For me, after 20 plus years experimenting with both brands, it's always Victorinox on the TOP. My Leathermans break and rust, my Swisstools with the same amount of use and abuse, work and look as good as new (literally). The only Leathermans that are decent, and the only that I would suggest, are the older models, (pre removable wirecutters era). The older the better. When it comes to Victorinox, I can't see a difference in quality either it's new or as old as me, they all look and perform the same. If they have a difference in quality, it's too small for the common user to notice, where in Leathermans, the gap is way bigger. Spirit X + Ratchet + Explorer + Knipex Cobra 150, is the best edc tool combo for my needs. Covers so much, in such a little package!
the only things they changed from my 1998 swisstool x to my 2021 one is sturdier pliers with reversed mechanism, better file and slightly better opening of the handles. decent changes, nothing else needed to be changed.
I’ve never owned a leatherman, but I know someone who has had 4, the oldest of which he lost was a good tool, all subsequent leatherman’s be have broken and rusted, pretty much same story as original poster. I’ve had Swiss Army knives since the late 70’s never had a tool break, I did chip the scales once when I dropped it, simple fix to attach new scales, upgraded to plus scales, gained a pen and pin. Knipex cobra xs pliers paired with a Huntsman SAK and the bit driver shown in video is a pretty perfect combination. Swiss and German quality.
Leatherman owners need to at least handle a spirit once in there life the fit and finish standards of the Victorinox multi tools are instantly noticeable over the Leathermans.
I have handled a Spirit and no I would not choose it over the Wave. The Wave is much more practical, much better wire cutters too. The locks are easier to use. That is my opinion.
@@naturecalls3465 practicality and toolset opinions are different for all users. My comment was referring to fit and finish. In my experience leatherman will often one with the locking tools having noticeable play. Also I have purchased brand new Leathermans where the pliers were either just right or ultra tight requiring two hands to open which was annoying when trying to use the tool one handed.
@@mikeespineli1717 I like and and encourage people to check out the spirit..unless they have to have the bit exchanger from dealing with different fasteners. frequently or they just have to have to diamond file..I still have a scar from almost 2 years ago when I got pinched by the wave's handles I won't even touch a wave after that..the surge and spirit x for me..the craftsman is just a bonus for me at least after I started using it once I got mine it was made so well I honestly didn't want to even scratch it so I bought another one and waited until it came in before I used my orginal . so I prefer the spirit for both reasons. my admiration and for its performance not to mention I live in a humid environment another reason to appreciate anything made by victorinox
They’re both shit if you are a tradesman. These are designed for the home handyman I’ve had both and many other iterations over the years and for the cost bleh convenience aside hmmmmmmm…. However if you want to be macgyver great toys.
I prefer the Victorinox Swisstool Spirt XC. It is the one with the partially serrated sheepsfoot blade that has been discontinued. With the addition of the new clip it is in my eyes the best edc for pocket carry. I don't care for the one handed opening blade. I never find myself in a situation where it is absolutely necessary to open the blade one handed. On the contrary, my favorite tool to keep in a drawer or in the car is the Leatherman Surge combined with the bit kit. I do not own any imperial tools as I live in Switzerland. So those that come with the Surge are very handy for the occasional freedom screw.
This is a well done video in my opinion, Ben. I have always enjoyed the perspective of folks who use these tools more seriously than hobbyists such myself. Good job!
I went through a wave, surge and charge tti. I just bought a spirit mx and its perfect, i love it. There are some things i miss from moving over to using the mx as my edc but damn, the fit and finish, the ergonomics, the reliability, its stunning.
I have both the Spirit MXBS, which I use for hiking, and the Swisstool MXBS, which is my daily carry. Watching this video is how I found out the public could buy these! Literally been my dream for years for a Swisstool to have OHO blades! Great video!
1. Since we are talking multitools with pocket clips: the Spirit is more pocket friendly (weight and dimensions). 2. If only Leatherman would add outside accessible scissors and an awl like on the Spirit... we would get a mini-Surge 🙂
Great review. I own original Wave and Swiistool X for the past 15+ years and having my Swisstool on me every day . As an industrial maintenance this Swisstool is just invaluable for me. Wave is nice but more fragile, needlnose tip broke on me on some delicate work I tried to do, so it sits at home 100% of the time since. Victorinox craftsmanship is impeccable.
