I am a first time dog owner of a Shiba Inu since he was 2 months old. Let me tell you, I was NOT prepared 😂 I honestly think the only reason I have survived this little guy is because I’m so used to cats and he has a lot of cat like qualities. But he’s also extremely high energy and stubborn. He’s 10 months old now and I’m starting to finally bond with him and feel like he cares for me as his owner. Shiba Inus are not super affectionate in the general sense but they definitely find other ways of showing their love to us. My little guy does so by following me everywhere I go. As hard as it has been, I don’t regret choosing a Shiba Inu. They truly are unique dogs that will always keep you smiling. Love these videos, Cody. I am in the same boat being a first time owner but experienced handling dogs, and I would agree it is difficult cause of their cat like nature so I really want people to understand what their getting into. I’m someone who regardless of the difficulty if I commit to something I’m going to see it through, and I’ve adapted to Tory. She’s about the same age as yours too so hopefully the affectionate starts to kick in soon otherwise until then I’ll do what it takes 😂
My shiba was a little devil dog until he got out of his rebellious teen phase. He hit a year and it was like an overnight change. He is a very good boy now. His personality kept developing for several years.

We have been breeding Shibas for over 35 years and the video is really informative. There are 2 points that I would like to point out. 1 the Shiba scream is like a 4-year-old in Walmart. If you stop it when they first start it the action doesn't continue. (Think of a child in line asking for a piece of candy. If you give in and do it they will repeat that action again next time. If you don't they then next time in a store "they know " you will not give in to them). None of my dogs do the "Shiba Scream". 2 This breed has a prevalent health issue being glaucoma and every Shiba owner should test for it. Please look into this for your furbabies.

My shiba is literally the best dog I’ve ever own. He’s so smart, easy to train as long as you have patience. But I also think I lucked out cause my buddy loves kisses and hugs, cuddling is a different story lol
Yes. Exactly same here. Our shiba is The. BEST. I just love her. She's reaaally cuddly, she doesn't bark/scream, only when necessary (like playing, fooling around - but we're really enjoying it. It's like she's talking to us), really easy to train and we also love her stubbornness. We don't appreciate the tons of shedding and the fact that she's not coming back if left w/o a leesh and following a smell... 😑 Do you guys use any supliments/treatment for the hair? (I momentarily use fish oil, but after shedding she lost all that fluffy hair..)
Did your shiba have anxiety from being around people ? I just got one and she 4 months old , but doesn’t like playing or walking, she likes to hide in a corner .
@@cloud24z my mom’s dog that is a shiba inu loves people and wants to play and say hi. He sure is Not a one person dog like we were told when we adopted him into the family. Yes he does get stubborn when walking at times. But i just coax him a little and he listens. I am taking care of him since my mom cant right now while she regains her energy due to her thyroid. He is super energetic at almost 8 years old. He loves treats, vitamin D. He doesn’t bark but whimpers. He also is super smart especially with his meds he has to take but i keep trying different ways of hiding it in stuff. Not sure if he’s the only shiba inu to get a yeast infection but would love a better way to get rid of it for my mom. Overall he is the best dog and glad i have the patience to deal with him. Did i mention he’s super spoiled.
NICE JOB! We at Shiba Inu Rescue of Florida (Im a Chi-town gal living in FL) say this and more. They aren't the dog for everyone and surely not for a starter pup. But for those of us that understand, worship and couldn't imagine life without them there is NO other better breed. There are Shiba Inu Rescues all over the USA so please look into a Shiba Inu rescue near you before running to a pet store and supporting puppy mills. We all are highly experienced and help those willing to learn how to love a Shiba and even have them love you back. XO
Also I was always wondering, how do shibas do in those warmer climates places? Here in MN we have all four seasons and only a few months a year it reaches the 90 degree weather with humidity, and I limit bringing Tory outside
@@cody.taurus their thick coat works to keep them comfortable in most temps. My Black and Tan prefers cooler temps but my other two Red Sesames love the sun and often times are found napping in the sun. I'm with my Black and Tan in the AC set at 71!!!
I concur 👍 I had 2 rescues.?when last 1 died I started dog/house sitting cuz need the $. I miss my Shibas daily even though I luv my clients & their fur babies just as much. While I sit frequently I miss having dog of my own.
We are on our second Shiba. These are all so true. I was smiling the entire time. They are great dogs but they need consistency and lots of training. They are smart, generally not yappy, and I cannot stress lots and lots of daily training.
I am not a first time dog owner, and I did lots of research before I got my Shiba. I thought I was ready, or that I wasn't gonna have **such** a hard time, but I still had a big learning curve with my Shiba! He's currently 8 months old, but he did make me cry once, after a long day. You cannot emphasize how stubborn these dogs are! It has been really rewarding though to bond with him and see him grow. My shiba is so smart, and kind, but like you said: something simple like a walk or a training session turns into a whole show. Mine HATED his collar, and the first vet visit was quite the show. However, there is not a single boring day with him, and I don't regret him or the time, but it does take someone patient to help them along the way. I also got lucky that mine loves cuddles... >
As u go along in life & meet others who want to b new Shiba owners cuz urs is so cute (they attract attention, yes?), may I advise u share ur experience & make sure they have the time & lifestyle to handle a puppy, let alone a Shiba.! I was able to suggest to some that they consider an adult Shiba Inu rescue.
I have a 2 year old Shikoku. I DEFINITELY agree about the Stubbornness, Minimal Affection and Shedding. She is dramatic in other ways, but she doesn't scream. Good luck with your dogs.
When people ask me why Shiba’s can be so difficult to train, I always tell them it’s because they come from Japan - we don’t speak Japanese and they don’t understand a word of English.
It took mine FIVE years before he decided to cuddle. Granted, it is more me massaging, scratching and cuddling him, but dammit! He leans against me all the time. Isnt that hiw dogs hug?!? 😂😂😂😂
I adopted a 3-year old 'sesame' Shiba from our local animal rescue league. She is fantastic! But, she can be VERY stubborn. (1) Stubborn, but good on the leash. Will snarl and snap at other dogs we encounter in the park, but warms up to them quickly. (2) Cuddly. Loves close contact and will get next to me and nap and cuddle all day long. (3) Scream? Never heard it, but she does really HATE water and getting a bath. Love the breed- beautiful animals!!
My parents have 2 Shibas, my sister has 1 and I just got my own 2 weeks ago. Shes a 4 month old red. All of them have pretty much all of the characteristics that you explain, minus a few here and there. They really are special dogs that are unlike any other breed. People just don't understand until they have one of their own!
All true with our two but I love them. My Meeko had a Zen personality and he would show his affection on occasion and never thought I could love a dog more than him. Their antics are precious!
Thank you for making this video. I think it's great that you're honest about some of the reasons of why a shiba is not the best dog for everyone. People can just get their Shiba fix from your videos. 😃
Our first dog was a female American Eskimo, which is also not a great first time dog owner dog, so I thought I was prepared for a Shiba (my husband wanted one. I wanted a Pomeranian). Honestly, yes, Cooper the Shibe drives us nuts, but he’s so smart and such an INTERESTING dog. He has tricked both me and my husband to get what he wants. He has figured out that if he jumps in grass at night, he can chase out the little white moths that settle in spots. He watches fireflies like they’re a tiny fireworks show just for him. He tries to eat EVERYTHING but spits most of it out with a simple tug on his leash. He does the Shibe happy face with flattened airplane ears and a little head wiggle back and forth when we let him out of the crate in the morning or when we get home from an errand or whatever. He’s not a super snuggler, but he does give lots of kisses and will sometimes lay on my lap or against my side if he feels like it. These dogs are a lot of work as puppies, but I am so glad I decided to surprise my husband with a Shiba. Earning Cooper’s love feels like a true reward.
When 2 Shibas play together, it can look like they’re angry/mad/looking to murder each other, but that’s how they play sometimes…a lot of mouth play & vocalization. You break up the play thinking they’re fighting & they look at you like, “what, we were having fun.”
My Shiba Inu is 4 months old. Everything you have said is true. It’s a struggle to put a harness on him and once on, he refuses to move. I’ve tried to get him to sleep in my bed at night, he likes sleeping alone in the other room. He rushes the door every time I open the front door and doesn’t have any recall… yet. That said, he is very smart. The easiest dog I’ve ever had to potty train. Loves to play fetch. Gets along with other dogs and cats. Will jump in my lap to “check in” and then leave to play on his own. I don’t have any regrets. Training will come.
THIS is like you described my shiba inu, I feel you on all those levels. In 4 months we are getting a baby as well, I will hopefully remember to update this comment and let people know how he is going to be doing with a baby.
My Shiba is 14. She's been a trouble maker ever since she was a pup. However she had enough patience with my two kids when they were toddlers. Love her so much
Shiba's are like cats and definitely not a dog for a first time owner. My Scarlett is almost 13 now and is a great dog for me but for the first 9 years she was a handful. the fact that they are escape artists can not be stressed enough, I had a gate on my porch and she would sit at the window hoping someone would leave the gate open and she would be at the door and gone in a flash. The other concern (at least with Scarlett) is finding a harness they can not slip. Once at the vet she walked under a chair and in the 2 seconds it took her to walk under the chair she slipped her harness. The people in the waiting room were astonished. Shiba Inu"s are wonderful dogs as long as you are able to adapt to their personalities .
YES! Patience is a necessity with Shibas, with ANY DOG but definitely with the training, and handling stubbornness. They are easy to train, love to learn, but deliberately ignore you sometimes 🤣🤣🤣
I have 3 Shibas, Mom Dad an there Son. i know all about the stubbornness. The mom is a love me when i want you too (mostly if you gave a treat lol) . The dad he my shadow, but the most stubborn out of the 3. Also wants attention all the time. And there son could care less, he will play but prefers to do his own thing. Love how they all have there own lil personality. And your Puppy is adorable
So I have a 2 yr old shiba. Got her at 9 weeks old and started training her right away. I have heard the shiba characteristics before getting one. I don’t know if the training since day 1 or if she is an anomaly but I suppose we got lucky with our shiba. She likes to cuddle up every single day. There are times where I want to cuddle and she doesn’t but she cuddles up daily. No blood curdling screams. Just some light barks when she hears something outside our door. She is very trainable and is actually an off leash dog too. I feel as long as there is constant training (daily training for just 20 minutes a day) since day 1, shiba will be fine. I sincerely Bella dog needs training daily. At home or outside. Just a few minutes a day. They need reminders. Do not be afraid to own a shiba. Put forth the effort and you will fall in love
I am a shiba human. I adore the breed and I love my boy more than life itself. That being said, every one of these points hits the nail on the head. The shed, the scream, the antisocial, and the stubborn. Don't think you can "train it out of them". I'm fortunate that my boy is very receptive to me (hence why he's a service animal) but I have decades of training exotic animals (sharks, sea turtles, fish, hawks, snakes, bobcats, etc) so I know more than the average Joe when it comes to animal behavior. If I weren't as skilled, theres no way in hell my boy would ever be a service animal. If you love the breed but can't handle something so independent, find a friend who has a shiba and love it.

