ago I could pick up either one of those days are over. The reason my friend got the 650 it got a lot better gas mileage and was easier on tires I’m lucky to get 2500 miles out of us at the tires on my thousand. I think you would be happy with both so good luck and hope you get many miles of trouble free riding with which ever one you pick
Dell Davis thank you for taking the time to advise me. I will get the 650cc tomorrow. Thank you for the inspiration. I am so happy to have a path now. Cheers
Mine is an '02... bought used in '16 for 3200CDN with the TRAX luggage... 112000km... only failures are the chain grenaded a week before I was scheduled to replace it, which took out the clutch slave cylinder, so replaced the engine... and the known issue of the ignition switch resistor connections to fail (fixed today)... all I can say is #SWISSARMYFORK... that is the best description of this bike.. when I did the engine swap, I did the +2 on the rear sprocket as well, and went to a 530 chain instead of the 525 stock... one bike to rule them all...
I have an opportunity to snag an '05 DL1000 with 31k miles on it for a pretty good price. This video seals the deal, I'm picking it up day after tomorrow.
I'm a motorcyclist, since riding a 1981 xl 250r, my whole life has been spent on a motorcycle, even chemotherapy I went on a motorcycle, well, today I am 42 years old and I am experiencing a noise in my ears and a lot of dizziness, it is impossible to ride a motorcycle, seeing this 72 year old man playing this vstrom as an experienced young man makes me very happy.
Hopefully everything is going to be OK with you I know exactly what you’re saying I’ve had prostate cancer and melanoma skin cancer but I keep getting on the bike and riding and I’ve actually made it to 74 now will be 75 this year. Hopefully if you like me enjoying watching videos of motorcycles and all the racing on TV you can still get some joy out of that good luck and take care
@@delldavis9803 I came to your video because I'm buying this vstrom that was yours, the seller told me to see your video, I'll pick it up tomorrow, well, I'll try to fly, the last one I tried was a Harley, my ears attacked immediately, without a chance, I hope be lucky with vstrom.
@@toledosetegalo280 you know I’ve had ringing in my ears for years in every now and then I do get some dizzy spells but not often. I have a chatterbox headset that I listen to music and that will override the ringing in my ears. Well good luck with the V Strom Hope it works out for you it was a great bike for me
I have the same bike 2005 and I’m the same age as you. I traded for it on the spot after a test ride for all the reasons you stated. I love the seating position reminds me of the Dirt bikes in the 70’s
Excellent review!!! I was doubting to buy a 2005 one with 50000 kms (30000 miles) due to the generator problem.... but.... Boy at 84000 miles, I still have 50000 miles to go until that happens!!!! As I said, best review I have seen. Stay up-right!!!!
Roberto Martinez If you ride like a normal person and not like I ride you’re probably get a lot more miles without any generator problems I know a lot of the storm riders that’s never had a problem with their generator so good luck and ride safe
Hello, thank you for your great video! I bought my V-1000 ADV in 2014, put 35 Thousand miles on it already and cannot be happier about this motorcycle. The first inkling I had that I'd made a good purchase was the very dealer's comment when he delivered the bike brand new to me. He said and I quote: "I am sad because I am losing you as a customer". What do you mean? I inquired. "You will never need to buy another motorcycle after this one." Right he was! I can agree and confirm all of your perspectives here. When I did the valve check months ago, my mechanic said "you don't need to do this again" as valves like everything else on this bike are rock solid. They didn't even need adjustment. Quick question if you don't mind posting, where are you located? Where is the Lion's trail? I'd like to ride my bike there! 🙂 Safe rides! All the best. --Hugo
It’s always nice to see someone that enjoys their v strom as much as I enjoy mine. I live in the Kern river Valley in the Sequoia national Forest. Lions Trail is actually bodfish Caliente road lions trail is just a name that the old-timers up here in the valley have given to the road. if you ever get a chance to ride it i’m sure you’ll love it until then ride safe and enjoy your V Strom
Man had to do some investigating to make sure I understood where the terrain was you were riding man that's a beautiful place out there I was out there many years ago was very fortunate and got to do some off-road riding in Death Valley out at Dumont Dunes I see you on the Left Coast Haha I am now residing on the East Coast in the Appalachian Mountains some pretty great riding here too enjoying high desert and some of the other background elements in your video if you are ever on the East Coast you should check out the MABDR, you can do at least 80% of it with street tires ,maybe more... perfect for a DL1K and you could get a taste of some of our fantastic Mountain Roads!!!
