Never played the original but will be getting this. Not only because it looks awesome, but also as a nod to a dev team who clearly cares about their product and players.
The game is AWESOME. I hate comparing games, but is a Mashup of Dead Cells, Hollow Knight, Dead Souls, and Ori. It takes the best aspects of all of those and throws them in. Really, really recommend it.
This buy was probably the best one I did in the last 6 months. I bought it around 10 days ago, played the fuck out of it and finished it in 3-4 days, absolutely loved it and I was like "Huh I guess NG+ time, might be a bit easy but it's ok we'll try stuff" and the next day the expansion drops and suddenly I have double the amount of content/mechanics. Already 55 hours in and I love this game, about to finish the expansion too and go on an NG+. This shit is DS in 2D and I love it
@@gremlinking5640 no it is a bad game. Every single mechanic was buggy and we have to wait 3 years+ for them to actually release the game. The only thing that was good about the game before this DLC was the voice acting. The rest is horrible
The amount of quality, in-depth content you make is insane when one considers how many additional hours you need to spend actually playing the game. I don't understand how you can balance it.
Yeah literally this guy is insane, like all the games ranging from all types.. he knew what he is talking about, and whats more insane is he is an expert of the game mechanics.. like wtf it took me hours n hours to realise that while he already produce many high quality reviews
Didn't know this game existed, definitely buying this when I wake up tomorrow. I just can't get enough of metroidvanias and souls style games. I will never get tired of them
I played this at launch of PS4. really enjoyed it, never beat it though because I kept experimenting this the different builds. This game is really underrated. It's pretty impressive how different classes can really shake up your play style. Hopefully this is released on the 4 eventually and I can dive back in, finish up lol
This is not just an expansion. Is a brand new game, i remember playing back when it was released in 2018 and i liked but it got boring real quick. Now this game looks more like a metroidvania and is so much fun to play and fight the bosses.
Awesome! I didn’t realize it came out today. It looks great, the only thing I wish is that they made armour pieces actually show up on your character and not just the cape that changes. Other than that I’m excited to play this after I’m done with tails of iron.
@@AxxmorbidfloristxxC eh… the combat is good but the constant going back to the same area over and over for 1 item got really annoying really fast. Would’ve been nice to have more forward progress instead of having to complete a bunch of side quests before being able to move on
Good on them! I enjoyed the base game well enough at about a 7.5 but it had issues. Always nice to see devs give a shit and improve player gripes with a fan supportive business model. No Mans Sky and Final Fantasy 14 are the best examples ive ever seen but this deserves support regardless. Great video also
The pixel art in the original was phenomenal, I might have to pick this up I really liked the game and these quality of life changes are really nice (FINALLY THEY INCLUDE A MAP!!)
Our review scores weight the game against all other games. This is a good fun game, but it’s not the best game ever. This score is a lot higher than the average 6.7 every other outlet gave it, because we think it’s good. Your perception is simply suffering from score inflation
@@Fextralife it's alright, i understand. To each his own like i said. By the way, you didn't really need to respond in kind to the other guy. Take it easy, remain professional and keep up the good work. Thanks for the review.
I completely disagree. A 6.7 isn't "good." It's fair if anything. This remake/update deserves way more than that. Honestly your response to that guy and this review are super unprofessional.
Played the original and really didn't like it, was bored and saw it on my library along with the Afterlife tagline which I didn't remember. Right off the bat I noticed differences and was wondering what it was. So far I've been actually enjoying it, combat feels better
This, quite simply put, is why indies are amazing. Any AAA developer would have left the game as is, released paid dlc to implement the improvements, or waited 5 more years to do a re-release. Take games like Anthem and Destiny for example. The games were unfinished husks of a game of release, Anthem got abandoned by the devs after a few small attempts to patch in fixes, and destiny got paid dlc that actively blocked out players who didn't pay in for it. Devs who are passionate about their games go to indie studios.
I am 1 year late here. I bought Death's Gambit around when it came out and never finished it. Earlier this year I saw the update and decided to jump back in. Super glad I did the game was amazing.
Very impressive rework by the devs. I will say that I still think a Metroidvania needs to focus more on verticality opposed to horizontally sprawling worlds. The horizontally expanding games have to spend extra attention on fast travel points to cut back on the insane backtracking through multiple biomes. I do think what is on offer here is done well but it's something to be mindful of for sequels.
I remember playing the original version a few years back. Never got to finish it due to life and other games that came out. Now I see this video and that it's on sale right now. Definitely going to give this version a try now.
I've been seeing people giving the story section of this game lower points than its other aspects but I think the story has more to it if people understood what it actually is. Spoilers ahead : . . . . . . . . . . . . . Humanity lost the war miserably. Millenniums have passed and everything's archived; including events, memories and human conscious. They are stored in a museum called Garde Tum and even that failed to function at some point. Crow (Death) can be seen mentioning two times in this game that he's lost contact with Sorun. One when Sorun is stuck in Thalamus's first nightmare before unlocking dream shift and 2nd time in Chamber of Migration (Act A, choosing good ending). But in the Chamber of migration, Crow actually says that it has been thousands of years that he last contacted Sorun (and that he lost the count). From that point, the game actually refers the player as Observer instead of Sorun multiple times and it can be seen even after the credit scene. I believe something happened to the world when Endless beat Sorun in front of the gate (Ione & Vrael can be seen lying dead as well) which we do not see it but I think Sorun never reached the gate but Ione and Vrael only. Final thought, Sorun lost, humanity lost, their history's been abandoned so as their archived conscious/memory. Some anomaly or rogue program green lit an ultimate farewell to everyone before it permanently shuts off because of power shortage and I believe it's Origa. She's the only boss who does not kill Sorun and the only time where "Immortal defeated" does not appear after defeating her. She gives Sorun an access key which is known as "Forbidden key" to Garde Tum which just directly proves that Origa is kinda of a Firewall, allowing Sorun an absolution. Act A indicates this as well. In a cutscene, it was shown to us that Origa's parents left her alone for her conscious to be uploaded and used as a weapon instead. I think this whole game's actually a "Fool's gold". Everything's happening in a saved server with no free will. This just makes Thalamus the only good guy actually cause he puts you aside from the never-ending gambit loop with beloved memories. He knows ending is not an actual end but a futile attempt. He actually lets you keep the only human thing left in you just like his name suggests.
Great review and commentary. You've nailed it. Fished it, and starting again with another class. Its worth higher than a 7.9 score IMO. There aren't many games like DG Afterlife. It's unique and really well made. 8.5 - 9.0 score for me, the newgame+ is confusing. I wish it was more clear why I even want to play NG+. Also, I want the option to skip more story cinemas. There are a few near the end that kill the forward progression.
Got this on ps4 when it first came out and it was okay but seemed out of place. Got the switch release as soon as it dropped and I'm not disappointed. Glad I added this to my metroidvania collection on my switch. Great video fextra
Just revisited it after like a year and god damn I don't know why I ever put it down. I remember being fairly impressed with it when I first played it but guess it just got lost to the backlog. Really glad I decided to jump back into it
i have to say, out of all the 2-d souls likes that came out a few years ago. this and salt and sanctuary are easily the best. looking forward to playing through again with the updates.