One thing to mention is the fit and finish. Both my waves have play on all the locking tools, while my victorinox tools have zero play in all their separate tools.
That is very true. The downside to some people might also be that the Victorinox models are not easily modified, the same is not true of the Wave. There are pros and cons to each model. In the end, people just have to weigh those differences against one another to decide what is the best fit for them.
@@txtoolcrib very good point. I’ve ordered some replacement tools off of Etsy and installed them on my wave since it’s my main work tool. Can’t say I’d be able to service my victorinox!
After 10+ years with my Wave Gen 2, I know where my vote goes, but having said that, Victorinox more times than not, comes up with gold. Like you said, it's down to preference.
I carry a SAK and and Wave Plus. I use my SAK for lighter duty chores and the Wave for heavier duty chores. Either could be forced into service to cover the whole gambit, but for me, it’s just better to let them do what they do best.
I have to go with Victorinox in general. I have had the original Swiss Tool for over 17 years and it has not let me down, heavy but tough. - think using it as a hammer multiple times with no damage.. I tried the Leatherman Wave but I am left-handed - that is an issue with the Wave. You will get many blood blisters from the 2 raised thumb openings on the blades when you try to use the pliers left-handed.. Just a watch out for the lefties out there, righties give it a try in your left hand and you will see what i mean. I think Leatherman could have considered 1 out of 10 of the users and made it ambidextrous. I will go with the Clip if it is ever available. Hope this helps someone. My daily is a skeletool, but i dont do the kind of work i used to - Factory Maint.
if you look on ebay you can find thumbstuds designed for the wave to make it easier to open. if you have a 3d printer I believe there are files on thingiverse to make the same thing.
Nice to see an impartial review Ben, so many leatherman owners are unable to consider anything else due to either national pride or brand loyalty regardless of the quality of the tool. They're pretty well matched now but for me the build quality and rust resistance of the spirit is the winner,(and the awl) if it had the diamond file it would be second to none.
Totally agree. I’d also like to add that if Leatherman customers were more honest to themselves, they wouldn’t allow leatherman quality control and manufacturing drop so hard in the last few decades. Unfortunately if it’s not “made in USA”, way too many people won’t even consider it and will lose so much on it.
@@dmam412 apparently you are extremely ignorant and uncultured, otherwise you’d know that first multi tools are Italian from the Roman Empire. Fact check before speaking randomly. Besides this fail, victorinox started multi tool before Tim Leatherman was even born, how can you even say such bullshit with straight face? Leatherman quality is extremely bad (sog/gerber level of quality) since 2003, everyone that isn’t a fanboy will tell you this, if you keep cuddling them they will keep proving your ass with Chinese level quality and you will keep thanking them with a smile. At least tell them to use some lube for the next releases.
@@clintwestwood3539 can you please be specific about what quality control issues you are referring to? Only issue I'm aware of is plier head wear in. Which is covered by the warranty. I bought a new charge plus last year that had the issue, it was repaired and is smooth enough to one hand butterfly open and closed. Other than that the tool was functionally perfect from day one.
@@chrisnelson1935 all the complaints I personally saw from my models or friends/colleagues models: - tip not touching perfectly (leatherman won’t fix it); - blade HT off (breaks); - pliers HT off (breaks, especially on twisting, leatherman fixed but said that you shouldn’t twist with their pliers, which is absurd since you are removing 50% of the work a plier can do); - multiple surge scissors either don’t cut because of weird sharpening angle or they have a space between blades and softer materials can’t be cut because of this; - frame got cracked when closed because of bad quality issue; - pliers, scissor and knife play are not unusual; - bit drivers are hella soft and will break after not much use; That’s just from the tip of my head, I’m out right now so I will add more and ask for my group of friends (we are all multi tool collectors) to add what problems they had, but it’s not unusual to have problems with Leatherman. I get it that they want to cut down cost so quality control isn’t as good and mass produced items will have problems more often than not, but it’s maddening how many problems I found on several tools during all my collecting years. I won’t even touch what I read on forums because it’s not fair since I don’t know the users, but I know my friends and I know how they use their multitools (mostly for collection) and we talk when we find issues. There is a TH-camr (maxlvledc), good lad, that pointed out some of these issues on brand new leathermans he bought (out of the box), so it’s really not that uncommon to find issue with their tools. I hope this helps, have a good evening.