I have a first time Shiba Inu for 2 weeks now... everything works liek a charm... commands.. no problem... walking no problem.. heavy rain storm outside... walking no problem. Maybe i got one of a kind
I’m relieved to see others being first time dog owner of Shiba Inu so I’m not alone! I used to dog sit my friend’s shiba inu and the experience was great that I thought mine was gonna be similar. I’ 100% agree with the points that you mentioned! Another thing is that they aren’t as treat-motivated as other dog breeds (at least for mine) and her biggest reward is freedom and trust which makes it even harder for novice dog owners because it requires a lot of patience. I’m super grateful to learn and hear from different Shiba Inu owners, thanks for the video!

Our little 8 month old shiba princess is the exact same way! She behaves extremely well around guests, but is beyond stubborn with us. She is treat motivated inside the house, but has no interest in treats outside. Her ultimate reward, like you mentioned, is freedom. Like Cody's pup, it's almost impossible to take her on walks because she just stops in the middle of a walk if she's unhappy with the route I'm taking. I literally have to cut the walk short and carry her home. How have you guys been training your shiba pups on walks when they refuse to walk?

100% agree, they will always shed. One shiba is good about blowing his coat and stopping to a very light passive shed. But my female that’s older sheds a lot in between coat season. I think this must be based off of what breeding stock they come from. Also that same male is a cuddle maniac and she is just like yours. The most she does is rest her paw on my lap or sit behind me on the couch back.
WOW thanks so much for this informative video!!! I was going to get a Shiba but after this, NO WAY !!! I had pug 15 years she died a year ago my best bud loved everyone very affectionate, my traveling buddy, was my sidekick dancing sleeping etc. I don't know what to get
I had a Shiba for 14 years, she died when she was 15. Super healthy and beautiful. But all of the traits you mentioned above and one you did not mention. Many Shibas do not like other dogs or people. Mine was super unfriendly towards people - she would bite them if they touched her - it all had to be on her terms - if she came to you, you could touch her, if not, forget it. They have a very high prey drive, so forget Shibas and cats, although I guess it can work. They are super loyal dogs and hugely protective, I loved her to pieces. But I will not get another Shiba, they are quite hard work and I am older now and less patient. So now I have rescue dogs instead. But if you are prepared to put in the work of owning a Shiba, they are wonderful dogs!
Hey Maureen, your comment reminded me of our outdoor/stray cat. Our Shiba is so gentle but does not like to be touched. The cat was not raised with him, it was a stray we fed outside and eventually let in and out on a daily basis. Unfortunately it was killed by raccoons or some animal but it used to find us on our morning walks with Hoshi and follow us back inside. My profile pic has the two of them.
I’ve had 2. Mine didn’t bite, but the second one was afraid of hands coming at or over his head. After he passed, I saw a video on inate traits of Shiba Inus (only on 1 out of many similar videos) that this is inate. I thought he did it bcuz of his small puppy mill life b4 me. So, I recommended people, especially kids, approach him under his head. He wasn’t aggressive but he would flinch or back up. I tryvto remember this with other dogs, too. I think ur wise to know what u can tolerate. I was glad I adopted adult dogs 4 my life.
It is the battle between brains. Yours and the Shiba. Those who can wait longest wins. Your decripton of a Shiba was accurate. But they bound on their own way. My Shiba sleeps on my clothes next to my bed. He laughs and runs towards me when I get home. Wonderful animals that require you to understand their character and have patience.
Had a shiba for 18 years. Exact personality. Stubborn Shedding alot 4 times a year. Screams. Run away alot. Doesnt care to be hugged. Very Miss independant
I have a Shiba, you are right, my dog has everything you said. Shiba does not have cuddle personality, we learn to respect each other and my own space. BUT, Shiba cares for you so much! Once I fell from the stairs, he came over right away to protect me and be my side. It’s all from his heart. He also not afraid to challenge Kayoto. He basically stay up every night still dawn. Just make sure we are safe.
Loved ur video. Great job. I had a Shiba mix from 4 yrs old to 16 that was carmel color, then after Bear Shiba was Ivory like ur other one 3.5 yrs to 15. Similar personalities to what it seems like urs are. One (Bear the mixed breed) more typically affectionate to me & others. Keep socializing Taurus & I bet he’l b more like my second, Shiba. Shiba was very laid back, subtle expressions, showed his love & loyalty but also needed his space. He loved going to c Grandma & Grandpa & would jump/push my legs to hurry up. Run into their house, find them, maybe let them pet him. Overall, I got lucky with well behaved adopted rescues that had abusive & neglected lives b4 me. I’m not big disciplinarian, but I think I did some things right & never hit them. They bonded quickly with me. I’ve learned that trust & making them feel safe helps. Ur doing a wonderful job with them. Walking them daily & not letting them gain weight is key to longevity. Also, laughed every day when they would do their running & fetching play in my homes.
Love this video !! I have a 9 week Old. The stubbornness !!! It never wants to walk the direction we need to go, I pick him up and walk 20 steps and then put him down again. Then it is all good again. Love his crazy personality.
Keep up the good attitude & 😂. Sometimes though it’s tough when u want to laugh but u have to b the adult. My first Shiba mix took me few months to figure out he responded best to disappointed tone of voice, 2 pointer finger shakes , & walking away. But, mine was an adult.
Basenjis while barkless, aren’t mute. They yodel and chortle and are smart and independent like Shibas. I’ve had 3 Shibas, they’re not an off-leash dog and are escape artists. Shibas tend to be people-friendly and dog-aggressive. If a Shiba could only speak one word, it would be, “MINE!”
Great video! Of course not all Shibas are like this but its important for people to be aware of the more common breed traits and not just get a shiba because "its cute!" or because of the doge meme. My girl falls under all of your points in the video 😅 I love her though.
Bro! The clips had me rolling! All of this is true. I love my shiba and appreciate all of his behaviors. Yoshi only screams when "trying" to clip his claws.
Appreciate the concern and the efforts. But all except shedding can be controlled. If you have a healthy respect for the breed’s independent nature you can experience special bonds unique of the breed. Shiba is a breed that should be appreciated for almost telepathic bonds rather than cuddling. In Japan there was a saying about the breed and it’s “The breed chooses the owner.” A good head of the human is required to be chosen as a master of a breed. If you don’t smarten up quick, she will have a life without a master she needs. Try to gain her respect quick.
My Shiba is affectionate in his own way. Not cuddly, but he will come over and give you this look, and you know he wants neck scratches, and chest/belly rubs. He occasionally comes over and lays next to you or on your lap. Definitely on his terms. It's so sweet when he misses you he lays his chin on the edge of the couch, or if he's eager to meet you when you come home, he whines if you don't greet him right away. He definitely wants attention and hates being alone. He rarely does the airplane ears, but when he does, it's when he's meeting new ladies (he likes women better than men,) or when he has been at the dog sitters and greets us after a long absence. It's adorable. He rarely Shiba screams! Only if he's in real pain. He's a pretty tough little guy. Born confident. Wants to be the boss. He knows a few commands, but usually learns new things by observation. Like coming when called or knowing what to do at bed time. He was crate trained from the time he was a puppy. He tends to understand hand signals better than voice commands. He definitely does the crab leg thing when you pick him up. It's super cute and funny. He's a very fun dog, and such a character, but don't expect Lassie, or you'll be disappointed getting a Shiba. They are so stinking smart tho. Very hard to outsmart them! They have an excellent memory!
I am the person who has my second Shiba-inu. One thing all should know they are runners. If they get loose from their harness they run. Both of mine ran fast and I used a car and asking others if they saw a Shiba-inu. I kept a picture in my glove box. The second thing is they decide when they want a pet or sit beside you. The third is they love to be involved in your life on their terms. Can't help but love my little stuborn boss
My Shiba is 3 Months, we got him 2 Weeks ago. So far, he is quite a silent dog and very interested in everything. That’s when his stubbornness comes through and he refuses to walk any further. Good thing is, he just weighs 5 kg, now. Even my kids can hold him. But I think this is a very good video. Some of the aspects might vary individually, but you can’t really know beforehand, so these points are absolutely to be considered.

