- The "factory defect" that is very common in the A1707, A1708, and A1706 is when you open the LCD more than 90 degrees, the backlight stops working and you would think that the LCD is not working.
This video shows you how to fix this issue and how to diagnose it.

This is the first time I've seen someone do this repair professionally. Well done.
Thank you very much for this video! It's been one the most difficult repairs I have ever done, but I succeeded thanks to this video. It's very important to have a good quality microscope, patience and skills to do this repair.
Yeah, totally. I’d love to know a good microscope like that to try On some a1707 that I have lying around. Always good to learn something new
This are common problem with Macbook Pro’s 2016, 2017,2018 and even up to 2019. Apple only covers free repair program on 2016 only, yet even the 2017-2019 have exact symptoms they won’t fix it under their repair program. I wish you live nearby as I have at least 3 macbooks with this issue. Excellent job on the repair!
Thank you so much youve been so helpfull, nobody wanted to take the risk to fix my laptop, you explained it very well im gonna fix it myself
Hey there - just wondering how did you get on? Thinking of doing this myself, have dabbled with iphone fixes before but this one looks pretty tricky!
It is an insane level of repair.
Great video, i was able to fix a macbook pro A1707 with this kind of issue using your steps. It was amazing using the superglue technique it was more easy to do the soldering. Thanks again, great job. !!!
MacBook owners who have this issue should all bring their laptops to the Apple store and demand that they repair them under warranty.
If you bought it in 2016, they won’t fix it, look at the details on the program page for this issue, 2016 models won’t qualify anymore
this happens in new macbook air too
You’ve earned my respect. The super glue had never come to my mind before. #salute
Yup outside of the box idea 😇
yap me too! i quickly clicked SUBSCRIBE the moment he showed the super glue trick!
That part scared me. I remember trying to solder around superglue when i was younger. The fumes are from another planet!
Wonderfull video, wish you can explain little bit more of the gluing and the materials of covering the necked cable. over all great
Thanks, the glue is a simple super glue you can get in a hardware store (not epoxy).
The masking material is a UV mask you can find on aliexpress or eBay.
Nice and detail tutorial. I am a newbie on this things.
I still don't understand why don't you just replace the broken flex cable with the new one since you have it.
Hi, thanks.
I already explained this in the comments for some one else, the flex cable for the backlight goes under the LCD and to remove it you need to remove the very delicate thin LCD and try not to damage it with over heating, so I think this is the best way to fix it.
Regardless of that, as I explained that the flex is short and that’s what causes the problem, and by doing this method I am adding more length to prevent this issue in the future.
The other end of the cable is inside the display body and not accessible without disassembling it. The display is glued together.
Nice work iTouch! This is the exact problem i have on Mac 13 Pro
Really nice work not meny repair shops can do this they just put a new display on. 😍😍
nicely done!! given flexgate would fail eventually, would you recommend replacement of both as supposed to 1? I imagine the next one may fail soon?
@@organicaquaponicsfarmboonh4132 hi, I didn’t get any reports as for the second flex cable.
If it is working then leave it.
Very nice work.
Have to ask, how come you choose this method over replacing full cable?
Well, I would love to replace the full cable but, you see the cable if you saw the disassembly of the screen the backlight cable goes under the screen and in order to get to it you need to remove the LCD matrix from the case and not damage it and then you can replace the full cable.
See it’s very easy so I though to my self why go the easy route, let’s make this interesting and do this instead.
@@iTouch-repair Thank you for replying, that makes a lot of sense. I saw the replacement cable and the other end I thought would of made it an easier job. Now I know if I have to do this to do this method. Thanks.
Great video, I might give it a go ! But just one question, why don't you just replace the cables instead of soldering ? Thanks
Thanks.
The go underneath the screen and the backlight, so it’s impossible to do such a repair without damaging the LCD.
@@iTouch-repair Great job! I have another question, why didn't you repair the broken cable directly instead of using another cable to fix it? Thanks
@@John_Anno stay tuned for the explanation on my TH-cam channel.
Today will drop a video about this issue.
@@iTouch-repair OK!
Great fix! Do you think I could do that myself with some magnifier glasses? Or is it a MUST to have some microscope? What did you use to see what you were doing and record at the same time? THANKS IN ADVANCE!
Hi, all of the work was done under the microscope and recorded with a camera that is attached to the third eye in the microscope (trinocular microscope)
Back in the days before I could afford microscopes I used to solder under two magnifying glasses, but it was tough to work like that.
And in this flex cable the rails are very small that even if you could solder under the magnifying glass you need a very thin soldering head.
I would say it’s always fun to try new things. I know I did and it got me where I am now.))
Thanks for that question....been wanting to ask that too
This is a GREAT repair video. Thank you very much.
Great job, very professional
quick question, did you use a stripper to remove the plastic protection? THANKS :)
Hi, it’s a scalpel that you can buy at any painting shop
Thanks a lot :)
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us
Hello i have also this problem on MacBook and i want ask what tools you use to fix your MacBook. You can write me what tools i need to buy for fixing my MacBook? Thanks!!!
Great video, congrats!
Just a question, did you make the contact points here with pieces of solder wire? 10:57
Thanks.
I add solder to the copper rails so I can solder the wires on them.
Thanks for the answer. To melt the solder paste, do you use a heat gun? Can I get it any other way?
Great video, great repair. I definitely don't have the skill or confidence to try it on my own tho 😂
Might just buy a new MacBook air and call it a day