My two favorites are the Surge and the Swisschamp. I get that they’re totally different platforms, but unless something comes along that combines both into one Uber tool, I’ll continue to carry both.
I believe that they are both great tools. I carry both a Leatherman and a Swiss army knife. With the Leatherman I have broken the flat or pry bar on 2 of them. I also don't like the scissors. Everything else is fine including the accessories which I also carry with me in a pouch at all times. It is the Swiss Army knife that I like for the Scissors and knife. The great thing about carrying both apart from having the best of both brands is that I can keep the blade on the army knife razor sharp with the diamond blade on the Leatherman. The one thing hadn't noticed before is that the normal hex head fittings fit in the extension. Great video. Cheers John
As always a good show. I dont own a swisstool but will soon. Mxbs is on my short list. I do really like my wave + but i can just see the fit and finish of victorinox is better . Thanks for all you do and how well you do it.
Actually I kinda like an awl , good for marking , starting wood screws etc . My field expedient awl of choice is the one on my Victorinox Electrician . What I would like to see is a well made folding saw for SDS/ “T” shank Jigsaw blades . I’ve been thinking about scrounging the SDS chuck out of a dead Jigsaw and cluegeing something together .
I like the Awl and the scissors. I just carry a smaller SAK with an awl. It’s light and I don’t notice each until I need it. The Wave pliers, lock blade knives, and the bit driver, the extension enabling most all common bits in addition to the Leatherman bits, etc., makes it a keeper.
Great review, very thoirugh and fair. I own both models and love them both. I don't EDC them, I put them in my overnight travel bags. Great to have when you're away from him at hotels.
Yesterday with my leatherman I've repair fathers electronic watch (microdrive rules). And bit driver makes me able to tighten any bolt on my riffle in a field hex torx etc. I can sharpen the knife of victorinox with leatherman, and victorinox cann`t sharpen knife on leatherman. So yeah))
Great Review. I own the Leatherman Wave Plus & Leatherman Super Tool 300M Military & Victorinox SwissTool Spirit. Hoping to buy Victorinox SwissTool Soldier Spirit MultiTool to use Widely.
Even after ths Arc release im still going back to the Swisstool Spirit X. The Arc pliers bent on twisting, the Spirit has never despite being used longer and harder.. dont even get me started on the wire cutters! Broke those things so easily 😂
I have a 20 yr old letterman and carry it in a pouch with a high intensity flashlight, a small vise grip, a small channel lock and a small lighter. Yes, i am an old boy scout.
Nice review 🙌 I have both tools and I like Spirit more for one more reason you barely mentioned: Victorinox won’t rust. Wave would get covered in rust the next day you’ve used it in the rain or cut anything wet in the outdoors if you won’t protect it with Ballistol or WD40 or something like that. Same for Signal and the entire LM lineup. There are awesome tools and design decisions on a Wave but for the outdoors I’ll get a Vic.
@@in-sympathy-old I was so invested in getting a wave/surge lol now i gotta rethink. i so wish victorinox had plier based multitools with one hand opening blades, etc.
I don't know if I'm just using it wrong but in my personal experience the saw blade on my swiss army knife cuts significantly faster then the one on my wave+. Still love them both though.
A big advantage of the Leatherman is also that you can take them apart. And replace items or make modifications. Or give them a good maintenance job. With the Victorinox it's not possible I think
great way to void the warranty. Leatherman refused to repair my supertool because of scratchmarks around the screw, indicating i tried to manipulate it>
@@CanadianBeachcomberYes you can take it apart. You need a parsing wrench set for those specialty Chicago screws Leatherman uses on their classic tools. Also handy to have the wrenches to tighten the tool as it ages.
