Congrats ! I got mine a couple of weeks ago , I really like it ! As the tool itself is precious , 90% of the time I carry mine in a custom wet molded pouch ( clip and tip down ) . The main reason for this , I would purely hate to lose it ! If I could have a wish , it would that the tool would be able to use “ T” shank/ SDS jigsaw blades .

The one thing that made me most hesitant to buy a Victorinox multitool is the absence of a pocket clip, I’m not big into sheaths. Love that they made something that will work with older models rather than try to make everyone buy a new multitool. I think I’ll be buying one soon. Thanks for the video!

Nice update to a good multitool.
The scissors do open up wider for one off cuts! You pull on the open scissor arm and the cam allows for this and you get a very powerful cut for string or chord.

Have the MX and it is excellent. Also have a Wave + and something I think might be important regarding the pocket clips. The Wave + clip is actually defective in that its placement allows the Wave to open in the pocket because of how it is configured. If you are active, the Wave will open in your pocket. The MX on the other hand due to where they placed the pocket clip prevents the MX from opening in the pocket. Threw away my Wave + clip and just carry in the pocket. MX pocket clip is excellent.

    Dear Ben,
2 notes on your fantastic review.
    1) It is quite easy to open scissors wider, past the first line of the spring resistance without damage.
    2) In my opinion the Spirit saw is much faster than replaceable LT Surge (I dońt have Wave) because it bites in both directions.
    Thanks

  • @willh1755
    @willh1755 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Hey Ben,
I've watched a bunch of your videos over the last few months, as I've re-discovered my interest in multi-tools, and I gotta say: along with Jon Gadget and Felix Immler, you put out some of the best, consistent, most informative content on this kind of subject matter that I think I've seen lately. So, thanks for that!
I wanted to expand on some ideas / thoughts that I have seen you and/or other express in your videos / comments when it comes to the 'Leatherman vs Victorinox' comparisons.
While I, personally, am not as "big" on the idea of carrying extra bits/tools/accessories for a multi-tool, I get that it can be useful. In this regard, it is worth mentioning, because i'm not sure if you or my fellow commenters have before, that: - a standard 3/16" or 1/4" (hex) bit adapter can fit on any Swisstool or Swiss Army Knife's bottle opener if "placed diagonally." Meaning you could use 3/16" or 1/4" standard bits fairly easily with a Victorinox!! I'm not sure if you know what I mean, but you can test it for yourself. I think Felix Immler demonstrates this in his video on uses of the bottle opener / cap lifter.
In this case, a Victorinox Swisstool can further "close the gap," imo, on the Leatherman Wave/Charge/Surge. If you take into account that the Vics are lighter weight (about 30-50 grams) compared to their "direct" competition on the Leatherman side, i'd say adding bits ("10 pack") to each tool (standard + adapter for Vic. Leatherman proprietary for LM), they'll probably end up comparable in mass, while Victorinox could have the edge due to the versatility of the more conventional bits.
So, if you were to do this... I think Swisstools can now have another advantage. Especially the new 'MX' one-handed models. There would be little-to-nothing missing from the Swisstools. Imo, the diamond file and serrated blade of LM would be really cool to have, but are not necessarily imperative. Conversely, I believe that the awl and wood chisel are two huge missing tools for Leatherman (Wave & Charge specifically)... particularly for outdoor/survival/all-aroung purposes.
I love my Leatherman Wave, especially when it's -15c and I am working outside. It has a few advantages that can't be understated, imo, like the one-handed opening tools. However, now that Victorinox has come out with these 'MX' models... man, I starting to think... if i'm torn between my Leatherman and Swisstools right now, I might not be after getting a Victorinox with one-handed capabilities.
Don't get me wrong, i'd take a LM Wave/Surge or Swisstool X / Spirit X (even a SAK like Swisschamp) any day, especially if my life depended on it! I don't really even consider anything other than these brands/models, tbh. Top class!
Sorry for the long commentary, sir. Lol! Have a nice day!

      @@txtoolcrib Hey Ben,
So, here's the Felix Immler video clip that I was talking about ( th-cam.com/video/5mKeNQYLamw/w-d-xo.html ) that shows how to use the 1/4" square-to-hex bit adapter on a Victorinox.
      Upon review:
      - I tested it again on a SAK Handyman, the Swisstool X, and the Spirit X. I'd say it's more of a "legitimate fit" on the Swisstools as opposed to the SAKs, but will work okay on the knives in a pinch.
      - It works relatively cleanly (i.e. tight fit) using the bottle opener on the Swisstool X. However, because of the thicker steel on the Spirit X bottle opener, the better fit on that model would be putting the adapter on the wood chisel/package opener tool. Very tight.
Worth trying and considering a demonstration in your upcoming 'Leatherman Wave vs Swisstool Spirit MX' comparison video, I'd say!