I feel so lucky that my little Shiba is very stubborn but also very affectionate and never tries to escape (she’s so good even off leash) when out at the beach or somewhere. But the things you said are all very valid and good advice. On the shedding though, whilst they do shed twice per year for 6 months, they are otherwise such clean dogs. This goes for my own and other Shibas I’ve looked after. She’s not stubborn on walks though, and if she refuses to move which is rare
My Shiba Inu is awesome. Extremely stubborn especially when walking him. He pulls foward when I walk him, his sense of smell his insane, he's dramatic, intelligent and a runner. I love you King!!!!
My husband and I are considering a Shiba because we want the closest thing we can get to a cat in dog form. I think Shiba Inu sounds like the perfect "cat-dog" breed ;) Also, the screaming thing doesn't bother us as we are used to foxes and their screeching and actually find it kind of cute xD
I have a Shiba named Kit (Kitsune) and I can definitely say these are super accurate but I would say she is the most fun loving, chill but also super affectionate and loyal dog I've ever had. Everyone mentioning cat-like qualities is totally correct on that but my doggo for sure loves to play above all with my family and other doggos too. She is also very tolerant and sweet. When I'm upset she is ALWAYS there like no other dog I've had. She literally sits her head on my lap or comforts me in some way until I'm better. I would highly recommend Shibas if you can handle the quirks and shedding.
Exactly! They’re amazing! So many dogs r in tune to comfort. My Shibas helped me thru hard times, too. It’s especially important, too I think if ur single even if u have roommates. My parents & I believe my girst dog, Shiba mix, was my first dog as a child re-incarnated in a 24 lb version. Same coloring, & personality. Amazing.
I know that they are "quirky", and I remember "dog sitting" a Shiba as a teenager for a family friend. So, when I adopted one of my own, I went in fully on guard.As an owner 3 years in, he started out like the stereotypical Shiba Inu, but over time, he's super chill(unless approached by another dog while eating), and loves physical contact and his "pets", and even while sleeping at night he sleeps close to me, and enjoys belly rubs, or even every once in a while if his position allows. You can place your arms around his front legs, and hold him close like a teddy bear.
I'm not sure if this is the case with others, but our shiba is also quite agressive towards small children and at this point, any other dogs. It's quite sad because you'll see some cute kid some towards her to pet her and if we don't intervene, there's a very real chance she will scare the hell out of the child with her blood curdling bark, baring her teeth, and if worse comes to worse, nip at her. Same with older ladies and visitors to our house. Also not mentioned, if we give her a high-value treat, she will guard it for days. And if anyone comes near the treat, she will dramatically high pitch scream. This video is spot on and probably needs to be more of these. I don't regret getting our Shiba, but man I did not know what I was getting into
I don't know how old is your shiba, but mine was something like that when he was younger I never had problems with treats that I gave to him, since he was a pup I tried to show him that I can touch his food and all that. But he aggressively protected treats from the cats to a point it became an issue. We cound't give treats to the cats with him nearby because he would attack. Also, like I said he has no problem I'm messing or even taking something I gave him, but if it's something he found (once he found a chicken bone in the street) maaaaaaaan, he'll fight you with his life for that and he doens't hold back... Also, until when he was about two, he didn't gave warnings that he was unconfortable with something, he would attack on the spot... A dog coming too close, middle of nail clipping, my leg going over him in the bed, try to pick him up (he hates it at home)... All of this was a direct attack, now days he growls to show he's unconfortable...
As soon as my life has more time, I will want a dog again and I have my eye on Shiba Inu's. I used to have an Alaskan Malamute and a Husky, so I am used to shedding and screaming and I grew up with an Afghan dog...who basicly is the most stubborn dog in the world. So hopefully I'm prepared enough for a shiba! Now all I need is a ton of time and space.
My Shibas are probably the most affectionate dogs I have ever owned. They lick and cuddle all the time (and they really do lick to show affection to humans and other dogs. It is one of their defining personality traits.). It really comes down to earning their loyalty. As much as they enjoy the freedom to run around my whole acre of property, they also know how to chill and "show off" when they go to other people's houses to visit. They just lay down and relax, even if I leave them in a kennel or on a leash. At home, they can be loud while playing, but when "showing off," they are super quiet, so much so that I receive complements on their wonderful behavior and receive requests to bring them.
I’ve had one for just over 3 years. He’s been picking up tricks very quick. He’ll lay on my chest while on the couch. I’ve never heard mine scream but he will bark on cue. Like any dog you get out what you put into them.
I adopted a shiba mix from the pound who was on her last few days. They didn’t even charge me an adoption fee. They Tom that no one “got her.” I’m so glad I didn’t overlook her! She has been the best companion. I’ve had her since 2010, so she’s a quiet old lady but still has that scream. She’s certainly not a cuddly dog, but she is definitely loyal.
Two shiba household here … we have littermates. Our sheebs are like night & day; the male is every bit Sheeb EXCEPT he is not a screamer. Stubborn, doesn’t listen, not very affectionate, and he’s quite the lump. His sister is all opposite except she will let loose with a bloodcurdling scream at least twice a week, & she is a drama Queen. BTW they are almost 11YO, & I have to say they mellowed out around 1 - 1.5YO.
Thx for this. Always wanted a shiba one day. I have 2 huskies and have fostered huskies and this is how most of my huskies are. Hair non-stop, stubborn and vocal. If anybody has owned a shiba and a husky, lmk how u think they compare. Thx.
My Shiba Kimiko will literally refuse to go in or even approach the trail head. There have been multiple times where I or my significant other just have to pick her up and carry her back to the house especially for morning walks and she is 8 yrs old now. The stubbornness never goes away. The one saving grace is she hates the cold as much as I do so she is good about coming back in the winter.
You are so on point. Shiba’s are not for everyone, I love my little Oki but lord knows some days he is a whole stubborn child!! Happy to have run into your channel. I love the Basenji as well.
Thanks for a great video! As much as I liked the video, I need to note that my Shiba (10 years old) is different. 1. She is incredibly affectionate. She loves to kiss (lick, actually) my hands and feet, she loves to be cuddled and petted. If I do not pet her, she would stick her wet nose in my hands! 2. My Shiba used to shed like crazy. Yes, the rooms and especially the stairs to the landing where she sleeps used to be covered in fluff, and the air filters and the vacuum were clogged with her hair. However, at some point about 2 years ago we decided to stick to raw food only: 90% chicken necks and 10% pork (including ribs). She devours raw chicken and especially ribs with pleasure. Very soon she almost stopped shedding! Yes, if you pluck parts of her coat, there will be some hair in your hand. But it is not shedding the way it used to be! Her teeth are ideal, no doggy breath, her body smell is not as strong as it used to be. Finally, obedience. I can show a video of my dog sitting before the bowl with chicken necks waiting for my signal. She can stay like that as long as I want her to. Yes, she is cunning and full of character. If she does not want to walk, she needs to be dragged. But soon she understands that walking is fun and succumbs. Last but not least: she likes cats and attempts to play with them. Too bad the cats do not trust her and leave.
I was about to blast you but what you said is true and accurate. This breed is STUBBORN. People don't research the breed and have no clue what they are getting into. Fozzie is my 4th shiba inu rescue. Thank you for your honesty ❤
My Shiba just passed away 1 month before her 16th birthday. Loved her so much. After the first 1 1/2 to 2 years, they will be one of the best dogs you ever had.
My shiba finally started sleeping on my chest/stomach when I’m on the couch. She’s 8 months. She doesn’t do this everyday but it’s a good first step. Also, Mine doesn’t scream.

