  • There are tons of multitool options out there, but often the choice comes down to the two biggest names in the game. It's the Victorinox SwissTool Spirit X (which you can find here: bit.ly/31WkVeR) vs. the long-proven Leatherman Wave (available here: bit.ly/2BT1Pfd)
Which multi-tool titan would you rather have on your belt?

I own a lot of both tools and they both are great, but the engineering behind the swiss tool is second to none!!! Every bit of space is occupied with the biggest or longest driver possible and most tools has two features to it and every tool on it works great for what it was designed to be used for!! I like my leatherman but i love my swisstool!!!

I like the swiss tool, but I personally use the Leatherman super tool. The tools on the swiss tool are hard for me to get out, and they are hard to clean because of the tight gaps. On top of that I prefer Leathermans drivers and knife. The swiss tool does feel like a lot higher quality though.

I own vixtorinox spirit. I can tell you than it is a master piece of design. The designer created an unbeateble multitool. Every thing in this multitool is exceptional design. One side is focused on wood tasks the other side in Iron tasks. All of it accesible from the outside and the pliers are extremely comfortable...
Belive me, it's a piece of art.

I have the WAVE and the non-x Swisstool and find that the Swisstool is the one I find myself carrying/using more often than anything else. I considered the X, but the loss of the ruler and the funky ergonomics of the screwdrivers made me opt for the flat handles.
One highly underrated aspect of the normal Swisstool is that both the flathead and phillips screwdrivers are configured to be centered when the handle is fully closed making it a LOT more pleasant for tightening fasteners. If you've ever been in a foreign country and under a rental car's smashed fender with nothing but a multitool and a handful of self tapping screws, you will absolutely appreciate a screwdriver with a centered head.

I've been carrying the Swisstool Spirit X in black oxide daily for years now and absolutely love it. I have had a Leatherman for decades. I currently am carrying the wave plus in a leather pouch on my belt. There is a standard wave, a surge, a micro, a rebar, and a couple of Skeletools with my other everyday leave in drawer knives. I do have a couple of Gerber Diesels but they do not get carried. I think these are close to 20 years old. I picked them up out of curiosity. They are OK. I have never had a victorinox in my hands. I have been so pleased with the Leathermen that I have that I have seen no reason to invest in another high-dollar multitool.

Out of the two, thee Wave suits my personal needs better. While the Spirit is a true work of art of a tool, I live in a colder area (temperatures routinely get to -35 degrees Celsius in winter) and I use the knives often. I like to be able to access my knives while wearing gloves (one-handed with lighter gloves and two-handed with heavier ones). To each their own though!

Wave has the bit driver, which lets me have about 45 different screwdrivers on my belt it also has one-handed blade opening and it featured a easier-to-maintain design with the screws instead of rivets. It also has replaceable wire cutters made from 154CM, which is a major plus. I use mine a lot and it hasn’t needed replacement cutters yet, but I know that I don’t have to worry about using it because it has that feature.

I am just considering between Charge+ and Spirit. Charge+ is great choice because of the steel grade of the blade for eaxmple. You also get the set of accessories.
For me Spirit is the winner, because of the preciseness. One salesman said: "You cannot peel an apple with the blade of Leatherman..." I do get his point.
I suggest for your speech to use high pass filter (low cut) until 70Hz or more to avoid popping in mic.

  • @JoshSchlottman

I have both but carry and use the SwissTool all the time. It's slimmer, sleeker, and lighter than the Wave. Fits easier in my pocket and hardly notice it's there. Like how the small tools are accessible from the outside, they open smoother/easier and you don't have multiple tools coming out when pulling out one. Great tool selection you get more bang for the buck too. The chisel is used often on my SwissTool but I am a little jealous of the Waves bit holder.

  • @Adamant4160
    @Adamant4160 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Gotta say, the swisstool is a bit less beefy, and has less overall functions, but is just a pleasure to use. Every single tool on it works great. And very smooth and comfortable, both in the hand and the pocket. If I really used the pliers on multitools a lot and depended on them then the leatherman would win out. But, I am a tradesman and have plenty of tools. A multitool is really something to always have on me so when I encounter something unexpected I have a tool to deal with it on me rather than going to my toolbags or garage.

I own both. Here is my mostly objective assessment:
Pros for both brands: The plier heads are fantastic, for both gripping and cutting. Great saws and files on both.
Wave pros: One handed knife operation is smooth and super helpful. And the knife shape and quality is top notch. The changeable screwdriver bit works great, but I wish it were a little longer.
Swiss Tool pros: Victorinox makes the best scissors, period. It's a design that's been around for decades, and Victorinox is smart to not fix what isn’t broken. The Phillips head is one of the best of any multi-tool; almost as good as using a dedicated P2 screwdriver. The bottle opener is also best in class.
Wave Cons: Because of the design of the one handed operation, the pliers can sometimes dig into my fingers. (probably due to the way I use pliers?) As with most Leathermans, the scissors are clunky and feeble. The combination can/bottle opener is meh at best.
Swiss Cons: Heavy and slippery; reminds me a little bit of trying to use an iPhone without a case. A gazillion flat-heads, why? Only ONE Phillips head.
Overall, I lean toward Victorinox. It's a more refined design, and I just find their tools to be more useful. But I'm always happy to find my Wave laying around, when there's something that needs fixing. I'm keeping both!

my first multitool was a sak as a boy, loved it. later i got the charge tti as my first multitool with real pliers, that was very nice too, but sold it to get a swisstool (the bigger one).
This was made quite perfect, everything snaps in place, polished etc. but it was way too heavy for every day carry, so i had it on my desk for years. Now i bought a used wave and im loving it, i am not worried to get it scratched up because it allready feels more like a tool than a fashion piece like the swisstool.
its more compact, lighter and i like the one hand opening even though i am a lefty and cant use it as such and here in germany they are kind of outlawed, but whatever:P

