Guys it's possible. Just had a sub-30 minute phone call with apple, and they are fixing my 2017 15" flexgate/dustgate (both issues, I was going to fix it myself) macbook for free! I believe I hold the speedrun world record for this (26:49).
Instructions: politely let them know that you know this is flexgate/dustgate and that it is a known design flaw. They might say that only applies to 13" models (my rep "misread" this and told me they will do the repair, and then "realized his mistake" after he had already accepted the repair). If that's the case, keep trying and asking for a new agent until you find a manager sympathetic to your problem. I think I got lucky and this isn't the first time he had "accidentally misread" the 13 as a 15. They know it's bad and they know you will keep escalating, so I think they are just letting it happen to stop wasting employee time at this point. Maybe they are working from home and don't have other staff constantly listening in, maybe they have a bunch of screens left in stock. I also think you have better chances calling after hours so that your call isn't routed to a busy call center in the middle of the day.

Hey guys, unfortunately as of 2021, apple refuses to operate on “Classic MacBooks” even though mine was the exact model they cited for the free recall. I escalated all the way and they said they don’t have the parts anymore. Really devastating, especially as a student who kinda uses their computer every day. I guess I need to start saving for a new one.
Thank you so much for being honest and transparent, something not even apple does anymore.

I had this issue too. I called and called Apple and bothered them. Many told me the cost of about $900 to replace display. I said you guys caused this isse. I, the customer, did not. Thousands of people have this issue. Just check the apple discussion boards. I hung up on maybe 3 agents until I got this very caring senior agent who said she will take ownership of the issue and she will get back to me.
Few days later got this email from her:
    "
    Hi Folarin,
I received approval for the exception to have the back light replace at no cost to you.
Will you like to do a mail in are bring it back into the store for repair ?

For a tiny little design change, the connector for the cable could have been placed in an accessible area of the display assembly and this would be a 5 minute repair consisting of just swapping out a cable that costs a few cents.

Finally a fix for the FlexGate. My 15in 2017 MacBook Pro had an issue with the FaceTime camera not working. Although I had someone from apple support(chat) acknowledge that it’s a “fairly common issue” and the fix was a screen replacement, my device wasn’t covered since it was a 15in model. And I’d have to pay for the repair.
Going back and forth with apple support, on phone was futile. They didn’t budge. I ended up using the laptop as is without the camera.

This is amazing, thank you! Before I found your video I was wondering why Apple wouldn't cover all the models this issue impacted, but after an hour on the phone, I couldn't get an explanation. Now that I know they've covered it in the past, I'm gonna call back (with a guy on my side to do some of the talking, because sexism is alive and well in customer support) and keep at it until they cover the repair. The fact that they haven't stated a reason why only some models are covered, even if the reason is complete bs, means that they really have no leg to stand on. Good luck to anyone else preparing for battle with Apple!

At first it used to only happen when fully opening the lid, but now no matter what the lid position is, the line are always there. Is this also a result of a broken backlight cable, or the other, center image cable? if it's the image cable, can the cable be just replaced? or could you used the same method to "extend" the image cable? as Paul said it's long enough.. thanks so much

Here is another cheaper solution. If you have the asurion coverage that covers all your home devices, they will fix this for you. They fixed mine and I only had to pay $99 as opposed to the $1000 apple wanted. They fixed it in a day and shipped it back to me. Asurion is phenomenal for cleaning up the mess Apple made even though Asurion had no obligation to do so.
Apple has been making things with cheaper materials and taking away features to charge extra for them. My gen 1 stainless steel apple watch was dropped hard like 100 times and works perfectly fine, has no damage. My gen 5 stainless steel’s screen shattered when I accidentally hit the wall. My 2015 13” MacBook Pro works as great as it did on day one, never had a single issue with it, not even something as little as any application unexpectedly closing. My 2019 15” MacBook pro got this flexgate screen only a couple years after I got it.

UPDATE: 10/23/2023, finally got the OK and dropped off my 2016 13” MBP to my local Apple Store. It looks like it’s still possible to get it fully covered even if it was purchased Dec 2016 and has “VIN” next to the serial number when they look it up. Was able to get the exception approved over the phone. They estimate I should be getting it back by the 28th of this month. 🤞

The main reason i do not perform such repairs is that camera cable will fail next. After camera fails, pinkbars flexgate comes and it does not really matter if backlight is working or not.

ive done this repair a few times the bootleg method before these replacement cables were available... i was about to say WOW that pen he uses is a GAME CHANGER how easy he was able to scrape off the insulation on the cable, until he started doing the original cable... lol. i guess whatever the replacements are made of make it super easy to scrape off...

