That's why the major Batman villain who actually became a successful mobster as well as an interesting character is the Penguin. And that's because, well, he's the Penguin. He's one of the few Batman Rogues that actually works better as a organized crime boss than a supervillain.

I'm generally fine with Black Mask. His kinda lameness is usually part of his schtick. He is way out of his league in Batmans rogue gallery and he keeps getting that proved to him. Whereas Penguin is often the focus in Penguins stories with Black Mask it is usually whoever he brings in that takes the spotlight. It's when they try and make his cool on his own that I think he sucks.

    • @GeneralKenobi75

@@Hornetog9vp Yes, but he was a minor villain overall. And still just a thug when you get down to it, you see mob bosses like him all the time. Penguin really puts the villain with class trope to a whole new level.

    • @GeneralKenobi75
      @GeneralKenobi75 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

@bigevilworldwide1 Sal Maroni was also just a thug with a lot of power. Two-face does have the mobster motif, but his origins and character make him much more interesting than a simple mob boss, like the Penguin does. Black Mask, despite all his accomplishments, still is just another thug who's only really thing going for him besides his mask is his penchent for torture. He doesn't have Two-faces tortured backstory and character or the Penguins sophistication and bird gimmick that makes him stand out. Out of all of them the Penguin is the most successful out of all of them. His operations survived No Man's Land, War Games, several power grabs by Black Mask and others, and he still always bounces back. Heck, he even still has a legitimate business with the Iceberg Lounge.

For as much as I love, "The Batman," I can't deny they did Freeze dirty. There was no Nora. He was a common thief who fled into a cryo lab and got himself warped when he was cracking canisters open to try freezing Batman. No explanation for how he's smart enough to build his suit, no noble motivations, just a cold, dead heart that longed for wealth and power.

to be fair he still had alot going for him conceptually, if he had been a second Mr. freeze who stole the originals tech it'd flesh out his character a lot, he'd be the freeze who used the fast track to super powers and always takes the easy way out of everything, its what made the story where he cryo freezes himself to try and outlive the batman work so well, he has NOTHING he cares about outside of getting away with crimes because of powers he didn't even earn.

Yeah, Shiva *was* a hero. In her earliest appearances, back in the Bronze Age, in Richard Dragon's series, she worked with Richard and Ben "Bronze Tiger" Turner. She was more violent and blood-knight-y than them, but she was still a force for GOOD.
I'm not even kidding, that was the acronym for the organization they worked for. G.O.O.D. Global Organization of Organized Defense, but as they always said, what the initials stand for isn't important.
I love the Bronze Age. They'd do more complex characterization and deeper storytelling, but still unabashedly use characters and plot elements from the Silver Age without batting an eye. It was great. We need more of that in comics.

I never liked what the did to Deathstroke around Infinite Crisis, even going back to Identity Crisis. He was a guy who had actively avoided getting involved with other villains. Even in his original Titans run, he only took the Hive contract to fulfill his son Grant's debt. He wasn't even all that interested in revenge for his death. He wasn't the type to drop a chemical bomb on a city just for petty revenge.
Even in his earlier mercenary days, he had a code of honor where he seemed to choose to work for the lesser of two evils. He also refused to reveal a client when his son was under threat because he believe he was good enough to save him. He did save his life, just not his voice.

In reference to what’s to come, it’s says something about how much people cared Cassandra that when those things.. happened, the backlash was so intense, that basically every story even into the new 52 has been essentially one continuous apology for it, even symbolically. Every time they try to have Cassandra do something intense or out of character, it’s almost immediately retconned. People forget just how quickly they retconned the reason for her actions during one year later. (In comparison to most retcons)

Just looked up New 52 Nora Fries. Yeah, not a fan. Takes away the tragedy of Victor and just turns him into another insane person. Also, while Lazara might not be the best way to go about it, I'm not opposed to the idea of Nora being cured but then twisted into a villain. To my knowledge, Nora's always been effectively just a prop to act as Victor's motivation, so this could be an interesting way to develop her as a character separate from him as well as develop Victor himself.