I own a couples of waves, nice tools but have cracked the pliers point in 3 of them. Then i got the spirit. I fell that the spirit pliers are more durable instead of the wave. The size of the handle on the spirit makes more pressure. On the wave the pliers are a bit larger and the handle a little shorter comparing with the spirit. Thats my personal opinion. I still using both of them but feel more comfortable with the spirit. Btw nice review.
If you compare the spirit with a classic 91mm sak you will notice that not only scissors but also the blade, saw and file are smaller. Another thing is that the thumb thing on the blade could be an obstacle while cutting
The + screw driver of the Victorinox is zo good even when screw head is destroyed you can use the Victorinox + screwdriver to get it out a lot of the time
Another great informative vid TTC👍I'm a big fan of both companies and tools but for some reason my initial impression is that I don't like the execution of the one handed opening tab on the Victorinox. I do like the one hand opening of my preferred edc multitool which is the Victorinox one handed Trekker. The thumb hole is the way to go imo. However maybe in use, the tab on the Spirit isn't annoying or a problem as I have not used it and am just speculating. I have owned the first gen Wave for many years and it is a solid and useful multitool especially with the bit kit.
5:55 it's a Victorinox vision of Civilian or Matriarch 😀 I'm in love with victorinox serrated blades, they are like jedi lightsabers. So pretty sharp...
I recently bought the Victorinox Swiss tool. I know not covered here. But the file with the way the grooves are made seem to want to pull one way or the other. The leatherman file will stay true. But I may need more practice with the Victorinox. I love my leatherman surge but I have seen it fail in ways that a cheap screw driver wouldn't. That is concerning. Hope it doesn't get worse. Again love the Leatherman and Victorinox.
Aloha Ben, I appreciate your comprehensive analysis on the pros and cons of each tool, as well as your unbiased opinions. Keep up the good work, it is much appreciated by many of us. Your tool box must be overflowing with all the multitools you have, lol!🤣🤣🤣

@@coryulrich6489 bad quality control for me. Leatherman quality is really really really bad after 2000/2003 to nowadays, they dropped to SOG and Gerber level, when before 2000 they were a competitor for Victorinox. Nowadays? Victorinox wins on quality of materials hands down. Also the reason why they never felt the need to grant 25 years of free maintenance, because they can last longer with no problem at all. Leatherman, on other hand, will break down after a decade of not hard use, or way faster if you use it harder. That’s my take from owning Swisstool, Spirit MXBS, SuperTool300, Surge, Charge and Style PS. The SuperTool is from 1995/1998 if I’m not mistaken and it’s the better one ironically. Leatherman REALLY dropped the ball and got their head stuck inside their asses lately.
I had the Wave first because the Spirit initially only had the butterknife as it's knife which was not going to work for me just in case I don't have my regular knife on hand, but when the Spirit X came out with the spearpoint blade, I immediately got it and never looked back or got confused to which plier based multitool I'm carrying from now on. What mattered to me is not what the Spirit did or didn't have but what it didn't do to my barehand. I can use the Spirit barehanded without the fear of pinching, the pliers' pivot point don't stick so much that my hands and fingers get tired of opening it and you can squeeze the handles, again barehanded, really hard without the tool leaving marks on your palm and fingers. I have a separate knife and I can always bring my diamond sharpener that fits in my pocket if I need to, but I don't have a spare right hand to bring with me. It wasn't the steel, it wasn't the implements all being outside or even the shininess of the tool, it was the comfort and ease of use that really made me chose the Spirit X.
Ben, great video and great reviews btw. I'm enjoying your channel. I'm a duffer/layman for using my multitools around the house. So your view as a professional is helpful and clear. Your insight on the pros and cons of both Leatherman and Victorinox is both unique for some insights and echoes what I've heard on other reviews. I really hope Leatherman Garage bares fruit. I currently own a wave plus and just ordered a spirit MX (clip's not available in April). I want to compare the wave + to the Spirit MX myself after your video and I figure the best way is to buy both. I like the mod you made on your surge for the wire cutter. Best. Paul
Heh. I have a 1998 Leatherman SuperTool EDC. The handle is a little ouchy, the tools are all internal, but I haven't managed to break yet. You guys got the fancy stuff though!
