Degan: “what does piggy back mean?” 😂
That’s unfortunate but at least now you know what you’re dealing with.

That was Tyson! The summer help! But yes. At least we know it’s a complete out of frame rebuild. Now the work begins! Thanks for watching Troy!

Single rod bearing failures is know for this engine. It is a pain since you have a Brakesaver engine. But it is best to replace rod bearings every year. You would have parts warranty from Cat if a bearing fails. On the third year replace rod and main bearings. Cat does not offer a 0.010 bearing, only 0.025 or 0.050 for the rods. Your lubrication system is contaminated and the oil cooler is expensive for a Brakesaver engine. Your Brakesaver is also contaminated and you have to have special seal installer along with a holding tool and fabricated tool. These hold the Brakesaver stator in place to prevent damage to the seals and piston rings. When you order parts, SIS has not been updated to the latest parts. Gasket kits are usually updated over piece parts. I would replace the bearings in the front gear train and the bolts that hold the gears, stub shaft and front plate replace them. Again SIS does not show the latest design. Replace the lifter clips and Cat has a new tool to install the lifters. Also I would rebuild the VTU, again depends on which 3406B you have SIS may not show the latest changes. Replace all bolts in the VTU, I have seen them break or come out. The carrier in the VTU can slip and cause the advance to run retarded. Again depends on which B model you have, 7FB's and very early 4MG's cannot be fixed on the slipping. Starting at 4MG03600 they fixed the slipping problem. Good Luck

Thanks for your input John! We are just beginning with this project so we are still working out all the details. Luckily we have rebuilt more or these engines that we can count so having the right tools and knowledge for the job is not a problem. Just trying to decide what direction to take this ole girl! Sure appreciate you watching and giving feedback! Swing by the shop anytime if your ever near by!

@@yourdieselspecialists I am sure you got this, as with anything, A good tech is not afraid to ask a question. What is your full engine serial number?
