I Designed the Most Famous Tongue In History
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 1 ส.ค. 2024
- The Rolling Stones’ ‘hot lips’ logo is everywhere. You’ll find it on t-shirts, bumper stickers, key-rings, backpacks and murals across the globe - it’s even a popular choice of tattoo.
Over five decades after its big debut on The Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers album, these red lips are still one of the most recognized symbols of rock and roll. But who is responsible for creating the legendary icon?
This story takes us back to 1970, when an art student called John Pasche received a very important phone call. A call that would lead to the design of the most famous tongue in history…

Where have you spotted the Rolling Stones lips and tongue logo? Do you own clothing or an item with the logo on it? Tell us in the comments! 😝🤟👇
I saw it on a Lego set. Pretty cool.
It's going to be on the new Barcelona Jersey.
@@timtamTom.2 That is epic!! 🤟
I saw it at the Lego Store in Leicter Square😀
I remember an episode of 90210, wherein Steve was getting flack for sporting the logo from an alcoholic.
It's hard to believe that a humble elderly man you walked past on a sidewalk was the designer behind one of the most iconic symbols of rebellion for the legendary band whom you love.
People get older over the course of time... I know. It's not an easy reality to accept for anyone, is it?
well mick is 80 so i bet this guy is younger
What a humble and cool guy! He lives such a lowkey lifestyle for someone who created one of the most instantly recognizable logos of all time. Very inspiring!
I've never seen it till recently
@@TROUPEAUROUGE Probably because you're below 18 years of age.
His house may look somewhat modest. But with that amount of backyard. 0:08, and also this property at 0:13. Owning that much land in England, proportionally, is like owning the state of Rhode Island, here in the USA.
I don’t recognise it at all 😂
@@joaocorreiamedia I'm 25
While I've personally never been the biggest Stones fan (just rather before my time, obviously an important band), I do like that they reached out to an art school for a designer. Normally a big band would go straight to the biggest names they could get for artwork, but that they were willing to take a gamble on someone not even out of school is pretty cool.
they also got Delia Smith to bake a cake once for an album, she wasn't famous at the time just a lady
Members of the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and other British Invasion musicians, went to the same art school. That's where they came out as heroin addicts and acid heads. I'm wondering with this artist.
@@johnwattdotca Not the same one 😂
@@skateboarding118 What do you mean, "not the same one". I've seen different applications.
@@johnwattdotca many went to art school yes, but not the same one.
It's an unbelievably lovely phenomena how one individual can create something positive and watch it literally change the world and influence millions. We all have this power within us and we should strive to nurture it and spread it around ❤
" lovely phenomena how one individual can create something positive and watch it literally change the world and influence millions."
What rubbish. Is there anything truly GOOD that you value? John 3:16
It's up there with other iconic positive symbols like the 🙂 and the ☮️ symbols!
Absolutely! That’s the power of great art making ❤
Been thinking about that. I will be one of those people, to make the next icon.
Interesting the way Jagger was involved in the logo design. Nice man here.
Really cool story. I wish we could've seen other versions, the sketches and all! It's always super interesting to see those. But I wonder if he's kept any of it.
Who knew Mother Kali was an inspiration for The Rolling Stones album cover! Amazing!
ah, i see your point...
Now we need the Beatles logo designer
✍️👀
he's dead
Yeah unfortunately Ivor Arbitor died way back in 2005
someone should have put a spoiler warning
VW
I know the feeling. In high school I made a design which combined our school's mascot characterized as a Super Mario character. I called him Super Sammy because our mascot was Uncle Sam. The design was for a small business project the whole class was doing for Econ class. My design won and the hoodies we sold ran out. We had to do a second run. Although I still regret how the supply team didn't do a quality check on the sweaters so the design looked like a knock off but the sweaters did sell. That was my only regret. 10 years later I'm taking the bus and someone is wearing the same sweater and the design was still in tact. I would've thought it would wash out with it being screen printed so badly but there it was. I wanted so badly to tell the guy wearing that sweater, "I designed that."
You may be owed royalties!?
See this is why I love this channel. I never would have known this about such an iconic logo
You, Sir, are as much of a legend as the the Rolling Stones themselves! Iconic!
Truly iconic! 🤟❤️
It’s just a drawing 😂 don’t be so dramatic
Some member of the GBS staff now has a large framed copy of one of the most impactful images in modern history, hand-painted and signed by the very artist who started it all.
thank you for the amazing content guys, keep it up, and keep telling us new and inspiring stories!
☺️❤️
Something I've seen probably a million times in my life and now I know the story behind it and who designed it, I love this stuff.
The Nike swoosh was designed by an art student for $35.
That’s right , it was a young blackie student
I see the logo everywhere and worn by all types of people. I think it's gone beyond the Rolling Stones and represents an attitude that many people can relate to.
Great to hear the story of its creation from the guy himself! For years I thought Warhol had designed the logo, it really is a perfect piece of graphic design. The tour poster is also an amazing artwork… I’m wondering if he did some of their other tour posters from that era and that shared a similar style.
He is a legend! So humble and down to earth
How ICONIC! Making part of history! I hope he's getting residuals from the design.
Such an iconic logo. The simplicity and layering are perfectly executed. 🔥👏😌
Y'all have some of the most interesting stories that I didn't know that I wanted to hear about.
When I was a kid in the 70's there was a house around the corner who had this painted on their garage door. Full size, on a yellow background. It got a lot of attention.
Such an interesting story! Thank you so much for covering it, guys! :)
Glad you enjoyed it! ☺️🙌
I freaking love this channel I love these little cool stories they always have! Never go away again
such a cool story from such a gentle soul..love it
Having a personal letter from Mick Jagger is priceless.