Where I live it’s right in the middle of the mountains and the desert I am able to ride both right out of my house. I would love to get to the East Coast I watch a lot of videos really looks like a lot of good riding more single track which I enjoy
There's a loaded 2009 for sale locally $4500. I wanna get now. I was waiting for a 650 to show but now want this loaded 1000. Thank you for the review.
nmFreeWheeler Thank you I’m glad you like the video and you can’t go wrong thousand or 650 they’re both great bags and the reason I went with 1000 I‘m Big guy and So when packing 2+ luggage I want that little extra horsepower and torque
What a nice review man, I made the mistake of buying fz6 for my first bike, even thought about buying the strom but never did go test ride it unfortunately, looking to get the strom next, after testriding one recently it`s just so much more usable and even offroad capable than the fz6.
Hi, very inspiring video. I bought a 2019 model and after 30.000 kilometers I fully agree with you about the advantages of the bike. Hope both of you did not quit yet.
Thank you he was a good friend and riding buddy going to miss him. I am riding the 18 now The 05 is semi retired and getting used to all the fancy gadgets on the 18 . Like you I have been riding 40+ years and not having the ABS actually saved my bacon a few times had to lock the rear wheel and lay my bike down so I wouldn’t hit a truck. But in the rain and slippery conditions I’ll definitely take the ABS.
I have the 18 also and really like it. It has a good combo of not too many gadgets compared to other bikes but the lean sensitive abs and traction control aren't over powering by all the reviews I have seen. Very intuitive. It's good practice to go out and really see how well a bike will stop in the rain knowing the abs will keep the front tire from locking up. Now jamming the front brake around wet corners I don't think I've got the guts to see how well it works! Maybe others will post videos and be the guinea pigs!
I have a 2003 Bumblebee FZ-1 with a little over 130,000 miles and have had the same sort of experience. Only one real non-maintenance issue--a bur on one of the front calipers--along with expected maintenance. Fork seals at about 60,000, new fork and rear springs (Hyperpro) at about 50K, mainly because my rider friends said I had to do them, though I had no handling issues. After I had it for about 13 years, I thought I deserved a new bike and bought a 2017 FJ-09 because of the triple engine and great reviews (and the ridiculously low price). A completely different riding experience, and I ride the FZ almost as much as the FJ. When I did the top end checks done on the FZ, the valves were always within spec. With its mileage, it wouldn't sell for much so there was no reason to sell it. People still say it is a really pretty motorcycle. The FJ has all of the modern and sort of goofy styling and all the electronic features. (The electronic in the manual take up most of the book.) The FZ has taken me on many three-four day road trips here in California and it has never let me down. I'll turn 75 in a few months, and both of these bikes are my "happy place".
I feel you can’t go wrong with a Japanese motorcycle I’ve had nothing but good luck with them. I’ve had two European bikes and both of them had problems. I always like the styling of the FZ1 and I had a friends FZ09 for a while I really like that bike it was comfortable for me but yet sporty.
Hi Dell. Greetings from OZ! Just about to buy an 09 one of these with 95000 k's on it. Had one many years ago and always regretted selling it. Can you tell me what sort of video/audio eqpt. you used for this video please? I am 68 and looking to record for the first time. Stay Upright mate!
Congratulations on the upcoming buying an 09 vstrom . I am pretty low budget. Don’t spend a lot of money. I have an old Go pro 4 with an inexpensive microphone I bought off of ebay. Rocky Mountain has some good videos on microphone and camera set up a lot better than what I use. Good luck hopefully I’ll see some of your videos soon.
I have a 04 Strom 1000, with 52k miles, and I plan to keep it. It does what it says on the tin, and stock seat is the best I've had. I might buy a 650 some day, but I like the roominess and being able to take my missus, or one of my daughters as pillion. I'd like a Tenere 700, but that seat looks awful, and I could buy three second hand bikes for the money. I have a 1998 Subaru Forester, and the Strom is the two wheel equivalent. Thanks for your video, you ride so smooth and flow so well.
Thank you and I agree with everything you said that is why I bought the V Strom from the first time I sit on it I fell in love with it enjoy and ride safe
When it's comes to adventure touring there is none better than the vstrom 1000 and that man there has just proved it and I would buy one in a heartbeat.