1st time dog owner Got male Shiba inu puppy 9 months later he’s rehomed Miss him terribly but the pooping on bed, humping, mouthiness, zoomies late at night, eating grass and puking, destroying couch, waking up in middle of night screaming wanting to go outside and walk around in backyard at 3am......and many other things but very cute and aloof and interesting breed Really miss him though and let’s not forget the shedding everywhere
I have 3 shibas, I have had my intact male for 10 years now, bred him with a local female and got 2 of his sons. They are most definitely hard headed at times. But they are a very rewarding breed if you can dedicate the time to train them. I was injured and now I'm basically a stay at home dad so I am constantly around my kiddo and my shibas. The no cuddles thing tends to fade away, at least in my experience. One of my puppies is a cuddle MONSTER but all of them come to me for random cuddles. That said they will also have their moods where they want to sleep on the couch away from the rest of the family. Think of the cuddles like a cat. Some like to cuddle but ALL of them like to lay alone. The scream can be tapped down. They'll still scream if they are in distress but I tap that drama bs right out of them by reinforcing quiet behavior, especially when they're in a situation that they aren't 100% comfortable with.
LOL my Ahiba is SUPER affectionate, lol kinda cries and baries if i pretend not to see him. I love him:) I think it depends where you get them from. Hes always been great even as a puppy. Super clean and LOVE his toys, and blankets. Hes the best!
Shiba inu was my first dog. She can be the sweetest thing but also the most mischievous. She's more work that my three cats + lab combined! But I wouldn't trade her for any other dog
Yo!!! Not going to lie I have one and everything you said we have experienced. The only thing with ours is that she literally makes no sound at all. If you don’t see her you wouldn’t know we have one lol.
Excellent tutorial. So many animals get dropped off at shelters because owners do not take the time to find out about the breed. Animals are supposed to be a forever family member but that just ain't so. Pets are very dispensable if they become a bother. So thank you, hopefully this prevents a Shiba from getting dumped st the pound/shelters.
Thanks for the warning! My last dog had all of those issues except the shedding. She also had an insane prey drive: protecting other dogs and children made her exhausting to live with. Adopted from a pound, supposed to be a hunting breed. Thanks again.
I feel like for me, the Shiba's stubbornness, dramatic and scream, are things that are funny and cute but only when they're not your own dog. My Husky gets under my skin sometimes and my mom will be laughing her head off because he is stubborn in such a funny way meanwhile I'm fuming trying to get him out of the intersection

This is soo accurate! My son Khari is a 3 month old Shiba and he is so smart. He’s really stubborn but it’s definitely worth it. He’s my best friend. Please do your research though! Not all shibas are the same but the qualities listed are SPOT ON lol.
We have a lot of dogs and our shiba was the one we focused on the most. We gave her everything and bought her everything she needs. We raised her very well, she eats 3 times a day, walks everyday at 5pm, gives her all the cuddles and belly rubs she wants. Our only problem is she KILLED our Mini Pinscher. Our Mini Pinscher is still a puppy and she was really sweet and smart. We were all out by our pool and our Shiba and Mini Pinscher stayed inside the house. My brother went in to check on them and saw our poor Mini Pinscher lying drenched in blood beside our Shiba. After this we did a research and found out that shiba inus are dangerous dogs. Please know that we raised all our pets well. We are pet lovers, we have 10 dogs and 30 cats.
Oh my goodness this video is dead on!! Our Shiba Inua will be two years on August 31st. He could have made this video with you!! Absolutely everything you said is life with a Shiba!! We love our's so much, but Shiba's aren't for everyone. Also the Shiba scream is not for the faint of heart!! We heard our first Shiba scream two days after we adopted ours from his breeder, and it was something else. Such a big scream coming out of this little eight week old puppy. We literally warned our neighbors that we adopted a Shiba and they scream!! Oh and the shedding. Yes they shed twice a year; January to June, and July to December hahaha. Great video
Good and solid information. My shiba has been with me for almost 8 years now, and whenever I meet someone who shows an interest in getting a shiba, I would tell them the same. However, one thing that is on my top three reasons to not get a shiba is their unfriendliness towards other dogs, which can also be more of an aggression. Indie used to love making friends with all types of dogs, big and small, until one day when he was attacked by a female American Akita; a switched was turned on. Now he doesn't like most dogs, especially big male dogs.
That’s scary as heck! Akita’s are huge & so strong. I’d b afraid 😱 now, too. After it took a bit for my adult rescue Shibas, meeting others, & seeing many successful Shiba socializing videos I venture to guess ur pup’s current reactions r from the Akita attack. Very traumatizing. I’ve known couple dogs where exact same thing happened.
What age do they scream? I have a female puppy that is almost 3 months old that never screamed yet and doesn't make a lot of noise. She is super cuddler, she will hang out on your lap for hours or fall asleep on you on the couch.
Tory didn’t really scream until like 4-5 months but they will regardless of age I think, just depends on what they will be screaming about. Like if you accidentally pinched them they’ll scream at any age vs like a puddle getting them wet
pretty accurate, as far as the affection part , just like people each Shiba has it's own personality and level of affection, we have had some that will jump up in your lap and stay there until you asked them to get down, we had one that not only would she jump up in your lap to cuddle, she would tuck her muzzle under my chin to get even closer, she also screamed when we came home. Most will come to you when they want attention or affection, at the very least they all have laid at our feet, will give kisses and want to play ball etc. We have had Shibas for 16 years plus, we show them at AKC shows etc...