I carried the Wave for 6 years and never broke a plier head. In fact, the only one I have ever broke was on a Surge. I was doing something I never should have been doing with it, so it was completely my fault, and Leatherman replaced it, no questions asked.
maybe the most used multitool are leatherman and the less used are victorinox, and that's why breakages are more common on the leatherman, just a thought

noone seems to mention that the victorinox allows you to "latch" the tools at a 45 degrees angle.. so if you can´'t reach something, you have the option to try it like that.. tbh its still not ideal, but as a tool for quick fixes its nice to have i think.. the awl is handy.. can you use the free p4 in an awl like way?
One hand opening realization on Spirit is terrible, I think; left-sided Wenger-style scissors are bad too; it were better to change watch screwdriver on awl on Wave and remove small scissors with the bigger one... I'm on LM side...
I saw someone awhile back who modified their Vic spirit scissors to open wider by grinding down a bit of the nub that contacts the valley in the end of the spring.
@@txtoolcrib I’ve never noticed the scissor as I’m also nearly always carrying Klein Stainless Electrician’s scissors , and/or Leatherman Raptors . I can see a problem with this Swisstool mx and thats when drawing it out of a pocket the one hand opener on the blade catching on the pocket and coming open as its withdrawn? I dont think the Victorinox model is as good as the legendary wave and i dont think its as heavy duty?
I like both manufactures both make great products. I have the wave and the rebar like the pliers more on the rebar. Question are the pliers on the Victorianox more like the rebar or wave?
Ben what are your thoughts on the longevity of the swisstools. They look and sound great, but what about long term endurance? They may have a great warranty, but if you're shipping them off all the time for repairs?!
The thumb tab on the blade of the Vic makes the blade considerably shorter if you are making through cuts. Slicing an apple would make the tab hang up as it passes through the apple. The curved handle of the Vic is a great design in that it prevents you pinching your hand if the pliers slip, something I’ve done a few times on the Wave. I wish the Wave micro driver would fit into the bit extension since it would be less clumsy to use when adjusting eyeglasses. The Leatherman pocket clip comes with a removable lanyard clip which is nice if you are tying off to your belt since you can remove the tool easily if required. Does the Vic have a lanyard hole?
The knife in my TTI feels like a real knife.. this feels like a standard Vic knife. Good for cutting cheese etc but it dulls instantly when it touches wood etc
i have the tti and MXBS, the file on the tti charger is just trash, the diamon coating is barely there after few times of use (less than 3), tried to sharpen a drill bit (3mm), and the cross cut side was never sharp to begin with (got the tool brand new). I love the s30v blade and the length of it, and love the gut hook on the charge+ , but that's about it, the glass screw driver bit is waste of space, the sciossr has lots of plays in it although it is longer and opens wider. the tool is notable heavier and fatter. overall , MXBS is my new daily now, nothing to complain yet, otherthan it came with too much oil on it and all the small tools are tight in there, almost fingernail broke tight to get then out.
My Surge pliers broke. This is absurd. Heavy, big multitool in Poland very expensive. I Got them 4 days ago, first try 3 milimeter thick piece o steel, more force use to bend this. Pliers burst on my hand. 1 piece fly 2 meters in room. Very good quality made in USA.
You must be careful using the flat Philips bit driver on the Leatherman. That reduced contact makes it too easy to strip out screw heads. It's a deal breaker for me as a standalone tool.
Many reviews on YT do mention that usability of other tools became much worse due to the one hand opening bump on the knife . Basically saying that the X is much better then the updated version of the Spirit. Do you exoerience the same issues using it?
I really like the older and larger/bigger blade that had some kind of serrated blade I wonder if you could change blades/tools on the Spirit and Leatherman Wave? Of not, they really should have made a Multitool with chargeable tools.😊
I actually took a bit of wisdom from you and got the wiha double ended bits and they work very well with my extender...keep up the vodeos, you doin' good🤠👍
Hello, Ben - very good overview - a minor point - you might have shown how the accessories with the tools looked stowed away in their respective pouches...I thought you might be considering that when you demonstrated the case the bits were in...I'm figuring you thought not, as you felt the video was getting long, although I personally would not have minded... Good job!