From Morocco, Excellent Work 🎉
I have the same issue with my Macbook and I really need to fix it too.
Hello, message me on Facebook .
Hang on a sec i didn't realise that half way through you need the smallest screwdriver in the world. In 5 more years i'll need a microscope just to find the screwdriver! So. i could only do what i could without that screwdriver. I found a fold / crease in one of the cables but i couldn't actually see a break even with the microscope. I tinned across this area with solder but no jumpers, it was one of the wider of the 4 cables. I think the other side also needs doing but i wanted to get the display off to take a better look. I only had a Stanly blade (box cutter blade).
After trying this one cable i put a strip of sellotape over the area and put it all back together. I usually use an external monitor, i bought the 15" touchbar this way to save money. Problem is doing osx updates. When you get to the next step you can not use external monitor!
Anyway. It's stopped flickering and now only one big strip centre left not working but before i couldn't read the screen at all, sometimes i could see a bit of it between the flickering but not really and not often. Now i can read most of it. I'll have to get the tiniest screwdriver in the world and try again to fix the last part of the screen / cables.
I was surprised how strong the flex cable was considering i only had an old box cutter blade! Nice!
What product do you apply just before soldering? Thanks for sharing this!
Hello, it’s flux. It helps with the soldering but, his job is to remove the oxidization from the solder and helps improve wetting between the two surfaces. This provides electrical contact and enhances the strength of solder joints.
why you put wire instead of solder directly or connected the cable with silver directly??? thx for the great video and explaination

Hi there, nice work, but what about the other cable? I was given a Macbook with both flex cables damaged. The wires are different and much finer, and more densely packed; hence more difficult to solder jumper wires. After much thought, I am thinking to bridge the 2 pieces with another piece face down on top. However, after market cables are not a perfect match.
Hi, the other cable is for camera and flood illuminator, and they don’t always need fixing.
How long it works?? Longer than original flex?;)

Very bravo sir!
I’ve just bought the blacklight cable, gonna have a go tonight in the help with your video!
Can I ask where you put 9:40, 10:44 and 10:50?