It's one of those games which was good yet annoyingly flawed in some aspects, the improvements and additions should finally make it shine, Im certainly giving it another try.
i am gonna be honest, i was keeping an eye out for this game since it was announced and finally in 2018 i got it....and it was not that great, i mean it even made me steer clear of 2d souls like for a while, until i finally got my balls together and purchased a game that i hoped will change my mind, and it did and until today i think it is one of the best in the genre.........BLASPHEMOUS, so go get that one and it has a free amazing expansion also, i myself will check the expansion for this but i am not holding my breath.
Played the original quite a bit. It wasn't perfect, far from it - but it was quite enjoyable nevertheless. Finished the main story a couple of times but i never got around to beating the bosses on Heroic mode. Felt like you need to go there on NG+ with way higher stats and i generally dislike going through the game again with the same character. Now, fighting MORE bosses, that's what I'm talking about!
man how were all these features not presnt in the original, i mean like no map, tht's not even considered a metroidvania imo. it just wouldn't have felt like a full game then, right?
I have beaten five bosses now in this game since the afterlife update. And I'm stuck. I literally have no clue where to go. I need three things to open up a door. But for some reason all of the things that I need to get are locked behind other walls that I have no way to open.
@@andreinishihara I very much appreciate you dude. It was right after the fight with Origa. I'm almost afraid to put more spoiler stuff on here. But, I did figure it out now. There was something that I completely thought was optional or to be saved for later game. But it was not. It was mandatory to proceed

@@glow4417 amazing imma hit this up as i always put off playing this game for some reason and this is a great excuse to stop putting it off.
This game is amazing, review was misleading
How long is the game?
I can,t find this on ps4 is this for switch only? Because the expansion is available on the ps store.
Coming soon :)
man how were all these features not presnt in the original, i mean like no map, tht's not even considered a metroidvania imo. it just wouldn't have felt like a full game then, right?
I have beaten five bosses now in this game since the afterlife update. And I'm stuck. I literally have no clue where to go. I need three things to open up a door. But for some reason all of the things that I need to get are locked behind other walls that I have no way to open.
Look it up
@@bongoshalongo6478 yes I'm trying. Haven't found answers so far

@@andreinishihara I very much appreciate you dude. It was right after the fight with Origa. I'm almost afraid to put more spoiler stuff on here. But, I did figure it out now. There was something that I completely thought was optional or to be saved for later game. But it was not. It was mandatory to proceed
