    Truth about the cows staying outside. I used to make it so the cows could come in the barn, but they would just stand outside in the freezing rain,ice or snow. Only time they would hang out in the barn was when the weather wound get warm in the spring so they could bring the flies in the barn.

    Thanks for the video sure like it just follow you around and visit. You’re so correct on animals in the frigid cold. We had -37 to -32 for 3 days and 4 nights with a NW wind
    at 35-40mph. I raise all beef cows and they have a choice of a shed, barn or wind break outside. Almost all decided to stay outside behind wind break so I buried them in oat straw and hay to eat and lay in. Been doing it this way well over 60 years and it’s always the same. God created animals to with stand so much more than us humans understand. Stay warm and safe my friend.

    You are 100% correct on your animal rant. Animals were created to be in their natural environment and they grow a winter coat for a reason. Case in point, the bison in Yellowstone live without an man made shelter at all and it gets -20* and stays there for weeks. To be honest, the animal cruelty comes in when ding-dongs get large dogs and keep them in apartments or subdivisions with small yards and the animals are deprived of freedom and exercise. THAT is animal cruelty.

    Oh the joys of managing cattle in the winter. You are exactly right about animals preferring to be outside. We have a big lounging barn the cows go in and can feed round bales to them inside with a loader tractor but they would always go out to bed down for the night. I have seen them the next day with frost or snow on their fur and think, dang, we have a shelter for you to get under. And those stupid deer, what an aggravating animal. I think they try to destroy stuff on purpose. Thanks for the video.

    Dad would carry a jumper wire out to check electric fences and would connect the hot wire to either a ground rod or a steel fence post to make fence repairs! It was always funny when he would got upstream of his jumper or it would sometimes come loose then it would shock the hell out of him 😂😂, I know it sounds cruel but it was funny!

    I used to live on a farm in the 80s in southwest Iowa and we had an old hound dog named Fonzy and he was an outdoor dog unless it got really cold in the winter. During those times (mainly at night) he got let in to an enclosed back porch / laundry room that had heat and he was always a happy dog. We also had barn cats who always stayed in the barn which were too skiddish to pet, and they would burrow themselves into the hay in the barn when it got really cold in winter. I like the mention of coal in connection with Santa. When I was growing up in the 60s my dad used to threaten us with a lump of coal in our stockings at Christmas instead of oranges, gifts or candy if we didn't behave.

    We had outside dogs when we were kids. We brought one in one time when it was cold and he tore the house up trying to get out. Let him out and he went and stayed in the barn with the hogs. Wouldn’t come near the back door of house again.

    Yep, just got done doing the same thing. Just add in some snow like we are getting in New York, and you have it. My cows act the same as yours do. Typical. Agree on the 1 12 volts instead of the 2 6 volts. Did that to all of my red ones and never looked back. Much easier and cheaper as well, Glad to see my days are the same as others.

    Ross, Ever since the dry season here, the water wells has dried up! I had been just hauling water to add to the well and that would do for a week or so. But now it just disappears in about a few hours. So now we have a storage tank feeding the system, it was just fine till the weather got down to Zero. Now with all the tank heater and heat tapes, it's a full time job to keep the system from freezing up! Glad I don't have any livestock to worry about anymore! The only animals are the barn cats that have moved into the house for safety! They just sit here and keep me company during the rest of the day keeping warm! My late doggie was also a fan of being out side all the time. Except when I got into the pickup, She would cross the fields to meet me at the other farm just to get a ride back! Miss her. I've been looking for a source of lump coal for a while, all the mines close only load out pulvrized coal onto the rail cars for delivery to the power plants. What your supplier has is what I want for our old time cook stove and room stoves. I'm wanting to get back to using them incase of power outages and supply of LPG interruptions, also for my steam traction engines! It's a bit far to haul to here but at least it's a possibility. Wonder what their price per ton is?

  • @Ham68229
    @Ham68229 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    You're absolutely correct about beef cattle, they just have a mind of their own. If it's freezing cold, they don't care, just keep feed in front of their noses and their happy. I used to raise beef cattle, made sure mine calved in late spring, no chance of "winter freeze" getting to them. Yes, constantly had to repair or replace plenty of fencing. This is why I also hated to use electric fence, too easy to be tore down by "critters".
    Ross, you stay warm and safe during all this bad weather my friend. It's been below 0 here in KS the past week, love this time of year and weather but, my old body says "hell no". LOL You post when you're able. Cheers :)

    Ross, a tip that not a lot of people know about; O’Reilly, Auto Zone and I think NAPA give a $10 store credit for old batteries. My O’Reilly’s has no limit so if I bring back 10 batteries I get $100 in store credit. It’s well worth it to collect them from various sources and bring them in 2-3 at a time, next thing you know you’ve practically paid for a new battery.