    - high rust resistance
    - softer steel easily to sharpen
-softer steel also will bend and not break
    - more compact
    - ergonomic handle
    - will not be pinch by the closing plier accidentally like wave
    - like the shiny finish of spirit than wave; look more elegant and cleaner

Hello, Ben - great review! Looking forward to your comparison review of the Wave + and the MX...the one thing that will keep the W+ slightly ahead of the VMX will be the cutters...I do not see V. re-engineering their plier heads and everything that goes with such a change any time soon, other than the change that you described in this video...the clip and the "one-hand" opening that they did was based on great demand; I do not think it is part of their corporate culture...their response was make the tools and clips and charge a hefty price for them...and they are selling, regardless of the price, like hot cakes, so far...the W+ has more tools that can be opened one - handed, as you well know, and their warranty is great...I have never upgraded to the W+, because I wanted more tools, so I upgraded to the Surge...also, I had heard that there have been QC problems with the W+, which I have not had with the "New Wave"(Gen. 2)...(advantage VMX)...I like the NW in part because it does have more plier real estate and I'm careful how I use the cutters...also, additional tools can be attached to the Wave(and the Surge) which the MX and the Swisstool can't do...

Early rewievs on the victorinox webpage ( mostly in German and French so far) seem to indicate a common problem with the clip attachement: the screw shears off easily even when tightened with moderate force. I exchanged it from Amazon, got another copy with the same issue. The plier play is just too much so the pliers don’t cut stranded thin wires very well. Based on your experience (since you have a few Spirits), is it a common thing? More importantly, is your copy of the new MX like that? The reverse orientation of Victorinox pliers makes no sense in unscrewing a bolt normally with the pliers parallel to the plane.
but it only makes sense to unscrew a bolt with the tip of the caliper vertically to the plane.
in this case it certainly increases the strength of the pliers and reduces the stress on the pivot

      @txtoolcrib  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I have done one early on to show people my simple setup for camera and lighting, but it wouldn’t hurt to go a bit more in depth. I will say that I usually don’t operate off a script very often. Sometimes I will have several takes, usually because of background noise or I didn’t word something exactly how I had intended. This particular video was done in one take on three different segments. I find it is easier to do things in segments than just straight through, gives me time to collect my thoughts to relay all of the information I intended. Most of the work is not actually the commentary in a video, it is getting the camera angles, lighting, and sound just right. Hopefully my videos have improved over time. I may make a video of the actual process of making a video, that could be very helpful for aspiring TH-camrs out there that are trying to get started. Honestly, that would have been very helpful for me when I got started.

The wiggle on that clip does not live up to the high quality of design and manufacturing on the Spirit as a whole. Its enough to dissuade me from purchasing the clip model.

You carry the knife pointing upwards.
Just imagine it opens a little because of the protruding "catch mechanism" catching s.th. without noticing.
Next step: you want to use your tool, without looking of course.
excuse my poor english, i hope you understand my thoughts.
In my opinion no improvement at all.

Typical Swiss tool. It works very well but nothing is innovative, at least not like Leatherman innovation. I’d still go with Leatherman.

The blade it is too small

Also the design is pretty smart. At one side you have the wood tools (saw blade, owl, chisel and knife) and at the other side the metal tools (screw drivers, metal file)
For me it's much superior in design, quality and ergonomics to the Leatherman signal, Micra and squirt ps4 that I also have. Only the Leatherman juice I think is as good as this victorinox. Is small but with many tools and great quality and design too. The other Leatherman are kind of disappointed.
I don't know the wave but looks like a big piece of metal ramdonly design with plenty of hot spots (like the signal) instead of this elegant, ergonomic and well thoroughly designed victorinox.

Of course they put the clip on the wrong side... Leatherman does the exact same thing and it baffles me

LOL victorinox are infamous for preferring lefties. Their 111mm and 130mm knives and even the folding paring knife have liner locks that favour lefties.

@@lvhdmya4807 It's not even a problem of left or right hand: the clip placement just doesn't make sense. At least on something like the Skeletools, the clip is on the opposite side of the knife so you can actually access the knife without flipping the tool around. The other problem is that both this clip and Leatherman clips that are *meant* for right hand carry have the clip on the wrong handle, causing the tool to gyrate in the pocket lol. Clips should always be opposite side and opposite handle from the blade (or whatever one-hand opening tool is considered the primary one).

the Nox is a beautiful piece of kit. Leatherman is good but I always feel its rough around the edges, metaphorically speaking. Scissors are ass. And I hate it when all the tools come out at once. Also you have to open it to get to them. The nox is like a precision made tool.