Well, am a owner of 3 Shiba and well, Cody is so telling you the truth! They are certainly a dog with personality and smart smart smart. I tell everyone that is looking at a Shiba for a first time... DO YOUR HOMEWORK!! I have had cats for years and well that helped with the training of my pups. My oldest, Sake he came from a terrible puppy mill which for a Shiba is TERRIBLE. He developed the worst food aggression. We have learned to live with it and respect his past. He is now going to be 9 this year and we have the best bond. They either think people have been placed on this earth for their needs (like my Lilly girl) or takes years to develop that bond and they allow others into their family circle. They are a wonderful dog and get better with age. They are a dog of repetitive nature and learn from that. My Sake has a HUGE vocabulary and knows so many words. Very affectionate towards me, love to cuddle and play with toys. Koda is my lil black and tan, he is HUGE for a shiba but loves every living thing (totally opposite of my Sake). Great dog but for sure do your homework.
I have a Shiba Inu and I can't complain cause I'm also very stubborn, not very into affection, I have a terrible hair loss problem (and everyone complains they find my reddish hair everywhere), I don't scream but I talk a lot, and I'm very dramatic. Basically, I'm a Shiba Inu and my Shiba Inu does a lot of things like me, people even said she looks like me, lol. My shiba Inu loves cats and she gets very dramatic when they don't give her attention and I feel that, I also love cats.
I am curious about getting a Shiba in the future, but I'm not sure if it's the right dog for me. My childhood dog was a German shepherd/Amstaff mix so he was high energy, intelligent, stubborn and very affectionate. What intrigues me with Shiba Inu's was the intelligent, their weirdness and their me-time and their unique cute look. I'm not getting one unless I'm 120% sure.
I love my Shiba Inu we have a cosmic connection he came from the other place to teach me and heal me his name is The Boujee Experience. My shiba inu is very smart he has FAKE BEHAVIOUR… he pretends to piss, he pretends to smell things, he pretends to drop toys, as soon as you believe him he springs one of his tricks
I am a first time dog owner of a Shiba Inu since he was 2 months old. Let me tell you, I was NOT prepared 😂 I honestly think the only reason I have survived this little guy is because I’m so used to cats and he has a lot of cat like qualities. But he’s also extremely high energy and stubborn. He’s 10 months old now and I’m starting to finally bond with him and feel like he cares for me as his owner. Shiba Inus are not super affectionate in the general sense but they definitely find other ways of showing their love to us. My little guy does so by following me everywhere I go. As hard as it has been, I don’t regret choosing a Shiba Inu. They truly are unique dogs that will always keep you smiling. Love these videos, Cody. I am in the same boat being a first time owner but experienced handling dogs, and I would agree it is difficult cause of their cat like nature so I really want people to understand what their getting into. I’m someone who regardless of the difficulty if I commit to something I’m going to see it through, and I’ve adapted to Tory. She’s about the same age as yours too so hopefully the affectionate starts to kick in soon otherwise until then I’ll do what it takes 😂

My shiba was a little devil dog until he got out of his rebellious teen phase. He hit a year and it was like an overnight change. He is a very good boy now. His personality kept developing for several years.

We have been breeding Shibas for over 35 years and the video is really informative. There are 2 points that I would like to point out. 1 the Shiba scream is like a 4-year-old in Walmart. If you stop it when they first start it the action doesn't continue. (Think of a child in line asking for a piece of candy. If you give in and do it they will repeat that action again next time. If you don't they then next time in a store "they know " you will not give in to them). None of my dogs do the "Shiba Scream". 2 This breed has a prevalent health issue being glaucoma and every Shiba owner should test for it. Please look into this for your furbabies.

My shiba is literally the best dog I’ve ever own. He’s so smart, easy to train as long as you have patience. But I also think I lucked out cause my buddy loves kisses and hugs, cuddling is a different story lol

Yes. Exactly same here. Our shiba is The. BEST. I just love her. She's reaaally cuddly, she doesn't bark/scream, only when necessary (like playing, fooling around - but we're really enjoying it. It's like she's talking to us), really easy to train and we also love her stubbornness. We don't appreciate the tons of shedding and the fact that she's not coming back if left w/o a leesh and following a smell... 😑
Do you guys use any supliments/treatment for the hair? (I momentarily use fish oil, but after shedding she lost all that fluffy hair..)
Did your shiba have anxiety from being around people ? I just got one and she 4 months old , but doesn’t like playing or walking, she likes to hide in a corner .
@@cloud24z my mom’s dog that is a shiba inu loves people and wants to play and say hi. He sure is Not a one person dog like we were told when we adopted him into the family. Yes he does get stubborn when walking at times. But i just coax him a little and he listens. I am taking care of him since my mom cant right now while she regains her energy due to her thyroid. He is super energetic at almost 8 years old. He loves treats, vitamin D. He doesn’t bark but whimpers. He also is super smart especially with his meds he has to take but i keep trying different ways of hiding it in stuff. Not sure if he’s the only shiba inu to get a yeast infection but would love a better way to get rid of it for my mom. Overall he is the best dog and glad i have the patience to deal with him. Did i mention he’s super spoiled.
My shiba is really affectionate too, he always sleeps next to me and won't get out of bed until I do. He cuddles too
NICE JOB! We at Shiba Inu Rescue of Florida (Im a Chi-town gal living in FL) say this and more. They aren't the dog for everyone and surely not for a starter pup. But for those of us that understand, worship and couldn't imagine life without them there is NO other better breed. There are Shiba Inu Rescues all over the USA so please look into a Shiba Inu rescue near you before running to a pet store and supporting puppy mills. We all are highly experienced and help those willing to learn how to love a Shiba and even have them love you back. XO

Also I was always wondering, how do shibas do in those warmer climates places? Here in MN we have all four seasons and only a few months a year it reaches the 90 degree weather with humidity, and I limit bringing Tory outside
@@cody.taurus their thick coat works to keep them comfortable in most temps. My Black and Tan prefers cooler temps but my other two Red Sesames love the sun and often times are found napping in the sun. I'm with my Black and Tan in the AC set at 71!!!
I concur 👍 I had 2 rescues.?when last 1 died I started dog/house sitting cuz need the $. I miss my Shibas daily even though I luv my clients & their fur babies just as much. While I sit frequently I miss having dog of my own.
We are on our second Shiba. These are all so true. I was smiling the entire time. They are great dogs but they need consistency and lots of training. They are smart, generally not yappy, and I cannot stress lots and lots of daily training.
I am not a first time dog owner, and I did lots of research before I got my Shiba. I thought I was ready, or that I wasn't gonna have **such** a hard time, but I still had a big learning curve with my Shiba! He's currently 8 months old, but he did make me cry once, after a long day. You cannot emphasize how stubborn these dogs are! It has been really rewarding though to bond with him and see him grow. My shiba is so smart, and kind, but like you said: something simple like a walk or a training session turns into a whole show. Mine HATED his collar, and the first vet visit was quite the show. However, there is not a single boring day with him, and I don't regret him or the time, but it does take someone patient to help them along the way. I also got lucky that mine loves cuddles... >
As u go along in life & meet others who want to b new Shiba owners cuz urs is so cute (they attract attention, yes?), may I advise u share ur experience & make sure they have the time & lifestyle to handle a puppy, let alone a Shiba.! I was able to suggest to some that they consider an adult Shiba Inu rescue.
I have a 2 year old Shikoku. I DEFINITELY agree about the Stubbornness, Minimal Affection and Shedding. She is dramatic in other ways, but she doesn't scream. Good luck with your dogs.
When people ask me why Shiba’s can be so difficult to train, I always tell them it’s because they come from Japan - we don’t speak Japanese and they don’t understand a word of English.

I adopted a 3-year old 'sesame' Shiba from our local animal rescue league. She is fantastic! But, she can be VERY stubborn. (1) Stubborn, but good on the leash. Will snarl and snap at other dogs we encounter in the park, but warms up to them quickly. (2) Cuddly. Loves close contact and will get next to me and nap and cuddle all day long. (3) Scream? Never heard it, but she does really HATE water and getting a bath. Love the breed- beautiful animals!!

My parents have 2 Shibas, my sister has 1 and I just got my own 2 weeks ago. Shes a 4 month old red. All of them have pretty much all of the characteristics that you explain, minus a few here and there. They really are special dogs that are unlike any other breed. People just don't understand until they have one of their own!
All true with our two but I love them. My Meeko had a Zen personality and he would show his affection on occasion and never thought I could love a dog more than him. Their antics are precious!

Our first dog was a female American Eskimo, which is also not a great first time dog owner dog, so I thought I was prepared for a Shiba (my husband wanted one. I wanted a Pomeranian).
Honestly, yes, Cooper the Shibe drives us nuts, but he’s so smart and such an INTERESTING dog. He has tricked both me and my husband to get what he wants. He has figured out that if he jumps in grass at night, he can chase out the little white moths that settle in spots. He watches fireflies like they’re a tiny fireworks show just for him. He tries to eat EVERYTHING but spits most of it out with a simple tug on his leash. He does the Shibe happy face with flattened airplane ears and a little head wiggle back and forth when we let him out of the crate in the morning or when we get home from an errand or whatever. He’s not a super snuggler, but he does give lots of kisses and will sometimes lay on my lap or against my side if he feels like it.
These dogs are a lot of work as puppies, but I am so glad I decided to surprise my husband with a Shiba. Earning Cooper’s love feels like a true reward.
When 2 Shibas play together, it can look like they’re angry/mad/looking to murder each other, but that’s how they play sometimes…a lot of mouth play & vocalization. You break up the play thinking they’re fighting & they look at you like, “what, we were having fun.”