    Electric fence stories around the farm are limitless. Especially when you have one of those fences that you put a penny under the light bulb that controls the power level and you have to patrol it every day to get the electrocuted snakes and raccoons off of it. One farmer had one of those and when I went out to spread liquid fertilizer I laid the fence down and drove over the barbed wire. It managed to stick in one of the rear floater tires. I thought I knew where it was in relation to the power unit. WRONG. I was still shaking a day later. A fly-back transformer in a TV is low voltage compared to that fence.
    Poor Buddy. Very few farm dogs do not get to ride in the truck. Put him in the truck, go to town, and the Babes will be flocking around wanting to pet that beautiful puppy. My dog goes into places like Rural King and she always gets gals to stop and talk. Roxie smells dog on gals walking by and immediately wants to further investigate. "You smell my dog don't you." My answer is always "She spots dog owners, especially good-looking young ladies." (I can get away with that as most are younger than my 80 years and if they are older they love the compliment)
    So let Buddy ride to town with you as he is a good-looking lady magnet. Your line should be "Come to my farm this evening and I will play my organ for you." Of course, you need to make sure they know it is the one with keys.
    Just everyday stuff you have to do around the farm is good video. Keep it up.

      You need to get a little house-type dog for fishing bait. Here is another true electric fence story. Mrs. S looked out at Johnny swinging on the electric fence. So she went out and shooed him away from the fence. She grabbed the fence to see where it was broken and got the shocking of her life. Johnny had on rubber boots so he was insulated from the ground.@@rosstheoliverman

    I being more concerned with my electric bill, bought timers for the block heaters. I set them to have the tractor of choice warm when I get home from work or go out in the morning on the weekends. Now if I expect an ice storm or a big snow storm then I just bite the bullet and plug them in. I also bought a 24 volt battery trickle charger for the 4020 for this cold weather. Heavy extension cords are important to prevent fires. The Super 77 diesel has to sit this cold weather out until I get new injectors for it. I'm hoping that will change having to use tractor crack on an 80 degree day.

I'm from north central Indiana and we had -8 with a wind chill of -35 combined with 50mph wind. I did very little outside. If it wasn't necessary, it didn't happen, lol. • @jimtrewartha2594
    @jimtrewartha2594 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Ross I agree with you about the beef cattle and cold. It has been extremely cold here in WI the last several days. -40° wind chill, and more than a foot of snow blowing around. And my cattle are out in the pasture. I don't even see them during the day, but they do come in at night for awhile to use the barn. Its open and they come and go as they please, but mostly go. I had a beautiful dog for a long time. When it got like this we would let her inside at night, but if she saw me putting fresh straw in her dog house, she was happy as could be! I think the livestock are more healthy in fresh air rather than breathing all of the used air in a building. My neighbors dairy barn has so much moisture coming out of it all the time it looks like its on fire many times, that can't be healthy at all! Maybe you can get back to the pedal tractor restoration, or other freezer top jobs until warmer times again. I look forward to your videos! Stay warm!

He has no ears and half a tail because it froze off back when it was like -60. He refused to come inside. He just would not come in. He went in the dog house were there is straw with the dog, also refuses to come in. But when it gets that cold it gets hard. But they, in my experiences, would rather have there ears frozen off then come inside

    I said before you need a front wheel assist loader tractor for feeding. Now I'm suggesting one with a cab and heater. No more misery. For a future video you can add air conditioning to the cab. Yes, harder to get in and out, but oh the comfort provided by climate control. Plus, with FWA no more getting stuck. You win and we win because you can make more videos and we can watch them.

      Thanks Greg! Days like this I’d love to have a cab with a heater, but I bet by the time the heater would get warm I’d be about finished with what I was doing 🤣

    Ross a video or so ago you showed an f 600. Mice moved into the cab. Yrs ago dad found and used a product called mouse out. It smelled like moth balls. Seems to run the rodents out!

      I’ll have to look into that. I certainly have enough stuff that sits. It might be worth it

      Why not just buy moth balls? That's what I do. But like everything, they've gotten more expensive also! 😳

    Ross, you should try Irn Bru Scotland's number one soft drink. It taste like cotton candy and bubble gum together.

    It's been down in the single digits in this area so I'm in the same boat of not doing anything outside that isn't necessarily.