Today is 831 2023 I just bought a 2008 these throm 27000 miles on I got it for $2500 and this listen in a what you've been saying I haven't rode by yet I've got To Do some stuff to it I got a lower little bit man I am going to have fun thank you for Doing this video
I just joined the V-Strom club with a 2019 650XT. I'm 55. Hope to put a couple hundred K on mine. Tales of 200K and more out of this bike tells me that not only are they bulletproof, but people love them enough to ride them that much and for that many years. One big reason that sold me on the bike. I just waited for a "last year's model" sale in January and went for it.
And you sir are my new super hero. Love seeing you riding that storm in the twisties! You narrate and ride better than most! I just bought a 04 DL1000 yesterday. It is running pretty crappy. I am hoping its just the carbs need to be synced. Can’t wait to have it fixed and get on it. I am subbing your channel. I could just sit back drink my coffee and watch you ride all darn day. LOL
Linwood Chatten thank you and I’m glad you like the video before you start spending money on your V Strom check out the throttle position sensor that’s the one thing that no one can figure out but it is a lot of times the problem. The throttle bodies hardly ever go out of sync. When I was having a problem with my throttle body position sensor the locals suzuki shop couldn’t figure it out but luckily on the forum One of the members was having the same problem as I was and when he replaced his throttle body position sensor the bike ran great again. So I did it and sure enough that was the problem.
The reliability and longevity of the v-strom was a big selling point for me. i ride the 650 2nd gen "gleestrom" and i love it. i have no regrets! maybe some day i will step up to the 1000-XT version. i really want to trade in on an XT model but not sure about what motor size yet, until then i will keep enjoying my 650.
72 years and riding... You sir are my new role model :-) Thanks for the video.
👍👍👍
Still riding?
Wow!!! 🏆
this is the foothills of Ca? looks like it...
And passing people too, what a beast
I've been wanting one for years and finally got a 2019. So far so good!
I am on my second vstrom I love them
Your Title alone sold me on the bike ..."100,000 mile review" ...
I Did watch though , great review
I love watching a skilled rider taking the bike through its paces
I have 202,000 on my DL 1000. Great bike. I’ve put in two stators. Did it myself. Stator has been only issue. Cheers
Sid Shelton That’s good to hear look forward to put in another hundred thousand on my V Strom

Keyboard Dancers Yes very true I love theV Strom so much that I have two of them a 2005 and 2018 love riding them both.
Yes during the 15 years I own my 2005 V Strom I had several bikes from Aprilia to a Yamaha but always love riding the V Strom the most best all arounder now I have a 2018 V Strom I really love it
The best review for the Vstrom ever! Keep going! Ride Safe!
I have the 2nd gen 650 as well. great bike!
I never get better than about 41 mpg out of my 2008, but I am always on the gas.
As an owner, I can only say that the 1000 is a beast. Enjoy
Appreciate your review! Just picked up an 03 with 54k miles that needs a little love for $700. Incredible value for a do it all liter bike!!
Best review on the dl1000 on youtube!
Just picked up a 02 with 23000 miles last week and it's already my bike I've owned.
Threw some shinko 805 off rd tires on it and it loves gravel rds now too!! As good as a klr650 in the dirt and almost as fun as my fireblade on the streets with way more comfort and half the speeding tickets
tanner foley congratulations on the new V Strom 23,000 miles it’s just broke in
I`ve just got my 2006...
Mojo cool! What mpg u getting? Does it run lean on any rpm intervals like the first generation did?
I am getting between 38mpg and 42 mpg around 3000rpm it has a little lean spot
Keep on..have 07,80K..you rider encourage us to hit 100..if you go lite offroad then put handlebar riser,..centre stand..
SoloRide ZX I have the center stand on my bike but I don’t care for the handlebar risers I just feel they throw the geometry of the bike off
Some people post a long-term review with 5,000 miles on the bike - not you! Thanks for doing this!
I love it! This is what a bike review should be; original owner with tons of miles and experience on it and ridden hard (the way a bike should be). This is a realistic evaluation, not some nit picky whiny review by someone that has 2 weeks of seat time.
metallurgy I’m glad you enjoyed it thank you
Nice solid review, no techno music or flashy camera work featuring a newly purchased drone ,, just solid info from a motorcycle rider !
ride on brother
damn ~don't worry about think and stutter@!! 72 yo and riding strong I'm coming up right behind you class of '71 this may be my bike. Thanks Dell Davis for the great review
manseated actually just turned 73
As a new rider and new owner of a used 2014 VStrom 650, im loving your videos. Is it just me, or does everyone watch these FPV videos looking at the road ahead searching for the next bend, apex and exit ?