My Shiba Inu is 4 months old. Everything you have said is true. It’s a struggle to put a harness on him and once on, he refuses to move. I’ve tried to get him to sleep in my bed at night, he likes sleeping alone in the other room. He rushes the door every time I open the front door and doesn’t have any recall… yet. That said, he is very smart. The easiest dog I’ve ever had to potty train. Loves to play fetch. Gets along with other dogs and cats. Will jump in my lap to “check in” and then leave to play on his own. I don’t have any regrets. Training will come.

Shiba's are like cats and definitely not a dog for a first time owner. My Scarlett is almost 13 now and is a great dog for me but for the first 9 years she was a handful. the fact that they are escape artists can not be stressed enough, I had a gate on my porch and she would sit at the window hoping someone would leave the gate open and she would be at the door and gone in a flash. The other concern (at least with Scarlett) is finding a harness they can not slip. Once at the vet she walked under a chair and in the 2 seconds it took her to walk under the chair she slipped her harness. The people in the waiting room were astonished. Shiba Inu"s are wonderful dogs as long as you are able to adapt to their personalities

YES! Patience is a necessity with Shibas, with ANY DOG but definitely with the training, and handling stubbornness. They are easy to train, love to learn, but deliberately ignore you sometimes 🤣🤣🤣
I have 3 Shibas, Mom Dad an there Son. i know all about the stubbornness. The mom is a love me when i want you too (mostly if you gave a treat lol) . The dad he my shadow, but the most stubborn out of the 3. Also wants attention all the time. And there son could care less, he will play but prefers to do his own thing. Love how they all have there own lil personality. And your Puppy is adorable

So I have a 2 yr old shiba. Got her at 9 weeks old and started training her right away. I have heard the shiba characteristics before getting one. I don’t know if the training since day 1 or if she is an anomaly but I suppose we got lucky with our shiba. She likes to cuddle up every single day. There are times where I want to cuddle and she doesn’t but she cuddles up daily. No blood curdling screams. Just some light barks when she hears something outside our door. She is very trainable and is actually an off leash dog too. I feel as long as there is constant training (daily training for just 20 minutes a day) since day 1, shiba will be fine. I sincerely Bella dog needs training daily. At home or outside. Just a few minutes a day. They need reminders. Do not be afraid to own a shiba. Put forth the effort and you will fall in love
I am a shiba human. I adore the breed and I love my boy more than life itself. That being said, every one of these points hits the nail on the head. The shed, the scream, the antisocial, and the stubborn. Don't think you can "train it out of them". I'm fortunate that my boy is very receptive to me (hence why he's a service animal) but I have decades of training exotic animals (sharks, sea turtles, fish, hawks, snakes, bobcats, etc) so I know more than the average Joe when it comes to animal behavior. If I weren't as skilled, theres no way in hell my boy would ever be a service animal.
If you love the breed but can't handle something so independent, find a friend who has a shiba and love it.

I’m relieved to see others being first time dog owner of Shiba Inu so I’m not alone! I used to dog sit my friend’s shiba inu and the experience was great that I thought mine was gonna be similar. I’ 100% agree with the points that you mentioned! Another thing is that they aren’t as treat-motivated as other dog breeds (at least for mine) and her biggest reward is freedom and trust which makes it even harder for novice dog owners because it requires a lot of patience. I’m super grateful to learn and hear from different Shiba Inu owners, thanks for the video!

Our little 8 month old shiba princess is the exact same way! She behaves extremely well around guests, but is beyond stubborn with us. She is treat motivated inside the house, but has no interest in treats outside. Her ultimate reward, like you mentioned, is freedom. Like Cody's pup, it's almost impossible to take her on walks because she just stops in the middle of a walk if she's unhappy with the route I'm taking. I literally have to cut the walk short and carry her home. How have you guys been training your shiba pups on walks when they refuse to walk?

100% agree, they will always shed. One shiba is good about blowing his coat and stopping to a very light passive shed. But my female that’s older sheds a lot in between coat season. I think this must be based off of what breeding stock they come from. Also that same male is a cuddle maniac and she is just like yours. The most she does is rest her paw on my lap or sit behind me on the couch back.
WOW thanks so much for this informative video!!! I was going to get a Shiba but after this, NO WAY !!! I had pug 15 years she died a year ago my best bud loved everyone very affectionate, my traveling buddy, was my sidekick dancing sleeping etc. I don't know what to get
I had a Shiba for 14 years, she died when she was 15. Super healthy and beautiful. But all of the traits you mentioned above and one you did not mention. Many Shibas do not like other dogs or people. Mine was super unfriendly towards people - she would bite them if they touched her - it all had to be on her terms - if she came to you, you could touch her, if not, forget it. They have a very high prey drive, so forget Shibas and cats, although I guess it can work. They are super loyal dogs and hugely protective, I loved her to pieces. But I will not get another Shiba, they are quite hard work and I am older now and less patient. So now I have rescue dogs instead. But if you are prepared to put in the work of owning a Shiba, they are wonderful dogs!
Hey Maureen, your comment reminded me of our outdoor/stray cat. Our Shiba is so gentle but does not like to be touched. The cat was not raised with him, it was a stray we fed outside and eventually let in and out on a daily basis. Unfortunately it was killed by raccoons or some animal but it used to find us on our morning walks with Hoshi and follow us back inside. My profile pic has the two of them.
I’ve had 2. Mine didn’t bite, but the second one was afraid of hands coming at or over his head. After he passed, I saw a video on inate traits of Shiba Inus (only on 1 out of many similar videos) that this is inate. I thought he did it bcuz of his small puppy mill life b4 me. So, I recommended people, especially kids, approach him under his head. He wasn’t aggressive but he would flinch or back up. I tryvto remember this with other dogs, too. I think ur wise to know what u can tolerate. I was glad I adopted adult dogs 4 my life.

It is the battle between brains. Yours and the Shiba. Those who can wait longest wins. Your decripton of a Shiba was accurate. But they bound on their own way. My Shiba sleeps on my clothes next to my bed. He laughs and runs towards me when I get home. Wonderful animals that require you to understand their character and have patience.

I have a Shiba, you are right, my dog has everything you said. Shiba does not have cuddle personality, we learn to respect each other and my own space. BUT, Shiba cares for you so much! Once I fell from the stairs, he came over right away to protect me and be my side. It’s all from his heart. He also not afraid to challenge Kayoto. He basically stay up every night still dawn. Just make sure we are safe.
Loved ur video. Great job. I had a Shiba mix from 4 yrs old to 16 that was carmel color, then after Bear Shiba was Ivory like ur other one 3.5 yrs to 15. Similar personalities to what it seems like urs are. One (Bear the mixed breed) more typically affectionate to me & others. Keep socializing Taurus & I bet he’l b more like my second, Shiba. Shiba was very laid back, subtle expressions, showed his love & loyalty but also needed his space. He loved going to c Grandma & Grandpa & would jump/push my legs to hurry up. Run into their house, find them, maybe let them pet him. Overall, I got lucky with well behaved adopted rescues that had abusive & neglected lives b4 me. I’m not big disciplinarian, but I think I did some things right & never hit them. They bonded quickly with me. I’ve learned that trust & making them feel safe helps. Ur doing a wonderful job with them. Walking them daily & not letting them gain weight is key to longevity. Also, laughed every day when they would do their running & fetching play in my homes.

Basenjis while barkless, aren’t mute. They yodel and chortle and are smart and independent like Shibas.
I’ve had 3 Shibas, they’re not an off-leash dog and are escape artists. Shibas tend to be people-friendly and dog-aggressive. If a Shiba could only speak one word, it would be, “MINE!”