You are precisely right. I had intended to add in the respective sheaths as well, but after seeing how long this video was I elected to leave them out.
Customer service and warranty of Victorinox is miles ahead of Leatherman. Lifetime warranty and free return no question asked. Leatherman's customer service is very bad, they take ages to reply to your emails. Also if you are not satisfied with the tool you have to pay for shipping to ship it back to them. That is no charge on the Vic side no matter what reason. Also from my experience Leatherman's fanbase is more arrogant and not as nice. So for me, Victorinox all the way.
They are but they are also heavy duty. I cut through hard stuff better than my surge with that scissor. I really like the scissors on the spirit. However if you need to use it for everyday use, SAK scissor and Swisstool scissor are both better because wider and longer (more cutting space)
The spirit doesn’t have a ruler because it’s more ergonomic than any leatherman (look at its shape, its no competition there). However the other swisstool (the non spirit one), which is the Surge competition, it has a ruler and its probably the best 20cm ruler on any multi tool for hows designed. So if you need a ruler on it, go for the bigger and heavier version. If you want a pocket friendly one, you go for the spirit one.
@@kennogawa6638 If i need tweezers I will just carry a SAK with me. Any two/three layer SAK is so light and so thin that you won’t even notice it. Especially if you go for the keychain one. And again Victorinox tweezers have another level of quality compared to the style (at least mine PS). I don’t see the argument there, I personally don’t need tweezers on a daily base, but with a Victorinox Manager (or any other keychain one) you will get better tweezers than any Micra or Style. It’s all about quality of construction and material, and in that regard Letharman loses on any front in the last 20 years. Victorinox is in another league if we talk about that.
@@kennogawa6638 also I want to add an observation since we are talking about add-ons: the fact that you can put stuff inside a leatherman tool it’s not a good thing if not intended (like SAK scales), it just means that the fit wasn’t well thought and they didn’t optimised the space they had. It’s a compromise people find to make use of the extra volume they are carrying when it’s not used from the company itself. But if they wanted us to put tweezers inside a full sized leatherman, they’d just put them inside or tell you that there is a space for it (like 91mm SAKs have a pin holder but sometimes no pin, it’s still intended to carry a pin, not something people found out to optimise the bad fit). That’s my thought about it. However, again, if you need tweezers, Rambler Manager and/or Minichamp will do a great (better) job. You also get pens et cetera
This is a very good comparison. I already have the Leatherman wave plus, and used a Leatherman Rebar in the past. But I want to try a victorinox multitool. I know they make quality tools, I have a victorinox swiss champ for more than 20 years, and swiss champ mini. But I was wondering which one to choose from this swiss multitools. But your video helped me. I ordered the mx clip version, because I want the saw blade. And the black version is more expensive, the difference is about 35 USD. Can you tell me if this mx clip version comes with a carrying case?
@@Noble_Isaac Hello, I got the mx clip victorinox multitool and I love it. The design, fit and finish is better on the victorinox. Every tool has its own spring, and is accessible from the outside. leatherman has decreased its quality over the years, they're fit and finish are getting far worse than they were, ans in my country, the 25 years guaranty that was a bonus to carry one of them is no longer active, only for de first buyer of the tool and with the recipt, and tell me if somebody keeps the recipt for 25 years for the warranty.
I received my receipt digitally through email because I ordered it through the webshop. Then I saved it onto my google drive in my "receipts" folder with all the other receipts I have for warranty. If you receive a paper receipt, then you could just scan or photo it and dave a digital version. They would have to accept those too for warranty claims.
Victorinox would not make anything like these , nor would anyone else, if it weren’t for the Leatherman. A Leatherman is also cheaper in price. I have one older Swisstool that I inherited.
Leathermans have more of an Industrial feel. That being said i would choose the Charge Plus over the Wave.
I got the Victorinox Mx clip a month ago and I find I am carrying it more than my wave
Do you find any discomfort with the knife thumb catch?
Thanks for pointing out the superior rust resistance of the Spirits over the Wave.
I'm owner of black Surge last 8 years. I don't know anything about rust...
I decided to do the same. Only instead of the Wave +, I bought a TTi.
Once you own a Victorinox Spirit X, you don’t need any other multi-tool!
