Update: Add 1% to the final score I blame my ability to totally mess up simple addition! Who doesn’t love a good comeback story? Let me know if this one ticks your boxes. Seeeeeya! Mark
Definitely pays off to listen to the community and take the feedback on board. This is more of a Lazarus Edition than an afterlife one. Well done to White Rabbit and to Mark for an epic review. You are not helping my finances with great reviews bro, I tell you.
Had no idea this game existed and had done so poorly initially. Definitely has caught my attention now! I also think in this day and age of devs releasing not entirely finished games (for one reason or another) its important to support developers who spend the time to improve their game post launch to a more polished standard.
I am going to buy the physical release of DEATH’S GAMBIT: AFTERLIFE DEFINITIVE EDITION! I like physical copies of games that are mostly bug-free and complete.
This developer actually took all the critiques and reviews, went back to redo whole game, and came back all better, this point alone is worth our support. I might getting this game at full price😂
It’s such a rare thing to see a review channel acknowledge the post launch updates and I’ve found many games to play through these second look videos you do :)
I’m so incredibly impressed being that I’m one of the vets that played the original game! They have COMPLETELY changed this game. From top to bottom. Such an upgrade man.. I’m enamored with this Afterlife expansion!
Just started playing this and really loving it... I love how the footage at the Start of the review is because you went left at the start of the game, secret ending lol
Easily my game of the year (well, maybe tied with Astalon). The base game was good, but had some janky issues. Afterlife fixes many of them and adds more Metroidvania elements, and it is now an absolutely massive game! If you like true Souls-likes, this is the best since Salt and Sanctuary
@@SwitchUpYt Yes absolutely, so happy the devs didn't give up on it. Also, is there any chance you will ever go back to review Astalon? I understand if it's too late now but it's amazing!
Like you said, the game was decent to begin with. Now it looks like they've made it into a great game. I decided to pre-order it on Switch too, because the developers deserve it. It's too big of an update to be free, especially when I was perfectly content with my original purchase on PS4. I'll probably finally play it in a month or two when I get through my backlog...
This came at the perfect time. I've been searching for a new game, and Death's Gambit has been on my list. Sold! Thanks again for another great in-depth review!
The game looks great, I’m finishing one of the Castlevania’s now, and it seems to have the same vibe. I would like to point out that the Switch Up score is wrong. It’s 93. Hahaha. I always count them. See yah
still can't believe the reputation this game got on it's release... from my experience, after getting used to the tempo or flow of combat (which i enjoyed because that was my exact experience with souls something this game wears on it's sleeve as inspiration.) it's one of the most beautifully and well thought out worlds that has always had a great story running the background with interesting mechanics with plenty of depth in character creation but admittedly didn't have the biggest range of equipment. it always had a map, with vague markers.. it always had well designed boss fights and great exploration... this was no, no man sky... it was a chase of a younger sibling being crushed under the weight of it's older siblings achievements and the unrealistic standards they set. people should take into account how games are made before they judge them so harshly.. the majority of this game was made by a single guy.. obviously he's had other's come on but he base game.. was a solo project.. and it was judged like it was a AA title with a publisher backing it when it just wasn't.... it's closer to salt and sanctuary in class, then it is to the games it was originally compared to. it was amazing then, it's even better now. i just wish it was given a little more of a chance to shine, i feel it was unfairly judged because other games that released at the time that were obvious incredible, but did have a much bigger budget or dev team or both. things like hades, dead cells and hollow knight set unrealistic standards and people failed understand the combat was deliberately weighted and required for thought and planning to execute, just like it was intentionally vague on directions to force exploration.. (again.. just like souls.) this game has many mechanical and design differences to the souls series but conceptually it is by far the closest thing we have seen to a 2-d spiritual successor to the original dark souls. well, i'm at least happy about it getting another chance at a first impression, hopefully it get's the recognition it deserves this time.
Bought, thank you for the recommendation. Your guys' reviews are always just so comprehensive, making it so much easier to pull the trigger on a new game.
I held off getting the game at its initial release because of the mixed reactions it got. And i'm glad i did because now i get to experience everything for the first time with this amazing overhaul. Hats off to the developers for going the extra mile.
I’ve been looking for another switch title in this genre and had my eye on this release. Thanks for the detailed review! Also love the negative point in the overall score at the end, lol
Have you played the “ori” games. Ori and the blind forest and “will of the wisps”. I’ve been cranking through metroidvanias lately and I really loved blind forest, it might be my favorite one I’ve played.
@@mattmatter5643 I played “Ori and the Blind Forest” last year and I’ve been wanting to pick “Will of Wisps” up but have yet to do so! I’ve heard it’s just as good if not better?
I hear it’s better, which says a lot because I was really impressed with blind forest. I bought both, but I haven’t fired up will of the wisps. I’m saving it to play on Christmas lol. Have you played “ghost song”? Thats another game in the same genre that just came out, It’s very metroidish.
I'm very excited for this one! Love seeing them work hard to turn around a game that released in a terrible state. Definitely want to support the job well done at addressing all the issue it had.
Just came across this from another one of your review on soldiers for the switch I immediately bought both of them. I am having a blast with both these games thanks for the wonderful review of both these games. I hope to see more like these games to come to the switch. Thanks so much
I bought this on PS4 a year or so ago when this update was first announced. I was really excited for it as it was announced as a free update to the game. Glad to hear it’s a much better experience. Just have to wait a little longer to enjoy it myself.
Serenity Forge is offering a physical copy of the game for pre order along with some extras. This review is making me look forward to the hard copy release to drop soon, always appreciate the reviews!
I found the best spot to harvest essence and just creamed the darkness knight at level 90. There are these two baddies with purple force fields right before you fight the Gsian Giant and they give you 150 essence each! They are very close to the save point right before the Boss so you can farm them for 300 essence every 30 seconds back and forth. You can use Crow's Feathers to make it faster or take a chance that willpower doesn't make the game harder and use the suicide knife for free. Enjoy!!
Recently got this on my Switch Lite. I have spent some time on it. Gotten both endings A and B. Beaten every single boss, but not the heroic versions. Well, a few of them, but not all. Maybe one day. Even beat the super secret hidden one, which lemme tell ya, takes quite a bit of effort and time to unlock. Would never have found it without a guide. Takes you to some pretty bizarre, trippy areas too! But I digress...I really enjoyed Death's Gambit Ashes Of Vados. Fun metroidvania design with soulslike sensibilities. It's a healthy mix of adventure, humor, horror, and drama. The locations are varied, unique and memorable. Lots of secrets to find. Plenty of variety with weapons, magic, items and armor. There's also some genuinely amazing stuff, especially towards the end that I won't spoil. Pretty much everything anyone could ask for from a souslike Metroidvania!
Considering your comment on the small fond, it's comforting to know that I'm not the only one struggling a bit with it when playing, for example, Hades in handheld mode. Not that I wish ophthalmic problems on anyone but at one month shy of 30, I found this particular sign of aging occurring a bit too soon.
Just finished this game today and I have to say, I loved it. The story, the combat, the map design, the music are all very well done. Never played the original release so I can't compare it but this version is definitely worth the price of admission.
Being a Demon/Dark Souls/Bloodborne lover, I was quickly into buying this game. To be honest, for me it is a GREAT Metrodivanian game for the Switch!!! I just LOVED IT!