Bro! The clips had me rolling! All of this is true. I love my shiba and appreciate all of his behaviors. Yoshi only screams when "trying" to clip his claws.
Appreciate the concern and the efforts. But all except shedding can be controlled. If you have a healthy respect for the breed’s independent nature you can experience special bonds unique of the breed. Shiba is a breed that should be appreciated for almost telepathic bonds rather than cuddling.
In Japan there was a saying about the breed and it’s “The breed chooses the owner.” A good head of the human is required to be chosen as a master of a breed. If you don’t smarten up quick, she will have a life without a master she needs. Try to gain her respect quick.
My Shiba is affectionate in his own way. Not cuddly, but he will come over and give you this look, and you know he wants neck scratches, and chest/belly rubs. He occasionally comes over and lays next to you or on your lap. Definitely on his terms. It's so sweet when he misses you he lays his chin on the edge of the couch, or if he's eager to meet you when you come home, he whines if you don't greet him right away. He definitely wants attention and hates being alone. He rarely does the airplane ears, but when he does, it's when he's meeting new ladies (he likes women better than men,) or when he has been at the dog sitters and greets us after a long absence. It's adorable.
He rarely Shiba screams! Only if he's in real pain. He's a pretty tough little guy.

He knows a few commands, but usually learns new things by observation. Like coming when called or knowing what to do at bed time. He was crate trained from the time he was a puppy. He tends to understand hand signals better than voice commands.
He definitely does the crab leg thing when you pick him up. It's super cute and funny.
He's a very fun dog, and such a character, but don't expect Lassie, or you'll be disappointed getting a Shiba. They are so stinking smart tho. Very hard to outsmart them! They have an excellent memory!
I am the person who has my second Shiba-inu. One thing all should know they are runners. If they get loose from their harness they run. Both of mine ran fast and I used a car and asking others if they saw a Shiba-inu. I kept a picture in my glove box. The second thing is they decide when they want a pet or sit beside you. The third is they love to be involved in your life on their terms. Can't help but love my little stuborn boss
My Shiba is 3 Months, we got him 2 Weeks ago. So far, he is quite a silent dog and very interested in everything. That’s when his stubbornness comes through and he refuses to walk any further. Good thing is, he just weighs 5 kg, now. Even my kids can hold him. But I think this is a very good video. Some of the aspects might vary individually, but you can’t really know beforehand, so these points are absolutely to be considered.
3 months! keep the training very consistent because I'm a firm believer that the earlier you train them the more it'll shape them. Good luck with your new pup and let me know if you have any questions!
I feel so lucky that my little Shiba is very stubborn but also very affectionate and never tries to escape (she’s so good even off leash) when out at the beach or somewhere. But the things you said are all very valid and good advice.
On the shedding though, whilst they do shed twice per year for 6 months, they are otherwise such clean dogs. This goes for my own and other Shibas I’ve looked after.
She’s not stubborn on walks though, and if she refuses to move which is rare
My Shiba Inu is awesome. Extremely stubborn especially when walking him. He pulls foward when I walk him, his sense of smell his insane, he's dramatic, intelligent and a runner. I love you King!!!!

My husband and I are considering a Shiba because we want the closest thing we can get to a cat in dog form. I think Shiba Inu sounds like the perfect "cat-dog" breed ;) Also, the screaming thing doesn't bother us as we are used to foxes and their screeching and actually find it kind of cute xD
I have a Shiba named Kit (Kitsune) and I can definitely say these are super accurate but I would say she is the most fun loving, chill but also super affectionate and loyal dog I've ever had. Everyone mentioning cat-like qualities is totally correct on that but my doggo for sure loves to play above all with my family and other doggos too. She is also very tolerant and sweet. When I'm upset she is ALWAYS there like no other dog I've had. She literally sits her head on my lap or comforts me in some way until I'm better. I would highly recommend Shibas if you can handle the quirks and shedding.
Exactly! They’re amazing! So many dogs r in tune to comfort. My Shibas helped me thru hard times, too. It’s especially important, too I think if ur single even if u have roommates. My parents & I believe my girst dog, Shiba mix, was my first dog as a child re-incarnated in a 24 lb version. Same coloring, & personality. Amazing.
I know that they are "quirky", and I remember "dog sitting" a Shiba as a teenager for a family friend. So, when I adopted one of my own, I went in fully on guard.As an owner 3 years in, he started out like the stereotypical Shiba Inu, but over time, he's super chill(unless approached by another dog while eating), and loves physical contact and his "pets", and even while sleeping at night he sleeps close to me, and enjoys belly rubs, or even every once in a while if his position allows. You can place your arms around his front legs, and hold him close like a teddy bear.

I'm not sure if this is the case with others, but our shiba is also quite agressive towards small children and at this point, any other dogs. It's quite sad because you'll see some cute kid some towards her to pet her and if we don't intervene, there's a very real chance she will scare the hell out of the child with her blood curdling bark, baring her teeth, and if worse comes to worse, nip at her. Same with older ladies and visitors to our house.
Also not mentioned, if we give her a high-value treat, she will guard it for days. And if anyone comes near the treat, she will dramatically high pitch scream.
This video is spot on and probably needs to be more of these. I don't regret getting our Shiba, but man I did not know what I was getting into
I don't know how old is your shiba, but mine was something like that when he was younger
I never had problems with treats that I gave to him, since he was a pup I tried to show him that I can touch his food and all that. But he aggressively protected treats from the cats to a point it became an issue. We cound't give treats to the cats with him nearby because he would attack. Also, like I said he has no problem I'm messing or even taking something I gave him, but if it's something he found (once he found a chicken bone in the street) maaaaaaaan, he'll fight you with his life for that and he doens't hold back...
Also, until when he was about two, he didn't gave warnings that he was unconfortable with something, he would attack on the spot... A dog coming too close, middle of nail clipping, my leg going over him in the bed, try to pick him up (he hates it at home)... All of this was a direct attack, now days he growls to show he's unconfortable...
OMG, giving ours a bath sounded like a frikkin' torture chamber. The screaming was horrible. Loved her for sixteen years , tho.
As soon as my life has more time, I will want a dog again and I have my eye on Shiba Inu's. I used to have an Alaskan Malamute and a Husky, so I am used to shedding and screaming and I grew up with an Afghan dog...who basicly is the most stubborn dog in the world. So hopefully I'm prepared enough for a shiba! Now all I need is a ton of time and space.
My Shibas are probably the most affectionate dogs I have ever owned. They lick and cuddle all the time (and they really do lick to show affection to humans and other dogs. It is one of their defining personality traits.). It really comes down to earning their loyalty. As much as they enjoy the freedom to run around my whole acre of property, they also know how to chill and "show off" when they go to other people's houses to visit. They just lay down and relax, even if I leave them in a kennel or on a leash. At home, they can be loud while playing, but when "showing off," they are super quiet, so much so that I receive complements on their wonderful behavior and receive requests to bring them.
I’ve had one for just over 3 years. He’s been picking up tricks very quick. He’ll lay on my chest while on the couch. I’ve never heard mine scream but he will bark on cue. Like any dog you get out what you put into them.
Straight up, Basenji may be "barkless" but they do yodel instead. Look it up!

I adopted a shiba mix from the pound who was on her last few days. They didn’t even charge me an adoption fee. They Tom that no one “got her.” I’m so glad I didn’t overlook her! She has been the best companion. I’ve had her since 2010, so she’s a quiet old lady but still has that scream. She’s certainly not a cuddly dog, but she is definitely loyal.

Two shiba household here … we have littermates. Our sheebs are like night & day; the male is every bit Sheeb EXCEPT he is not a screamer. Stubborn, doesn’t listen, not very affectionate, and he’s quite the lump. His sister is all opposite except she will let loose with a bloodcurdling scream at least twice a week, & she is a drama Queen. But as I type this, she’s cuddled up to me, while he is laying under our bed. It’s amazing how two dogs from the same litter can be so different! BTW they are almost 11YO, & I have to say they mellowed out around 1 - 1.5YO.

My Shiba Kimiko will literally refuse to go in or even approach the trail head. There have been multiple times where I or my significant other just have to pick her up and carry her back to the house especially for morning walks and she is 8 yrs old now. The stubbornness never goes away. The one saving grace is she hates the cold as much as I do so she is good about coming back in the winter.

