This amazes me to no end. My high school which I attended more than 5 years ago banned the use of chalk boards in the classrooms that still had them because apparently chalk dust can be irritating to some people. My university only has white boards and screen projectors. I didn't even know chalk was still cherished in some parts of the academic world. It makes me wonder just how amazing this chalk must feel to write with. It sounds like the equivalent to a smooth art tablet but physically drawing on it.
You can see the quality of it in the video. The one guy says "It's the densest" which translates to a more opaque line, and yet he also says "It erases the cleanest" meaning it doesn't have the disadvantage of smearing all over the place, at least not as badly as others might. The formula for the chalk is probably a higher ratio of gypsum to binder, and the binder is probably not the standard type used in chalk.
Honestly, if you have decent chalk, it's very nice, kinda like working with harder pastels, but then you got ones that are so hard it's like a rock
In russian schools and the countries surrounding it, we still use chalk boards. Obviously we dont use any japanese angel years chalks lmao

I’m very happy that my college in the US is an older one and many rooms still have chalk boards, in addition to projection screens etc etc. This video made me want to find an empty classroom with a board to do my math hw on 😂 I know that some of the science professors here fight to get chalk boards included in new rooms as well
I’m no mathematician, but seeing that chalk and recalling all my school memories of a chalk board, that chalk and those lines are definitely NIOOOCE compared to the general ones you see
Seriously, its weird how you can tell its good stuff just from how it looks in the video.
The way how you push the chalk through the board makes you more remember the formula. Why? Because you can't write fast with chalk and need to remember longer what you gonna write next.
Think it as memory training to your brain. Same method when people do a fast reading but they can't capture every detail which is important to math formula.

When I was in university, I came across a peculiar room. It was somewhere in the old building, they still use a particular brand of chalks there and after my instructor asked me to solve a problem with the green board, I was amazed. No chalk dust flying around while writing, no white strains on the fingers and thumb, smooth, little pressure high precision trace. It felt like, I was painting the canvas with a brush. I realised that day, while other classes have projectors and whiteboards why this class stuck to the conventional ways!
There's something to be said for having the perfect tool for a job you love.
Truly there is nothing like having the perfect tool for the job. Underrated comment btw. Similar situation for me but with pens. Now I’m not a a pen collector, but I am picky about how my pens write.

I'm imagining a scene where some shady looking guy comes into class 5 minutes before it ends, slowly shuffling into the peripheral vision of his client. The students all look in amazement as their teacher walks over, starts yelling at him about being early and palms him a $20. My favorite was the discussion on film traits themselves, same iso, just slight difference in the green dye.
I teach at a university in the UK and we still have some chalk boards, mostly because the maths and physics faculties screamed so loud when the university was replacing everything with whiteboards. Got to say, even with crappy chalk, they're so much nicer to use than whiteboards. You have more control, your writing implement doesn't run out on you without warning, and no idiot ruins the board by using a flip chart marker by mistake...

Japanese stationary in general is amazing. It might not even be made with high quality materials sometimes but the product is always well made. I study in my free time and i like to write with a mechanical pencil and coloured inks to coordinate. All my pens, pencils and paper are japanese. The paper feels so nice to write on.

I have heard about this chalk, and I had a shop teacher that used to use it while teaching machining techniques. I am an engineering student now and I always try to listen out for something similar to this chalk in the engineering world. I have yet to here of any cult followings such as this, but there are some ones the are close. Favorite calculators, favorite brand of pens, pencils, or white board markers. Here in Canada maybe the closest is the fascination with the iron rings, but I don't even know if that would be comparable. Has anyone else heard anything from the engineering world?
It's interesting that Watanabe decided to sell the whole company to a foreigner. I guess he recognized that only a true fan would faithfully and passionately recreate his chalks, regardless of nationality.

It's not a case of yellow fever, the chalk does actually write better than most other brands. It's not a massive difference, but i can imagine that when you're using it for several hours each day it starts to matter

My junior high maths teacher also cared about his chalks a lot. He didn't use the chalks provided by the school board, instead he brought his own chalks and instruct a student to keep them safe for him. I was that student that year. He would come to me whenever he needed chalks and take one or two. I had a little box dedicated to the chalks. 😂😂
Its crazy how easy it is to notice when you're using this chalk vs traditional chalk. It just feels really nice using.

Funny story: I'm an astrophysics student. Last year when I transferred to a major research facility, my first professor, who is also a top particle physicist, spent 10 minutes going over the beauty of this very same chalk. And he did talk about the hoarding.

I am doing a major in math and I’ve had the opportunity to use one of these chalks and what you just said is exactly how it feels. It feels like a writing on a white board with a marker but while still having the distinct chalk feel. It’s hard to explain, you just feel like a God when you use them.