💯
This the most awesome reveiw of a bike ever and this guy is killing it!!!!
@@delldavis9803 Both you guys give me hope at going on 46 and riding. I can't stop.
I live in Weldon up buy Lake Isabella and most of my riding is in the mountains around the lake. Southern Sequoia national Forest.
I'm envious. Thanks!@@delldavis9803
Great bikes ! 07 1000, modified to my taste. Handles great , can see over traffic . Handles great🤔 did I mention how good it handles? Love the bike ! Great review I have to agree 100%
Brilliant review I am 59 just bought me a vstrom 1000 I’ve got a DR600 I enjoyed the review you gave it at 72 so thank you
Well enjoy your V Strom
I have a 2006 with not quite 28k miles, it's a beast and all I'd want for.
Excellent review in fairness, straight to the point, honest and no frills. Brilliant.
I have had several other bikes while owning the VStrom. They are all gone, but the vstrom still there.
Have you had your clutch basket done yet?
The more reviews I watch of this bike the more I like it. I’m looking to trade my Tracer 900 in on something physically bigger and more comfy. The DL1000 could very well be an ideal 50th birthday present to myself next year. Thanks for a great real world review.
Plum Rider my riding buddy has a FZ09 and a BMW GS800 after he rode my Suzuki V Strom he wished he would’ve rode it before he bought the BMW he just went out an got a new leftover 18 V strom 1000 he loves it I think that would be a nice 50th birthday present
Great news, I have a 2018 1000 XT and loving it. Proper do it all bike, mine will be a keeper too. For the money this bike is near unbeatable.
This is one of the best reviews I've seen. Fantastic to watch and listen. I salute you Sir and I want a V-strom now.
Voytas K Thank you and I hope you do get a V Strom you wouldn’t be sorry
Testament to how good suzuki motorcycles are and always will be
A motorcycle company that always punches above its weight.
I have owned the 05 and now I have an 18 both great bikes.
Yes I really love my 05 but I too have upgraded to a 2018 that I’ve had for three years now I love the bike but I also loved my 05
LOL Dell, it seems we old riders are following a similar path.
Great retrospective. I'm still loving my yellow 2003, which I bought new.
How many miles do you have on it?
2nd hand
my blonde (02- yellow)
70k miles. struggles with clutch basket vibrate etc.

@@delldavis9803 😀 I totally agree, but my wife thought I was nuts at first. She finally realized I was a lost cause to motorcycle craze.
excellent video for the corona quarantine! like sitting with a friend talking bikes.
After putting 20k miles on my DL650 in the last year. I bought a DL1000 yesterday. Holy smokes! That 1000 is better in every way! I've owned and ridden a lot of motorcycles in the last 18 years. Shy of maybe a goldwing. This is my favorite so far.
Stanley Potter I feel the same way you do about the Vstrom thousand it has been the best bike I’ve owned it does everything very well
I watched your review two years ago when I was considering my options.
So happy you like the bike I personally think they’re a great bike for the price. Enjoy and ride safe.
I learned to ride on a V Strom 650 my cousins bike I was 17 at the time and I loved it never dropped it today im 27 and I am planning to get a V Strom 1000 it just the perfect bike I can’t wait
Good luck when you get your new v strom and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine
ty sir, for the good information.
I have that hickup on mine. Have you figured out what it is?
That would be nice but not sure I’m gonna make it back east again it’s been a while, but really love the scenery back there
Thanks for the ride Dell, what a blast.
You’re welcome glad you enjoyed it
I truly did, had my heart racin through the corners, I'm going to look at my hopefully future strom 1000 on Thursday. Wish me luck.
Well hopefully everything works out and you get it I’m sure you’ll be happy it’s a great bike so good luck and ride safe
Awesome ride. Thank you so much for that beautiful scenery.

Thanks for the vid. Going to look at a dl1000 tomorrow in Scotland. You answered all the questions I had. Great Vid
Good luck hope you like the vstrom. I know you’ll be happy with one.
I'm picking up a nice used 2011 V-Strom 1000 with 28600 miles on it. Comes with saddlebags and tour pack for $4000.00 Canadian which is a darn good price. I've been riding for over 50 years now.
Cheers
arielban1 I’m glad you made your mind up I think you made a wise decision enjoy and be safe
Dell Davis picked up my 2015 Vstrom 650cc. Never thought I would be so in love with a motorcycle. Thanks again for your inspiration.
