It's nice how Dune: Imperium is getting some love on this channel: First with Paula and her solo playthrough of it, and Monique and Naveen showing off the 2-player version of it. Maybe it should have been #1 on an "On the Radar" video 3 months ago with a clear sweep from everyone.
Hopefully, the public can get their copies soon, and we can see another expansion for the game announced in the next year or too. It's be nice if Dune's 2nd expansion comes out during Christmas 2022, since the base game might have started a theme for the release dates of its products.
It's certainly one I've been enjoying quite a bit lately!
I found it slightly amusing that Naveen referred to Foldspace as Folded Space, which is a company that makes foam inserts for board games 😆
The mentats exist because of the need for some way to do complex calculations without using AI because AI was banned in the Butlerian Jihad.
This expansion is turning my opinion of that game for the better. I've always preferred Lost Ruins of Arnak over this due to better deck-building mechanics, but the expansion really turns things around. I love the technology tiles, I think they are much better use for spice than the agent spots in the original game. Unfortunately, I am not so keen on dreadnoughts, as they seem overpowered, and I feel there should be a way for them to be taken out of play permanently (for instance, when losing to another army containing a dreadnought). Still, a considerable improvement, and a very enjoyable playthrough from Monique and Naveen, as always :)
Finally, a quick Dune lore explanation :) A long time before the story in the "Dune" novel, humanity fought a war for survival against thinking machines and won - the so-called Butlerian Jihad. After the war, any technology that copies the human mind was banned. It meant throwing out even common computers. This is where mentats came in, as they are people trained to replace a computer's capabilities, both in terms of data storage and computational capacity. It is a thing often missed about the Dune universe, as despite the use of all that medieval weaponry, it is actually a highly technological setting. They have things like electricity, artificial gravity, faster-than-light travel and laser weapons, though the latter are not used that often due to a funny effect that happens when a laser hits a force shield :)
Ahhhhhh thank you so much for that explanation, Zhivko! It all makes sense now. Monique has really been intrigued by the story of Dune so it's nice to learn more about the lore.
I always felt that Arnaks deckbuilding was less important to winning since it’s so much shorter. Dune Imperium is longer but it gives you more of an opportunity to build synergistic decks. Dune > Arnak for me!

Arnak Deckbuilding is by far less present and important as here. Wouldn’t even call it Deckbuilding…
29:31 The House Hagal card says Harvest description says "If no spaces have bonus spice, reveal another card."
Missing it isn't a big deal, but following the rule does help with spice accumulation.

Naveen actually won because of the error earlier on, which caused Monique to score a point. Great battle!
I havent watch till the end yet, but she isn't guarantee to lose because of the miscount. She would hold on the Allied Armada and win another skirmish anyway. She could have take a combat win from Naveen later on.
Even if she did win that combat by miscounting, using that card is a misplay. She only spend 1 troop and Naveen didn't even commit. Essentially decrease her secret combat strength by 7 while Naveen didn't sacrifice any troop.
God i cant wait until i get my copy of this . Got my wife into the hobby with dune so this is a must buy

At 1:21:57 rival should have deployed his two units in.and again at 1:29:10
At 1:38:00, you can only deploy 2 units, not 3. Enjoyed the playthrough.
AHH yes, great catches!! Definitely an oversight on our parts to forget to carry through with deploying the units. Also, yes Naveen should have only moved up to 2 units not a 3rd.

9:50 That Missionaria Protective card IS actually Bene Gesserit but was misprinted in the earlier editions. Newer prints have this corrected and it should be played as tho it has the BG tag.

However, sorry for being nitpicky, but I don't agree with comment at 1:07:45 and not revealing card for the AI - it could matter, i.e. whiffing Heighliner in such situation is great feeling! Or it brings Heighliner or other powerful card one step closer to the top!

Missionaria Protectiva was misprinted and should have been a Bene Gesserit card. Reprinted versions of the card were included with the deluxe upgrade components.

This is a great expansion to this game, and I feel probably it’s the only way to play it now. I really like how the Rival deck works in order to make the game viable at two players. It scales really well throughout the game, it’s power level is well balanced with the players and for the most part it enhances the stakes for the combat.
They use this in a similar way for solo play which I thought was very cool too. Thanks for checking this out with us! -Rodney
My favorite duo, back at it on Dune! Have you all played the uprising stand-alone expansion yet? I saw the other video where you played with all "current expansions" at that time, i believe before uprising came out.
Once again, you all rock! Well done! And congrats Monique! Even though the early game error wasn't intentional and missed by both players, once something is done, its done! So no, i disagree with others saying "Naveen actually won". All's fair in love and war...and Dune! Amiright?! 😂

FYI ... ALL CARDS you put down "in play" which includes both the agent action cards AND revealed cards is used to determine Fremon Bond. You need to have 2 or more Freman Tags on any of these cards that are "in play". 🙂
aka. the card itself with the fremen bond and another card, yes? as a minimum.

