As a Cat diesel fitter i used to get called in to a mine to do a top tune on any 793 that had a overspeed event. The contractor had installed a indicator liight that showed a overspeed and it was taken out of operations until it was inspected and then the supervisor had the key to reset it, the operator got a boot up the arse but it was all about minimizing failures.3500 eui engines had a run also of cam failures back in the early 2000s and i changed out hundreds of cams but 3400 engines were not bad apart from throwing legs out of bed when they felt like it ! LOL
We had 773B Trucks serial # 63ws PC engines and latter DI engines lifter roller issue a few times and the lifter retainers break resulting in lifter turning in bore wiping the cam lobe out early engines also would break the crankshaft in the haul trucks 992c and 992ds used the 3412 actually we had good service from the engines with most of the problems were crack cylinder heads around the precut threads due to overheat not a issue our DI 3400 family of engines
Slightly used Cat 3412. All parts, pieces, clips and metal filings included. Passes Commyfornia emissions, doesn’t run! Will help load! Good video, would like to watch the tear down and rebuild.
Thanks for videoing this. Had a couple of buildings and total of three 3516’s for standby AC power use. Seemed dependable, low hour use. Only considerable negative: Each drank an average minimum of 34 gallons of fuel per hour.
Most likely you mean a 3516. Unless it was really big then could be a 3616, but not at that fuel consumption rate I suppose. As far as I ever knew theres no such thing as a 3416, biggest is the 3412.
I have seen in the comments that it was a "Overspeed" that caused the failure. Isn't there any Rev limiter or governor on these engines? Or is it like when you miss a gear shifting and it revs? As you can tell I'm not a Diesel mechanic.
If you’re going down a decline in too high a gear you will get a overspeed, also not getting early on the retarder will also not help slow down before ground speed gets too high. Most overspeeds are down to operator error.
Just stumbled upon your channel I work with and move big gear also and it’s raining in Massachusetts so I’ll check out a few more videos because your content is down to earth and very informative hope you have better luck with your gear than you are with this motor keep them coming big guy
I'd love to have a job like that but you almost need to be a mad scientist to understand how all that stuff works together. I'm such a mechanical genius many of my projects finish with me outsmarting the engineer because I always end up with extra parts.
Over speed maybe through I have seen failed lifter rollers in 3408 and 12s Di and earlier PC engines as far engine how many hours on it, if low hours cut and inspect oil filters drop the pan replace the cam & lifters and oil cooler used a turning tool (pinion) not a bar to rotate engine, also while down inspect the main and rod bearings at least the ones closer to the pump. Vic
How many hours did the engine you removed have on it? Just a little curious. Smart move pulling and switching it out, Especially with it being a rental unit.
Will you flush out the oil cooler as well, or replace it with a new unit? Good thing you decided to tear the original engine down before installing the replacement, otherwise ypu would have carried the oil contamination over...
@@ducewags I don't understand ? They sell some parts too so If they have a demand for it they will make money selling the engine, getting back the core, rebuilt it again et put it back on the shelf for another time. I didn't want to say putting it again in one of his truck.
Having worked for a CAT Dealership and a veteran of many "3400" series rebuilds, I'm going to venture to guess that the valve lash wasn't kept within spec.. Just my opinion...
Malice in the lifter palace ( with the forbidden glitter )
@@Look_What_You_Did Probably much longer than they will ever admit.
Nice reference to "I Do Cars" for this engine teardown.

Fun to watch someone else do the dirty work. love the big motors you play with.

U do such interesting things with those big kitties cats. I do enjoy your video's. It's fun to see how good U treet the people working with U.

I would like to have a couple pistons and the cam shaft great for making lights out of
If you really need some go to your Local cat dealer and chat with the Component guy he will give you all you want.