  • @Mikephisto

I actually like the concept of Lazara. Instead of a literally fridged woman to be man pain for Victor she would be her own character. The consequences of Victor’s actions here could have been used so he’d take responsibility for her new condition, maybe even realize his inability to move on caused only suffering to others all to save one person dying of a terminal illness that others don’t have the luxury of a cryonics expert spouse. Plus with Nora as a walking Lazarus pit, she’d be a walking target for those wanting to cheat death, all while the whispers of graveyards torment her, unable to get herself any rest while the dead plead her to give them life. And that sure as hell is better than the Nu52’s abysmal retcon.
That’s a scratched surface of Lazara’s potential and I find it a little sad to see writers and readers didn’t feel the same way.
That tangent aside this retrospective is frickin awesome, can’t wait for more.

    • @slifer875

"a literally fridged woman" i said before and i'll say it again, there is nothing wrong with death and tragedy regardless if it is a woman or a men being a victim, nora wasn't "man pain" for Victor, she was the representation of a couple that froze and shatter, only leaving MR frezze in this world, the tragedy of MR frezze is a couple (fuck you new 52) that suffer a tragedy and can't move on (grieving widow for example), a cheap bootleg dark phoenix doesn't elevate any of those themes, is just embarassing and im happy they never continue with this idea.

Arkham Knight has a DLC mission that's kinda a more depressing version of that, with Freeze sacrificing everything to save her while she, having been awake in the ice like a coma and suddenly being awake, keeps yelling at him to let her die. While I can see some things in here that could've led to Cassie's actions in One Year Later, the facts contradict that. She rejects all those things that could've led her on that path. She rejects all the terrible things that could've made her a villain in the end. She is loyal to the symbol above all else and what it stands for, not the Batman, but the Bat.
And they decided to forgo all that in favor of a stupid idea that does not then or now work, no matter how many people try to say otherwise. "Oh it gets fixed later, so it's okay now!" No, fuck you, a bad story does not become good because it gets fixed. Secret Empire and HydraCap still suck balls, they got fixed but they still suck.
I have tried to see defenses for what comes next, most of them from people who either didn't care about Cassie and only gave a shit about Tim Drake. All it is garbage and all of it sucks.
Here's to the next time when we finally lay to rest all the stupid BS that happened to Cass and how the fans stood by her all the same to get DC to fix what they broke. Linkara is right, sometimes complaining to management does work.

@@alexandredesbiens-brassard9109 I have read the story... it's shit. And to clarify your stated point, fascism kinda sorta already has come to America and not cloaked in patriotism at all. The conceit of HydraCap is that NO ONE suspects Cap because he is inherently trusted. Meanwhile, every asshole fascist currently in power proudly and flagrantly flaunted their horrible shitty beliefs to the public. Cap himself wasn't elected, he seized power. The problem with HydraCap coming at the time it did was stupid and how it presented Fascism taking over America was even dumber. Because guess what? Stevil lied about who he was, Trump was honest about how horrible a human being he was. Every step of the way he shared who he was, what he wanted and touted his racist, sexist shitty personality. He didn't trick anyone, he appealed to shitty, horrible people and got help from a foreign nation of like minded shitty horrible people. So the analogy falls completely flat.
That's not what they said, they kept repeating, over and over, that this Steve was Steve. He wasn't mind-controlled, he wasn't from an alternate reality, he wasn't brainwashed, he was Steve. This was who he was and they came up with disgustingly offensive backstory to justify why it existed. Including a horribly provblematic part concerning how the Allies cheated to win World War 2 but also either didn't erase or actually outright created the Holocaust when they did so. That is so fucked up and horrible that they could do nothing BUT retract their bullshit shockvalue nonsense. Secret Empire is shit itself, meandering in a cul de sac plot, not including important plot details within the main series and using every opportunity it took to bad mouth, berate and shit on Carol Danvers as a character. They didn't even give her a chance to sock the fucking Fascist Steve in the face once for all the shit he put her through. Secret Empire is shit, and trust me, Linkara feels the same.