The Mitton Method When my engine goes in my V Strom I too am going to replace it with another engine and keep the V Strom run and strong
I love that Area, I'm originally from Bakersfield and know the Tehachapi and Isabella Areas well.
I have an opportunity to snag an '05 DL1000 with 31k miles on it for a pretty good price. This video seals the deal, I'm picking it up day after tomorrow.
Mark Nunziata I love the 2005 vstrom from everything from the analog gauges to how great it turns in just a fun bike
I hope to see you on the road.
@@toledosetegalo280 you know I’ve had ringing in my ears for years in every now and then I do get some dizzy spells but not often. I have a chatterbox headset that I listen to music and that will override the ringing in my ears. Well good luck with the V Strom Hope it works out for you it was a great bike for me
@@delldavis9803 thank you mister Dell, I will look for this phone. God bless you.
Love the Review Bro!... I have 2 bikes and am looking at buying one of these
You won’t be sorry
@@delldavis9803 Thanks Dell
Thanks for the video. You made up my mind what I want to get I'm getting a V-Strom
steve bricker Enjoy it I sure enjoy mine I’ve got two
Thank you for that sir, enjoyed the ride.
Awesome roads fella and well done on the 100K!
I've just had a guy come back to biking and he's 85!
👍🏻
Pete Curran I have a couple of riding buddies that are in their 80s too I would sure like to make it that far to shooting for it
I have the same bike 2005 and I’m the same age as you. I traded for it on the spot after a test ride for all the reasons you stated. I love the seating position reminds me of the Dirt bikes in the 70’s
pat connell yes I know what you mean when I sat on it it reminded me of the bikes I had in the 60s and 70s Straight up right seating position
Great review. Beautiful road.
Why thank you glad you and joyed it
AmZing review!! I’m buying a 650 on Monday and riding back from spring field Missouri to Texas 🙏🏼
I had a friend that had the 650 and he just loved it it’s still running strong and it’s an 09
Great riding Sir, all the best for the next 100k.
Rich Thank you and safe riding to you too
Excellent review!!!
Demonwicked Good luck hope you find one you won’t be sorry
Great review and a great bike. I just hope I’m out clocking up then miles when I’m your age. 👍
Hi, very inspiring video. I bought a 2019 model and after 30.000 kilometers I fully agree with you about the advantages of the bike. Hope both of you did not quit yet.
Both still going strong
Great review and the road is amazing ride on bro
Really enjoyed yr video.. Just bought the new Vstrom 1050 and loving every minute 👍
Congratulations on the new V Strom
@@delldavis9803 Cheers Dell.. Ride safe

@@netegalkaka no sir, just change oil n lube chain
Two thumbs up sir..
What is riding location. From Michigan..
I really enjoy riding in the mountains around here where I live
@delldavis9803 what state is that, I have no idea..
Enjoyed the ride and review. ..."What a Great Day" hope to ride my 650 Vstrom on those California roads one day.
kuladeeluxe Well if you ever get up in this neck of the woods I’ll be glad to show you some nice mountain passes and roads
I’ve always liked the V Strom but I’m very envious of you being able to ride the mountain roads you have.. great review and nice riding
When it's comes to adventure touring there is none better than the vstrom 1000 and that man there has just proved it and I would buy one in a heartbeat.
Beautiful country I wish i had that in my back yard.
Yes I am really lucky to have all this nice riding around my area
Today is 831 2023 I just bought a 2008 these throm 27000 miles on I got it for $2500 and this listen in a what you've been saying I haven't rode by yet I've got To Do some stuff to it I got a lower little bit man I am going to have fun thank you for Doing this video
Glad you like it and hope you enjoy it
I just joined the V-Strom club with a 2019 650XT. I'm 55. Hope to put a couple hundred K on mine. Tales of 200K and more out of this bike tells me that not only are they bulletproof, but people love them enough to ride them that much and for that many years. One big reason that sold me on the bike. I just waited for a "last year's model" sale in January and went for it.
John Ridley i’ve actually heard of one person with over 400,000 miles on his v Strom.
@@delldavis9803 Good goal :D
You can't beat suzukis absolutely bombproof if looked after
The reliability and longevity of the v-strom was a big selling point for me. i ride the 650 2nd gen "gleestrom" and i love it. i have no regrets! maybe some day i will step up to the 1000-XT version. i really want to trade in on an XT model but not sure about what motor size yet, until then i will keep enjoying my 650.
Go for 650XT
You have my respect sir! 👌🇬🇷❤️