Leatherman invented the multi-tool. If it ain’t MUSA it isn’t any good
@@dmam412 apparently you are extremely ignorant and uncultured, otherwise you’d know that first multi tools are Italian from the Roman Empire.
@@chrisnelson1935 all the complaints I personally saw from my models or friends/colleagues models:
- tip not touching perfectly (leatherman won’t fix it);
- blade HT off (breaks);
- pliers HT off (breaks, especially on twisting, leatherman fixed but said that you shouldn’t twist with their pliers, which is absurd since you are removing 50% of the work a plier can do);
- multiple surge scissors either don’t cut because of weird sharpening angle or they have a space between blades and softer materials can’t be cut because of this;
- frame got cracked when closed because of bad quality issue;
- pliers, scissor and knife play are not unusual;
- bit drivers are hella soft and will break after not much use;
That’s just from the tip of my head, I’m out right now so I will add more and ask for my group of friends (we are all multi tool collectors) to add what problems they had, but it’s not unusual to have problems with Leatherman.
I like the idea of that, you have one heavy duty and one precision multitool, good one!
The only tool leatherman wave is missing is an awl. And I’m perfectly fine with it! Never used an awl
If you’re driving screws using the awl to make pilot holes is essential
Always great reviews. Just bought a spirit x plus being delivered today
I'm learning towards the wave+, seem more capable and versatile in my opinion.
I thought for a long time my Leatherman Wave + is the best, until I own Victorinox Spirit X.
I believe the Vic . Ratchet extender , etc ; are made by PBSwiss ( a class act , and make some of the best drivers on the Planet !
Get off the fairy dust chris .... ya nose is caked in it 🤣
Nice review 🙌 I have both tools and I like Spirit more for one more reason you barely mentioned: Victorinox won’t rust.

Still love them both though.
A big advantage of the Leatherman is also that you can take them apart. And replace items or make modifications. Or give them a good maintenance job. With the Victorinox it's not possible I think
Can I take my Supertool 300 apart? I have looked at the screw heads and don’t understand how that is possible.
great way to void the warranty.
I hope you eventually get the NEW SWISS TOOL MXBS OR MX . This way we get a head to head comparison video with the Leatherman surge . Great video .
The + screw driver of the Victorinox is zo good even when screw head is destroyed you can use the Victorinox + screwdriver to get it out a lot of the time
I really like the extended philips head. And I expect that it could double as a Marlin Spike for loosening knots.
Hey Ben.
I been doing a lot of salt water SUP boarding, with the Vic spirit on me. No rust 🤗
5:55 it's a Victorinox vision of Civilian or Matriarch 😀
I'm in love with victorinox serrated blades, they are like jedi lightsabers. So pretty sharp...
I figured out by accident that dipping a Leatherman in a big barrel of chain lube solution breaks it in real quick.
At the end of the day , we are lucky as Chit , to have so many good , readily available choices !

Victorinox is the clear winner here. More tools, higher quality on all fronts, and Victorinox is an honest company unlike Leatherman
You're talking above a lot of heads here. What makes Leatherman dishonest?
Accessibility is the only thing

Breakages on Wave pliers aren’t uncommon . In the case of the Spirit/ Swisstool , breakages are much less common .

One hand opening realization on Spirit is terrible, I think; left-sided Wenger-style scissors are bad too; it were better to change watch screwdriver on awl on Wave and remove small scissors with the bigger one... I'm on LM side...
Thanks for this detailed comparison.
Thanks as always for taking the time to watch.
I saw someone awhile back who modified their Vic spirit scissors to open wider by grinding down a bit of the nub that contacts the valley in the end of the spring.
I’ll have to look for that video. It might be a worthwhile modification.
Done that using a diamond file from a surge. Works great. Can’t understand why Victorinox doesn’t do the nub shorter
Leatherman's scissors can be sharpened and become as good as those on Victorinox. I forced those on PS4 and repaired it by center punch the joint.
Why, when comparing tools with all external tools didnt you use the free p4? It more closely matches in price
I prefer Leatherman than victorinox because of the disassemble factor
It cuts thru apples like butter. No problem there at all
Lost my wave +, did not liked the weight but loved the tools, any recommendations?