Personally, I feel the Mafia villains are mostly interesting only really when it’s Batman’s early days or if you have a skilled writer, like what Christopher Nolan did making The Dark Knight more of a crime drama than a superhero story. I like to see the development of Gotham, from the Crime families to the Supervillains, but I do actually find a few quite interesting, though this might be due to my love of movies like the aforementioned Dark Knight, The Godfather, The Irishman or The Untouchables. This is one thing that I thought actually worked about the first season of Gotham and how the rest of that show developed. (I also don’t really read the comics, so take this with a grain of salt). Not to mention, villains like Black Mask, The Penguin, and Two-Face are often mobsters.
Here’s who I can name off my head:
    Oswald Cobblepot
    Salvatore Maroni

I would like to see a Batman story where the mob is a serious threat and major player, like, something that brings batman back down to street level, fighting regular criminals rather than supervillains or the likes. It's just that most supervillains (aside from Lex Luther) just seem so boring when compared to the villains we have in real life. Hech, nowadays half of Batman's rogues gallery hardly seem to qualify as full time villains anymore. A story where Poison Ivy conquers the world could easily have her as the protagonist trying to reverse the damage people have done to the environment, I mean sure the morality would be pretty grey, but I can see a lot of readers rooting for her.

Mr. Freeze is one of my favorite Batman villains thanks to the Animated series but there's an issue with the whole "wanting to save his wife", if she is saved Freeze can retire and stop being a villain, which is great, but if she dies or turns into a villain and is killed for it that means Freeze would just snap and become an even more vengeful and spiteful villain which is just putting the character in limbo, never being able to be in peace. Everyone is free to decide which they prefer but I always hated how in the latter seasons of Batman TAS he becomes a nihilistic ice cyborg, despite the fact that in "Batman: Sub-Zero" Nora Friess is saved and to this day I get choked up seeing that final scene of Victor Friess crying of joy knowing his wife was saved.

Man pre-War Games Gotham had so many organized crime groups that each gangs' territory must have amounted to about two city blocks at most lol. There were 3 different "5 mafia families of Gotham" back then on top of all the other Cartels, Mobs and Triads (not to mention the Super Villains who ran Mobs like Penguin and Scarface). I hate the war games storyline but it did make the Gotham underworld less bloated at least for a few years.

It doesn't have to be a end of the year list, and it doesn't have to have a set date even. It might be a good comic-quickies-esque thing, that you might be able to do a bit at a time and just give a slot to whenever the script is eventually ready, or when there's a delay and you need more time to finish the next one...

Is it weird that, upon seeing your new glasses, my first thought was "Clark Kent?" They look good, though -- I'm glad losing your old pair down the pit of eternal doom got you to finally update your prescription. XD As for the comics -- well, those are some pretty wild ups and downs, huh? You've got horrible and boring storylines, amazing and thoughtful storylines, truly awful artwork, very solid artwork -- Cass ran the gamut in her solo series. I like how everything was developed -- how nasty comments like Barbara's had real consequences, how relationships changed, grew, and faltered as Cass learned more about herself and the people around her (particularly with Batman and his forays into BatDadDickery -- very satisfying to see him called out on these tendencies every so often), and how the Shiva thing more or less came full-circle. I'm sorry to hear that the next episode features poor Cassandra at her worst thanks to editorial mandate, but I'm glad there's a redemption in there too. And I look forward to the eventual talk on Stephanie Brown -- she seems like a pretty compelling character who got dicked around a lot too.

And then...War Games. Grrrrrrr! Over a decade later and I'm STILL pissed off about what they did to Stephanie. And then what they've done with Cassandra... She can't even catch a break in movie form either! In the Birds of Prey movie they made her character into a pickpocket that swallows a diamond and has to shit it out or a bunch of Gotham City mobsters will kill her. Sigh. • @jonathancampbell5231
      @jonathancampbell5231 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Bruce wasn't pretending to be the head mob guy. Stephanie stole his plan and arranged a meeting of mob bosses under the mistaken belief that Matches Malone would show up, and the mobsters got nervous and started shooting each other when nobody knew who called the meeting.
Stephanie didn't know that Matches Malone was Bruce, and obviously Bruce didn't know about the meeting because Stephanie was trying to do this behind his back.
So Cassandra couldn't read the body language of Matches Malone because Bruce didn't use the alias of Malone in this story in the first place.

Honestly at this point why hasn’t anyone Patreon sponsored a review for Batman Annual (volume 2/The New 52 run) #1? Especially because people overlook the fact that it’s written by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV. It would also raise some interesting debates here, on the other hand two otherwise VERY talented writers tried to fix something that wasn’t broken (seriously this and Cycle of Violence (Scarecrow’s retconned origin) is giving me Rob Zombie Halloween flashbacks) ,but on the other hand at least DC is actually COMMITTING to the reboot so this leads to a lot of confused, frustrating emotions