  • @tomxaak
    @tomxaak 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I used to have leatherman wave charge tti with extra bits - until it got stolen. Now I'm in a market to get it replaced and thinking between the same vs Victorinox Spirit XC plus ratchet. I loved the one-hand opening of the blades on my leatherman plus the fact it's S30V. But always preferred the scissors on the Victorinox knives. In addition the Victorinox can be purchased with a separate ratchet - that's, in my opinion, a MUCH better solution than having the bits on the multi-tool directly. Not only because of reach, etc.. but also because you can use both tools at the same time (e.g. ratchet + pliers). With that being said, this time I think I'll go with the Victorinox.

Have carried the Charge tti since they came out and carry extra bits in the little pocket behind the tool. The gerbers sit in the toolbox and the Charge goes everywhere I go everyday. Very good video, you covered the important facts of each tool.
I owned one of the original Waves and purchased a newer version a year or so ago. I prefer the original. The multiple bit idea looks good on paper but unless you are going to lug them all around with you the real value is minimal.
These are multipurpose belt carry tools, if you can’t solve your problem with core blades you should go get your tool box with full size purpose built tools.
I have owned a Spirit X for several years. Having all the other tools accessible without opening the pliers is a huge plus to me. I also find accessing, deploying the tools, and operating the locking mechanism much more user friendly on the Spirit X.
Build quality in both Leatherman and Victorinox is superb.
My preference is by far the Victorinox Spirit X.
I am anxious to know your selection and why.

I would never give up my Charge Titanium for the Victorinox, though it is very well made. Someone said the Victorinox’s screwdriver was better than the Leatherman’s Charge, I don’t think so. The Charge’s bits are changeable and multipurposed. Also, if you break the Victorinox driver, you’re without until you can get it replaced. The Leatherman’s micro screwdriver has been a Godsend numerous times as well. Nonetheless, there is no question about Victorinox’s quality and craftsmanship nor Leatherman’s.

It's in the place of the saw actually and the saw went to replace that serrated blade. The quality of those scissors is bad however, i still think i should do some sharpening or even reshaping grind for it to cut better. The awl is from Leatherman Rebar and fits in with minimal work. • @michaelkaliski7651

I have both and the Victorinox wins hands down in terms of comfort in use. The Leatherman Wave is less refined but the advantage of having two cutting blades cannot be overstated. I frequently end up carrying both on my belt at the same time. If I had to choose only one, it would be the Victorinox purely for the comfort and quality of finish.

I got the leatherman wave awhile ago and was very disappointed in its performance after only a short time the screws started coming loose, both the saw and the knife broke when put to some moderate use. I know I am hard on knives, but I’ve owned a regular Swiss Army knife since I was 9 years old and never had a blade break. Even the Gerber multitools Ive owned stood up to more abuse and outlasted the leatherman.

I have never owned a MultiTool but I went to check out both types at the knife store. I ended up choosing the wave + instead of the Victorinox because it seemed easier to access the tools and to unlock the blades. Also, it seemed a bit more industrial than the highly polished Victorinox. Time will tell if it is durable or not. Probably the deciding factor for me would be the the ability to add a pocket clip. I don’t wear a belt. I did buy a Swiss Army knife though so I guess I will see what their products are like. I also bought a Leatherman K4 because it seemed awesome.

The original Leatherman Wave but if Leatherman ever got rid of the eyeglass driver and swapped the puny scissors of the "+" for their previously great scissors, I would switch. I like the size and function along with the bit driver addition that I could use their bit kits with. I make my own leather pancake holster for my Wave and that completes my EDC.

  • @BibleStudent4U

I got the Swiss tool Spirit X because I think that the tool set is more balanced than the Wave. The Wave tends to focus too much on the four main blades which makes the rest of the tools look like afterthoughts. Also I do not need a serrated blade and rarely use the plain blade because I carry a dedicated folder. Every tool on the Spirit X functions perfectly except for the scissors which do not open wide enough to be useful. However the scissors on the Wave are also tiny. Someday I plan to buy the Wave plus but for now I will stick with my Spirit X

Both are great quality multi-tools but I prefer the Wave over the Spirit only because of the easy access to the blades even with sweaty hands or when using gloves. The Spirit is a fingernail eater and some time you need another tool to help deploy the blades and rest of small tools. The Leatherman Wave can also be modified by removing the screws while the Spirit is sealed with rivets pivots.

For me , I prefer the leatherman wave. It's got two great blades that are quickly accessible. Most times that I de-sheath my leatherman is because I need to use a blade.
The Victorinox is a respectable tool; but the blade seems a bit lacking in mho.

I'm a Leatherman guy. Never owned any other brand. I'm very pleased with Leatherman so I never tried any other brand.
However, here is something you should know about the Leatherman wave: If you are trying to turn a bolt with the Leatherman Wave and the pliers slip off, the inner edges of handles will close on you and pinch your palm, just under your index finger. And when I say 'pinch', I mean they will cut open your skin. And that is why I switched to Leatherman SuperTool 300 and Rebar.

Bad Office joke aside, I still have and use my original 1988 Leatherman PST which only recently finally had one of the tools fail (cracked), and to be fair, I was abusing it at the time. Had I not used the file to try to pry an item open, it would still look nearly new. I can’t speak about the newer Leatherman tools, but Victorinox is no slouch either. Tough call. Probably would come down to price. Excellent overview on both!
