After having my first 3 waves break or fail on me within a year, I decided to go the Swiss route.
Its 17 years later and that same tool still works hard. Nothing has broken except for worn out sheaths. I bought myself the swisstool X as a backup around 5 years ago ... Its still in the cupboard as the spirit has no end. NOTHING will beat a Victorinox over time. Get yourself one.

I’m an electronics technician and daily carry the Spirit X. Definitely my favourite tool all round. Although various leatherman tools definitely have some better features, the Spirit feels significantly better in your hand and fits better in a pocket.
I also followed a online guide and put a Leatherman pocket clip on my SpiritX, as it fits well in a pocket and it’s helpful to be at the top.
I think my only two complaints is the scissors as you said, and the pliers having grooves for stripping cable. Those grooves don’t function well for the very thin cables I work with in the security, fire or data industries. A flat blade would be much more useful.

Recently dipped my toe in the multi-tool pool, and got right back out.
    • Got a recent Free P4 and was disappointed with the (slight) blade play and _raggedly_ cut opening holes, especially for the price...besides the shorter tools and lack of bit driver.
    • Picked up a recent Wave Plus instead, and was treated to far worse blade play. The lockbars were at 100% and still weren't pushing the blades/tools against the tiny stop tabs. I'm not an engineer and could see the problems and solutions for improving it. Also, the tool lock mechanism for when you're using pliers was too long and would "catch" the opening hole when trying to thumb-open the serrated blade...I had to file down the locking tab.
Was really disappointed, especially since they tend to be the best-regarded MT. I'll check back in with them in a few years to see if they've fixed their engineering and QC.

Another thing to consider for my fellow Europeans when you compare the victorinox's multi-tools to the leatherman's, is that usually the leatherman's are more expensive for us than the victorinox's (because of import I think). So if you take a leatherman you might pay more for an inferior model to what you could have gotten with victorinox for almost the same price.

Way back when, I picked up a leatherman PST-II that had a feature I wish was on all leatherman MTs - on one side of the file tool is diamond coating (feels like 200-300 grit) with a groove for fish hooks and pointed tools. That alone often means it's in my pack when I go camping/hiking/fishing/etc for field sharpening. I don't love the rest of the tool because my particular PST-II doesn't have locking tools (which I think they changed on subsequent runs of the pst) and isn't the most diverse toolset. If leatherman and other mt manufacturers were to add that option I think it would significantly increase the utility of the item.

I always thought if I bought a Leatherman it would be the Wave. Then the Spirit X came out and there has never been a need to buy the Wave. Plus a Wave is like AU$250 on the LM website and a Spirit is less than AU$180. Scissors spring can be ground down a bit at the end to aid a wider opening, but it is still limited. I too prefer the standard Vic scissors like the 91mm version used on the full sized Swisstool. Best thing, NO TOOL CLUMPING. It's the thing I hate most about Leatherman tools. Kinda wish they just made the Spirit the standard model and had a larger and smaller version.

I use a multi tool everyday the only reason I use Gerber is for the plier ease of access i alot of occasions have to open one handed and its easy to just slap that sucker open..especially fishing comes in handy..Im no gerber fan but I use the gerber diesel..literally everyday....i have others just pliers for me...and yea the wire cutters aren't the best with it...for me its all one hand operation....but i do like that victoronox....might have to get....

Great. I’m using the serrated one with an Opinel. So I can eat and work in the best condition. And last but not least, I can open a bottle of wine. I’m french. 👌🥖

I see it as a classy multi tool. Something you would pull out of a messenger bag at a business meeting to fix something or a ladies purse rather than something like a black Leatherman surge

I’ve got the spirit x with the ratchet attachment and bit set. The ratchet is excellent. It takes standard bits and blows the Gerber away. Totally agree re the main blade. Not sure why Victorinox sticks with the crappy Swiss Army knife blade on a multi tool.

I have my dad's older Vic MT, a different model. Nice but a little tight in the pliers. Like him, I prefer carrying a small SAK and use real tools for everything at home or work. I like MTs but I rarely reach for them; I'm probably better off carrying a SAK and having a nice pair of pliers in my bag. I've been looking at Knipex's lately... Time for a pliers video Pete!

Victorinox tools are much more comfortable in the hand than Gerber or Leatherman. Leatherman seems a bit more robust, but multitools are supposed to be there to get you out of trouble when the proper tool is not to hand, not as a substitute for the correct tool. I have a variety of these multitools but the Victorinox is the one I carry every day.

Actually, the MP-600 is quite good. Especially, if you need to grab on large diameter stuff a lot. Handle splay on LM is terrible. Also, quite sadly LM have gone up in price quite a bit while QC has gone down (That is double-bad if you are outside of the US, where warranty access is worse and prices are even higher). On my surge the lock on the main-blade and the scissors does not engage unless you are really forcing it and I needed to sand down sharp-corners on the handle.
Of course I'm still hoping for a signal with 4 outside tools, that would be awesome. You would loose 1 small tool but gain the tap-hammer compared to the Wave/Charge. Or they could make Wave 3.0 with small tools in the outside-tool-layer adding 4-slots for inside tools.

Just because you have a preference to one particular brand. Does not mean that their competition is garbage. I own many multi-tools. I love my Leathermans but Gerber has some nice tools. Gerber has a government contract. Leatherman does not. Gerber makes a more affordable one hand deployment design plier. Is the fit and finish on the Gerbers great? No, but they still get the job done at a more reasonable price.

Crazy thing most people do not understand about the Gerber Carbide replacement cutters. If you read the manual that comes with it. It's not marketed to cut ten penny nails or hard wire like it's competitors. They literally tell you that it can cut fish hook sized wire or solid core copper wire. Stranded wire is not something it claims to cut at all. Yet people buy it and ASSUME how to use the carbide cutters in the jaws.

    • @mariusengelsen7194
      @mariusengelsen7194 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yet, it is the best cutter I have used for very fine stranded copper wires. I am an electrician, so I have cut houndred of thousand wires.
But anythin thicker than 2,5mm2 gets problematic.

And it is also made in the (unclear) country where I am from, and I noticed most people have pronounced the name wrong. They are all stupid.