Thanks for a great video! As much as I liked the video, I need to note that my Shiba (10 years old) is different. 1. She is incredibly affectionate. She loves to kiss (lick, actually) my hands and feet, she loves to be cuddled and petted. If I do not pet her, she would stick her wet nose in my hands! 2. My Shiba used to shed like crazy. Yes, the rooms and especially the stairs to the landing where she sleeps used to be covered in fluff, and the air filters and the vacuum were clogged with her hair. However, at some point about 2 years ago we decided to stick to raw food only: 90% chicken necks and 10% pork (including ribs). She devours raw chicken and especially ribs with pleasure. Very soon she almost stopped shedding! Yes, if you pluck parts of her coat, there will be some hair in your hand. But it is not shedding the way it used to be! Her teeth are ideal, no doggy breath, her body smell is not as strong as it used to be. Finally, obedience. I can show a video of my dog sitting before the bowl with chicken necks waiting for my signal. She can stay like that as long as I want her to. Yes, she is cunning and full of character. If she does not want to walk, she needs to be dragged. But soon she understands that walking is fun and succumbs. Last but not least: she likes cats and attempts to play with them. Too bad the cats do not trust her and leave.

My Shiba just passed away 1 month before her 16th birthday. Loved her so much. After the first 1 1/2 to 2 years, they will be one of the best dogs you ever had.

My shiba finally started sleeping on my chest/stomach when I’m on the couch. She’s 8 months. She doesn’t do this everyday but it’s a good first step. Also, Mine doesn’t scream.

cats are actually more cuddly than most dogs tbh, it's just that most of them don't get upset at being alone either

I have 3 shibas, I have had my intact male for 10 years now, bred him with a local female and got 2 of his sons. They are most definitely hard headed at times. But they are a very rewarding breed if you can dedicate the time to train them.
I was injured and now I'm basically a stay at home dad so I am constantly around my kiddo and my shibas.
The no cuddles thing tends to fade away, at least in my experience. One of my puppies is a cuddle MONSTER but all of them come to me for random cuddles. That said they will also have their moods where they want to sleep on the couch away from the rest of the family. Think of the cuddles like a cat. Some like to cuddle but ALL of them like to lay alone.
The scream can be tapped down. They'll still scream if they are in distress but I tap that drama bs right out of them by reinforcing quiet behavior, especially when they're in a situation that they aren't 100% comfortable with.
LOL my Ahiba is SUPER affectionate, lol kinda cries and baries if i pretend not to see him. I love him:) I think it depends where you get them from. Hes always been great even as a puppy. Super clean and LOVE his toys, and blankets. Hes the best!
Shiba inu was my first dog. She can be the sweetest thing but also the most mischievous. She's more work that my three cats + lab combined! But I wouldn't trade her for any other dog
Yo!!! Not going to lie I have one and everything you said we have experienced. The only thing with ours is that she literally makes no sound at all. If you don’t see her you wouldn’t know we have one lol.
Excellent tutorial. So many animals get dropped off at shelters because owners do not take the time to find out about the breed. Animals are supposed to be a forever family member but that just ain't so. Pets are very dispensable if they become a bother. So thank you, hopefully this prevents a Shiba from getting dumped st the pound/shelters.

My last dog had all of those issues except the shedding. She also had an insane prey drive: protecting other dogs and children made her exhausting to live with. Adopted from a pound, supposed to be a hunting breed.

I feel like for me, the Shiba's stubbornness, dramatic and scream, are things that are funny and cute but only when they're not your own dog. My Husky gets under my skin sometimes and my mom will be laughing her head off because he is stubborn in such a funny way meanwhile I'm fuming trying to get him out of the intersection

This is soo accurate! My son Khari is a 3 month old Shiba and he is so smart. He’s really stubborn but it’s definitely worth it. He’s my best friend.
Please do your research though! Not all shibas are the same but the qualities listed are SPOT ON lol.
We have a lot of dogs and our shiba was the one we focused on the most. We gave her everything and bought her everything she needs. We raised her very well, she eats 3 times a day, walks everyday at 5pm, gives her all the cuddles and belly rubs she wants. Our only problem is she KILLED our Mini Pinscher. Our Mini Pinscher is still a puppy and she was really sweet and smart. We were all out by our pool and our Shiba and Mini Pinscher stayed inside the house. My brother went in to check on them and saw our poor Mini Pinscher lying drenched in blood beside our Shiba. After this we did a research and found out that shiba inus are dangerous dogs. Please know that we raised all our pets well. We are pet lovers, we have 10 dogs and 30 cats.
Oh my goodness this video is dead on!! Our Shiba Inua will be two years on August 31st. He could have made this video with you!! Absolutely everything you said is life with a Shiba!! We love our's so much, but Shiba's aren't for everyone. Also the Shiba scream is not for the faint of heart!! We heard our first Shiba scream two days after we adopted ours from his breeder, and it was something else. Such a big scream coming out of this little eight week old puppy. We literally warned our neighbors that we adopted a Shiba and they scream!! Oh and the shedding. Yes they shed twice a year; January to June, and July to December hahaha. Great video
Good and solid information. My shiba has been with me for almost 8 years now, and whenever I meet someone who shows an interest in getting a shiba, I would tell them the same. However, one thing that is on my top three reasons to not get a shiba is their unfriendliness towards other dogs, which can also be more of an aggression. Indie used to love making friends with all types of dogs, big and small, until one day when he was attacked by a female American Akita; a switched was turned on. Now he doesn't like most dogs, especially big male dogs.
That’s scary as heck! Akita’s are huge & so strong. I’d b afraid 😱 now, too. After it took a bit for my adult rescue Shibas, meeting others, & seeing many successful Shiba socializing videos I venture to guess ur pup’s current reactions r from the Akita attack. Very traumatizing. I’ve known couple dogs where exact same thing happened.
What age do they scream? I have a female puppy that is almost 3 months old that never screamed yet and doesn't make a lot of noise. She is super cuddler, she will hang out on your lap for hours or fall asleep on you on the couch.
Tory didn’t really scream until like 4-5 months but they will regardless of age I think, just depends on what they will be screaming about. Like if you accidentally pinched them they’ll scream at any age vs like a puddle getting them wet

pretty accurate, as far as the affection part , just like people each Shiba has it's own personality and level of affection, we have had some that will jump up in your lap and stay there until you asked them to get down, we had one that not only would she jump up in your lap to cuddle, she would tuck her muzzle under my chin to get even closer, she also screamed when we came home. Most will come to you when they want attention or affection, at the very least they all have laid at our feet, will give kisses and want to play ball etc. We have had Shibas for 16 years plus, we show them at AKC shows etc...

Well, am a owner of 3 Shiba and well, Cody is so telling you the truth! They are certainly a dog with personality and smart smart smart. I tell everyone that is looking at a Shiba for a first time... DO YOUR HOMEWORK!! I have had cats for years and well that helped with the training of my pups. My oldest, Sake he came from a terrible puppy mill which for a Shiba is TERRIBLE. He developed the worst food aggression. We have learned to live with it and respect his past. He is now going to be 9 this year and we have the best bond. They either think people have been placed on this earth for their needs (like my Lilly girl) or takes years to develop that bond and they allow others into their family circle. They are a wonderful dog and get better with age. They are a dog of repetitive nature and learn from that. My Sake has a HUGE vocabulary and knows so many words. Very affectionate towards me, love to cuddle and play with toys. Koda is my lil black and tan, he is HUGE for a shiba but loves every living thing (totally opposite of my Sake). Great dog but for sure do your homework.

Basically, I'm a Shiba Inu and my Shiba Inu does a lot of things like me, people even said she looks like me, lol. My shiba Inu loves cats and she gets very dramatic when they don't give her attention and I feel that, I also love cats.
I am curious about getting a Shiba in the future, but I'm not sure if it's the right dog for me.
My childhood dog was a German shepherd/Amstaff mix so he was high energy, intelligent, stubborn and very affectionate.
What intrigues me with Shiba Inu's was the intelligent, their weirdness and their me-time and their unique cute look.
I'm not getting one unless I'm 120% sure.
I love my Shiba Inu we have a cosmic connection he came from the other place to teach me and heal me his name is The Boujee Experience.
My shiba inu is very smart he has FAKE BEHAVIOUR… he pretends to piss, he pretends to smell things, he pretends to drop toys, as soon as you believe him he springs one of his tricks