My man this is amazing you guys did great showing who made it and i loved it ❤️ well done great big story!!!
A great story! Very enjoyable.
Wonderful man and story, watched a thing on him awhile ago, just amazing.
So cool! I didn't know the story before. I saw The Rolling Stones in 1999, i believe it was, at Soldiers Field in Chicago!!!
Such a lovely story, thank you!! 👍❤️
Thank you for watching! ☺️
2:58 this is actually very wholesome imo
Awesome video! Watched it three times. You should revisit John and go deeper: the rejected first sketches, and his life's work. Did he stay in graphic design, or choose a different profession after his schooling and the Stones logo?
Regardless, great video!
I am glad you all are back!!!! 😊
I bought a plaster cast & mirror of the image. Tongue in. Tijuana City in Mexico in 1983. Thanks! John Pasche 👋
Glad ya'll are back!
Love the clip with the wife being like "yeah yeah yeah whatever" 😂 she's so over it lol
Cool story!!
3:12 that's lovely haha!
Verry Cool Story!!! Cheers 👍
What a cool and fun story!!
This man is as much a part of Stones legacy as Charlie and Brian
A wonderful story!
...such a nice man with a nice place. Love it! 😊😊😊
Truly amazing!
Love GBS!
Would love the story of Pink Floyds DSOTM prism!
✍️👀
Is it just me or did I think the logo at first was the Dairy Queen lips from that one ad. Respect for that guy I hope he has a good rest of his life, I honestly aspire to be like someone like him one day.
Great job
Wow I didn't know the Rolling Stones logo was inspired from Goddess Kali 🤘🏾
How incredible is that!
So cool thanks friend 😎
Fabulous!
Thank you John!
What everyone wants to know is: How much money did he make drawings the design. And did he share in any of the royalties?
sounds like there were no royalties just payment in my opinion. that was back then nowadays it may be different.
A shame he was only paid a fee for doing it and not get a percentage or share in future royalties. That's the way things were unfortunately.
What a fun story!
How awesome!!
LEGEND.
A good fried of mine is the one who came up with the Gatorade logo "G with lightning bolt." He showed me the sketches of versions they rejected. They paid him for the work and sent him a year supply of Gatorade...
Cool fella! Great story, thanks for sharing!
That’s so cool!!!
Great art is immortal.
Woow! Awesome!!! 👏👏👏
Super cool video
I hope he still gets royalties for being the creator of the design
Top job GBS.......got the tongues wagging with that one........😋
Greetings from Barranquilla Colombia.
A lot of people who wear Stones' Tongue dont know about their music, same can be said about other bandshirts like Nirvana, Def Leppard, ACDC etc.
I'll never forget how i discovered that beautiful logo.
On the Monkey's vest in The Hangover 2
A friend of mine had a white van. He painted the logo on the back door of the van. The van was quite recognizable.
LOVE THE STONES, LOVE THIS🎉❤😊
Great story
I was half expecting Janice Soprano's "stamp" to be shown in the previews. Thank god you guys didnt include it lol
He Really Did Great Job At Designed Most Famous Tounge!
what a legend!
Sticking my tongue is how I am diagnosed with autism. If I think I don't do it nowadays, I'm still autistic. Autism is an unconquerable psychological disorder. No marathons for it. But the joints. The month to commemorate it. And the holiday.🎗
THEY ARE MFING BACK YESSS
literally wearing it rn😭😭😭 my fav tshirt… and i dont even listen to the rolling stones !!! Just a great design!!! 👍
Send us a picture via dm on Instagram, we’d love to share some pictures from our audiences wearing clothing with the Rolling Stones tongue and lips logo! ☺️
Iconic logo.
Incredible
Yes have a baseball cap of the stones 50th anniversary w/ the tongue on the front on the side 50 pick that up at the Pond Anaheim ! Plus a 1989 tour shirt in the front 9 multi color tongues in the front , back all the tour city stops , I saw them in the La Coliseum ! Both original merchandise !
This dude is legend
A very British story!
Brilliant.
I hope he made a bundle off of it...
he literally made history
This had me smiling the whole vid😂
Interesting to see the designer behind the logo! But I would have liked to know what his career was after that as a graphic designer.
beautiful
I hope he gets royalty from his art. Everyone knows the stones mouth and tongue logo. Fabulous
Please do a feature Roger Dean and his album covers.
Thank you
I own several TShirts with the iconic Rolling Stones tongue logo. 👅 Thank you, dear sir. ❤
I thought Warhol created the tongue logo. Cool to know it was another artist.
I'm on my second t-shirt with the logo. I got the first one around 1980. I got the second one a few years ago. I also had the Voodoo Lounge spiky toung shirt
A designer from Los Angeles named Ernie Cefalu also says he designed it, when he worked for a graphic design firm. The design firm took credit for it, and of course other employees there regularly say it was theirs.
well it would not be hard to get the truth. someone is lying.
Yes
The Rolling Stones tongue has been my first jeans patch - but I didn’t buy it- as my family would not give me permission to wear it at the time, I drew and cut out a smaller version of it on a piece of shiny fabric, and stitched it on my Sunday jeans trousers, next to a pocket, so that I could hide it with my hand whenever I wanted.
I was feeling rebellious and funny at the same time, I was 14 and that was my “coming of age act”.
I'm certainly not a Rolling Stones fan, even if I'm a professional musician... and... a professional graphic artist.
You truly can say this man designed the most famous lips in history, I know I've seen them more than any other.
This is really nice, seeing his artistic process. And it would be more than nice if he says how much he gets paid.
He got paid £50 for the logo.
1:38 wow Maa Kaali inspired the design