I absolutely loved this game when it first came out and played and beat it on the ps4. I am pumped to be picking this up for the switch. Great review!!
This release is the Zodiac Age of Metroidvanias. Passable at launch but the developers retweeked most of combat and classes to almost be another game. I love it so much when the creators take the complaints to heart and work to make the game better.
Please tell me the reference with "totally redeem themselves" is to Chris Farley in Tommy Boy...I need this to be true🤣 Otherwise, thanks for the great review!
Thanks for doing a video on this game. I got it on PC as a Humble . Bundle monthly game. I'll try it out again, and if I like it, I'll probably re-buy it on Switch. (Just like I did with Going Under, Ori and the Blind Forest, and Slay the Spire.)

Common man what kind of review is this if you don't thuroughly check out what the moisture setting does! Inquiring minds want to know ;P
I'm just finishing Hollow Knight, and really want to find a follow up. Dead Cells is one of my favorite games, so I'm now torn between Blasphemous, Ori And The Will of the wisps, and now Deaths Gambit. I'm... Im rely torn now 😅
You cant go wrong with any of those 3 games...But honestly I enjoyed Death Gambit the most out of the 3. The story in Blasphemous was really weird & ori was more of a platformer than metroidvania..
@@peterc504 I plan to pick up DG. Ori was beautiful, emotional and had great music. Blasphemous was atmospheric and right up my street in terms of visceral brutality mixed with ecclesiastic overtones. It was definitely less intuitive though... more like old-school 'Vania stiffness. I'm struggling with Hollow Knight (about 10hrs in). I love it then get bored/frustrated with it quite easily.
@@Trenchfood I was the same way with hollow knight! The first time I played it I quit much like death gambit. But then I started to get the hang of things & played it til the end and really enjoyed it. Some of those bosses are insanely hard it almost felt like playing cuphead again lol I plan to replay death gambit today actually I got it on pc back in 2019 so Im really curious how theyre going to add to the original ending.
@@peterc504 Let us know. Death's Gambit is £6 on PS4 right now. If you're saying it's great before Afterlife, that's a no-brainer for me to pick it up!
The artwork in this one is really good. I love the idle animations and color scheme a lot. I might look into this one. I also appreciate the work put into this afterwards. A lot of developers just give up and run with the money they made. Edit:... I'm also very curious as to what exactly the "moisture" setting does... lol

Which one would you recommend the most between this, Blasphemous and Ender Lilies?
Wow… difficult question dude. Just get both and be happy.
@@matuscara4733 You mean all three! 😆
@@matuscara4733 I get it!! 😆
I'm just finishing Hollow Knight, and really want to find a follow up. Dead Cells is one of my favorite games, so I'm now torn between Blasphemous, Ori And The Will of the wisps, and now Deaths Gambit. I'm... Im rely torn now 😅
Can't go wrong really!
Ooh this looks nice though some of that menu text is tiny ffs 😆 (struggled to see it on my tv)
The artwork in this one is really good. I love the idle animations and color scheme a lot. I might look into this one.
I also appreciate the work put into this afterwards. A lot of developers just give up and run with the money they made.
Edit:... I'm also very curious as to what exactly the "moisture" setting does... lol
This looks amazing, exactly the kind of game I enjoy. Love the artwork.
I’m getting it, since I have the original on PS4. With the improvements it’ll surely be an enjoyable experience.
Wow. This is the first I’ve heard of this game and now it’s a must buy for me in physical form!
The fonts are so small, i stopped playing the game on handheld mode...