@@1waukesha Yes, 3516’s.
You can figure on a gallon per hour per 20 HP consumed.. You calculate the HP required and that will give an accurate fuel consumption, +/- 5%....
Company I work for here in Alaska has a fleet of 773B and a few D models. One 773 is a water truck and I pray that air compressor never fails!
I don’t know how you would change it without pulling the tank or engine
I have seen in the comments that it was a "Overspeed" that caused the failure. Isn't there any Rev limiter or governor on these engines? Or is it like when you miss a gear shifting and it revs? As you can tell I'm not a Diesel mechanic.
I think they modified the governor.

How did you get a brass roller to stick to a magnet?
There is a metal pin in it

its all about experience. the more years you have under your belt the easer it gets. spare bolts are not a good thing
extra parts is worse than extra bolts...
Good call replacing the motor. Forbidden glitter with chunks.
A costly gamble either way.
Agreed. Fix it while you have it apart.
Thanks quinten
Thanks for watching!
Can those lifter bores be bored out and sleeved??
I believe so but don’t quote me on that

YES, I subed.. Anybody Casey likes is good with me.. Especially since I used to work on big iron.. Engine Specialist..
When are you doing your dads mopar
drove past the crescent valley exit and wondered what was out there........now I know you are LOL
You should stop by some time
I did the same thing on a west coast run

Do you Oil sample?
that oil looks awfully thin. how are you picking up brass with a magnet?🤔
There are steel parts in the brass, all mushed together
Cool video, thanks for sharing.
Cutting torch allows the cam to be pulled BTDT.

Dang! Thanks for the video
What can you repurpose this cam for if anything?
It can be a KIA or a Hyundai
Hey up mate are piston's and rods the same as in 3408
It's a 3400 series... Yes...
Colt cams in Washington and bc Canada. Might be able to fix that right up
@@Look_What_You_Didwhat do you mean
You didn't have to return the core to CAT ? You choose to keep it in your inventory ?
We have 2 of these trucks, better to build and keep on the shelf
I Hope you have some demand for it. Very expensive piece to have on the shelf ;)
@@Mmercier942 That must be a joke, right?

You engine oil looked pretty damn thin for 50 degrees. Need to see if your having fuel dilution 18:59
Watch the 2 previous videos beforehand 👍
First time seeing any of your videos. Would’ve been easier just to say why it was so thin. So I’ll pass. Thank you
Big engines, big failures!

Having worked for a CAT Dealership and a veteran of many "3400" series rebuilds, I'm going to venture to guess that the valve lash wasn't kept within spec.. Just my opinion...
Probably a part of the cause for sure, i believe it was oversped and bent a pushtube
@@quintonbartolotta Any markings from the valves on top of the pistons?? That for sure would say overspeeding..
I would make an educated guess and say the lifter is seized in the bore because it was joined by metallic debris.
Its good your gonna rebuild it, great video thumbs up
You need to do something about the wind
I tried yelling at it. Didn’t work..
The main question is: Why did the lifter(s) fail ?
bad batch? over-rev, lack of oil,...
Clean the block, grind the cam, new lifters and off you go, that is a real american rebuild
What an odd man, I was waiting for snow white to turn up with 6 more friends 🤣
Hell yea, you know the guys are real when they pull the pan just so they can see the carnage. Good shit
Looks just like most of the Ram 5.7 engines after 50,000 miles
Looks like you might start doing oil Analysis and question the oil that you are using . That didn’t even look Like oil in the pan .
This was an overspeed failure nothing to do with the oil used
Remember that in the initial video they found that there was diesel in the oil.
Failure analysis I’ll bet the prelude on this engine was bypassed.
That is oil related failure
Oil looks diluted injector failure
cut the filters apart and see what "beauty" awaits....
Must be junk if an over speed causes it to eat cam and lifters.. and then you find a neglected one that just goes forever..😂😂
I say Cov after I fart 😎
Hey Quinton !! As you know ,,, CAT'S DON"T like high revs & There's the proof of it !!! 🤔🙄🤥 What a waste !!! 😡😡🤬

Dude you clearly don’t work on engines! I wouldn’t be posting this until you known what your doing