hi Li, did it work by following this video? I want to make same repairs on my own, any tips?
There is only 1 FlexCable for Backlight. the other flexcable is for camera and light sensor
Does this problem also happen with the 15-inch version of 2017?
Yes
Can't we just solder both side on their edges so we use only short wire or no wire at all (the solder tin connects them all)?
No, you need to solder them as each rail is assigned to do it’s job and make regulating the backlight possible
Nice job.
very enjoyed the video nice job too well done 👍
Hi, which tape you use to prevent damaging?
Hi, the tape, in the end, is Polytetrafluoroethylene Tape, the link in the description.
10mm width?
@@marianhopko4708 The one that i have is 13mm
I didn't get why you had to cut the cable. Was it un-attachable from the other end?
Please see the full diagram of the screen to understand how it’s connected .
Hi, what kind of jumper wire do you use? and which solder iron you have? That is very tiny.. i used 0,1mm wire, but looks 3times thicker. Middle 8 wires are straight forward... the ones on the side i dont understand. Looks like there are two more lines on the left and two on the right, where you connected the middle line... what is that, ground?
Hi,
you can use a jumper wire from a speaker coil.
or you can go online and search for a jumper wire for microsoldering.
the thickness should be around 0.010 0.030mm
the lines on the sides are ground so you will need just one will be enough.
the thicker rails on the flex should be jumpered with thicker jumper wire because they are power rails.
Where are you located? I have 2020 M1 Macbook pro with same issue. Flex cable is dented.
Where did you get the new cable and plug from, or do you have a part number for it.? Great video too , cheers.👍
in the description
Oi! What type of wire is used for the jumper? 0.1mm coated or uncoated
I think it’s 0.08mm coated.
Excellent presentation. Thank you so much
Nice video! What gauge wire did you use to repair?
you can use any wire from a phone speaker coil.
Thank you for the response, yeah I want to make sure I put a 'thick' enough wire on those outside rails. Also, are you worried about that superglue holding long term? Is the heat going to potentially be a problem?@@iTouch-repair
@@Swinky88 The super glue needs more than 150 C degrees to start melting.
as for the long term, there is no tension on the cable that could lead to a problem.
Question (respectfully asking): Why not just replace the flexcable?
That’s ok)))
The flex cable goes underneath the LCD, and to get to the flex I need to remove the LCD panel from the cover (the LCD is glued to the cover and it’s very expensive) and then try not to damage the backlight film layers and remove the flex cable.
If I could replace it I would’ve done it, it’s much easier to desolder couple of pins and solder them back than this.
con que le hechaste el estaño?? no vi bien
What is the green thing you applied after soldering? Thanks
Hi, it’s called a UV mask.
Can you please tell me the thickness of the cables you use? 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Why do you soldering wires instead of replacing whole cable? Why go super hard (and not very reliable as soldered cable will not be as much resistant as original) instead of super easy way just replacing whole cable?
Hi, as I explained before for many comments, the flex goes under the LCD, so in order to fully replace it I need to remove the screen from the lid.
Another reason for going super hard is, the issue in the first place occurred the flex is a little shorter causing this issue, and I am adding length to the flex to avoid this issue being repeated.
@@iTouch-repair is it doable? Can you remove it without damaging? I know that on TVs you can, I did it myself once, but Mac display is way smaller unit compared to TV.

Hi. Is only the backlight ribbon damaged or the camera one too? what glue do you use to connect the tapes? how much do you extend the tape compared to the original length?
Hi, as for the flex cable, I only replaced one. Sometimes the camera flex gets damaged and you replace it when damaged.
As for the glue, it's a super glue that you can find in any hardware store.
I extend the flex by about 2-3cm that way it doesn't get damaged next time.
which size jumper wire to repair flex gate? 0.1mm? or 0.05mm?
Hi, I think you can use each one.
I don’t know the exact size, I have mine as a coil from an old iPhone speaker.
Did you end up trying the repair? I'm scrolling through with the same question. I have .1mm in hand but I'm trying to figure out if I need another size for the outside wires.
would some proper sized heat-shrink tubing work instead of the tape?
It’s gonna add too much thickness and the flex won’t be able to move while opening and closing the lid.
@@iTouch-repair ok, so what kind of tape is that, automotive fabric tape? as in the kind of tape they use to wrap cable trees?

Why would you not just replace the entire cable with the new one, which you had in your possession? This does not seem like the way Apple would repair it if you brought it in shop. While it seems that you are very skilled and have professional tools, this is a ridiculous amount of difficult work, it seems the new joint be a weak point for future failure.
Hi, long story short, the flex cable goes underneath the screen, so to replace it from the roots you will need to remove the screen from the lid and replace it (you can search how to replace a screen on these models).