Good job, might i suggest that you strip the screens cable prior to cutting the end off, that way you can use tape to picture frame the section you wish to strip but more importantly hold the delicate end down a lot more securely, the moment it folded looked like a butt clench moment :)

I went straight to Apple Store here in Dubai and my laptop was accepted and repaired under the flex gate program, no questions asked, no push back at all. I was afraid that they were going to push back because I didn't have the 2016.

This #flexgate issue is still continuing with my brand new 16" $6000 (Can) M1 (Max chip) fully spec'ed out MacBook Pro, barely used, less than 7 months old, meticulously handled, still under first year warranty plus additional Apple Care. I experienced this exact same issue, the screen began randomly going completely black, a day or so later, when I was lucky enough to get the screen to light up for a short period of time, a huge vertical stripe appeared about 3 inches wide down the entire length of the screen ... when the lid was partially opened I see the log in screen but it would go black again when the lid is fully opened. I have photos and have documented the run around (disguised as Apple Care). I'd be happy to provide these to you if you want to use it for an upcoming video to let new M1 / M2 MacBook users know that #flexgate has NOT been resolved ... it is still ongoing.
After describing the issue in detail to Apple, they seemed to play dumb ... (or maybe they are really clueless?) ... eventually had to do my own online research and stumbled across #flexgate and the several lawsuits including a 2021 Class Action Lawsuit. Learned that Apple has known about this since 2016/2017 and has fought tooth and nail to avoid responsibility, while ignoring their legal obligation to "disclose" and to "permanently remedy" the issue in future models. On the contrary, they deleted Community posts on the Apple Forum on this issue (according to the wording in the Class Action Lawsuit).
I arranged for a repair shipping box to be delivered to me ... and shockingly, the repair confirmation email listed a different (secondary) issue in the "Repair Description" and made no mention of the main "black screen issue", when I clearly told them that the main issue is the screen randomly going black. This makes me wonder whether Apple is purposely avoiding entering into their database any description that could connect to this "continued", "ongoing" #flexgate issue and perhaps are intentionally hiding all traces within Apple's internal Statistics that might prove this #flexgate issue has NOT yet been resolved! It's obvious that Courts, judges and prosecuting attorneys could possibly require Apple to hand over internal statistical data in future lawsuits. However, if this data gets buried within Apple's database and statistical reports ... then Voila, Presto Chango, the #flexgate issue can no lo😊nger be proven.
Apple then sent a thin, flimsy packing box that shipped to their Repair Centre in Vaughan, Ontario ... but without notifying me, I see from FedEx's tracking details that my laptop was re-sent outside Canada to Memphis, Tennessee, 2,152 km distance after already being shipped 605 km to Ontario, Canada (in that flimsy box) ... without anyone from Apple notifying me ... and presumably in that same thin, flimsy shipping box that Apple provided.
With Apple supposedly being on the leading edge of technology, I expect to be able to view photos of the repair, an online link to the exact replacement parts, and ideally they should provide overhead (top down view) video footage of the repair in progress. Owners who have doled out mountains of cash for spec'ed out, brand new Apple devices should be able to see the entire repair in progress (the way we are easily able to view open and transparent repairs on Louis Rossman TH-cam channel, iFixit TH-cam Channel, etc. If Apple backs its repair process, it should have no reason to hide the procedure from dedicated Apple users who are fully tied in to the Apple ecosystem. We should be able to see whether the work area is clean and free from dust (and donut crumbs), and how carefully the device is disassembled / reassembled ... exactly what replacement parts were added, etc.
Return delivery by FedEx was postponed, although scheduled for yesterday. I hope to receive it back today.

@Paul S How long have you owned your Wowstick? I bought my Wowstick kit about a year ago and the tiny cylindrical lithium battery died in it. Since the Wowstick is press-fit and glued together, I had to basically "can opener" the back end of the driver, where the the USB port is located, dig out the dead cell and now I have "Mehstick". I call it that because it's now basically hardwired to a benchtop PSU in order for me to use it 😞

Same failure in all of them, same bearing on the same gear. I'm planning on making a video on my own channel of taking it apart and seeing if I can fix it.