@@yhaerysthethird6088 Yup, when you reveal those cards also count as played, you just didn't use an agent action for the top reward or placement.
Such a great blend of deck building and worker placement. Plus even more critical player interaction with the conflicts.
But the best part of any Dune Imperium game is the tightness in the final scoring. And WOW!! That was an epic finish. Great comeback starting in the 8th round. Thought that was Naveen's game until then.
I've got to break down and try the solo game, had the expansion for 2 months and haven't been able to get the family to play. Anybody out there want to play?

36:52 you say you wont be getting the freemen bond reveal bonus becouse you played the card in an agent turn. That is not true. Fremen bond always trigger, if atleast one other fremen card is out.
Also i the AI only go harvest spice if there is extra spice to harvest. If none is preasent you draw a new one. It is explained on the card :)

All that harvest spice for the bot and you didn’t deploy any troops for them 😅 it probably happened before as well not sure of the timestamp, this could have definitely affected the following turns. Does the rival not get the mentat when they win it? This could have changed things too. But really surprised that Naveen didn’t go for 2nd place on the last but one turn which would have given him the solari needed to win in the end.

Mentats are human computers essentially... basically training, the right genetics and the Juice of Saphu (I think it's called) which allows a Mentat to do hyper-calculations of levels that regular human beings cannot even approach, and some mentats even surpases what the AIs of old were capable of.

Noticed at 56:40 the rival won the combat, but the dreadnought didn’t go to control a space, making the next combat harder for you guys.

at 1:30 does the AI player not get another agent turn after Naveen playing the Mentat, unsure if it would have made a difference but you never know
I think maybe that timestamp is incorrect :) The rules say: "After the First Player (the player with the First Player marker) takes an *Agent* turn, House Hagal acts, as long as it has an Agent remaining in its supply." Which suggests that it doesn't get one after a Mentat turn (the rule book even puts the word Agent in bold, like I've done here). That's my interpretation.

Hi Kobus we avoid giving personalized recommendations here (what I might like, you might not), that said, this video shows a full 2 player game, so hopefully it can give you an excellent sense of how it plays, and whether or not it would suit your particular tastes. - Rodney
I am not burdened with the same journalistic integrity standards as Monique & Naveen, so I can say that this game is fantastic with two players (and a NPC rival).
Three human players is, in my opinion, the most fun experience, but it's a lot of fun solo, as a duo, or with a full table of four.
Your mileage may vary, but if you like the playthrough, I suggest you check it out. Maybe a friend has a copy, or you could check at your local game store.
Great video! I enjoyed it thoroughly. Thanks! :-) But @1:16:08 isn't the timing wrong? Card should be played and resolved first before any Agent placing, so you have to decide whether or not to spend 2 spice for the card bonus effect before you get to see the Intrigue card. Otherwise, the Intrigue card itself can influence your tactical choice to get the bonus or not. 🙂

You can decide if you want the card effect or the agent effect to resolve first!
Rules page 9: 'When you play a card and send an Agent to a board space, you gain the effects of the board space as well as the effects contained in the Agent box of the card. If the board space belongs to one of the Factions, you also move your cube one space up on its Influence track. You may carry out all these effects in any order.'
Can I use any of the rivals for solo? The instructions said some something about rhombur and (1) other house only... Just a little confused. Thanks
Hi James, we didn't cover the rules for the solo game in detail, so can't easily help with that.
Dire Wolf app allows you to choose any two houses as NPC opponents in solo game, so apparently it is possible.
Not every rival works with solo rules, but 6 of the base games ones do, along with 2 from this expansion. So 8 total. :)
At 1:29:55 she said she didn’t wanna purchase want cards to make her deck bigger but she could a purchased the one that allows her to trash a card.. I wasn’t sure if she saw that or purposefully didn’t take it? Also do you “have” to trash something with those cards or is it optional?
I'd have to go back and check my rules video to be sure, but I believe trashing is one of the few "optional" symbols.
Trashing is optional, unless it is a cost, that you have to pay or the cards says, that you have to trash it.

Curious on why you guys were not having the AI score points?
In a 2 player game, the AI doesn't score points. They just get in the way.
@@SaniFakhouri That's what I thought my first time playing with AI, but it actually does score points. It even collects resources, which are turned in at a certain level to score more points. It makes things much more interesting.
@@PRC533 it only does that in the solo game. on the 2p it just blocks. you can play with it scoring points in 2p and it does work but its not the standard way to play.

@@WatchItPlayed I remember why I was confused, I liked the solo AI so much that when we play 2 player we have the AI still score points like in Solo (have been doing it so long now I actually forgot it was not part of the rules)