Victorinox every time.😉🙂👍🤝
Does the mxbs come with a sheath?
Ok, an anyone tell me what the hook On the Swisstool awe is for? Can’t seem to find info on this anywhere.
I really like the older and larger/bigger blade that had some kind of serrated blade
I wonder if you could change blades/tools on the Spirit and Leatherman Wave? Of not, they really should have made a Multitool with chargeable tools.😊
Can you attach the clip to the Victorinox MXBS?
Yes
I actually took a bit of wisdom from you and got the wiha double ended bits and they work very well with my extender...keep up the vodeos, you doin' good🤠👍
Replacing the scissors with a reamer punch on a Wave+ wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit, lol.
"doesn't make the best of bottle cap lifters" So it's not just me that can't open a beer bottles my first attempt at it with the Leatherman.
All the multitools from Victorinox are impeccable. Leatherman tends to be luck based what quality you get (3/5 did not meet my standards)
Best of the best.....👍👍👍
The scissors in the victorinox multitools seem way smaller than the scissors on their knives
They are.
They are but they are also heavy duty. I cut through hard stuff better than my surge with that scissor. I really like the scissors on the spirit.
However if you need to use it for everyday use, SAK scissor and Swisstool scissor are both better because wider and longer (more cutting space)
I notice the Victorinox doesn't have a ruler. Also you can carry tweezers in the Wave due to a gap in the butt end. The Style tweezers fit perfectly.
Are you saying it doesn't measure up? 😉
@@clintwestwood3539 But can you pocket carry it with tweezers.
Tell me which one you like better when you got the vic
@@Noble_Isaac Hello, I got the mx clip victorinox multitool and I love it. The design, fit and finish is better on the victorinox. Every tool has its own spring, and is accessible from the outside. When you opening and closing tools the feedback is excellent. The only thing that I don't like is the scissors limited opening. But I already adjusted that with a Dremel, and now everything is fine. But is hard to decide which one is better. The Wave plus is a very good multitool with a very good serrated blade, diamond file, bit exchanger. It is my favorite on the jobsite. The Victorinox is my outdoor tool.
Just received my MXBS. The knife is really mediocre compared to my Charge TTI. Not so sure the Vic will replace my LM as EDC. I will give it try a bit longer.
Can you link to those double-sided bits you use with the Leatherman extension? Great comparison video!

I like Leatherman skeletool CX 154CM, but it rust allot and I'm not close the sea. It has 145grams and 3 tings what it has workes. So if Victorinox Spirit MX clip has 205grams and all of that tool and its not rusty,I'm buying it. I hawe Victorinox form 1970 from my grandpa and its beutuful not spot of rust. And my friend boot Leatherman Skeletool it had rust litle on players to me that is to much I had knifes from 420HC but no one has ben so corrosive like Leatherman. Cos of that Im going to sell mine and go with Victorinox
🙂👍
Victorinox sak and multitool knives in general looks and feels disgusting. Greasy and soft looking is not my type of look but I still edc pioneer x 😅
Wave: an awl over scissors? Nope, IMO.
Leatherman. Needs to step up their game this year. Imho leatherman is failing in innovation
We’ll see what they have in store with the new Leatherman Garage. I actually have high hopes for what might be coming down the line.
@@txtoolcrib what’s sad is that latest “Leatherman Garages” look more like collection tools rather than actual heavy duty tools. But that’s just me.
leatherman has decreased its quality over the years, they're fit and finish are getting far worse than they were, ans in my country, the 25 years guaranty that was a bonus to carry one of them is no longer active, only for de first buyer of the tool and with the recipt, and tell me if somebody keeps the recipt for 25 years for the warranty.
Rip Leatherman.
Leatherman is FAR superior to Victorinox
leatherman PINCHED , others don't.. no contest.
So Vic is better?
Victorinox would not make anything like these , nor would anyone else, if it weren’t for the Leatherman. A Leatherman is also cheaper in price. I have one older Swisstool that I inherited. I’ll stick to my Leathermans. The Swisstool is mostly a pretty paper weight. The tools are hard to access compared to any Leatherman I’ve ever used.
